'H' being displayed instead of '3G' - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've upgraded to windows mobile 6.5 and have noticed that my phone now just displays an H on the top instead of the usual 3G, anyone know why this happened? And if I should get it fixed or just leave it as is.

The reason that happened is because the icons used in that ROM for 3G are the default HTC ones that say H (stands for HSPA, the network protocol known as 3G). Unless it REALLY bothers you, there's no reason to change it, since it still means you're getting a 3G connection.

H stands for HSDPA to which is a faster data connection protocol than 3G so i'd leave as is

Connecting to UMTS/HSDPA using AT&T

I have noticed that when I am connected to the fast cellular internet the sign constantly switches between 3G to H. Like every 15 secondes.
It's not that the connection is dropping it's just it is always changes from 3G to H. I am on At&T and would like to know if it happenes to someone else.
As I read, At&T suppose to have an HSDPA and since I am in big cities like Chicago and Washington DC, if there is HSDPA it should exists in these cities.
So?? anyone using AT&T + KAISER knows what I am talking about?
should be worried?
i see this behavior all the time with my Kaiser, Trinity and Treo and never worry about it... most often the i'll see the "H" symbol when i'm tethering or downloading a file from a website or i'll see the "3G" or "E" if i'm in an area of town that doesn't have a strong signal... i don't worry about this behavior unless it affects what i'm doing, e.g., lose my internet sharing connection. just my 2 cents...

Thank u for your fast reply. I know sometimes the signal changes to E or even G if there is no high speed connection around but it seems that the H and 3G just changes every 15-20 seconds in areas with high speed connection. does it also happen to you? or anybody else?

I actually consider you lucky. At work in Menlo Park, Ca. I rarely get a 3G or an H... But I spent a couple of weeks going to SF every day and there I saw behavior very much like you describe. For me it seemed to want to switch from 3G to H as I was doing some sort of access like e-mail read or a download. Though that is probably just anecdotal as I didn't really make a study of it; just something I noted.
Cheers.
i have the 3g/H switch happening constantly as well. could this connection issue have anything to do with the sms issues (issue being sms works randomly), or totally unrelated?
Yep...this happens to me too.

I'm in the Chicago-North Suburb area and I see it change all the time too. I get a lot of HSDPA connections. From my understanding, this is a good thing!
Though I'm by no means an expert on HSDPA, 3G, UMTS or any of these, it's my understanding that HSDPA will give you data bursts of up to 5 times the connection speed of 3G/UMTS.

What it means on my 8525
Hi Guys,
Don't worry, you are not having signal quality or connection issues. On my 8525 (Hermes) the switch to H from 3G simply means the phone is using the data connection at the H (HSDPA) speeds. It shows 3G when data is not being transferred.
Yup. It's sort of like a combination power/hard drive light on a computer. When the "H" lights up, data is being read and written over the high speed network. The "3G" means the high speed network is available, your just not sending or recieving at the moment. At the slower EDGE speeds, the "E" is just a power light, showing the network is available, but no indication when you are sending a receiving data over it.
Someone correct me if I'm totally wrong, but here are my thoughts:
The H would be displayed when the device is accessing HSDPA or HSUPA. The D stands for download and the U stands for upload, right? But AT&T only has HSDPA right now, and not HSUPA. So when you're in an HSDPA area and browsing the web or sending and receiving emails, when the device is receiving information (downloading), it's on HSDPA and the "H" is displayed. But then when it needs to send information (uploading), since there is no HSUPA signal it switches to 3G and the "3G" is displayed. Hence the constant switching on the display as the device sends and receives data.
Someone please give me a gold star, or tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about!

If you see the H then you are using HSDPA, if you see the 3G icon then you are using UMTS. The difference is speed and the fact that if you see the H icon it means you can use voice and data at the same time.
I can stream live TV from my Media Center using WebGuide (free) and as long as I have the H icon I can talk on the phone at the same time I'm watching TV but if it switches to 3G I loose my data connection until I hang up the phone.
Mine mostly stays on H but swithces to 3G when the HSDPA signal is lost. HSDPA isn't avalible every where that 3G UTMS is.
Also HSDPA is 3.5G and UMTS is 3G. Meaning with UMTS you can get downloads of 384 kbps to 768 kbps and with HSDPA you can get from 768 kbps to 1mbps.
This is how it is supposed to work kids...
The H only shows up when you are using HSDPA. HSDPA would kill your battery in no time if it stayed connected all the time. your phone is smart enough to only use HSDPA when it is actually sending/receiving data. Think of it as a power saving feature.
I'm in cleveland and i just see an "H" all the time... FWIW...

But it only uses HSDPA when it's RECEIVING data, not SENDING. That's what HSUPA would be for (if AT&T had it yet). Right?

Perfect.!! Downlink = Downloading (HSDPA).. Upload data by 3G as AT&T is not supporting Uplink = Uploading (HSUPA)... smart one..
I'm not sure it is that simple...
I live in Jacksonville an i neverget an "H" except when i used shap's rom on my 8525; however, i get speeds from 600 to 980, so is this extremely fast UMTS, or is Cingular just inconsistant with their labels?

I also live in Jacksonville and found with the Tilt that I was only seeing the
3G icon and never the H icon until I installed KaiserTweak and set the HSPA option to enabled. Now I get the H icon but only during the data connection being active (e.g., sending a URL request and receiving the page load). The icon then turns to 3G when the Tilt sits "inactive."
Also just because you don't see the H for HSDPA doesn't mean its not working unless the REGISTY has the correct setting you will not get the H icon. the place is HKLM>Drivers>RIL>EnableHSDPAIcon = 1 (sometimes default is 0 which means you won't see the H icon)
Since my last posts on this topic, I now have my Tilt!
I am confused- why would AT&T not enable the "H" icon? If you are using HSDPA (and soon HSUPA), wouldn't they want you to know it?
Maybe they are afraid it will confuse people. They just want to market "3G" and people to understand it and see that icon, whether they are on UMTS or HSDPA/HSUPA?

HSDPA enabled

The first day i got my tilt I enabled the HSDPA connection. I connected to the internet and my 3G icon changed from a 3G to a H, then the internet was blazing, faster than my DSL i use at work.
Well in the last few days I noticed it doesn't go to H anymore, it just stays at 3G. I checked the registry and HSDPA is still enabled. I have add a lot of cabs since it was working. Does anyone know anything that controls the HSDPA besides the registry entry. any ideas on how to get it back?
For me, it only changes to an H when actually transferring data. It stays at 3G most of the time.
yes, thats what I was getting as well. But even when I am transferring data it still remains at 3G. I have yet to see it go to H in the last few days. Maybe the network is getting work, anyone in the Chicago area getting H?

The magic H

Despite I`m in an area where HSDPA is provided my Kaiser shows only a 3g not a H - but when I go under data connection the H is shown !
On my Tytn I had a ROM where the H was shwon without a data connection !
Does anyone know how to solve this ???
Thanks
myrin
You dont want it to be fixed. The H should only show when there is data transferring and the cell you are in is using HSDPA to send packets to your device.
Yes but at some german Kaisers you can see the H but mine doesn`t show it ???
need to enable it
i used kaiser tweak...see the stickies in this forum.

You said it shows it when there is data flow. That is the correct behaviour.
no, because others do have the H before connecting to the data connection - I assume it is a matter of ROM
There are reg tweaks where you can change the icon for "3g" to "h" but that doesn't mean that you are actually in a HSDPA enabled cell - it just means that you are in a 3g service area.
Personally I prefer having 3g, and it changing when I am getting H throughput.
Yes I know and I`m in a HSDPA cell but it is only shown when I`m connected ....not before - before there is just the 3G

"3G" Icon on AT&T Tilt

The 3G Icon has never displayed on my tilt. I live an area that supposedly has great 3G coverage.
It's quite annoying since all the screenshots I've seen of the Tilt are always displaying the icon.
I get the E, H, and very rarely the G icons but I've never seen the 3G icon.
Any ideas?
Well,
The H is for HSDPA, which is higher speed than what the 3G denotes....so I'd say that you are doing just fine.
Yeah, I do get he H quite a bit.
But I just find it strange that I've never seen the 3G Icon.
Maybe because I am not using the stock AT&T ROM. I'm using Q-Mobile 1.2
Is the 3G icon specific to the Stock AT&T Rom?
Yea, is there a cab that changes the icon to 3G?
I have the stock AT&T ROM in my Tilt. When it goes online, the 3G lights up first, then, when I am lucky, an H replaces it. The difference in speed is noticable when the H is on. You can use Kaiser Tweaks to enable HSDPA on the Tilt - stock, it only allows access to the slower 3G speeds.
Why would you want to disable the higher speed transfer?
The H icon you are seeing is actually a good thing as it means that AT&T now has full HSDPA coverage in your area. In my case, the first three months that I had my Tilt, the 3G icon showed when idle and the H icon showed when I was downloading data. One day, out of nowhere, the 3G icon disappeared and has been replaced by the H icon for good. I have now noticed two things that are different now that the H shows all the time.
1. I can now make a call without the data connection being disconnected.
2. My download speeds shot through the roof! When the 3G icon was there, I had speeds of about 550kbps. Now I get speeds of 1000kbps!
Dont worry, I too panicked and tried to fix the missing icon, but even after a hard reset didn't remedy the situation, then I knew it was something tower-based.
H is good. It's amazing. It's like cable internet in your pocket. (OK...but close...)

On a Tilt you can also go to Start / Programs / File Explorer / My Device / Windows / HSDPASwitch to enable and disable HSDPA. You can even create a shortcut to it and put it in your programs folder or start menu.
There's a lot of hidden goodies in the windows folder. Everyone should just browse through there and see if they find anything interesting. (Field Test is there too!)

HSDPA is the fastest type of 3G available. Think of the H as the strongest possible connection.
In my city, I get 3G icon in the phone mode while not connected to the internet. While I was in Las Vegas, I get the H icon in the phone mode while not connected to the internet. It's strange but it's true. I've always thought the H icon is for data only but apparently H is also in phone mode too. I get the H icon in my city only when I'm usnig the AT&T's data and only while there's data session. When data is idle, it change back to 3G. But when I was in vegas, it never changed to 3G. It always displays H.

Where's the 3G!!

A week ago I got a second hand Tilt. It AT&T branded but a HTC rom was flashed to it, ROM version 3.28.405.0 WWE, Radio 1.65.17.56, Pototcol 25.83.40.02H.
My issue is I see not "3G" indicator on the screen in areas where I know there's coverage (my other phone does indicate 3G coverage). So what could this mean? Is something missing??
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks!

Having already read the HTC User Manual for the TyTN II perhaps? If you get the pdf from HTCs website (or even search for it) and have a read, you'll see that in areas of 3G coverage, sometimes the device will display a 'H' which is superior to ordinary old 3G.
My issue is that I'm in an area with 3G coverage, my other cell indicates this with a "3G" icon on it's screen, but my tilt does not indicate or detects 3G coverage. There's no "3G" or "H" on my display.

You may want to look for something like Kaiser Tweak or something else that disables 3g.. Also you can try tapping on the signal icon at the top and make sure that all the data/3g stuff is turned on at the bottom.
Don't know how to get screenshoot. On the top of the Today screen there's, from right to left, the task manager, the battery, the signal strength (just the little antenna and the bars) and the WiFi icon.

Kaiser Tweak = under Data
Advanced config = again, under Data.

Did you check in Advance config to see if just the icons are turned of ? I believe you can just turn the icons off ( because some people find them annoying ) but still call and connect at 3G speed. Are you lacking speed or just the icons. ?
Let me re-state
I've had this Tilt for about a week, my other cell (Samsung A737) indicates "3G" all the time while I'm at work so yes my sim is 3G. This Tilt has never indicated "3G".
I went to Adv. Config under data connections and enabled everything.
What I'm trying to figure out, is this Tilt unable to detect "3G" or is it a missing icon thing.
IF
1. you have a 3g sim
2. Kaiser Tweak and Advanced config don't have 3g disabled
3. you don't have the "nodata.cab" installed
4. 3G data is turned on in the comm manager
5. HSDPA is turned on in /settings/connections/advanced network
6. All the proper info is set for your connection "media net"
and you still don't have 3g.
I would say at the very least do a hard reset or update your ROM.
Anything I'm missing?

Say what?
I'm sorry ChumleyEX but that's not an answer...I dont have a data plan so MediaNet is, in my opinion, not an issue. Like I said before, that didn't keep my other (and less sophisticated cell) from detecting 3G coverage... anyway more data!!
I tried turnning off wifi to see if wifi icon becomes "3G", that doesn't work, the wifi icon gets an "X" over it & does not become "3G".
Yesterday I found out that if you try to make a video call the cell tells you if there's a 3G network available, so I tried this in my office & it answers no 3G network available.
Last night I started experimenting with flashing, I knew this cell had been flashed before by someone else, for one this is an AT&T branded Tilt but the previous owner has using it on another carrier and when I access the bootloader among the information there was "Spl 1.0 Olipro".
I flashed a couple of Hard SPLs & a couple of radios to try and it got me thinking, could the lack of "3G" be a radio or ROM issue??

It definitely could be radio rom issue, but ... I am flashoholic, that means I flash almost every rom that comes out. And on most roms that I flashed the 3G icon changes after some time to the X, but after going to the internet via gprs the 3G appears once again. I dont know why is this happining, there was a disscusion about this, but I dont know in which thread.
The funny thing is although I have the X icon, I am in 3G area and I can make video calls and use the 3G cappabilities. So I dontknow why u can not.
" I knew this cell had been flashed before by someone else, for one this is an AT&T branded Tilt but the previous owner has using it on another carrier and when I access the bootloader among the information there was "Spl 1.0 Olipro"
So it's possible that the media net info is incorrect. Also, your simple phone that has the 3G show up is just that, a simple phone. This tilt isn't so simple.
if this link works, download the file and run it.
