[Q] Not downgrading at all - HD7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys, I'm finally biting the bullet and I'm gonna ask you guys. Been through too many forums and none have worked. So I bought my HD7 off my friend who has had it since before Mango. He updated it before he gave me it.
The attached pics have the specs on them.

It is an O2 UK locked phone. The 16GB model.
Every time I try to downgrade the SPL I end up with some kind of error. Mostly Error 260 or if it's different, it'll be close to that number. It always says stuff like communication error and connection error. I'll get more specific details on the errors tomorrow but long story short, nothing works.
Is there anyone out there with a similar problem or who knows how to fix this?
Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm being a noob,
Huzi

Also, can a mod move this to Q&A? Just realised where I've posted. My bad.

Ok.
Not sure what method you're trying to downgrade with.. I'll give you a run down on them and how it works.
Your SPL has to be at or lower than 3.xxx to install RSPL/HSPL, (which is required to install a custom rom) once that's achieved then you can install a custom rom of your choice.
Theses are the only methods available to downgrade SPL 5.xxx
SLSPL by Ansar- If your trying this method it won't work, your firmware revision # doesn't match, it has to .401
Goldcard/ Y cable method - Requires a Y cable, either home made or purchased, a card reader and a clean/wiped small 1gb to 4gb SD card formatted to FAT32 (larger gb cards will work but have to be formatted to FAT32 and partitioned) or a flash drive and download the goldcard tool and a stock/shipped Pre-NoDo or NoDo rom.. The card reader works better though. Putt the rom on the SD card, patch it with the goldcard tool, put the device in USB host mode, connect the Y cable and the flash process will begin. Your spl should be lowered to 3.xxx or lower, then you can install RSPL/HSPL and flash a custom rom. Tutorials here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597837
Zune restore point. Since your buddy had the phone before Mango, you can restore the device to a Pre-Mango state,(you will have to use the computer he did it on) this won't downgrade the SPL, but the re-update process process through Zune will change the SPL to 4.xxx just before it reinstalls Mango. The key here is, the device has to be updated all the way back to Mango and the device will reboot twice, once to change the SPL to 4.xxx and once to install Mango, at that point you have to stop the update process before the the next update is installed which is the HTC Firmware update, if you install that then it will change the SPL back to 5.xxx. Once the device is back on SPL 4.xxx then you can flash a stock/shipped Pre-NoDo or NoDo rom (via bootloader mode) and lower the SPL to 3.xxx or lower, install RSP/HSPL and then flash a custom rom. Zubair's tutorial here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362194
You can follow Shadows full step by step tutorial on how to, Downgrade SPL, flash XSPL and install a custom rom. It has all the links for Goldcard, Zune restore method and all the stock/shipped roms and radios.

Ansar's method failed bit time. I was rather hoping to not go down the y cable route but it looks like I'll have to try. The reason I didn't wanna do it is coz I cannot strip down wires to save my life Although I didn't know you could purchase one. The Zune restore wouldn't work either coz his computer died a while ago (the psu blew) and he just threw it out without realising he could have kept the hard drive. Also, is the goldcard method different to the y cable method or is the y cable the way to use the goldcard tool?

Basically they are the same...The Y cable is used for the goldcard method, but you can also use just the Y cable method without patching the rom with the goldcard tool. Seems as thought the goldcard method is more successful.
You can check on Amazon to purchase the Y cable, should run around $5

Ok so I tried the Ansar's method once again and I'm getting an error 260. I've tried restarting and even factory resetting the phone and restarting my PC as suggested but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Do you have windows mobile device center installed on your PC? It installs the proper drivers for the device to sync to the PC.
Make sure that the drivers installed properly for the device when it's in bootloader mode. It installs a different set of drivers for it in bootloader mode than when the device is just on and synced to the PC.
Error 260 is open connection error.
Try this.. click on the .nbh file, drag and drop it to the RUUwrapper, (it should highlight and say "open file with") the RUUwrapper will open and follow the prompts on the screen.
Hopefully that will work for you.

It's no problem man!
Ok.. That's good it installed the Qualcomm drivers, that's a step in the right direction.
Start fresh and close out all the programs on the PC, even Zune and disconnect your device.
Open the whole SLSPL folder and reconnect the device to the PC, wait for it to sync, (it may even install more drivers) "Serial" in the white section of BL mode will change to "USB" now and then just the double click on the RUUwrapper. it should work!

Success and failure.
It recognised the device and it started updating. It then failed and said "Error 294: Invalid Vender ID"
Could it be because my phone is the o2 UK model? Could I just use an older o2 UK RUU to downgrade?

Goldcard/ Y cable method, that will work for sure. You can either make the Y cable or purchase one online from like Amazon.

Try switching the connections of the card reader and the phone on the Y cable.
Mine was doing the same thing yesterday when I downgraded my replacement phone. I was trying it with a SD card reader and a 8gb flash drive (I even partitioned it down to 1gb) and both of them were going through the loop from "Enter USB host mode, to Loading, then to bootloader mode."
So I went and bought a SanDisk 5 in 1 SD card reader and as soon as I hooked it up everything worked and updated the device.
You might want to try a different card reader and see if that works.

As far as I know, if you trash the ROM the device is screwed.
no fix? that means i need to go throughu insurance?
hmmm, sounds like your phone might be bricked! how about if you sale it to me half the price you got it for, then I'll take it and throw hardspl on it right before flashing a stock rom ;0)
Now it's in bootloader mode you can load a new ROM.... When you plug the cable in the PC does it say 'USB' on the bootloader screen? If so then you can use RUU to flash a new ROM. But from what you're saying you get an error when you try and do that? Hmm.
This is why I keep DIAMIMG.nbh on the 4GB just in case things like this happen then you can restore from that.
Maybe take it to a mobile phone repairer and see if they can force flash an image. I've had that done with many Nokia's but I don't know it that's possible with a WinMo device..
If you've already HardSPL'd your device then you have voided the warranty. I guess as you said insurance may be your best bet. Good luck

You don't need activesync to flash a ROM when the device is in bootloader. The RUU should detect that the device is attached.

The RUU would stop (most likely before flashing started) and it would report a specific 3-digit error code.
i hope i dont get error 262 like i did when trying to unlock.
will report back later when i get home
Take a look here also. If error 262 is from RUU, that is recoverable.

yup got error 262 but i tried this and it didn't work
-> ERROR [262] : UPDATE ERROR
This error occurs during the CE ROM code upgrade process.
Solution: If this happens, you can just soft-reset the device and run RUU again. The update process will then continue.
Note: At this stage, the Wince is destroyed; instead, it is in upgrade mode.
the bootloader shows this
it brings me here
security unlock
DIAM500
SPL-0.57.0000
MicroP-Diam (LES) vB
PSQC Diam STAGE_EVT V20
it says this in the middle of the screen
upgrade rom code error
please try again
but when i try again i get error 262. active sync doesn't detect the device either
anyone got any idea? thanks
bump.... i keep getting errror 262 on flash
Are you trying to flash a ROM or SPL??? You should be flashing the unsigned-HardSPL before trying to flash a ROM.

Touch pro2 stuck at tricolor bootloader screen

OK i tried getting help at the hardspl thread but just getting a generic answer.
I was wondering if there is anyone who can point me in the right direction or hold my hand so to say with step by step instruction on possibly fixing the problem i currently have.
here is what i had performed to get to where i am at right now.
I had my phone hardspl. been flashing different roms then stayed with one. then today my phone wasnt able to activesync and the usb wasnt being recognized so i wasnt able to activesync, or use phone as a disk drive or internet sharing but the phone would still charge through usb. i called tmobile they are sending me a phone ill get it in about a week in the meantime i need to make this one back to stock.
So i downloaded and flashed the tmobile stock rom which i found here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550975 after that was installed.
I then downloaded the tmobile splash screen which was provided in a link found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4592520&postcount=163
i then downgraded the radio.
after doing all that all what was left was to change the hardspl to relock to spl. well being that my usbport was not being detected by computer to use activesync being that your phone needs to be synced in order to use the rhodiumsplrelocker.exe program. so i ran the program and when the files showed up from the program i took the RUU_signed.nbh file and moved it into another folder and renamed it to rhodimg.nbh and placed on my memory card thinking this would relock the phone using the sd card loader method..
I ran it and then the phone frooze. it rebooted and when it did this is what shows up
When i try to put the stock rom image file back on my memory card as i was told to do... after the first screen with the tricolor it then goes into a second screen with the words loading and thats it...i let it run like this for 20minutes and there was no change. heres what that screen looks like
is there anyone who may help me i would appreciate it greatly. ill be willing to make a donation to you for a solution that really works.
Connect to your device via MTTY (delete the NBH on your SD for good measure), and in the MTTY terminal, simply type this command:
Code:
[FONT=Courier New][B]set 16 0[/B][/FONT]
After that, it should boot back to Windows Mobile just fine. Good luck

can you send me the mtty program or send me a link or direct me to where i can get this mtty program much appreciated
edit: i tried mtty program and its not working. the program needs to access the usb port on phone. the first problem i was having was that the computer was no longer to read the usb port on phone due to a problem with the usb hardware. so any fix that may require a usb to computer connection may not work...if theres a way to put a file on the memory card that would work to fix or to have it boot to windows without going into the loader all the time that would help.
I just looked at the pictures in the first post, and that SPL is the shipping SPL, and not HardSPL. Therefore, it doesn't matter if the phone boots or not, since you've made everything stock, and they have nothing on you. You can just say that your phone started doing this and you don't know why, and if you play dumb, they'll have no reason to suspect otherwise.
you need to find a computer with a working usb port. Mtty is your best way out of this. It's a pretty simple problem that you have actually. mtty can be quirky so don't give up!

I have the same problem and the issue isn't our computer is the actual MINI USB port on the phone that no longer works
Um, i hate to tell you, but that same thing happened to me. I got it all back to stock, called HTC , sent it in for repair, they kept it for 45 freeking days. I just got it back. Cost $20.
Good luck. I tried everything before sending it in. Nothing worked.
Im just wondering if sending it to T-mobile that way would cause a charge to me
usb not working
ok this is for everyone who has tried to help and i really do appreciate it. but one thing people seem to keep forgetting about is you have to remember the USB PORT on the phone has MALFUNCTIONED meaning it doesnt work anymore. So for those of you who have come up with try using MTTY program...well the thing is you need to have a working USB in order for that to even work. so as i have mentioned before is there any program out there that would help by trying some rebooting program you can install on the memory card or what would really help is if the people who made the hardspl and the splrelocker would make a splrelocker program that can all be run off of the memory card with no need for the USB port because if and when that usb port is no longer working and you need to return for warranty reasons then it would be a great help being you can still relock the spl even with a non working usb port.
ok, so everybody started out not being able to activesync due to a malfunctioning mini-USB port.
If this was the case, how was anyone able to downgrade the spl in preparation for a return.... which normally requires a working MiniUSB connection?
Are you absolutely sure this isn't the (more common) PnP-doesn't-recognize-the-port issue?

when i first received the phone ... yes the usb port was functioning well and i was able to hardspl my phone... and everytime i would flash a rom i would put the rhodimg.nbh file on the root of my memory card and do the hold volume button down and hit the reset button allowing me to boot to the tricolor screen without the need for activesync or usb to flash a rom. during the use and life of my phone the usb port malfunctioned maybe from wear and tear who knows...so even with the usb dying im still able to flash roms to my phone through the memory card which i could use a memory card reader to put the rhodimg.nbh file onto and then put memory card into phone and reboot the phone while holding down the voldown button still letting me access the bootloader screen without the need for usb. so my thing is if a problem develops during this process how do you fix it when the usb no longer works.
So your SPL isn't downgraded then? That would make sense given the problem you cite. I'm hoping you say that it is because that means there's still hope b/c I don't know of a way to do the downgrade from SD. The only way you can communicate with the BL is through the USB port afaik.

Correct me if im wrong, the screen where he is stuck (See screenshot post #1), looks like original SPL? If so, how can T-Mobile even notice it has been reflashed? What im trying to say is, if he just play dumb, he should get warrantee just fine, since it looks all original to me.
good point... looks like yours is one option. Still perplexing how the downgrade could have occurred with a bad miniUSB port... There are some real quirks getting mtty to connect. Some of them had to do with getting USB active on the BL screen... I haven't used the utility since I had my TyTN in the days before soft/hardSPL however.

ok, well, do you have a GSM tp2? or a CDMA/GSM one? because it says RHOD500 modelid on the screen but I'm not convinced that you actually have a CDMA worldphone...
if you are not sure, then tell me what carrier the device is from, that'll give me a hint if it's GSM or CDMA/GSM.

then i extracted RUU_Signed.nbh from a Pre-NoDo Shipped ROM and renamed it to SCHUIMG.NBH(only for htc hd7) and copied it to a 8g flashdrive other sizes biger than 1g will work, i allready prepared the file for you guys so you dont have to look for the entire rom here it is its in two parts because of file limitations of mediafire-link part1: http://rapidshare.com/files/2782802394/SCHUIMG.part1.rar
link part2:http://rapidshare.com/files/3550720848/SCHUIMG.part2.rar
So the steps:
important HD7 must be at least 50% battery powered
1- make y-cable like picture
2-copy SCHUIMG.NBH to flashdrive
3-Plug the male conector in to computer
4- plug flash drive in female conector
5-boot your HD7 in USB Loader Mode, very important not in Bootloader!
to do that hold down Power, Volume Down, and Camera button! all at the same time.
6- With the cable provided with your HD7 conect your phone to the other end of the female conector
7-Now you Hd7 start to recognize the file SCHUIMG.NBH and the process begins , your phone will start reboot several times until it finishes.
8- Put your phone in Bootloader mode hold power and volume down
Then you can install a shiped rom provided here: part1:http://rapidshare.com/files/891722600/RUU_Schubert_HTC_Europe_1.60.401.01_Radio_5.52.09.16_22.33a.50.10_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.part1.rar part2:http://rapidshare.com/files/390128157/RUU_Schubert_HTC_Europe_1.60.401.01_Radio_5.52.09.16_22.33a.50.10_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.part2.rar
9-Put your phone in Bootloader mode hold power and volume down,
conect to your computer
and then useHSPL / RSPL for HTC WP7 First Generation provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16189671&postcount=1
And now you are free to install any rom you want on your HD7 !
It worked for me very well!
Thanks to sh4d0w86 , Cotulla and viperbjk

TNX ruyzalim,

Hey buddy! Just wanted to make sure that your in USB host mode and not in bootloader mode. Volume down + press the camera button together and power on the device. The screen will show an image of the device hooked to a computer.
Also if your SD card doesn't have the goldcard code installed on it, you'll get the message "Not allow".
Does anyone know where i can buy one of these wires from, I have tried making my own but it didn't work sadly :/

Yeah you can buy one from Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0041CFFBM/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?qid=1334327842&ref_=sr_1_17&sr=8-17
Alot of times home made Y cables don't work because they are too long in length and that causes a problem with transferring the data. So I would try and shorten the cables on yours first and also make sure you have everything connected to the right ends and then try it again.

Take a look at Shadows tutorial, it explains the process and steps. Since your bootloader is 5.xxx you will have to either use the goldcard/Ycable method to downgrade your OSPL from 5.xxx to under 3.xxx to install RSPL/HSPL and then you can flash a custom rom of your choice.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I made my cable and I got my phone to the grey screen that says "Enter USB Host Mode. .", and my flash drive lights up but the phone doesn't do anything. I've also tried hooking everything up with my phone on the screen with the picture of a phone plugging into a computer, and still nothing happens.
What am I missing here?

Try this...these are some common problems with getting stuck in USB host mode:
Sometimes if the Y cable is too long in length it won't work properly in transferring the data.
There are 2 .nhb files, so make sure your downloading the correct .nbh file (ruu_signed.nbh) and rename the ruu_signed.nbh to SCHUIMG.nbh Has to be capitalized letters when renaming the file.
Make sure the correct ends are plugged in where they should be.
Sometimes the camera button will get stuck in and prevent the device from flashing correctly.
Make sure the SD card is wiped clean and place the file inside the SD card and patch it with the goldcard tool.
Try a different flash drive/card reader.

That's usually the most common problem too... A card reader and small SD card like a 1gb to 4gb work the best, you can use larger SD cards but you should partition it and needs to be formatted to FAT32

It should work just fine! Try it out... Sometimes you have to switch around the connections on the female ends of the cable, between the SD card reader and the power supply to see what one sends and which one receives data and it should work perfectly.

Chevron Unlock will look work with pre-Mango. you will need to use Goldcard method to downgrade. I suggest just flashing a Custom ROM, you will get more features besides adding a few apps. see tutorial I wrote, link in my signature.

What errors or problems did you have when trying the goldcard method?
Since you have an HTC Asia WWE operator device, the SLSPL method by Ansar will not work for you.
The only other way for you to downgrade 5.xxx would be the Zubair - Pre-Mango Zune restore point method. Requires you to have a Pre-Mango restore point through Zune, meaning that you have updated the device from a Pre-Mango state to Mango and still have the computer that you did it on. If you use this method make sure to read the directions carefully... The devices SPL will not be downgraded when you revert back to Pre-Mango state, it changes the SPL when you re-update the device through Zune again and the key part is that the device will reboot twice during the update once to change the SPL to 4.xxx and once to actually install Mango and at this point you have to stop the update process and unplug the device before it installs the 3 update which is the HTC firmware update and if that update is installed the devices SPL will be upgraded to 5.xxx again and you will be stuck in the same position.

Usually if the device hangs in "USB host mode" its due too -
1. The SD card reader... Try a different card reader. This is the most common problem and if your card reader uses a USB cable (like a printer style USB cable) try a different cable.
2. Make sure the only file on the SD card is the SCHUIMG.nbh ( has to be capitalized when renaming the ruu_signed.nbh)
3. The camera button can get stuck pushed in and prevent the device from flashig
4. Try switching around the Y cable connections.
5. If you make the Y cable to long in length it can cause a problem with trying to read the file.
Also when the device gets stuck in "Enter USB host mode or Loading" you have to pull the battery and re-enter USB host mode to try and start the flash process again.
Try these and let me know how it goes.

[Q] HTC HD7 Unlock and Install Custom ROMS help?!

Truly i'm a complete NOOB at rooting and installing custom roms. The HD7 has been a pain in the A$$ to root, let alone just downgrade the boot loader. If anyone could help at all it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Bobsteriffic and welcome to XDA!
I'd be more than happy to help you unlock your device and flash a custom rom.
First post your devices info. Go to - Settings - About - More, and post the devices Bootloader version and Firmware Revision Number.
More than likely if the device is up to date then it's bootloader version is 5.xxx and the easiest method to downgrade the bootloader is the goldcard method.
Thanks for the quick reply!
Heres the specs:
OS version:7.10.8107.79
Firmware revision number: 2250.21.51202.531
Hardware revision number: 0002
Radio software version: 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
Bootloader version: 5.12.2250.0(135916)
Chip SOC version: 2.2.5.0
Hopefully this helps
Ok... You have a T-Mobile HD7 and up to date with 5.xxx bootloader.
The only methods you can use to downgrade 5.xxx are -
Goldcard method - Requires a Y cable, (either homemade or purchased online) a SD card reader, 1gb - 2gb SD card and you need to download a Pre-NoDo or NoDo rom specific for the device, the goldcard tool and the goldcard image.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597837
Zune restore point method - Restore the device to a Pre - Mango version through Zune. Meaning that you updated the device from a Pre-Mango state to Mango using Zune and still have the PC that you used to do it on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362194
Just follow Shadow's step by step tutorial on downgrading SPL, installing XSPL and flashing a custom rom. It has all the links for the above methods, and Pre-NoDo/NoDo roms and everything that you'll need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295068
These are the steps -
1. Downgrade devices SPL to at or below 3.xxx (which is required to install XSPL)
2. Install XSPL = RSPL/HSPL (which is required to install a custom rom)
3. Flash a custom rom of your choice
If you have any problems or questions just let me know!
Okay so i've seen the Y-Cable method and i'm very reluctant to do it as i'm not very good with physical hacks such as that. And as far as the "Zune Backup" method goes, if I don't have a Restore.dat file, is there any way I could just download one from somewhere and use that?
And also, if you could check out this method real quick and give your opinion, it would be much appreciated: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_HD7/Radios
You would install the radios and that would downgrade the bootloader.
Thanks for all the help!
Well to basically answer your questions...
Using a different devices restore files won't work. Each devices has its own set of keys and would give an error while trying to restore.
The radio rom would work on a device that's bootloader version is 4.xxx or lower but not on a 5.xxx bootloader.
As far as the goldcard method goes, it's actually really easy. You can even buy a Y cable from Amazon really cheap. The process for using the goldcard method is much simpler than it sounds and I can walk you through the whole process if you want.
Yea I looked into the goldcard method and it does seem fairly easy. Gonna check around the house to see if I already have a Y-Cable. If not then i'll buy one on amazon
If you have the female USB cables and decide to make a Y cable, take a look at this thread it has a good pic of how to connect them together.

Ok, yeah that's easy..
One female USB end you use to connect the devices charging cable from the device to the Y cable.
The other female USB end you use to connect the SD card reader to the Y cable.
The male USB end you use to connect to a power source. Either the devices wall charger adapter or into a PC.
That's the basic idea, but depends on the Y cable setup that you have.
Take a look at these -

Yeah buddy... Those should work perfect!
The Y cable will be nice with the micro USB connector for the phone, so you don't have to use the charging cable because sometimes if the cables are too long in length they can cause a problem with transferring the data.
Exactly what I was thinking. So now that I have the cables ordered and on their way, do you think with this whole method that I would be able to flash the "Dynamics 2.0 WP7.8" rom?
Located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523991
Absolutely...That's a great rom and I guarantee that you'll love the new 7.8 start screen with customizable tiles, it's awesome!
If you haven't already get the necessary downloads that you need -
1. Goldcard tool
2. Goldcard image
Both from here -

3. Pre-NoDo/Nodo rom - I would recommend this rom. I've found that with my T-Mobile HD7 that the radio included in this rom gives me a better signal and somewhat of a better battery life. (even over the most current and up to date 5.71 radio.

Download this rom and extract it (use a program like 7zip, not the Windows zip program) to a new folder (name it like T-Mobile 3.1 rom) on your desktop. Remove the Ruu_signed.nbh file from the rom and put it in a new folder (name it like SCHUIMG.nbh) on the desktop. Right click on the ruu_sighned.nbh file and click "rename", rename the ruu_signed.nbh file to SCHUIMG.nbh (has to be capitalized when renaming)
Put the SD card in the card reader and connect it to the PC, the SD card needs to be formatted to FAT32. Then put the SCHUIMG.nbh file on to the SD card. Click on and run the goldcard tool, click on the "Load GoldCard.img" and select the goldcard.img, then Press "Patch MMC" button.
The SD card will now be a goldcard and will be ready to be connected to the Y cable.
Once the whole downgrade process is done and you ready to flash the custom rom, you also need to connect the device to your PC while it's in bootloader mode. This will install the Qualcomm drivers and allow for the connection/communication from the device to the PC when installing the custom rom.... Otherwise you'll get a error connection 260.
