questions about the Smiley Parse (an option in Handcent SMS) - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Handcent's settings let you turn off the emoticons if you want, but I want them. Only problem is that it requires smilies to be like this (sans spaces): : - D
I, however, do smilies like this (also sans spaces): : D
So does anyone know what I would need to edit to change the strings for the smilies? Thanks

that would be a question for handcent since they wrote the apk...email the address that they give you in the application information!

It wouldn't really make much of a difference, Smileys are on your side on the application. They don't actually get sent with the Message.
Ie while you're seeing the recipient will see =] unless their messenger app supports smilies (and you have the right key combination).
I use the default messaging app but I would assume handsent have programmed their smileys so it complies with the most common key combination ie so that smileys are displayed on phones that support smileys such as Sony Ericssons (and coincidently do have key combinations like )

I´m sorry, but i do have 2 or 3 friends with Sony Ericssons, and their phones do parse smileys both ways (with or without -), but if they send one via shortlinks in their mobiles, they send it without the - (at least here in Germany, Nokia does it the same way round), so my android never displays the smiley..so i would also find it more than interesting if handset would be capable of it!

ADDRESS BOOK & OTHER PROBS FACED SINCE GETTING KAISER!-1st TIME HTC USER, NEED HELP!
Hey Everyone..
Have major probs with the following:
1) You can't have more than one mobile number per person. Some people have more than one number
2) Being able to create lists for purpose of emailing or texting a list. I mean you can create categories but you cant use the categories for anything apart from filtering your address book!???
3) Also being able to insert a number from your phonebook within a message (without sending a vcard)
4) When you slide out the keyboards, my appointments cant be seen on the screen (if held vertically you normally can, but when keyboard out you cant, well you can see the top of the text for this only) and you cant scroll down to see it neway but you should be able to see this only on the one page.
5) Speaker phone microphone doesnt work properly. People complain they cant hear me!
Anything out there to solve these?
Really appreicate your help.
1) You can't have more than one mobile number per person. Some people have more than one number
There more than 1 spot for phone #'s. work tel, mobile tel, home tel, car tel, company tel, work2 tel, home 2 tel. If someone you know has more than 7 phone #'s, and you didnt get them on the first 7 phones, they're probably dead in a gutter anyway.
2) Being able to create lists for purpose of emailing or texting a list. I mean you can create categories but you cant use the categories for anything apart from filtering your address book!???
Create lists for emailing or texting? Not sure what you mean here. But when sending email or texts, click on the "To:" and it will bring up your address book and you can add to your list of people getting it.
3) Also being able to insert a number from your phonebook within a message (without sending a vcard)
Pull up contacts. Select|copy| paste. It's just like windows XP.
4) When you slide out the keyboards, my appointments cant be seen on the screen (if held vertically you normally can, but when keyboard out you cant, well you can see the top of the text for this only) and you cant scroll down to see it neway but you should be able to see this only on the one page.

The speaker phone sucks on these phones and has since the first generation. Learn to not use it.
Hey Cheers for your reply,
in regards to your answers
1) Yep, I know you can put more than one number within that section, but lets say they have 2 mobile numbers (which many do these days to save money). Then if you put it within the home field you cant text it...?? Again anything that can be uploaded to improve this?
2) In terms of lists. On virtually every other fone..nokias, sony ericssons PDA phones, samsungs etc. You have the capability of making a list. i.e. if you are messaging the same group of people on a regular basis...e.g. for work you deal with a group of 10 contacts for a certain issue..you can select that list and it will come up with contacts in the "to" bit without selecting the contacts individually all the time..this is usually basic functionality in most phones to do this for texting and emailing..but surprised the Windows mobile doesnt have this. Its a function I have used a lot...so wondering if there is any program or something which can be uploaded to improve this?
3) With the copy and paste function tried it..and didnt work..even if it did.. it is really impractical..imagine you are writing a text to someone..Hi.blah blah blah..btw the number of ... is...and then as most phones again have..which is really basic..there should be an insert number from phonebook..but instead you have to come out of the whole text..go to the phonebook (which i have done btw)..copy the number..but guess what..as soon as I go back to the text..it doesnt allow me to paste it! Basic functionality problem there
4) Any body got a response to my number 4 above?
5) Yep thats what im trying to do
Thanks for your help..and appreciate if anybody has more suggestions for the above

You can definately text the second, third, or whatever number in your phone book. Create your message and rather than starting to type the name of your contact into the 'To' field, click in the empty 'To' field to bring up the address book. if you select a contact with more than one phone number, a box will pop up asking you which number you want to use.

You're right - it's a pretty common fuction and WM6 should have it. There may some commercial app available but I'm not aware of anything.
I normally try to get the phone number before starting the text! it's then so much easier to insert when you're writing your text. Again, it's a pity this fuctionality isn't built in.
4) When you slide out the keyboards, my appointments cant be seen on the screen (if held vertically you normally can, but when keyboard out you cant, well you can see the top of the text for this only) and you cant scroll down to see it neway but you should be able to see this only on the one page.
You mean the HTC home plugin takes up to much room? Yep, it does! But then you don't need to use it. Experiment with different home screen plugins from SPB software, such as SPB diary, SPB shell etc. You should be able to find something to suit you.
5) Speaker phone microphone doesnt work properly. People complain they cant hear me!

I agree its a little inconvenient, but if your a fast user you can easily tap the windows key then contacts then quickly locate the contact, copy the number and then paste it into the msg (by hitting start then messages or the message button on the phone itself).
# 4 You need some software like SPB Mobile Shell (search for the thread called post a picture of your today screen). Because there is no current way to decrease the size of the clock. You can disable the HTC Home plug in (clock and sms/phone/email notification icons) then the whole screen will be the bottom part, but you forego the cool weather/launcher/profiles/today plugin of HTC.
# 5 speaker phone like camera plain SUCKS!!!

okay i cant take it anymore!

i really like my eris... im a recent convert from win mo.. and there are a few things that i just cant take any more!... im sure they are able to be changed so lets see if any of you android wizz's can help me out here.
Slide to unlock: im really tired of making pocket calls from my phone unlocking itself i really like the idea of a keypad or pattern unlock that most other android operating systems have... this is my biggest problem, it really needs to be addressed. im a it professional and a fairly offensive person in my personal life the last thing i want to do is pocket call a customer while being super offensive.
Disabling htc apps: i really like handsent sms WAY MORE than htc's messaging application but i really hate getting multiple notifications that i got a text message. i just want to make it to where the htc messaging application is not running ever...
expanded speech to text: i really like the speech to text, ive seen some android os's that have the speech button on the on-screen keyboard, i have some applications that have expanded speech to text. how can i get the speech to text as a permanent option?
Slide to unlock: Settings -> Security -> Set unlock pattern
Disabling HTC messaging: Open Messaging, menu button -> settings -> Auto-retrieve off; Recieved Notification off
Speech to text options seem to be related to the keyboard, Getting a keyboard replacement that supports it should fix this issue, I hear Better Keyboard works, but I don't use it myself.
Alternately, get Swype. I spend less time typing with Swype than I do yelling at my phone trying to get speech to text to pick the right word.
thanks for solving my 2 largest issues, bug help...
Much Thanks

better keyboard does not have the mic button. If you are rooted, get the vanilla keyboard, that has the speech to text input
keyboard with speech

Over showthread.php?t=624416 jonasl has moded the default sense keyboard to have a smiley button, a speech to text setting that is fast and accurate, and A LOT more custom settings. It is by far the best and most customizable keyboard I have used for android.
If you decide to download the eris requires the Low Res version.
All cred to jonasl.

If you root your phone and use a froyo, android 2.2 rom the stock froyo keyboard has talk to text enabled from the get go and it's also very good. There are two at the top of the eris android development forum that are very stable. I personally recommend kaos froyo v24

[APP] TrueDialer -[R]- 22 December -[U]- 22 December -[V]- 1.40

Name: TrueDialer
Hi everyone,
TrueDialer is a free and smarter T9 dialer app. With the app you can quickly find and call your friends by entering parts of their name in a T9 combination. With the latest version you will even be able to send them text messages.
But in addition to this, when calling a phone number not already in your phonebook TrueDialer will automatically search white and yellow pages worldwide and even let you opt-in to the enhanced phone number directory from TrueCaller. From there you can easily save your new friends number with name pre-filled straight to your phonebook.
We'd love to have your feedback on our new app, what do you think about it and what can we improve?
Tips:
-First start can take a few seconds since your contacts are loading, please be patient
-Double tapping on the input field will clear it so you can start a new search quickly
-You can enter the name in numbers starting from anywhere so if your looking for the contact "Andrew Hill" in your phonebook you can type 263 for "and" or even 455 for "ill".

Hello,
The app doesn't work with French Yellow/White pages. Have I missed something ?
Thank you.
Thanks. It looks promising, but unfortunately it doesn't work well on my HD2. I get Black square No response most of the time. When I type, names start to show, but disappear after some time with the black square and No response label.
I am on HD2O rom and use Exchange and Live Mail accounts. Contacts are synchronized with Exchange and Pushed on update.
EDIT (FIXED): If I am on wireless behind Firewall first time I install this app then it is behaving like described despite the enhanced search is turned off. But if then I go on Data connection (no wireless) it works! When the popup dialog asks if I want to use enhanced search or something and I click Cancel then it works even connected to wireless behind the firewall.
That is only a minor bug I guess but I got it the very first time I installed this app.
A few suggestions to make it better:
1. Make Contacts pics optional (turn on or off in settings) - it will look neater in a name list and possibly faster.
2. Make letters in names that match the typed number sequence in accent colour like the original dialer in search results - it is very handy and looks very pro.
3. Make numbers bigger and without the textbox frame. They should be at least font size used in name list for names. It is a search field, and people will type 5-6 numbers at most and not 25 or 30 like now.
4. When you type for a very brief moment I can see Searching online despite all online searching turned off. Is it a bug?
Hope this helps... It is a very good app. Thanks again.

Hi there and thank you for your suggestions!
1. Coming in the next update!
2. Also on the way!
3. The reason this is a textbox is because some users want to be able to paste a number to search for, a action that is currently not possible without a textbox. But I'll make the text size bigger in the next update!
4. The application can search online even though you have enhanced search off. The difference is that it will then only search in public white/yellow pages directories which are very limited in quality.

Great!
4. So it is a T9 dialer WITH online Phonebook search at all times.
I would prefer a T9 dialer WITH OR WITHOUT online Phonebook search at all times.
A couple of reasons:
a) Truecaller doesn't work for all countries. I couldn't find anything for any of my contacts. So it is actually useless for the most of the time.
b) Some people don't want data connection at all times or have no data connection or want to minimize costs and need only t9 dialer. Roaming for example?
c) Perhaps it is even faster without an online connection?
d) Just to make some people happier with a setting to disable all data connections?
Cheers!
Please add a unread call counter and mobile operator indicator into the tile (as the original windows phone 7 telephone live tile): I would like to use TrueDialer to replace completely the MS one

Try this number for instance

Petit Delphine
32 r Lehot
92600 ASNIERES SUR SEINE
01 55 02 09 11
Thank you
One Small Bug :
Even if I press cancel when it prompts to initiate a call, it gets listed in History. This happens even when I tap an item in history.

Will add the current mobile operator, however I am not sure how reliable this can be as the local tiles are only updated once every half hour.
Regarding the unread call counter, this is currently not possible because of limitations within the WP7 API platform.

Windows Phone doesn't return information on if the user actually did press call or not which is why you see it added to the history list even if you didn't answer. I'm sure this will be fixed in future versions of WP7 and we'll of course update TrueDialer then!

[APP] 9-Keyboard -- Nokia-style typing

Hey guys,
I found an app which allows you to type text messages like on an old Nokia cellphone (except T9).
You can download it for free and without any ads from the marketplace: http://windowsphone.com/s?appid=a01a764e-265d-418b-b7e6-802936a692e0
The app is just great. It would be awesome if you could make something to introduce it in the system of the phone, so when you want to write an email or type an web adress you can change from full qwerty to this 1-9
Great job
So happy of hearing that someone still cares about alphanumeric keyboard, I was desperate because I couldn't find any alternative to QWERTY. If you'll be able to include T9 I think that your app would be perfect to text sms quickly with one hand
however I wanted to suggest something like that:
I've noticed that in settings(system)/keyboard, are already available 12-key (alphanumeric) keyboards for some languages (chinese, japanese, korean). I was wondering if it was possible to modify them in a simple way to obtain a full-system integrated keypad with T9 too =)
Btw. In your app, you cannot write numbers 2 and 0.
Nice
Just tried and rated it - nice little app, it's easy to get nostalgic using it
I can confirm the little bug about entering 0 and 2 of the previous poster, doesn't work right now.
Why not add an icon/function to paste the text to the clipboard? It's easy to do in the program, just 1 line of code, and like this one can also use the written text for e-mail, Twitter apps etc.
By the way, you gave the link to the US Marketplace. The app is probably available world wide; if you give the "deep link" as indicated in the details about the app on create.msdn.com the link will lead people directly to their particular, possibly non-US marketplace.

[Q] Keyboard with individual predictions?

Hi Guys,
I was thinking about buying a Samsung Ativ S because my Android device isn't working correctly.
But there is one point which makes me thinking about staying with Android.
Therefore i wanted to ask, if there is a Swiftkey equivalent on WP?
Or is the WP keyboard also capable of adapting the predictions to the words i often type, even if i type some words in an uncommon way?
Thanks in advance
Cheers
It's quite capable of adapting to the words you type, although if the word is not in its dictionary (which is quite comprehensive, in my experience) you will need to add it manually (easily done). Correct the word (or undo an auto-correction) a few times and it will quickly learn. With that said, I don't know Swiftkey (and the keyboard can not *currently* be changed, although the ATIV S is the WP8 model that we're closest to achieving that with). It's quite possible that there are specific features of Swiftkey that you're looking for which WP8 does not provide.
Thanks for your answer. The cool thing in using Swiftkey is that if you are typing a word it is predicting the next word without typing the first letter.
Is it the same in WP?
And another question, does the WP messaging app convert a SMS to MMS after having more than 480 (three SMS) characters typed in, because that is a thing which, in my opinion is weird "feature" in a time in which nearly everyone does have a flatrate in sending SMS?
Cheers
The WP8 keyboard will offer auto-complete options for the next word based on what you've typed so far, yes. You need to manually select them - no just hitting Space, Space, Space to type the next three words - but it's very easy to do.
I don't know what the threshold is (I don't write long SMS very often, and for people who don't have unlimited SMS I use chat) but WP8 will combine sufficiently long multi-SMS messages into a single MMS, yes.
