Firmwares. How does Kies know whicjh?

I was under the impression that Kies looked for branding on the phones present firmware and then retrieved/installed the matching one from the Samsung server. However. At least one person has stated that though their phone was unbranded/sim free that they have had a Vodafone 2.1 update (they were using the VF network at the time) that has effectively branded their phone and placed all the bloatware that comes with VF as well. How can this happen? Does it read the sim for network operator and do it from there?
here's a clue

Read more into the registry keys info.
Sent from my SHW-M110S using XDA App
in one of the replies on that topic it was mentioned what Kies looks for to find the firmware you should upgrade to
Ahh I see. But that is the question. This was an unbranded phone so it would not have had any network marker in the registry but did have a VF sim in the slot. It still installed the VF doctored update instead of a generic one. (this is the info I have been given)
it has nothing to do wth the branding
it's the model ID that it looks for and the previous ROM
each model has its own ID if you read the registry you'll find it

Yes I understand that but it is through the model ID in the registry that it knows which branding the phone has. Mine for example is GT-I9000HKDXEU which is generic UK and is not T-Mobile.

Upgrade GTS5570 to Gingerbread on carrier based phone

Hello!! I am just trying to find out how we can unlock the phones that we bought from different carrier providers and how to upgrade them manually...
Since, I don't have a carrier based phone, I'm short of ideas on this topic. So, is there anyone who has upgraded to gingerbread in a carrier based rom, please make sure you reply with all the details.
Also, I especially want to know about upgrading in a Vodafone - Italy galaxy mini phone. If anyone had tried it please share it here.
Thanks!!!
Hey
I have a carrier based phone (Comcel in Colombia) and I upgraded to GB without any problems (I used ODIN to flash GB).
SIM gets unlocked due to the fact that the whole filesystem gets rewritten, so I'd say that there's no problem in flashing different version of the OS on carrier based devices.
The only way that would be a problem is if the carrier has custom apps that report back (kinda like Verizon does in the US with some HTC devices).
For the Italian Vodafone, sorry I can't help you with that

Okk so you mean you can now use sim card from any provider after you flashed gb.... Also, will it have any effects on the performance of phone and what will happen if teh carrier gets to know about it???

Yeah, phone's now SIM unlocked, regarding perfomance (besides the obvious Froyo to GB performanc boost) there's no discernable change, there shouldn't be any change unless you're flashing a non-compatible ROM (EU rom on a 5570L or viceversa).
I'm not a lawyer but from what I've heard the only way a carrier can find out that you have a custom ROM is if you take your phone for repairs and all they can do is void your warranty, nothing more, althought I'd check the service contract in case there's something hidden in there.

Unfortunately, any discussion on modification of IMEI numbers is not allowed on XDA as it is illegal in most countries and XDA is based in the USA and would, potentially, be held liable for such activity.
Google would be your best friend.

Probably killed my modem

Hello,
my moto voice stopped working and even a factory reset didnt help. So I unlocked my bootloader and everything from the Rom I downloaded. I got an error upon flashing the modem, but the script sadly still deleted modemst1 and 2. Everythng works now, except the phone is now Brasilian and I have no signal whatsoever. My Moto is a XT1092 if it helps. Help would be much appreciated
Indeed yo may killed to modem/radio, probably your carrie does not support the same bands as the retail brazil carrier. Which carrier are you?, all gsm bands still may work unless you have CDMA.
Regards

Im currently using o2 germany. Just got off the phone with the Repair company and they said if i have root or unlocked bootloader its fubar and they wont repair it. WTF....i found brazil or us stock firmwares, but no german one...
I doubt it is broken. But it may not work until you find a stock original ROM to flash. Maybe you should look for a UK or FR ROM , I believe there is only one ROM for xt1092, not a specific German one. It might be called EU ROM, but I haven't searched for it.

The Build that was running on it before definitely ended in DE. But I will keep searching for it. Do you think I should send it to a repari center and risk paying a lot of money, or should I just wait until a German Rom is released somewhere? I mean, Android L at least should fix it right up again.
Because you are not stock you won't be able to update it to lollipop... For the repair center you are the only one to be able to answer that question

I am stock, I actually managed to get my TWRP Backup back on the phone, so im on a German Rom again. Still, the modem doesnt work, as TWRP doest back that up.
I see... You have to find a stock radio and to flash it again.
I think someone with unlocked bootloader can probably extract it for you?

Yes exactly. I do not know how someone can extract the radio though...
I hope, Android L will flash a new modem. If that would be the case, my problem would be solved
Yes but again: if your modem not stock then no android L for you.

I know that, but I guess there will be someone who can grab the OTA and i can flash it manually
Good guess you're right. But I suggest you to ask someone with a xt1092 and an unlocked bootloader to extract radio for you, ask it in the dev section.

Changing the IMEI of your device is illegal in most countries.
And no, you can't just change the model number, the hardware is different in these devices, and you can't just flip a switch to have an Exynos SoC instead of a Snapdragon, etc.
But I must be change my IMEI
