Droid GPS - myTouch 3G, Magic Apps and Games

I'm new to these forums so I hope I am posting this in the correct area. I managed to root my phone on my own with a little googling!! I have a US MT3G running CM 4.2.5 with firnware 1.6. I have an 8G C6 SD card and have it partitioned. I have overclocked the processor and it really moves faster than anything I have ever had! I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I really would like to use the new Google maps running on the US Verizon Droid but I understand it is only for 2.0. I 'm figuring someone has or is working on either getting 2.0 for ROOTED phones or some sort of patch so at least the new Gmaps can function in 1.6. Any help or direction out there?

Google just released Navigation for 1.6 as well. It is located in the market. Just download and upgrade to the most current Google Maps version. NO hacking involved. It works for non rooted phones + rooted phones
Side question, when you say "overclocking" what did you use? Are you set to a MAX CPU speed of 528?, cause thats stock, unless its over 528, its not really over clocking. Im asking cause i want to overclock as well

Noob ?'s about root.

I'm sure the answers are posted here someplace but my search skills suck. And I can't find the info. So here are my questions.
Trying to deside whether or not to root. And was wondering if anyone has benchmarks for a stock Droid compared to the diferant levels of overclocking?
Also wondering if I would be able to get the payed apps I have now on my phone back loaded considering alot of them are listed as privet and they will not let me back them up.?.

Not sure about the benchmarks but I also have paid apps. The market saves your information andcafter rooting you can go back to download section of market and should say purchased next to apps you've bought and allow you to install them again. I've switch phones, roms and etc many times but they're always available again in download section. Also if you root and install froyo, it backs them up to your account and re-installs them automatically every time you flash a new rom. Just make sure you use the same info when setting up the phone.

I wanted to comment on your benchmark question...
This alone should influence you to root your Droid. I am running CyanogenMod 6.0 Froyo with ChevyNo1 1200mhz ULTRA low voltage kernel. My battery life is fantastic given the CPU frequency and my phone linpacks at 18-20mflops. I know this is not a very realistic benchmark test but in comparison, a stock Droid will throw out about 6-8mflops.
What I really want to show you, however, is the result from Quadrant, which runs a CPU and graphics benchmark test and shows you a graph comparing your phone to other phones like the Droid (stock) and Nexus One and other popular Android phones.
Give me 5 minutes and I'll have a screenshot up (just transfering some pics)
Okay, look at the screenshot below... my Droid is the yellow bar at the top, and the stock Droid is the second one from the bottom. BIGGGG difference in performance!
Also, aerdely is right about the paid apps... they'll show up in your market so you can re-download them.
I know there's lots of options but I have to ask. What's the most stable 2.2 out there? One with everything working (wifi Bluetooth and all) .
I'm not into the whole changing roms ten times a week thing. Mostly because after setting up apps and preferances on 4 replacement phones over the past 6 months .
I hear 2.2 backs up and redownloads apps, but does it also remember icon setup and app preferences?

The Droid is the fastest phone, save for that Samsung at number 2 overall. The Droids seem to be analogous to "dynoqueens" in the car world because I doubt those 54 MFLOPS devices are running at a stable temperature. So they're just overclocked and maxed out, though for only a few seconds just to get that number.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The Droid is a very capable device, though. 30 MFLOPS seems to be consistent and is a very good benchmark number for a phone that is about nine months old.
those are fake numbers... guaranteed
With 2.2 and a 1.3ghz kernel you might see 20 mflops

I pull a 19.3 on my 1.25 kernel on froyo

OK my stats are as follows
Quadrant 375
LinPack 4.5 mflops
Neocore 24.5 fps
So after looking around at everyone's stats I have made up my mind to take the leep and root !
I have been doing alot of reading and have a few idea's of what I should load up but would like to ask for opinions.
I'm looking for a 2.2 it does not have to be anything funky or over the top just has to work properly with wifi and everything, with a ULV or LV 1.0ghz to 1.25ghz.
My work is a very hot place all year around and I live on my phone on my many many breaks at work so I would really like a kernel that run's cool but pumps the speed..
Opinions, suggestions, recommendations and LINKS to downloads please.
Also please feel free to PM me if you have the time to help a Noob like me with a few dozen ?'s
Thanx all for the input so far and I want to get everything downloaded and get my phone pimped out ASAP so let's get the suggestions rolling
Thanx again

...so go stock.
So use the FRG01B leak that's supposed to be "stock" from Verizon. Without any further modification, it'll bump your top speed to 800 Mhz, but would allow you to see what's going on without really endangering anything.
It'll also give you a fair benchmark (personally) as to the speed of Froyo before you decide to bump things further.
is there anyway i can root without wiping the phone? im on 2.1 right now. i would just use titanium but you need root to even do that.
THeres ana app called easy root, for a buck...... gives u ROOT access, to say, install rom manager, flash the clockwork recovery and from there, install any zip.
for a buck, seems pretty nice vs. figuring out how to root the damn droid.
Rooted via easy root. and now playing with sapphire 1.0

They suspended easy root from the market. ? .
It was there this morning and I was going to grab it then but my credit card was a used up prepayed card so had to wait till now to get off work and get a new card for my account. I did that only to find out the app has been removed from the market.. Come on goggle give it back ! I love goggle but this is FAIL . There are many people that have payed for the app and now can't redownload it thats even more crappy then the fact that I can't buy it...

Did you do online watch, I did quick one and its available on mediafire so far from what I can see. I just typed easy root apk in search bar.

Hows that for a benchmark? Root it, and you too can enjoy screen capture, over/under clocking, Flash, Bluetooth voicedialing...it's a no-brainer.
Ok I guess I'm done looking for the easy way out.
Please advise if I got all this right before I screw something up..
1. Download RSD Lite, the 2.0.1 .sbf file

Stock ROM - 1.5 vs 2.1 ??

I bought my gf a Sprint Hero to see if she likes using Android. Might buy an Evo or whatever comes next if she likes the platform (this is her first smartphone, I've been using them for a loooong time - since the iPaq days!)
Anyway, the used one I bought her has stock 1.5 ROM on it, and I know that the Sprint 2.1 ROM is also available. I've searched all over and see mixed opinions on if its worth upgrading or not. A lot of bugs seem to crop up in the 2.1 version, but also some new features and better app compatibility in the market.
I'm a long-time HTC device user, but always WinMo, so I'm no stranger to flashing/modding etc. But I don't want to get into that at all with her phone, she'll get angry if I try to do something and then something else breaks, so I just want whatever stock ROM "just works" best. I don't want to have to "maintain" this device.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.
Hi there. As far as what "just works"...I have used both 1.5 and 2.1 stock...some people have experienced multiple problems. I used 2.1 stock for awhile before rooting...and quite honestly, the only problems I had was occasional lag...not drastic like some have reported....and rapid battery drain. I've since rooted 2.1 and use an overclocked kernel. Now, with GPS location off (still use cell service loc.), and no task killer whatsoever...i get almost 24 hours of battery with moderate to high usage. I experience no lag whatsoever. And, quite honestly, the rooting process and installing the OC'd kernel are VERY easy. I don't know about your girlfriend, but the skeptics I know...given a few days running straight stock unrooted...came back in a couple days begging me to root and make their Hero "run like mine".
Thanks for the info. I might go that route. Are you running a ROM with Sense? Did you just root the stock Sprint Sense ROM and OC it?
Any more help would be appreciated, like I said I've done a lot of ROM flashing and modding in the past but always on WinMo, I'm new to Android but have been reading up on these forums so I think I have a good sense of what needs to be done now. I'm not afraid of rooting / flashing processes, but I really don't want to put on ROMs where little weird glitches are going to piss her off. I don't mind dealing with that on my own phone, but this really does need to be a one-time job where I can just had it off to her and never have to deal with it again
I am running a ROM with Sense. It's the actually the HTC ROM that has been rooted. Here is a link to the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267 It runs sweet. I also formatted the stock 2gb SD card to ext for use with Apps2SD and it worked flawlessly after flashing the ROM. There are plenty of straightforward instructions here in this forum. Like I said, I think your g/f will be very pleased with the speed and battery life using this message. I flash a couple roms now and then to try something new, but always come back to this 'cuz it "just works".
1.5 is faster & more stable imo...but outdated. 2.1 provides a few new features but it's really up to her which one she wants to use. try them both out.
for 2.1 id use the stock rooted sprint rom
for 1.5 id suggest the pancake rom.
If you flash one of the OC kernels, just know that not all phones can handle the OC speeds, especially on bootup. If you decide to flash an OC kernel, MAKE SURE you nandroid backup first in case that phone goes into bootloops or freezes after the new kernel. Start with the 691mhz one just to test, then if all is good you can move up to 710mhz or 768mhz if you want more.
Also, to answer your initial question, I personally think stock 2.1 is much better overall than 1.5. Without even considering OC kernels, extra apps, widgets, etc....Android 1.5 didn't even have native CDMA support, so it had to contain a lot more code/tweaking for our Sprint build, which is why it runs so slowly and laggy. 2.1 includes CDMA support which automatically makes the code smaller and it means the OS automatically runs more quickly and smoothly on almost all HTC Heroes.
The only big consistent issue I've heard of on stock 2.1 is terrible Bluetooth functionality. Most other issues are hit or miss cases that aren't very common.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info, this has all been helpful.
To update, I dove in and just updated to the latest 2.1 Sprint official ROM (.6). I don't really think she has a current need to be rooted, as she doesn't use many apps, and doesn't need tethering.
If the need arises in the future for these things, I'll just flash the ROM linked above, or flash back to .5, root, and re-flash. Maybe by then there will be a root for .6 anyway and it will be even easier yet.
I'd also like to post my experience with 1.5 vs 2.1 I am not sure why everyone feels 2.1 is so much slower. I'm guessing it's because they haven't applied the .6 patch, which in addition to fixing the root exploit, also adds a bunch of speed enhancements in the UI.
2.1 is much faster on her phone than 1.5, especially scrolling in long lists, using the dialer, and even swiping between homescreens. She's quite happy with it, and I don't have to hack any fixes due to broken stuff in ROMs, so I'm happy too
I'm liking Android enough that I think I'm willing to buy another phone to play with, I got sick of dealing with flashing and hacking on my WinMo devices, so I went to iPhone. But I want a new Android HTC phone to play with, I think I'll buy a Nexus One or something.

[Q] Downgrade from Froyo to Eclair

Guys,
I'm using Froyo 2.2 on my G1 for 2 days, but seems a little problem there. Responses are a little bit slower than before (when used 1.6). The rotating home screen is a little bit slower to response.
1. What should I do except downgrade it to Eclair 2.1?
2. Is there any complete guide to do it?
Thank you very much for any suggestions
Try Sparksco's v1.5 Froyo Rom. Its extremely fast! Works great for me.
I'm curious too as i'm not too fond of the battery usage i'm getting from froyo at the moment.

What Froyo rom did you try? Some are faster than others. 1.6 was specifically designed for the G1, it's unreasonable to expect any rom to run as fast as that. 2.2.1 is a Froyo update designed for the MyTouch, it's still a little slower than 1.6, but it's faster than the other Froyo's.

Yeah, you can't expect newer versions of android to run as well on old hardware. The g1 wasn't designed for anything above donut. It can barely handle froyo, its almost too big for the g1. 1.6 is going to be way more responsive, but the issue there is that you are running old software, and in turn some apps won't work, among other downsides, such as not as much support. So its a choice, slightly less responsive but more features and more up to date software that all apps work on and is supported and such, or an out of date rom, not as supported, with less newer apps, but way more responsive and smooth.
Personally I got used to the less response in favor of auto updated market apps and newer gapps, etc.

Are you running a cyanogenmod-6 based ROM? Something probably just got corrupted. I would back up your apps, do a nandroid backup, and reflash the ROM you're using. Titanium is an amazing tool for seamless backing up and restoring of user apps with their data and market links. If that doesn't work, post back, but I doubt that it won't work.

You ARE on a release candidate, there's been two stable roms since, a stable ROM will probably fix it.

32B Magic and Dream use identical RAM and I believe the same CPU (slightly different variant AFAIK, but same ARM version and clock speed). Either way it makes no difference.
Also I accidentally gave you thanks because I'm used to having 'Quote' on the far left :-S

[Q] What does the latest CM build (6.1.0) offer

Hi everyone,
I've never used an HTC Android before, although I've had a Galaxy S for a while now. Looking to get a Dream for my fiancee who's a total newbie to Android, and despite looking for answers a lot, I couldn't find what the latest CM build for G1 offers (or any other custom ROM). From what I've gathered, the G1 is severely constricted in its default form, and while it's evident that CyanogenMod is going to improve things a lot, what specifically is going to change.
My main questions:
The Android version?
Apps2SD?
Impact on camera?
Speed?
Battery life?
Touchscreen responsiveness?
Any other info that someone can highlight, regarding whether this decision is wise or not (considering that G1 is the only cellphone falling in my budget atm)?.
I found this link on CM forums, but didn't make much sense to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I use CM6.1 now mainly because it's a bit snappier than CM5. A major feature that's missing for me is apps2sdext. Native froyo apps2sd still puts the data of apps in internal memory so apps2ext lets you have a lot more apps installed.
I had CM6 installed on my G1 and i was pretty slow. I also had apps randomly close because I guess the phone was running out of memory. SuperD with ram hack was really fast for me and I've had it installed for the past 4 or 5 months and haven't had any issues until yesterday but IDK if its a software or a hardware problem.

[Q] Should I stay or should I go?

Hi, I’ve been using my nook color sin January with rooted éclair running in it, and I’ve been wondering about if I should switch to another of the alternative ROMs available; this is my first Android device and I’m really pleased with it, and some of the terms used on this forums are really new to me, so my question is Should I stay with éclair or move to another versions available?
PS. I’m currently living in Mexico so the fact of losing the B&N store app wouldn’t be an issue for me.
Only you can evaluate what you need.
For me, I stay with rooted eclair (1.1). The only thing it's really missing is Flash, which I don't need. (QQ player actually lets me play sideloaded flv files) Ultra keyboard gives me cursor keys and copy/paste. I have Nookie Froyo on SD card, but so far it hasn' t seemed worth changing.
oh flash would be a great plus, but can you read the internal storage of the Nook when running Nookie Froyo?
Sorry, can't help on that; I've never tried.
Honeycomb is cool so far. Try it..
I've had great success with phiremod v4 CM7 rom(gingerbread). I've also used the Froyo 6.8 and honeycomb v4 2nd edition roms. Froyo was nice, but it kind of seems that development is winding down for it, in favor of CM7 and Honeycomb. Honeycomb was also cool, but leaves soooo much to be desired. At the moment few apps and games will run on it.
Just as a tip. Before you go and start flashing new roms, read the respective development forum threads. Nook Devs is nice, but their site is lacking alot of info currently on the development forum.
Best of luck, and get away from that stock B&N grossness.
I would recommend test driving the Nook Froyo 0.6.8 microSD card version (check NC development area).
I highly recommend you get a Class 6 microsd card and get SetCPU from the Market to overclock to 1.1 MHz. While you can use a Class 4 card to test, the Class 6 has become my daily tablet configuration (and I have the ability to go back to 1.1 eclair if I want).
Froyo has flash and better video than Eclair and HC (from what I've seen). Phiremod rom is an option but doesn't look quite there yet (maybe after a few builds). Flash may not be a deal breaker for some but it allows web pages to really appear as they were supposed to be designed without the gaps you would see without it (could argue that a lot of flash is just ads but websites look as they originally intended).
I've been checking my Nook Froyo build and don't think I can see the internal drive so not sure if this is an option.
