My GPS can NEVER pick up any signal whatsoever.. details inside.. - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It used to work fine, until I installed a cracked version of iGO8. (But I'm not sure if this is why GPS doesnt work anymore).
Heres the details:
I Use Com4 4800
Quick GPS downloaded to latest each time
Tested in clear sky days (No clouds at all)
Used google maps, garmin XT (seeking GPS satellites (0)
HSDPA, 3G constantly 3-5 bars
Each time, they would try to track down a satellite, but never works. Not even 1. However, Built in gpS does work as gogle maps can track me down still. So its got to do with my GPS communicating with the Sattelites..something went wrong here (My assumption)
Tried for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, nothing.
So, I rang Xperia centre, andthey said its issues with my network connecting to GPS.
Whats this mean? Will uprading my radio to latest make my GPS work again? or WORSE??

Upgrading radio could help. Maybe the thing you installed edited the radio somehow?

if you BOUGHT it you would have customer support.
The problem with cracked software is its not very trustworthy. Plus your phone might not be supported by the original software. do you have the option to uninstall the cracked igo software? Do you get a lock when you use google maps? if you do then its just igo, if not its probrobly stuffing up your radio. If you cant uninstall it or you can and theres no improvement then its either try another radio or hard reset.
Maybe you should BUY your software next time and not have this problem.

tomtom works great, Ndrive works good too.

Try this...
try to delete the file of the quick gps software. I had a similar problem and I fixed with that.
you can find this file in "windows" and "temp" folders. the file is called "xtra.bin" in both folders. delete the files and try again.
in my case my xperia didn't find satellites and got frezze after a few minutes. after delete the files my xperia works fine again.

GPS don't work

heelp... what should I do...
Couple days ago TomTom trial and Google Map found gps device nicely and everything seems to be ok. However now when I am trying to start these sw:s they both are saying that they can't find gps device. What should I do about this?
When you start the apps, does the orange light on the right of the internal speaker start flashing?
If it does, then the GPS is actually starting but not getting a fix probably.
If it doesn't then have you mucked around with your "external gps settings" which should be left set to com4 and 4800
Or try this: http://www.expansys.nl/ft.aspx?k=100176
Thx for your answers...
when I tried start tomtom it will find gps-receiver & satellites and if immediatly after that I start Google Map sw it find gps also...
It seems that this happens because of delaying to find satellites... and timelimit at GM is too short... any way solve that problem because it is stupid that I have to start every time tomtom first
which GM version are you using? maybe you should try to download the latest version. The version 1.2.0.18 seems to take a longer time before it times out.
I've downloaded version 1.2.0.18 from the webpage http://www.google.com/gmm/index.html.
what version you suggested? And if that is different, where I could get it?
Or is it possible to use some light software first lock satellites and then start GM? if this is possible what "locking sw:s" you suggest?
Its a well known problem that Google Maps times out before getting a fix on a "cold start" of the GPS.
I am guessing that if enough people let them know, they will either work out how to get it to respond quicker or to increase the time out.
I've downloaded sw called TGPS which I use locked satellites... Now it seems that this is working well...
thx anyway to all.

I had to return my phone for warranty repair but I think the latest version of GMM fixes the timeout problem. Last night I downloaded it to a friend's new ATT Tilt. The GPS took about 1.5min to get a fix and GMM didn't show any errors.
Where I can get this TPGS software???
Sorry not mentioned that before...
http://www.turboirc.com/ppc/
Thanks for the info
I downloaded the software, seems working but google maps is not working at all. What tricks have you done to make google maps work???
Zero, nada....
Just first locking gps with TGPS and then (TGPS background) I start GM... that's it.
btw. in the GM I am using automatic configuration for GPS.
If you setup everything correctly, sometimes its the location where you are at. Whenever I'm in my car, it always works. When I'm in a building, chances are, it doesn't work, even by a window.
So don't think its the phone. Test it outside first and then see if it really is the phone.
There is no need to download additional software to kickstart the Kaiser gps. Open the Camera app and switch to GPS Photo mode. Wait for a fix and then exit and start up Google Maps.
I tested the GPS outside and works fine with TOMTOM and TPGS but still google maps give me errors. When I start TPGS The software gets a signal really fast.
But when I switch to google maps I got ( Error: ConnectError [183]) and I still running TPGS in the background...
I'm using google maps version: 1.2.0.17
And another thing: This GPS photo where I can get it?? Because I think I dont have it.... my kaiser I bought it in Denmark...
Thanks for the help you people rock....
GPS Photo is enabled by a registry change -- use your favorite registry editor to set HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P9\Enable to the DWORD value 1. It'll then show up as a camera mode when you click the left/right arrows in the upper left corner of the camera display.
Thanks waygeek it worked....
Lets see if this google maps thing works with GPS photo
By the way I want to check out the version of google maps that you guys have??
I'm using google maps version: 1.2.0.17
Once again thank you all...
No luck with GPS photo our TGPS with Google maps.
The GPS is working perfectly
thomassster : You said that when you drive in your car Google maps works..
Do you use GPRS or 3G to connect to google maps and after that you use the GPS??? or you just use the GPS??
Because What I been experienced is if I'm outside then I use my GPRS connection then the GPS and google maps tell me Where I'm.. But If I dont use any connection and switch to the GPS, google maps die...
Thanks for the help

GPS Not functioning

I screwed my Kaiser gps by trying to use map4pda which automatically changed the port in settings for gps. What can I do? Gps not working anymore, even after putting back the old settings and doing softresets, even took out the battery for a while
Not a single program can find my inbuilt gps now
I do not want to do a hard reset,I have tooo many progs and no backup
Please help
I am afraid to use any other gps program(even after a hard reset) because this could ruin my gps settings
I read somewhere that gps applet is misconfigured(from factory)..and even a slight modification to it,could lead to my gps not functioning till a hard-reset.
Also it's not normal that a program can modify the gps'settings by itself
I have bad news for you, but at least it confirms that Map4PDA is a bad program. I used to love the program. It worked awesome on my 8525. You can have it use MSN, Yahoo or Google Maps.
I installed it on my Tilt and at first I didn't realize that it was the culprit. Then I hard reset and installed only that program and a few others to test GPS. Once I ran Map4PDA, GPS no workie. Hard reset again.
I have not run it since my last hard reset and my GPS still works perfect....and I have used many, many different GPS programs.
So with all that said, I'm afraid a hard reset is your only option. I am not the only one that got bit by this. I posted in another thread here and a few others had the same results as me.

Thank you for the info..
Are you sure this is the only gps program that messes up the gps?
Did you test Igo,GpsTuner,GpsGate,Pathaway professional,GeoScout??
But Gloposis,BeeLine gps??
Any other incompatibilities?
Thx
I haven't tested all of those. Here's what I have on my phone right now:
FFF (finger friendly friends)
Google Maps
Live Search
GPS test
GPS Utilities
GPS viewer
GPSinfo
Navigator II
TomTom 6
TrackMe
Virtual Earth
VisualGPSce
I think the other ones will be safe. Map4PDA is the only one I've heard of that kills the Kaiser GPS.
A hard reset is your only option and shouldnt be a nightmare.
Work out what apps you want, check you have the cabs etc, sync your device with your pc and away you go.
I keep all my favourite apps cabs on my storage card so that I could hard reset even if away from my laptop (but I do have an exchange server so setting up sync remotely is also easy).
Reinstalling 60 applications IS very time-consuming,let alone the time to configure them and the OS just the way I like them.
But giving that I do not have any other chance,I'll do it
My only concern is that I'll install other application which will kill again my gps and I have to take all from the beggining. I come from an Eten X500 and this was never happened to me.There , NO application could change some system settings..

I too noticed that using different GPS software tends to screw up something on my Tilt. I've used Google Maps and MS Live Search and these tend to screw things up to the point that the GPS is useless. I also have Copilot Live 7 installed and this program has the ability to reset the GPS on my device.
For those not familiar with Copilot, when you go to the Settings panel in Copilot and choose Reset GPS, it asks you to enter a city within 100 miles of your current location in order to reset your GPS properly. If someone could develop an app to replicate this... This would be a great standalone app for all Tilt & variant owners.
But if the gps is already dead, how will Copilot know which city is in 100 miles radius ??it cannot tell the current location, beacuse it cannot get a fix from sattelites...so one cannot do a reset to the gps..
what about a backup? make a backup before you install an app that you don't know if it works or not, install/run app, if all is good, no worries. if all is bad, restore from backup.
the Tilt ROM comes with sprite backup and htc backup is flating around this forum...

Not sure how this works, but I've been able to get my GPS working again every time with this feature.
If entering a location with Copilot fixes your GPS, then it wasnt broken to begin with. Just because Google Maps cant get a fix, doesnt mean that your GPS isnt working (all it means is that you need to download the new google maps which is a lot better).
One needs to think about such problems logically. When you open a GPS enabled APP and try to get a fix, does the orange GPS light flash on the device. If it does, then your gps is working with your device. If it then fails to get a fix it is because it cannot see the satellites. Make sure you are giving it a clean line of sight to the sky (ideally to the south if you live in UK).
If the orange light doesn't come on then your com port settings are wrong and its hard reset time.
Oh and if your GPS is working but seems to take a long time to get a fix, then use QUICKGPS to give it a prod.
In the external GPS settings programs tab set to 4800, in the hardware tab gps hardware port select none, baud rate should be at 4800. In te access tab tick manage gps automatically.
Load the TomTom app that comes with the Kaiser or download it from here. go to config on the gps settings within TomTom and it will right itself
Make a backup of the registry and put is back in this situations, easy and fast when you try different programs.
Btw Igo works fine also Nusa maps (Indonesia), Map King pro and Papa Go..

That's not true in every circumstance. Like the OP, I installed Map4PDA. When you run the program, it searches for the GPS (you can't specify what COM port to use manually) and in my case, hangs on COM3 for whatever reason. I let it sit for over an hour and ended up doing a soft reset because the program was unresponsive.
After that, my GPS would not work in ANY program that it worked in previously. I checked and double-checked my settings to no avail. I posted here and on MoDaCo and got some good advice but in the end, only a hard reset fixed it. Yes, the GPS light would blink but my Tilt would run very, very slowly and would never get a fix. That QuickGPS program would error out every time I ran it. I don't know what Map4PDA did, but it hosed my GPS and it looks like the OP got bit too.
Since my last hard reset, I have installed tons of GPS enabled programs and they all work just fine. I also have never run QuickGPS and I can get a fix within 10 seconds in any program.
I know it's not logical, but that is what worked for me.
EDIT: I don't advocate the spreading of paid for s/w, but I would be curious to see if your CoPilot program would successfully reset the OP's GPS.
If a gps program asks for manual configuration of hardware gps port and the baudrate, what should I input? Like Igo for ex....or GpsTuner...

COM4, 4800 baud
this com 4 is a program port,it's not the harware gps (native) port..
can we find out which port number is the default(hardware)?
But thnks anyway for the answers
COM4 is what works. Yes, technically, it's a soft port, but it has worked with every GPS enabled program I've tried (except for Map4PDA but that is another story).
The neato thing about that is that it allows more than one program to access the GPS at the same time. If you go directly to the hardware, you lose that functionality.

I use GpsGate anyway,so using multiple gps programs at once isn't a problem for me,BUT because I cannot use hardware port, we are stucked with 4800 baudrate, which is a limitation only with soft multiplexer(built in the OS)

How to Test Xperia GPS?

Hi,
I bought my Xperia 1 day ago, it's really good device. But I'm having some problems with GPS. Google maps starts to scanning for satellites for ages and never stops. I also tried the "Chartcross Gps Test" program and it finds the gps but it's always on "GPS Starting up" status.
Does anybody nows how to test it ? Or if there is something that i have to enable first? (all the configs are default - like in a hard reset)
It should work straight out the box. Try the quick GPS download in the Programs>tools folder. Downloads the locations of the satalites for the next week to the phone. Since using this, tomtom7 can find my loction in seconds (literrally)
Have you been trying it inside a building? In that case it won't work. I had the same thing with the GPS. In a building there is no connection to satelites, works perfectly though outside and from within a car.
Tomorrow I try google maps.
However I use tomtom. Befor all download effimeral with quick gps.
First of Xperia I have a Polaris. Xperia gps is much better than polaris. And polaris has a very good gps....
Tomtom7
Where did u get the Tomtom7 software for the xperia. A friend of my using his tomtom device and it works really fine! So on my X1 it would be really great if i can use it too!
I don't rememder now, but you can use Diamond tt7. It work fine.
ah thank you! but i can't find the file. could you post me the link for download pls
To test GPS use GPS Test from ChartCross. It's a great, free utility.
http://www.chartcross.co.uk/products/WM00002_details.asp
thank you! ....
Now it's working fine. I have to test it with tomtom later, but with google maps is Ok now. I followed buckle247 and Dryw Filtiarn tips. Now it finds the satellites very quick.
Just one question, google maps requires internet connection and how about TomTom?
One thing that i noticed is that the GPS sometimes doesn't "turn on", because either Chartcross or GoogleMaps can't find the GPS device, however if i turn off and turn on Xperia it finds. Is it normal?
kotarou TomTom doesn't need to run over GPRS as the maps are all stored on the Memory Card, however if you subscribe to traffic data then that will need a GPRS connection.
Also every so often I get the "No GPS Device" sometimes just leaving the phone for a minute makes it appear, other times a soft reset.
Cannot install GpsTest
Hi, I tried to install GpsTest on Windows Vista, but it doesn't work, since GpsTest installer requires ActiveSync. But Activesync refuses to install on Windows Vista, because there is another SmartPhone software.
Does anyone know another versione of GpsTest, compatible with Vista, or a version installable directly on the X1?
Thanx!

If your 3G data is switched off, then you won't be charged for anything. GPS won't charge you as it is tracking signals from satellites, much like a Sat Nav.

xperia X1 freeze when use GPS

Xperia X1 freeze. After 6 months I have problem with my xperia and gps. When I try to use internal GPS (whenever software), display freeze and I have to replace batery. I have tryied to flash another ROM, it works few hours and now I have same problem. Any ideas?
Hi,ok let´s see, like you ive had the same problem, just when i was using any gps navigator the phone suddendly stopped and that was sucking me a lot so after that i started to think what could be the problem, and at the end after a lot of time i found where was the problem and what was the solution. To find the solution i decided to hard reset the new rom with which all my gps problems started, and following the instalation steps of all programs and configurations i found the problem and this was related with the quick gps, before using this program to upgrade my gps location my mobile was runing tomtom and others without freezing, but after upgrade the gps location with the quick gps my mobile started to freeze. So this is the problem, just do this try to hard-reset and install eveything but dont, i repeat dont !!use the quick gps or this will freeze your phone again. Following this step your phone will run the gps navigators without the freeze problem
Then men after this try to do this and let me know (PLEAE) if your problem still remain ok? see u and hope you can solve this problem like me.
I too have just started having GPS problems as listed above!
The problem seems to be Quickgps...as soon as u run the quickgps update(which you may have on autodownload) Tomtom crashes and you have to reboot the phone...
I have reinstalled a different rom since and still have the same problem!
i dont know if there is a cache for this program that can be cleared or something other than reflashing the device
As the days go on and the 7 day update starts running out im guessing more people will start having the same problems!mine happened 28/10/09 evening time!
Same problem: freezing XPERIA when using GPS!
Yesterday I connected my X1 to the PC and got the latest Quick GPS update. Today I'll need to use my gps for a trip... Wanted to prepare the navigator and got the same problem like you guys.
Probably something wrong with the last update since I have not installed anything nor updated the firmware.
Is there any way to get any older version of the quick gps? Before after each 7 days period, it was possible still to use the GPS. Even though it was much slower but in the end it always works before updating... Will a hard reset give me an old version of Quick GPS?
This is so annoying at this moment. Hope somebody find a solution fast.
Hi all,
Got the very same problem yesterday.
I tought the GPS HW had gone. I have uninstalled the Route 66 SW, but there are some files that still lay in the phone.
Then re-install everything from scracth, but problem remains. Now i know i a GPS. Could be worse if was a HW problem in the phone.
Possible solution
Hi
I have maybe same problem with other phone (HTC Rose). If any application try to connect to GPS, phone freezes. After Hard Reset it was OK, but only until I use QuickGPS. Then it again freeze whole mobile after use GPS application.
My temporary solution:
1.
Erase QuickGPS data. Simply delete 2 files: Temp\xtra.bin and Windows\xtra.bin
2.
Soft Reset phone.
Try it, and let me know.
working so far...
Thank you motaba.
I did what you proposed and erased the files. It worked actually.
I have been running my gps now for some minutes and it did not freeze. It found the signal and started to navigate without freezing.
So at first glance it seems to work. I will try it further and tell you all about further information.
but how can the gps work so fast and well without these quickgps files? are they totally redundant?
Greetings
Thanks a lot motaba.
Works for me as well.
As yes, it got the location pretty fast without the "A GPS mambojambo"
I was gettin 8-9 statelites.
P.S: Anyone can tell me were to get TomTom 7 for X1 ? Route 66 is pretty anoying some times....
X1 GPS
After deleting the fails xtra.bin my gps start to work for now, but I want to ask do I have to use quickGPS update if I update the gps from there the problem will be start again
Yes delete xtra.bin helps!!!
Does anyone has older version of quick gps. I still want to use quick gps, becasus waiting for gps to fix is annoying. thanks
Hi all,
After deleting the xtra files and confirm that works i went out, and during the driving i used the GPS.
Even went going out of the car and switching GPS programm off, as soon as i got back into the car and switch programm on, the GPS location came so quick that was unbeleivable. Only time to switch it on , put it into the older start the car and when i look into it, was already navigating.
So my advice is FORGET about Quick GPS.
I think ESA as lunched a new GPS satellite for the European system, I wonder if has anything to do with with it. ??? Anyway it's great !!!
No, ESA satellites are not primary GPS satellites. They provide WAAS/EGNOS correction info only. AFAIK Xperia does not support correction, so it does not work with these satellites at all.
The problem could be with QuickGPS data. Many users started to have the problem at the same time. It seems xperia uses QuickGPS if they are available. So any corruption on QuickGPS side makes GPS unusable.
Sometimes just forced QuickGPS reload helps .. but sometimes not, and that's when the trick with xtra.bin comes handy.
Thank you all in this awesome forum. Deleting the xtra.bin files solved the problem for me. Even the time to log the gps position seems not really to be slower in my case
Hi Dr Sid
Thanks for the explanation.
My point was that the xtra.bin removal works, and after i did that the GPS position was found very very quickly without starting Quick GPS.
I wonder why because, before it would take 10 minutes or more, if quick GPS was not used.
Summer time change?
Hi
I was wondering what is wrong with xtra.bin. It is downloaded from web server xtra1.gpsonextra.net or simmilar.
In my country (Slovakia) at 24-25.10. there was time change from summer time CEST (GMT+2) to CET (GMT+1). Maybe it is some dependance between change of time and GPS problem.
Wiki says same time change is all over Europe.
All of you with same problem, please check registry, what servers are set in QuickGPS. My phone is HTC, so registry are there:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\QuickGPS\0\0]
"port"=dword:00000050
"IP"="xtra1.gpsonextra.net"
THANKYOU SO MUCH!!
This has been driving me crazy!! I have only just learned to put ROM's on my phone and this is when the problems started, so I suspected the ROM's was causing the problem.
Deleted the 2 files and now my GPS works perfectly.
Excellent fix, saved me so much time.
THANKS THANKS THANKS !!!!!!
Works for me too (Buenos Aires - Argentina).

It's very probable that this is the problem, since I have it since a few days also. But it's strange, last time change I had no problems with it.
hehe, a bit slow to find this thread
yep the quickgps data is corrupt somehow.
took me a lot of reboots to find this out.
A-GPS still works just try running google maps with GPS turned OFF!! you get a rough idea of where your are.
QuickGPS gives a weeks calcutions of predicted GPS satalite locations which can then be used to reduce the cold-boot gps startup time.
If you live near the coast at all, your GPS chip will also pickup the land based stations that broadcast static information which helps in the accuacy of location.
It is quite possible to live without QuickGPS, it just makes the startup time anything upto 2 minutes.
However, with quickgps being used for so many phones, it should not be too long before its all fixed again
It's just pity it can't be disabled by some normal means. If you delete the file, QuickGPS will load it back next week.
Also it could try to compare data from the file with data from the satellite. If different satellites are visible than those which should be visible based on the file, than GPS could realize something is wrong. It does not.

GPS Waiting for signal... stuck forever.. whats wrong?

I installed iGO8 and now all my GPS, Garmin, Google maps dont work..
It just gets stuck at waiting for GPS signal...
What's wrong? It was a clear blue sky out door when I checked this too..
Mmm sounds familiar. I upgraded my X1 firmware to the stock R3A rom (last weekend) and had this trouble with iGO8.3 (or TechrificWay which is the local Australian version) after re-installing all my apps. Had the same problems with Google Maps. Thought the GPS was crook. I was just about to do a hard reset and re-install but decided to try my old Copilot Live 7 software and everything worked fine. So un-installed iGO8.3 and re-installed and everything worked fine. If I think about it I might have un-installed iGO8 before I installed CPL7, not sure. Anyway everything has worked fine since.
Perhaps worth a try?
Same problem here on my fuze.
I had to wait many mins nearly 30mins to get the signal and if lil miss, again 30mins.
I'm using garmin and not sure about others. I tried many radio versions but still same.
BTW; sorry for posting in wrong device section but I found a nice thread here which could help.
Best Regards
I actually have 2 GPS on my sd card atm, could this be the problem?
I don't think so, unless both aren't running in background.
Checkout in FdcSoft Taskmgr if there are.....
Best Regards
Im gonna try uninstall everything, delete darmin off of sd card, and renstall igo. will post back
ok, so i uninstalled everything and was only left with google maps. no igo or garmin. so i tried too use google maps with gps, and even google maps coudnt even work. it said it cant find the gps receiver.. how can i turn it back on? could it be my reg setting, i make gprs disconnect after 2 mins?
Ive tried using manual com using baud rate 4800 and all kinds of combinations.
It would say "intializing GPS..." then it would come up with no GPS receiver found.. whats wrong??

I had a problem a few weeks ago when I couldn't get GPS to work (in Google Maps and CoPilot Live 8).
It turns out that my QuickGPS data has expired (somehow it got set to manual download). Updating the data and setting QuickGPS to update automatically made everything work normally.
In Advanced Config Tool, there is an option to turn on aGPS. I have mine set to "ON" even though I don't know if this has any effect on the X1.
Yep, Ive already turned on everything A-GPS, GPRS all settings on, tried google maps, everything again.. Nothing seems to work and it keeps coming up with No GPS receiver found although I checked if my GPS builtin is actually defective by running GPSGate2 and testing my builtin GPS. GPS said it reads ok.. so what is the problem.. its really annoying.. it ruined my anniversary 6month with my gf
^^^ You still didn't mention running QuickGPS...?
Yeah, done that too. Countless times...
