Touch pro2 stuck at tricolor bootloader screen - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development

OK i tried getting help at the hardspl thread but just getting a generic answer.
I was wondering if there is anyone who can point me in the right direction or hold my hand so to say with step by step instruction on possibly fixing the problem i currently have.
here is what i had performed to get to where i am at right now.
I had my phone hardspl. been flashing different roms then stayed with one. then today my phone wasnt able to activesync and the usb wasnt being recognized so i wasnt able to activesync, or use phone as a disk drive or internet sharing but the phone would still charge through usb. i called tmobile they are sending me a phone ill get it in about a week in the meantime i need to make this one back to stock.
So i downloaded and flashed the tmobile stock rom which i found here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550975 after that was installed.
I then downloaded the tmobile splash screen which was provided in a link found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4592520&postcount=163
i then downgraded the radio.
after doing all that all what was left was to change the hardspl to relock to spl. well being that my usbport was not being detected by computer to use activesync being that your phone needs to be synced in order to use the rhodiumsplrelocker.exe program. so i ran the program and when the files showed up from the program i took the RUU_signed.nbh file and moved it into another folder and renamed it to rhodimg.nbh and placed on my memory card thinking this would relock the phone using the sd card loader method..
I ran it and then the phone frooze. it rebooted and when it did this is what shows up
When i try to put the stock rom image file back on my memory card as i was told to do... after the first screen with the tricolor it then goes into a second screen with the words loading and thats it...i let it run like this for 20minutes and there was no change. heres what that screen looks like
is there anyone who may help me i would appreciate it greatly. ill be willing to make a donation to you for a solution that really works.

Connect to your device via MTTY (delete the NBH on your SD for good measure), and in the MTTY terminal, simply type this command:
Code:
[FONT=Courier New][B]set 16 0[/B][/FONT]
After that, it should boot back to Windows Mobile just fine. Good luck

can you send me the mtty program or send me a link or direct me to where i can get this mtty program much appreciated
edit: i tried mtty program and its not working. the program needs to access the usb port on phone. the first problem i was having was that the computer was no longer to read the usb port on phone due to a problem with the usb hardware. so any fix that may require a usb to computer connection may not work...if theres a way to put a file on the memory card that would work to fix or to have it boot to windows without going into the loader all the time that would help.

I just looked at the pictures in the first post, and that SPL is the shipping SPL, and not HardSPL. Therefore, it doesn't matter if the phone boots or not, since you've made everything stock, and they have nothing on you. You can just say that your phone started doing this and you don't know why, and if you play dumb, they'll have no reason to suspect otherwise.

you need to find a computer with a working usb port. Mtty is your best way out of this. It's a pretty simple problem that you have actually. mtty can be quirky so don't give up!

I have the same problem and the issue isn't our computer is the actual MINI USB port on the phone that no longer works

Um, i hate to tell you, but that same thing happened to me. I got it all back to stock, called HTC , sent it in for repair, they kept it for 45 freeking days. I just got it back. Cost $20.
Good luck. I tried everything before sending it in. Nothing worked.

Im just wondering if sending it to T-mobile that way would cause a charge to me

usb not working
ok this is for everyone who has tried to help and i really do appreciate it. but one thing people seem to keep forgetting about is you have to remember the USB PORT on the phone has MALFUNCTIONED meaning it doesnt work anymore. So for those of you who have come up with try using MTTY program...well the thing is you need to have a working USB in order for that to even work. so as i have mentioned before is there any program out there that would help by trying some rebooting program you can install on the memory card or what would really help is if the people who made the hardspl and the splrelocker would make a splrelocker program that can all be run off of the memory card with no need for the USB port because if and when that usb port is no longer working and you need to return for warranty reasons then it would be a great help being you can still relock the spl even with a non working usb port.

ok, so everybody started out not being able to activesync due to a malfunctioning mini-USB port.
If this was the case, how was anyone able to downgrade the spl in preparation for a return.... which normally requires a working MiniUSB connection?
Are you absolutely sure this isn't the (more common) PnP-doesn't-recognize-the-port issue?

when i first received the phone ... yes the usb port was functioning well and i was able to hardspl my phone... and everytime i would flash a rom i would put the rhodimg.nbh file on the root of my memory card and do the hold volume button down and hit the reset button allowing me to boot to the tricolor screen without the need for activesync or usb to flash a rom. during the use and life of my phone the usb port malfunctioned maybe from wear and tear who knows...so even with the usb dying im still able to flash roms to my phone through the memory card which i could use a memory card reader to put the rhodimg.nbh file onto and then put memory card into phone and reboot the phone while holding down the voldown button still letting me access the bootloader screen without the need for usb. so my thing is if a problem develops during this process how do you fix it when the usb no longer works.

So your SPL isn't downgraded then? That would make sense given the problem you cite. I'm hoping you say that it is because that means there's still hope b/c I don't know of a way to do the downgrade from SD. The only way you can communicate with the BL is through the USB port afaik.

Correct me if im wrong, the screen where he is stuck (See screenshot post #1), looks like original SPL? If so, how can T-Mobile even notice it has been reflashed? What im trying to say is, if he just play dumb, he should get warrantee just fine, since it looks all original to me.

good point... looks like yours is one option. Still perplexing how the downgrade could have occurred with a bad miniUSB port... There are some real quirks getting mtty to connect. Some of them had to do with getting USB active on the BL screen... I haven't used the utility since I had my TyTN in the days before soft/hardSPL however.

not sure where you ended up with this, but I ran across the following thread and thought about your problem:

It shows the many things that are needed for successful USB tri-color connect with mtty.

ok, well, do you have a GSM tp2? or a CDMA/GSM one? because it says RHOD500 modelid on the screen but I'm not convinced that you actually have a CDMA worldphone...
if you are not sure, then tell me what carrier the device is from, that'll give me a hint if it's GSM or CDMA/GSM.

Flashing tomorrow, do I have everything?

Okay, so I decided on Romeos 4.1. I am trying to make sure i have everything, but I am getting a little confused. When i downloaded the No_radio romeos 4.1, unraring i get the rom and a KaiserCustomRUU.exe. Is that(.exe) my hard spl??
Do I need anything else?
I assume I may need the jump spl, but just not sure.
THanks for helping a first timer flasher guy.
No
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922
download any version of your choice, install it first *VERY IMPORTANT*
then install romeos 4.1, dont forget to get a compatable radio with that, or just download the one with a radio.
thanks a bunch. jusr curious, what is this soft spl thingy?

Please do not take offense to this... But if you really don't know the answer to that question, you are not ready to flash your phone. Go back to the Kaiser Wiki and read on up all the information there.
No offense taken. I develop medical software for a what i call "monopoly" healthcare company. However, reading up on what needs to be done to simply flash a phone, keeps taking me in circles.
Read the ENTIRE Wiki section on flashing your phone, it'll save you a LOT of problems. Seriously, don't do it blindly. You could do like some silly folks have done and flash a ROM or Radio with a SPL Flasher, etc, which will cause you problems. There's a lot of smart people here who can problem help recover your phone but save yourself the trouble!
Personally, here's an outline of what I did:
Decide which software you want to reinstall, make sure you have all of your serial numbers and cabs on hand.
Also I suggest writing down any 'complicated' settings so you can get back to work without too much fiddling.
Backup and get original ROM and Radio (just in case I needed to go back)
Hard Reset
Install HardSPL 3.29 (as suggested by the ROMeOS Cook), verify it's installed
Install ROMeOS 4.2 (it's coming in a few days, I'd wait..)
Install a suggested radio (he lists three in his thread)
Hard reset again
Reinstall your software by hand (don't try to restore from backup)

The steps listed in the post above are the exact process you need to follow. Just go to the Wiki and research each bullet-point listed. Until last week there was no section in the Wiki for the 3.xx HardSPL's, so I added it.
As long as you understand the process outlined above, you will not fail.
I know that when I started for the first time I was a bit worried about the out come and I felt confused. It's hard to accept that what is in the wiki is all that you need, and it's also hard to see that it's very simple when you see pages and pages of things. When I flashed back in Nov. for the first time, the instructions were so good that they took you through pretty much every screen..
Didn't there used to be a Youtube video on this?
You guys are the best. No matter how dumb my questions are(and they are), i have yet to hear a smart-a$$ remark back, which is nice, and shows people are willing to help.
I think khaytsus outlined everything i wanted, and will try when 4.2 comes out. I did go through a tutorial from the at&t forums, with a bunch of files to make the OS look like an iphone, and it is really cool. Baby steps i say.
I hope to fully flash, and get into the nitty gritty this week when 4.2 comes out!
:O)
ensure HardSpl installed
use a labtop (avoid power failure, short circuits)
have a shipped rom handy nearby - first use of cooked roms may be different so have a plan B
dont worry we are here for support
best of luck

1. Plug the device into your PC (it stays plugged in until step 7)
2. Copy Jump/Soft to your device. It can be downloaded here
3. Take out your SD card & SIM Card. (you can take these out before you start step 1)
4. Run Jump/Soft SPL on your device <-- you have to navigate to the program called "JumpSPL1.56-KAIS" and click it (it will be an icon of kermit the frog)
5. Wait for the bootloader screen to appear and "USB" to show on your Kaiser.
6. Right-click activesync (at the bottom right of your computer screen, usually), go into connection settings and make sure Allow USB Connections is unchecked
7. Unplug your device from the USB port, wait 5 - 20 seconds, plug it back in.
8. Run KaiserCustomRUU.exe and flash this SPL from your desktop
*Directions taken from kyphur's FAQ posted here. It's post #2*
By the way, one other detail (I'll update my original post too), I personally have always preferred SD Card updates. Always seems like there's less to go wrong.
The HardSPL (afaik) must be done via USB, but once that's done, you can follow instructions to update the ROM or Radio via USB or SD.
Seems to me that SD updates are faster and you can do them 'on the fly', particularly the radio.. I've read of people who change radio perhaps a couple times a day, it only takes a few minutes with the SD card.
I am pretty sure I did it in that exact order. I will try it one more time to see though.

ROTFLMAO!!!! At least he understands proper use of the . Now lets work on proper sentence structure. Was the above post an interrogative or declarative statement?

I'm a retard and think I have a brick now, please help

So I've flashed plenty a rom in my day, but for some reason this time I forgot to flash back to an official rom. I was running SNN Diamond, and was flashing to CR86 Touch HD .5 and forgot to flash the T-mobile ROM first and now all it does is boot the first flash screen and everything is the same except the OS version is different. I tried hard reset, but nothing works. Please tell me someone can fix this.
So...
Flash original.... if not...
Try Drugstore solution DIY thread i havent the link but is something like stuck on splash screen search a little...
Not Downgrade dont cause this ISSUE...
So here the deal now. For the last few hours its been trying to boot to the new OS and failed so it reboots and tries again. At a few points I have been able to get to align my screen but then it reboots again. Eventually I was able to establish an activesync at one point and took my chance and tried to flash the T-mobile ROM. It was at about 20% when it entered the 3 colored screen and was disconnected from my computer. After a few failed recovery attempts by the T-moblie ROM (the wizard would keep restarting every few seconds) the update utility gave up on me and in other words said go find a service provider. It stays at the 3 colored screen fine, I go to update, gets to about 1% and starts spazzing out again by constantly restarting.
tl;dr: stuck at 3 colored screen, keeps restarting itself after trying to flash T-moble.
Its due to weak battery,perhaps its not having enough juice to complete the flash.Get the battery fully charged or may be the battery has seen its days,get a new one.
I just tried the Cingular ROM (since it its the Cingular 8125) and I got up to 85% then the progress bar went red and hung up then gave up. The error I keep getting is 302 and how can I charge my battery in bootloader? I tried using Wizard Love and got this:
{

}
Here's what I'd try,
First remove the battery out of the wizard, next put it in. Without turning the wizard on, plug it into your wall charger and wait to see if the light on the phone turns orange. If it does then let it charge till the light turns green and try flashing a stock rom again.
If that doesn't work, you may have to get a new battery and one of those cradles that lets you charge an extra battery without it being in the phone.

Unfortunately I tried that, the problem is when I plug in my charger it automatically boots up to the bootloader, if I try to turn it off, its stays off for half a second, led turns orange for another half a second and bam, its back to bootloader.
I think i had the same probleme where my device just keep on reboting on the splash screen. I was able o load new rom but just the os version change. My problem was due to an eprom format error. You can see it during a hard reset. There is a fix for it, if your got the format error during a hard reset (To perform a Hard Reset a)Press and hold the Comm Manager button and Voice Command button on the device b)Keep the two above mentioned buttons pressed,and at the same time,use the stylus to lightly press and hold the Reset button.The phone will restart and ask for confirmation,click 'yes',it'll boot up into windows.), use it.

yeah the hard reset doesn't do anything, just goes back to bootloader. I'm going to try drugstores DIY when I get a battery charger cause I can't charge in bootloader mode

Same issue happens. My wizard calls it quits (around 46%) and reboots. Battery is full every time I try a flash.
Are you sure that you are CID and SIM unlocked?
You can use Wizard Service tool to check.
Highly recomend this tool.
Once you see your information, post it here so that we can help you further.
It should also tell you if you have a G3 or G4 so that someone who is more experienced with G4 (If that is what you have) can help you.
WST doesn't detect my device Wouldn't my CID be unlocked from upgrading it to WM6 in the first place? I know my SIM is unlocked cause I was using t-mobile with a cingular device when it was working. Also its a G3 device.

If you'd flashed to newer roms previously then that SHOULD mean your phone is CID unlocked. Have you attempted the button rom flash yet? It's small and fast, May work for you.

brick fixed brick again, SPL troubles

Y does my phone brick everytime i try to flash SPL? i know to do radio 1st, the SPL 2nd, then reboot, but when i reboot, it brick, this happened 5 times in a row, just today alone
It's not a brick if you can flash the radio and spl again. After flashing the spl you have to flash a new ROM because the spl removes the ROM.
make sure you flash the right spl for the right device, i flashed hard-spl to my 2nd gen dream and had a brick, 2005 spl worked on the replacement device

If you can get into the bootloader the phone is not bricked. Your terminology is incorrect. What you have is known as a soft brick.

ummm... aren't you supposed to install a ROM after you upgrade your SPL? BTW, don't tell us you know what a brick is and then show that your phone is not bricked... I'm pretty sure if there was a fix for the brick it would be big news.

somebody can explain what is that ?? which device can I install hard SPL ?
I would like some clarification too... Last night I tried rooting my Rogers HTC Dream with the step-by-step guide using CyanoGen Mod, but on the very last step (Where it should have booted back into normalcy), it just stayed at the Rogers logo forever.
I don't think it's entirely bricked as I can get into the SPL thing (That's where you can do 'Fastboot USB', right?). I'm not sure how to get it back to normal though, I tried doing 'fastboot boot recovery.img' while the phone is in the Fastboot usb screen, and it reboots but it just sits at the Rogers logo again.
Is this thing bricked, or do I have options?
Okay, I did some more reading and now i understand a bit better...
What I have access to is the Bootloader, but I can't seem to get into the SPL. What steps do I need to take to get it back to working condition? I have a Rogers HTC Dream and I must have messed up when trying to apply the Cyanogen ROM
Holy Crap! A way to fix a Brick????!!!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!!
Hey if there's a way to fix a brick let me know cuz WOW! I would have gotten further with the last G1 I sent back to T-Mobile if I could have fixed it myself! Check your statements as you pertain it to being "BRICKED." BRICKED is not going past the T-Mobile G1 screen or not starting up at all! These newbies need to get it right! WOW! This one did give me a GREAT laugh today! This just made my day better now that I've had a good laugh!
can you get into recovery after the spl? home+power

Only the t-mobile g1/ADP1
rogers from canada will brick
use 1.33.2005 for rogers. its safe on that phone
the spl is the bootloader (well just think of it as the same)
in command prompt, when you type
Code:
fastboot devices
can you see your phone?
Also, if you booted off of the HTC recovery rom, your actual recovery is being replaced on each boot.
Search for the
"flash_image not found" thread in this section and look at sleepy_sanchez's method to remove the script that replaces the recovery.
EDIT
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery *name of recovery*
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot

try that
making sure the images are in the same folder as the fastboot
if that doesnt work, try

You want to flash a rom but are stuck in spl bootload try this, and make your y cable

Hello, i had a problem with my Htc HD7 so i installed nodo rom again and all actualizations again my bad that did solved my problems with wi fi and got me with a spl that could be decreased with normal methods so i found this methodhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21896081&postcount=286, but it didnt explained me how to make the cable so i found it here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893152 , so here is my experience:
First i had to find those old female cable i had here in the house once i found them i put them like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
then i extracted RUU_Signed.nbh from a Pre-NoDo Shipped ROM and renamed it to SCHUIMG.NBH(only for htc hd7) and copied it to a 8g flashdrive other sizes biger than 1g will work, i allready prepared the file for you guys so you dont have to look for the entire rom here it is its in two parts because of file limitations of mediafire-link part1: http://rapidshare.com/files/2782802394/SCHUIMG.part1.rar
link part2:http://rapidshare.com/files/3550720848/SCHUIMG.part2.rar
So the steps:
important HD7 must be at least 50% battery powered
1- make y-cable like picture
2-copy SCHUIMG.NBH to flashdrive
3-Plug the male conector in to computer
4- plug flash drive in female conector
5-boot your HD7 in USB Loader Mode, very important not in Bootloader!
to do that hold down Power, Volume Down, and Camera button! all at the same time.
6- With the cable provided with your HD7 conect your phone to the other end of the female conector
7-Now you Hd7 start to recognize the file SCHUIMG.NBH and the process begins , your phone will start reboot several times until it finishes.
8- Put your phone in Bootloader mode hold power and volume down
Then you can install a shiped rom provided here: part1:http://rapidshare.com/files/891722600/RUU_Schubert_HTC_Europe_1.60.401.01_Radio_5.52.09.16_22.33a.50.10_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.part1.rar part2:http://rapidshare.com/files/390128157/RUU_Schubert_HTC_Europe_1.60.401.01_Radio_5.52.09.16_22.33a.50.10_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.part2.rar
9-Put your phone in Bootloader mode hold power and volume down,
conect to your computer
and then useHSPL / RSPL for HTC WP7 First Generation provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16189671&postcount=1
And now you are free to install any rom you want on your HD7 !
It worked for me very well!
Thanks to sh4d0w86 , Cotulla and viperbjk
If you think this is useful for you please press the Thanks button
TNX ruyzalim,
I build the cable, and it works well on my HD7.
Now I'm installing Nextgen+ Rom )

Hey buddy! Just wanted to make sure that your in USB host mode and not in bootloader mode. Volume down + press the camera button together and power on the device. The screen will show an image of the device hooked to a computer.
Also if your SD card doesn't have the goldcard code installed on it, you'll get the message "Not allow".

Yeah you can buy one from Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0041CFFBM/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?qid=1334327842&ref_=sr_1_17&sr=8-17
Alot of times home made Y cables don't work because they are too long in length and that causes a problem with transferring the data. So I would try and shorten the cables on yours first and also make sure you have everything connected to the right ends and then try it again.

Take a look at Shadows tutorial, it explains the process and steps. Since your bootloader is 5.xxx you will have to either use the goldcard/Ycable method to downgrade your OSPL from 5.xxx to under 3.xxx to install RSPL/HSPL and then you can flash a custom rom of your choice.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I made my cable and I got my phone to the grey screen that says "Enter USB Host Mode. .", and my flash drive lights up but the phone doesn't do anything. I've also tried hooking everything up with my phone on the screen with the picture of a phone plugging into a computer, and still nothing happens.
What am I missing here?

Try this...these are some common problems with getting stuck in USB host mode:
Sometimes if the Y cable is too long in length it won't work properly in transferring the data.
There are 2 .nhb files, so make sure your downloading the correct .nbh file (ruu_signed.nbh) and rename the ruu_signed.nbh to SCHUIMG.nbh Has to be capitalized letters when renaming the file.
Make sure the correct ends are plugged in where they should be.
Sometimes the camera button will get stuck in and prevent the device from flashing correctly.
Make sure the SD card is wiped clean and place the file inside the SD card and patch it with the goldcard tool.
Try a different flash drive/card reader.

That's usually the most common problem too... A card reader and small SD card like a 1gb to 4gb work the best, you can use larger SD cards but you should partition it and needs to be formatted to FAT32

It should work just fine! Try it out... Sometimes you have to switch around the connections on the female ends of the cable, between the SD card reader and the power supply to see what one sends and which one receives data and it should work perfectly.

[Q] Not downgrading at all

It is an O2 UK locked phone. The 16GB model.
Every time I try to downgrade the SPL I end up with some kind of error. Mostly Error 260 or if it's different, it'll be close to that number. It always says stuff like communication error and connection error. I'll get more specific details on the errors tomorrow but long story short, nothing works.
Is there anyone out there with a similar problem or who knows how to fix this?
Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm being a noob,
Huzi
Also, can a mod move this to Q&A? Just realised where I've posted. My bad.

Ok.
Not sure what method you're trying to downgrade with.. I'll give you a run down on them and how it works.
Your SPL has to be at or lower than 3.xxx to install RSPL/HSPL, (which is required to install a custom rom) once that's achieved then you can install a custom rom of your choice.
Theses are the only methods available to downgrade SPL 5.xxx
SLSPL by Ansar- If your trying this method it won't work, your firmware revision # doesn't match, it has to .401
Goldcard/ Y cable method - Requires a Y cable, either home made or purchased, a card reader and a clean/wiped small 1gb to 4gb SD card formatted to FAT32 (larger gb cards will work but have to be formatted to FAT32 and partitioned) or a flash drive and download the goldcard tool and a stock/shipped Pre-NoDo or NoDo rom.. The card reader works better though. Putt the rom on the SD card, patch it with the goldcard tool, put the device in USB host mode, connect the Y cable and the flash process will begin. Your spl should be lowered to 3.xxx or lower, then you can install RSPL/HSPL and flash a custom rom. Tutorials here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597837
Zune restore point. Since your buddy had the phone before Mango, you can restore the device to a Pre-Mango state,(you will have to use the computer he did it on) this won't downgrade the SPL, but the re-update process process through Zune will change the SPL to 4.xxx just before it reinstalls Mango. The key here is, the device has to be updated all the way back to Mango and the device will reboot twice, once to change the SPL to 4.xxx and once to install Mango, at that point you have to stop the update process before the the next update is installed which is the HTC Firmware update, if you install that then it will change the SPL back to 5.xxx. Once the device is back on SPL 4.xxx then you can flash a stock/shipped Pre-NoDo or NoDo rom (via bootloader mode) and lower the SPL to 3.xxx or lower, install RSP/HSPL and then flash a custom rom. Zubair's tutorial here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362194
You can follow Shadows full step by step tutorial on how to, Downgrade SPL, flash XSPL and install a custom rom. It has all the links for Goldcard, Zune restore method and all the stock/shipped roms and radios.

Ansar's method failed bit time. I was rather hoping to not go down the y cable route but it looks like I'll have to try. The reason I didn't wanna do it is coz I cannot strip down wires to save my life Although I didn't know you could purchase one. The Zune restore wouldn't work either coz his computer died a while ago (the psu blew) and he just threw it out without realising he could have kept the hard drive. Also, is the goldcard method different to the y cable method or is the y cable the way to use the goldcard tool?

Basically they are the same...The Y cable is used for the goldcard method, but you can also use just the Y cable method without patching the rom with the goldcard tool. Seems as thought the goldcard method is more successful.
You can check on Amazon to purchase the Y cable, should run around $5
Ok so I tried the Ansar's method once again and I'm getting an error 260. I've tried restarting and even factory resetting the phone and restarting my PC as suggested but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Do you have windows mobile device center installed on your PC? It installs the proper drivers for the device to sync to the PC.
Make sure that the drivers installed properly for the device when it's in bootloader mode. It installs a different set of drivers for it in bootloader mode than when the device is just on and synced to the PC.
Error 260 is open connection error.
Try this.. click on the .nbh file, drag and drop it to the RUUwrapper, (it should highlight and say "open file with") the RUUwrapper will open and follow the prompts on the screen.
Hopefully that will work for you.

Ok.. That's good it installed the Qualcomm drivers, that's a step in the right direction.
Start fresh and close out all the programs on the PC, even Zune and disconnect your device.
Open the whole SLSPL folder and reconnect the device to the PC, wait for it to sync, (it may even install more drivers) "Serial" in the white section of BL mode will change to "USB" now and then just the double click on the RUUwrapper. it should work!

Success and failure.
It recognised the device and it started updating. It then failed and said "Error 294: Invalid Vender ID"
Could it be because my phone is the o2 UK model? Could I just use an older o2 UK RUU to downgrade?

Hey man! I got a y cable and a memory card reader etc and I've followed the guide but when I connect the phone and put it in USB Host Mode and all that stuff it just keeps rebooting into host mode then shuts off and repeats. Any thoughts?

Try switching the connections of the card reader and the phone on the Y cable.
Mine was doing the same thing yesterday when I downgraded my replacement phone. I was trying it with a SD card reader and a 8gb flash drive (I even partitioned it down to 1gb) and both of them were going through the loop from "Enter USB host mode, to Loading, then to bootloader mode."
So I went and bought a SanDisk 5 in 1 SD card reader and as soon as I hooked it up everything worked and updated the device.
You might want to try a different card reader and see if that works.
