first timer pls be nice - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, i live on toronto, canada and i got an x1 from craigslist for 400$ like 2 weeks ago. i like it but i really want to have one of these custom roms on it. i plan to use the EnergyROM "Phoenix 2" 21877. but i have a few questions first.
i use a pay as you go sim card, and wanted to know if flashing my phone would remove my free incoming text messages, 1cent/min after 8pm calling, and other features that i have activated from my service provider(rogers wireless canada) another thing is that i do not have a data plan, but i can get unlimited wireless web surfing($7 a month), will i be able to use google maps with that, since it is different from a data plan?(currently i can use google maps with my wi-fi)
I already downloaded the custom NRGrom and there are 2 files in the archive. one is the kovsimg.nbh and the other is customRUU.exe (what is that?) . do i need to install any other programs to flash to this rom? i have windows mobile device centre on my pc already.
i read the tutorial ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446070) and one of the steps is to run X1_HardSPL.exe
what is that? the rest of the tutorial seems easy enough to me. if anybody would help it will be appreciated, thank you!
Also, any recommendations for ROMs that perform the best would be appreciated!

You'll need to flash hard-SPL before the ROM. That's what the X1_HardSPL.exe is. More instructions on hard-SPL here.

what about the features of my service plan, will they still be okay? do i remove my simcard b4 i do this?

Don't worry on those.
Your service provider didn't make any special configuration in your phone's operating system just to have those "free incoming text messages", etc.. The features and those packages configurations are setuped in your service provider's System.
If you want to upgrade, make sure you HardSPL'ed your x1 first like what @ipporek said..
AND FOR SAFETY AND PRECAUSIONS.
Make sure you removed your SIMCARD and MicroSD card before flashing your phone.
PREPARATION FOR FLASHING YOUR X1
It's not really necessary to to flash your phone by saving .NRG file in MicroSD card. You can do this be connecting your X1 in your computer using USB Cable and Make sure you have Windows Mobile Device Center (sorry, I use Windows 7, probably Vista users using different one?)
HardSPL'ing
once succeeded, you can flash different ROMs in your X1.
CustomRUU.exe
is a program used for installing/flashing ROMs in your X1
.NBH file
Chef's provides .NBH files.. this is an image (ROM) file which contains the cooked operating system. Once downloaded, make sure you renamed it "signed_ruu.nbh".
Make sure SIGNED_RUU.NBH and CustomRUU.exe are located in one folder.

Orange network Kaiser

I am about to get an Orange network branded Kaiser phone, does anyone know if this is identical in function to the unlocked HTC version ie:- wifi, GPS, not crippled, and secondly is it easy to re-flash the rom to get rid of the Orange branding or is this difficult and could easily cause a malfunction and lock the device.
Thanks
1) wifi and GPS all work fine.
2) The Orange homescreen is deselectable on Today settings, Item tab. You can then install the HTChome if you download it from here.
3) If you really want to flash the HTC rom (or a cooked one from here), I think its easy...but I havent bothered. Other than the colour scheme on the dialler page, its fine.
I have an orange branded kaiser, tomtom is not on it nor is wlm from stock, within an hr I had flashed the htc rom, giving me wlm etc and then installed tomtom from the thread in this forum and installed the maps etc from my other copy.
easy enough to do if you follow the instructions on this forum.
How you managed to get one? Retentions?
Mine was from O retail (as I couldnt talk to retentions til next month)
Thanks for all the info,
The company I work for has 6 mobile phones and we were contacted by Orange about an upgrade so I asked if we could upgrade to the Kaiser and they said yes no problem and no charge for the upgrade.
They are very keen on retaining business accounts at present. Make sure you get free calls between the six of you and a worthwhile data package.
AvengerPenguin,
Sorry to be a pain but I have never flashed a rom before and don't want to mess up can you reply with the link to the standard HTC rom and any simple instructions and also a link to the TomTom software as I have the maps I can use that I purchased for my old Artemis.
Thanks

[Q] Putting anti-theft app inside ROM?

How much will it be if we want to put one of the anti-theft apps inside the ROM, so that it can survive even the hard-resets?
I know that this need to be custom for each user, which means self cooked ROMs with the software installed, registered and configured for per-user.
It can be made through UC but if the SD is not there upon hard reset then it is useless.
has anybody tried it before? will it be hard to do?

Daran was offering to cook Sprite Terminator into personalized ROMs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448178&highlight=daran
Not sure if he's still doing that, but you could try contacting him.
i search for it too
i find the following program, but withou howto: http://remotetracker.sourceforge.net
I am interested too if its possible. THere are few tutorials to do that but I never been successful in doing it. Hope if someone does that.
i think gpsgate would be god.
It uses imei and (wifi or gprs) . log on the gpsgate page and see where is phone. if its cooked in for YOurself remember to turn off the service after reboot to save battery.
so if the phone will be stolen they will insert ovn card and as soon phone gets wifi or gprs it will send location .
cos if sim card is changed YOu cant send sms to phone.

Newbie HTC Tytn II owner query...help greatly appreciated

Hey everyone. I have had my Tytn2 for about 6 months now and am generally displeased with the speed of its operation. As it is my first Windows Mobile phone(v6.1) I hoped that it could supersede my older non smartphones but i am now currently doubting my investment. The idea of system optimisation and sub standard/non existant drivers has recentely come to my attention by surfing the internet trying to find the reasoning behind its sluggish operation. As i am not up to date with many technical terms used on this website and the reasonings behind the slowness of it i am making my post fairly general. I have reaslised though that there are things out there that can boost its speed and operation and make it an overall better phone.
If anyone has some favourite, worthwhile or must have tweaks i can do to my phone it would be much appreciated if you could fill me in, send me a link or generally point me in the right direction.
Cheers for your help in advance and thanks to the people out there who are working on these such things
Put a ROM on it that isn't loaded down with ATT bloatware, and HTC's slowness. You'll need to install a HardSPL on your device, SuperCID unlock your device, flash a radio, and choose a ROM to install on your device.

thankyou for your post. Excuse my ignnorance but what does a ROM actually do to the phone? I have no issues with doing so, i just really dont undertand what it does/the reasoning behind it. And also a radio? i have searched threads but there is so much about installing them etc but not many explinations on their workings. cheers k-semler
ok.. i have been looking around some more and found some more answers to my questions...so it basically boosts the performance? so once this is done what can i load onto my phone to make this all worthwhile? And also once this is done does is load as per normal, just faster? Or does the phone have a whole new layout etc. that the creator made?
cheers

The ROM is equivilant to the OS on a desktop computer, the radio allows communication via cellular, wi-fi, and GPS communications. The HardSPL is equivilant to the MBR on a desktop computer, and the Super CID is equivilant to the BIOS on a computer. (A locked CID will only allow you to install signed ROM's from either your telephone service provider, or HTC, while after a SuperCID unlock, you will be able to flash any ROM you so desire.)

The easiest way to describe it is if you went and bought a name brand computer, when you initially set up the OS, (or use the recovery discs that came with the computer), it will install the OS along with a ton of bloatware, half-functional trial ware, and other unwanted software. However, if you were to boot off of a Windows retail disc, you would have the same operating system, but without all the unnecessary software that the retailer included as an added "bonus". So yes, the computer will operate faster due to not being loaded down by unnessecary software.
Yes, once a new ROM is flashed to your phone, and it was a successful flash, it will boot up as normal, and go through the customization process. After the customization process, it will soft-reset the device, and your phone will boot as normal. It will be as fresh as it would be had it come out of the box that way. Yes, this means that you will lose your contacts list, emails, and everything else you have stored on the phone's main memory. (just like you would lose everything on your HDD if you wiped out your OS and installed it again).
To back up your contacts, simply copy the file PIM.VOL from the root of your device to a microSD card, or your desktop. After you have flashed the phone, rename the new PIM.VOL on the root of the device to PIM.OLD, and copy over your archived PIM.VOL to your phone. Soft reset your device, and boot it up like normal. After the phone restarts, verify you have your contacts list restored, and then delete the file PIM.OLD from your device. The same goes for any other data you may wish to preserve. Copy it off to an SD card, or your desktop computer. After you have flashed your phone, simply copy back all data you have archived. You will obviously need to re-install any applications you wish to have on your phone.
With a customized ROM, you can get anything from a bare-minimum install, (just the OS and nothing more), to a completely new layout with TouchFlo3D, Manala 2D, HTC Home, etc. Look at the ROM development forum, decide what you want your phone to do, and go with it. There are also betas for Windows Mobile 6.5 if you wish to try it, as well as ROM's with PIE 8.5, Opera, and virtually any combination you could possibly want to customize the layout of your phone. The phone will be as a completely different device if that is what you so desire. As far as customisation programs, look into Advanced Configurator 3.3 or Kaiser Tweak. You can also install a registry editor and do the edits manually if you so desire.
thanks for that, that simplifies it somewhat. Should i be attempting to do this to my phone in fear of a major screwup if i lack in depth undertanding of what i am actually doing? i can download the files and follow steps and probably get it right but if something goes wrong i will have not a clue of how to fix it or what i did wrong. Thats my only fear.... what your thoughts?
also can you recommend any decent ROMs for a first timer/do you know anyone i can ask?
RE: Fears
Yeah, first time flashing is pretty scary. Believe me, I know all too well how nerve wracking flashing ROMs can be the first couple of times. Just make sure you follow the directions to a "T" and you should be fine. =]
But, if by some freak accident or some screw-up on your part...there ARE a few fixes depending on what broke. There are various threads in the ROM area on this particular thing.
With that being said, just follow the flashing instructions, make sure you backup your PIM, and then pick yourself a good ROM! =]
For first-timers I'd go with either a standard 6.0-6.1 ROM or something by Dutty or L26. It's been so long and so many flashes since my first that I've honestly forgotten which one I started w/ but Dutty & L26 both make wonderful ROMs and I've had various builds by both.
Best of luck!
i am with 3 mobile: does this influence which ROM i chose. Or is this dealt with during the unlocking phase?
That is dealt with during the unlocking step. After you unlock your device, it will not matter who your carrier is. You could insert a SIM from Hong Kong if you wanted to.

Trinity upgrading and settings on O2

Hi all, first can i give a big thanx to all on here who have contributed and made it possible for me to use my trinity again after an awful "upgrade" to an LG Renoir, may it rest in peices.
After following all the relevant steps my old Trinity is now working a treat so i thought i'd post and mention some of the possible pitfalls that a complete noob like me might have to deal with.
First was error 260 that i read quite a lot about but could not fix. having followed the relevant steps for using Vista to upgrade, including updating the USB driver i kept getting error 260. This was easily fixed eventually by using all the same cables and ROMS and radio version by using a PC running XP instead.
If you want to update your radio version, as i did to get GPS back working, i copied the relevant radio RUU_signed.nbh file to a FAT32 formatted card and renamed it trinim.nbh and inserted the card in to the phone. The update started automatically, finished, the phone reset and hey presto, new radio and working GPS.
Eventual;ly i had an unlocked Trinity working with an O2 SIM card but could not use the internet or push e-mail as i didn't know what settings i had to change or where to change them. After a phone call to O2 they told me as they didn't sell the phone they didn't support it and wouldn't give me any idea of the settings i needed. A quick internet search and i found a little app, i think on Modaco, that once you have your phone connected via ActiveSync you just run and select the network you want, all the usual suspects are there, and it updates your phone settings automatically.
All i need now is a new battery, charging every 6 hours is getting boring, and i'm good to go.
Sorry if this is long winded but for a complete noob, as i am, some times you need it like that.
Thanks again
Steve

are you trying to use internet sharing with no data plan? if so, that wont work
Like "leemoss84" commented, you can't use internet sharing if you don't have data plan, as internet sharing is using the data plan of your phone for browsing internet on computers.
But if you want to use the wireless (Wi-Fi) feature of the phone without using the data plan, disable the 'Proxy'
Start > Tools > Proxy Manager > Disable Proxy
also in the Settings > Connections > Select Network
select "My ISP" instead of MEdia Net
once you've done this, you can access wireless network without being charged by AT&T.
I do have Data plan
I do have a Data Plan with AT&T with unlimited internet, but At&t wants me to charge me an extra $60 a month! just for tethering with my laptop
or to use the phone as a modem.
I want to know if there is a way to jump the $60.00 a month they want to charge on top of the unlimited internet and voice plan Im paying now.
Thanks in advance.

To tether undetected, just make sure both your internet connections in "Settings\Connections\Connections\Advanced Select Networks" are set to MediaNet and take out any proxy server in "Settings\Connections\Connections\Tasks\Manage Existing Connections"
I do it all the time.
Bruce thanks, so I went to take out the proxy server in "Settings\Connections\Connections\Tasks\Manage Existing Connections"
I i see a message on the TASK tab " The Connection is pre-configured it cannot be modified
I didn't know that would work unless you use a custom rom. I wasn't able to tether untill I flashed with dutty's. after that.. a few changes (media net, etc. mentioned above.) and I was off and running..
can you please recommend how can I flash my phone?
at this moment I'm lock with At&t
what will be the best option to flash my phone?
step one assume you have topaz (htc pure) in my case
go here to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520312
then once thats done go here and choose your rom that you want to flash
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=486
I recomend NRGZ28 Max manila http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=562942
basicly when you download the rom if everything went well with step one just open the RUU file (looks like a topaz phone icon) and follow instructions. Make sure your phone is connected via sync
again this is a fast tutorial theres more detail ones around here in these forums
I had the same trouble when I first got the pure. There is a way to use ICS on the original rom. You have to change some registry values. I searched the internet and found the instuctions and it worked. But since then I have used many different roms that are better than the original and don't have that problem. I would recommend the energy rom. Remember to install hard spl first.

Don't you have a app "Remove Proxy server"?

might as well just install a simple app that is 2kb. it will save time considering you didnt post the edit and when you hard reset you dont have to go looking for it again, all you gotta do is install the app.
I will do some more research
then I need a app to manipulate the Registry on my HTC PURE with AT&T.
thanks guys

WOW ! I got it the HTC PURE AT&T Solution to install the latest "Hard SPL"
Wow!
First thank you for all your contributions and inputs trying to help me with my problem Flashing the HTC PURE AT&T
Here is what I did:...
I was having a lot of problems trying to install the latest "Hard SPL", specially with USB communication and even when my phone was connected via ActiveSync.
I tried the automatic Flash and the manual with no results........ I was about to give up!
Also I download the "enablerapinew.cab" and installed on my phone main memory and ran the .cab and I got the message "installation of enablerapinew.cab was unsuccessful"- so i was going NUTS ! and I tried another .cab files to see if I was getting the same error and .... same thing I tried different .cab files like TOMTOM , google maps and a Games and all of them gave me the same message !"installation of enablerapinew.cabwas unsuccessful"
mmm........
So what I did was I reset the phone to the Manufacturers setup ( you know entering the password) 1234 and the phone will be like the first time you turned on.
so after that I install the enablerapinew.cabb and the installation was successful ! and everything else work !
now I have the ROM i wanted ! and .....
KISS GOODBYE AT&T !!!

yeah, a good hard reset will work wonders sometimes when you got a problem that cant be fixed. congrats.
so i have a question... i am running a custom rom on my phone, but my dad wants to basically do what the OP wanted, internet tethering without paying for the extra tethering plan. i cannot convince him to let me flash a new rom, likes the phone as is, just wants internet sharing. if i run that .cab on his phone, do i have to then make registry changes, or will the cab do all the work? what else would i need to do to give him his internet sharing?

Just install the cab.
AT&T tracks tethering through their proxy server, the reg edit just takes out the proxy settings as does the cab.
Its the same tweak, just different ways to get there.
To verify it worked go to Settings\Connections\Connections\Manage Existing Connections\Proxy Settings and confirm it is blank.
the "enablerapinew.cab" this CAB is for phones with problem installing the Hard SPL, the "enablerapinew.cab" will enable the phone to install the "Hard SPL" and them you need to flash the ROM , on my case I did a hard reset and them install the "enablerapinew.cab" them run the cab , and them flash the Rom, and after that I was able to share internet w/out problems
