What does it mean to 'flash' something? I just installed the newest version of CM, and was attempting to install a new lockscreen, but I can't seem to figure out what to do. I've tried searching the forums here and google but I don't seem to have much luck. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

You 'flashed' Cm, you 'flash' the lockscreen the same way. Flashing is when you put a new rom/mod/etc on your phone by 'flashing' through recovery. That's the best way I can explain it. But if you didn't know what 'flash' meant, you probably shouldn't have rooted

hmm, then perhaps its an issue with the lockscreen file as my G1 won't go past the initial screen. Thanks for the help.
I'm assuming that you're refering to Stericson's lockscreen mod. That absolutely HAS to be compiled for the particular rom you're using. If you flashed the wrong one - you'll start having all kinds of problems. To fix them, you will need to re-flash your original rom (in your case CM 4.2.11.1) and then flash rom-specific lockscreen. Here's the link for CM's 4.2.11.1 lockscreen.
Good luck

I have no clue where to post this all i know is mine is a Hero and this is a Hero thread correct? Well I'm trying to do a couple things here.. First of all i want to know how to get rid of things I flashed? Like say I flashed a theme. How do i un flash it? or what ever you call that? Also i was wondering how to combine multiple themes people made together to make it more of my own? If that is possible for someone who's has there phone rooted for 2 days lol. I'm using the newest version of DC. Thanks
The easiest way to remove a theme is to restore a nandroid backup from before you applied the theme. Otherwise, you can extract the ROM that you flashed to your phone, find out what files the theme you flashed modified, and then adb push the original files (from the extracted ROM) to your phone.
Was that all the info on how to get the theme off right?

Yes. Unfortunately, I can't help you on combining themes. All I DO know, is that you would need to put certain icons into certain folders.
Okay thank you Also i just thought of the other thing i needed to know. How do I keep my apps with out having to redownload them all when i want to try out a new ROM? Im guessing its possible considering everyone switches between ROMS alot.
After the initial jubilation of finally getting Gingerbread on my stock Nexus one, I have come to the conclusion that its a little half baked and setting aside all the little annoyances, the current battery life bug that seems to be affecting some people (myself included) is just terrible.
So my question is, how to I get back to stock 2.2 (or 2.2.2) now that I have 2.3.3 installed.
I don't want to root, or open the boot loader or do anything to invalidate the warranty. Is there a way ?
Thanks, and sorry if this has already been covered somewhere else (could not find it)

Worked for lots of people, don't know if it works for 2.3, it worked for 2.2.
So.. ya might just wanna keep an open mind.
Anyway, some of the links on the page are dead, you might need to dig around for what you need.
Google is your friend

I tried this also (just to see for myself, instead of listening to the rumors), and can confirm it works.
The only comment I would make is that the filename is NOT case sensitive (I got it to work as PASSIMG.zip, passimg.zip, and also combinations like PassImG.zip)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Passimg method is working? Nice find! I imagine this will be of great help to many people.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help, I will give it a go.
In terms of the most recent version that I can go back to, I assume it has to be a manufacturer shipment ROM or full system image.
The latest release on shipped roms is FRG33 http shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Passion%20(Nexus%20One
I found on the HTC developers site (http developer.htc.com/) FRG83 but the link seems to be broken http dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/signed-passion-img-FRG83_0923.zip
Assuming I can find a copy of FRG83 system image, am I correct in assuming I can also rename this to passimg.zip and downgrade or does it have to be the FRG33 manufacture shipped rom?
ps, sorry i cant post url links hence the http
If it's a shipped image, then yes.
If you look in the zip, and see a bunch of image files, instead of a folder structure, then it will probably work...
Let me know if you find FRG83.
I know someone who would LOVE to find it!

Hi,
I know this question may sound stupid but I have this doubt and I would like to understand better one thing:
Can someone please explain me why it's not possible to restore 2.2 from 2.3.3 using directly a nandroid restore skipping the PASSIMG.zip part?
I'm new to this and I'm still learning some things, but if the nandroid is a backup of the entire system, why can't I just wipe out everything and restore from that file?
Thank you so much for your help!
If you have nandroid - great.
If you flashed stock image - you don't have it anymore, because stock image overwrites your custom recovery, and without unlocked bootloader or option to root, there is no way to restore it.
Thank you so much for the reply
So, just to be sure: since my bootloader is unlocked this means that if I wipe everything, then I can flash a custom recovery and then restore from a nandroid backup without having to flash first another stock ROM and root again, right?
That is correct.
However, keep in mind that rebooting your phone when you soil have the stock ROM will cause the stock recovery to be restored, so as soon as you install your custom recovery, you need to boot into recovery without rebooting the phone...

Hey ya'll got a question. I'm trying to put CM7 on my buddies vibrant (2.2 stock) but running into an issue. We got it rooted but when it goes into 3e recovery it keeps giving me the error that it can't reinstall packages even when I put in on the internal memory renamed to Update.zip.
Is there any way to flash CWM through Odin? Or do I need to go back to stock (2.1) and try it that way. From searching it seems like people aren't really having this problem. I can't be the only one.
Any help appreciated
thanks!
have you tried more than just one cwm?
i have several - yellow, green(froyo), blue, purple.
just search for them on the forums they are here.
i think you need green one.
hope this helps.

you need to flash it through clockword recovery (install rom manager and then you can install it through there) and not through stock recovery.

I used this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 to root it.
Option A was the one I used. Option B has the CWR in it but you'll need to have a ROM ready to flash.
IIRC the one (RM) I downloaded from the market was green.

Not really seeing option A or B. IS this option A:
1 – Return to stock JFD (2.1). This is what the Vibrant shipped with. You do this using ODIN.
This is a program for your PC that allows you to flash the stock firmware. Those on a Mac (it's cross-platform too) need Heimdall which I do not use/support.
Wait I see it now. Which one do you recommend I do?
Couldn't resist quoting myself on this one. Sorry and not to be a smartass but...

That is to root it but Option B has CWR in it and then most ROMS will have 3e recovery included. Leaving for the day but I suggest looking in the Q&A section before you get flamed for this over here in the Dev section.
^ yes, thank you.
Not everyone gets my two options... I tried to make it easy. B is MUCH easier and faster in my opinion.
Sorry about that guys I swore I posted this is the Q&A. Thanks for the help as soon as my buddy brings the phone back over we'll try this.
thanks!
Worked like a charm! Thanks guys!

Do you have any idea which particular ROM you want to flash?
I am using Overcome 4.1 which has a comprehensive install guide, you could start with that as a good introduction to flashing - besides it is an awesome ROM

Hello. I am new to this forum. I did do searching before I came here. I am sort of a noob so sorry for dumb questions. I wanted an MIUI theme on my phone. I tried MiHome but it doesn't change the UI so I want to get the MIUI ROM on my phone but I wasn't sure how. I know you have to root your phone first, but I read somewhere that MIUI isn't compatible with different rooting procedures like CyanogenMod. If thats true, which one is it compatible with? Is it possible for me to get MIUI on my phone? I have an HTC Vivid (of course) with Android ICS 4.0.3. Can anyone provide me with a guide on how to do get MIUI on my phone, preferably a video with a step-by-step description (yes, thats how noobish I am). Also, what are the odds of me rooting my phone if I follow the steps exactly as told? Sorry for a ton of questions. To sum things up, I would like to get MIUI ROM on my phone but have no idea how. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Alright....you need to do ALOT of reading...I only say that so you don't brick your phone...but here's some info as well as how to get miui
It doesn't matter how you root your phone, you can still flash any Rom...you don't even need to be rooted to flash roms
Cyanogenmod is not a rooting method, it is an aosp rom...you cam flash from cyanogen but our device doeant even have a cyanogenmod Rom (well there is one but it was discontinued...for now)
In order to get miui you will need to do the following:
1) unlock bootloader
2) get recovery
3) download miui onto your phone (can't be any miui...has to be one made for our phone...you can find it on rootzwiki.com)
4) flash miui
More detail:
In order to unlock bootloader and get a recovery I suggest using Hansen vivid toolkit that is stickier in the dev section...its the easiest most newb friendly way to unlock bootloader and get a recovery...for the most part all you do is plug in your phone and click a few buttons...here's the toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003

I guess I'm forced to use my slow PC. Hopefully it won't shut down in the process or else I'll be screwed. :/ Thanks again! I'll let you know if it works out if you want.
Just some ideas , if your pc is slow you can download and of the files you need on your phone then transfer them over to the pc , also if you download the tool kit you shouldn't need anything else but the Rom , if you get s off you will need to do a couple of things , but as mg said do some reading on this subject to kinda get an idea as to what your working with , make sure you kinda understand it so you don't brick your ph. Better safe than sorry .
Good luck and if you have questions there is a lot of good people here and would be glad to help.

Help! I managed to root my phone, which is good. I am currently using WCX. I am not sure how to flash the rom. I tried going to my internal sd card and installing the miui zip file from there. After it reboots my phone, an htc logo loads, then it takes me to some chinese. It has like big chinese words on top in red, then in the middle it has white words, and in between the white words, it loads from 0 to 100 but I have no idea what to do now. It just leaves me stuck on this page! Can anyone help me? Do I need to uninstall the rom then follow a correct process of installation or can I just do the correct process? Also, please don't redirect me to some page, because I did a lot of googling and I found one which would help me, but the site is down. I am sure it isn't a long process. This is what I did:
1. Manually put the zip file into my internal sd card.
2. Rebooted my phone to recovery.
3. Installed the zip file, which flashed the rom.
Is that correct? Can someone please help me! Thanks!

I tried what you said. I am using the All In One tool kit that someone told me to use so I flashed the kernel (boot.img) through that, assuming it is fastboot. I then rebooted my phone to recovery and selected the zip file, it flashed it. I rebooted my phone and it still takes me to that chinese screen. Is there a different MIUI ROM zip file download? Maybe a different file would work? Thanks in advance!

With the ROM I used, since I am S-On (which I assume you are too since you did not do the wire jump thing from what I read) after you initially flash the boot.img file using fastboot, you need to flash the rom, which you said you did. Then go back in and reboot to bootloader, and flash the boot.img again. It may have been just specific to the Rom I used, but that is the instructions I followed for mine. I hope you made a nandroid before you flashed Miui in case you ran into these troubles....
