Problem: Stuck at G1 Screen - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was running Super D 1.2, flashed to 1.4 earlier this week with no problems. Went to flash to 1.5.1 last night and had an issue.
When I rooted I used hardSPL and didn't touch the radio. To flash super D 1.5.1 I needed to get Haykuro's radio and Danger SPL.
I wasn't aware I needed the new radio first and that's where the problem started.
I put danger SPL and super D on my card, booted up in recovery (amon_ra's), did a nan backup, flashed danger, then tried to flash 1.5.1 and got this error:
e: can't symlink /system/xbin/bb/[
e: failure at line 59:
symlink /system/xbin/busybox SYSTEM:xbin/bb/[
Installation aborted
After I got the error, I hit reboot so I could put 2.22.19.26i radio on my phone, and bam, stuck on G1 splash screen no matter how I try to boot up.
It's my fault for not checking the radio, This is my second time flashing a new rom (I rooted my G1 a few weeks ago)
I took my sd out and put it on my comp, so I have access to my sd thru my comp. Is there anything I can put on there to try and boot up in recovery and fix this? I have a nan back up from last week and last night before I flashed anything.
thanks in advance

Like all the other post say, flash the radio before the spl. If you failed to read the instructions and can not boot into recovery or fastboot, you have a brick.

No, you shouldn't have to, but did you check before (can't check now)? There have also been cases where you got a bad download or it didn't work right, this also causes bricks. And please don't be a jerk and blame haykuro for this, I know some people have

I guess I failed to follow instructions lol ...
So I can't put a previous rom or anything on my sd from my comp to try and boot into recovery?

Well, enjoy your brick. You can replace the mobo, or break into htc and take the machine they used to originally put android on it, connect it to your phone's jtag's and watch the magic. Of course the second option comes with heavy fines, lawsuits, and jail time. Or you could buy a new phone

Nice, i'm an idiot.
Can I send it to HTC to get fixed?

No you can't, you broke the warranty by rooting in the first place :/
So, buy a new phone

bah! ...this sucks.
It be nice if they offered a service to fix them, for a charge of course.
Before I rooted I sent the phone to them to get some minor stuff fixed under warranty (which it was), but to be covered under warranty they said they had to make sure the damage wasn't user caused and the phone didn't have any aftermarket roms on it.
Guess i'll be shopping for a new one

On special occasions they do.

So you have a bricked phone! Care to donate it to the 'i wanna play with the motherboard' charity? Lol

just a stab in the dark, can you get into recovery with the USB cable connected / or a wall charger plugged in? (Hold home and long press power)

How long should I hold it? I just tried connecting via usb and home+power for about a minute with no luck.
Should it be home+power, but only hold power for a while? And how long?

Bricked G1

right i know how i bricked my G1
did spl before radio .. so the outcome is basiclly it hangs on the screen thing
i passed the phone down to my little brother so hes been using it for some time i ain been on the g1 scene for quite some time until yesterday he started ranting on bout me upgrading his system to the Hero ports
my main question was is there a way to recover this problem
or am i going to have to go tru my friends at t-mobile

Shaji... 1st off how is your little brother using a "bricked" phone? If it is bricked it can't be used let alone have the ROM updated to the Hero ROM's. Also there are several threads over in the " Dream android development " that should provide you with PLENTY of information that you seek... good luck with T-Mobile...
peace
...tell T-Mobile you got an OTA update and phone never booted past the first screen after. You're phone is bricked ,get a new one.

I did the same thing the night Haykuro came out with all his new stuff for that. I flashed SPL before radio, but I was able to fix it. I'll pull up the email I worked out with him, PM me for it.
Disconnect usb, take out the battery and plug it back it, connect usb, boot the phone into the recovery mode, go to the console.
Enter then type this: echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
You now can access to ur sdcard from your computer, download a rom, change it to "update". Reboot the phone again, now try to wipe and install the update. After you install the update, flash the radio first, then the SPL. Let me know how it works out for you.
thanks for all the information people
@shaji007 Your post is quite confusing, can you tell us what you did in order? Can the phone get in to recovery (power+home) or the bootloader (power+camera)?
@phuthanvinh If you brick you can't get in to recovery.
@lukekirstein You know how to bring bricked G1's back to life? This I gotta see...
right basiclly
i followed the guide how to downgrade root n hack etc
did all that
then upgraded to one of JF builds
then i was going to install the hero ports that have been flying around
however this is my fault i wasnt really concentrating and i upgraded the spl before the radio
so yea its bricked on there
i just thought xda might have a way of fixing it back up
getting it replaced with t-mobile is of course no problem but i dont want to go through the hassle

HELP!!! Stuck at g1 screen!

I just got a new g1 and i was rooting it but forgot to install the new spl before flashing a build so i flashed the build and got a "cant symlink" error.
After that i figured out it was the spl so i flashed the new spl and it installed fine but when it said press home+back to reboot i just took out the battery...
Now I have to tried to boot the phone into recovery with home+power and camera+power and it still just remains on the g1 screen!
Please help!
Cant SYMLINK
First of all did you install the radio first? AND THEN THE SPL? or did u just install the SPL?
If you only installed the SPL then youre pretty much f****d and you need to go get a replacement device.
If you installed the radio first then the SPL then you should be ok just go back to recovery and reflash RADIO THEN SPL u can get them [here], but from what youre saying thats not the case.
If you do have to go to get a new device, it is free **at least mine was** I just said that i plugged it in the night before, it had been getting really hot and that when i woke up that morning it just wouldnt turn back on past the G1 boot screen. if you just got it you will be able to get away with saying "the phone said there was an update available, i downloaded the update and now it wont go past this screen" play it dumb and you should be ok.
Good luck, im hopin for the best, it sucks to have a brick lol i been there done that.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS LOAD ANOTHER ROM ON YOUR SD CARD, PULL THE BATTERY, GO INTO RECOVERY, WIPE, AND APPLY THE ROM! that is assuming you can get into recovery?
If you can't get into recovery sounds like another brick in the wall.

Im pretty sure i flashed the radio first but i forgot the spl and flashed the rom next... then i realized i didnt flash the spl and tried to flash it and it "successfully installed the update" so i pulled the battery out to reboot it and it just stuck at the g1 screen when i booted it... and no button combos worked to get into boot loader or anything like that...
but i called tmobile and they are sending me a new phone on tuesday lol
i dunno if i want to try it again =/
i thought i read somewhere that the newer phones brick easier? because of the new "board" or something
so do i

you thought the best way to reboot your phone...was by pulling the battery? even though the recovery said reboot by pressing Home+Back keys to do it, which would be infinately easier? Have you ever "rebooted" your PC by pulling the power cord? nvm dont answer that....
I would suggest you stay the hell away from the spl until you understand wtf your doing.
rebooting PROPERLY would have allowed the image to be written properly.
EDIT: LOL wow nvm this is a thread brought back from the dead......

phone stuck at Rogers welcome screen

hi
i flashed my htc dream with the new rogers rom update. i then rooted it using the 1-click-method, and confirmed by running "adb root". I then flashed hardspl and now when i reboot i am stuck at the rogers boot-up screen. trying to boot with camera+power, home+power or back+power has no effect. i have to pull the battery to turn it off. also, when plugged in with usb there is no response.
bricked or something else i can do?
if you have no access to spl or recovery then it is indeed a brick.

thanks for your response. i read in your sticky that after spl upgrade it can take up to 15 minutes to boot, so now i am waiting and hoping, somehow it will come back to life (about 5 mins left)
update: 15 minutes gone by and still stuck
it will take up to 15 mins to do a normal boot but not if you hold camera+power. holding camera sends you straight to the spl. If it doesn't do that then there's nothing you can do. Can you provide a link to the spl you downloaded?

hard spl is not the same as the 2005 spl. you need the haykuro spl.
make sure you read the thread "rogers, heres your real root"
that way you get a better understanding of the phone. it seems as though rogers and the g1 are 2 completely different animals

G1 stocked in G1 screen after ROM update

Hi,
I got a G1 Root/mod with DREAIMG-RC29, it was working with all functions, then I was trying to put SuperD 1.8
As did this:
1.Flash Radio (2.22.19.26I Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I)
2.Flash SPL (1.33.2005)
agreed this tutorial forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613809
3. Then I format my 8Gb midroSd as quoted in (androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/)
4. when I was flashing the new rom(SuperD18-blk), I did it as usual: change name from "SuperD18-blk.zip" to "update.zip", power off, power+home, alt+w, alt+s.
5. An error came up, something like error in line 59, something with E:/ bla bla, or something, i didn't read it 'cuz suddenly the phone restart itself.
After this I can't go to console or recovery mode.
I tried:
-Home+power to go to recovery mode.
-Home+camera button with RC29 on re-formated FAT32 SD card.
-Go to recovery trough abdshell, but my computer doesn't recognize the device so is not possible to get into the phone via PC.
Now the G1 is in the same situation: T-mobile G1 screen, so, I want to know if there is something that I can do to recover this or, maybe other way to roll back to RC29.
I'll appreciate any help, is sad to get stucked between the heaven and hell!!!!!!! The bad thing is that I don't got any log!!!
Cheers..... Alecks
Use fastboot with an old nandroid backup
RC29 includes an old radio image not compatible with 1.33.2005 SPL. If you had 1.33.2005 on the phone and reflashed RC29 when your update failed, the phone is most likely bricked.
dude most likely you are in deep dookey although there is probably still a chance if you can see the Tmobile G1 Screen.

Is there any way to push the files into the phone with Eclipse? I got it even SDK, but I don't know how to do it exactly. The main issue is that the phone is not recognized by my PC currently, I think I have to perform some steps.. any idea?

G1 stuck at G1 screen

Started to root the phone went back to 1.5, worked fine, applied FlashRec.apk and Amon Ra’s Recovery Image installed all that correctly worked fine. Went to install a new radio and spl and applied spl and when i go to start the phone it gets stuck at the G1 boot screen. Tried to book into recovery mode nothing happens , tried to hard & soft reset nothing happens. Phone just stays stuck at the G1 left it on for an hour and still nothing. Please help in any way or ask for more info if need.
Thanks in advance.
if you flashed the danger spl before flashing the new radio, your phone got permanent brick and cannot be solved without JTAG or changing the motherboard.
OK- I have the same problem, except I flashed the wrong radio.
(I thought I needed to update it for a different ROM, but.)
No fastboot, no recovery-- If I hold down the trackball, the screen wont come on, but the blue LED does. Is that useful to me at all??
Can JTAG help me? or is there another way?
I was reading about mtty-- but i'm not sure if that'll work for my G1.
Anything to unbrick this--- I really need my phone for finals week which started to-day.

MTTY is just a program to talk to the serial port; it is actually part of the JTAG solution as well .. but as mentioned it will not help you at this point in time.

JTAG.. but unless you live near me or one of the very very few others who are set up for jtag hacks.. and that person is confident enough not to make the main board of the phone one big solder blob [I am but I'm not sure if some of the others I've heard poke JTAG are as confident].. it will take you a large chunk of time to learn what is needed to make it work.. or longer than the finals in the mail.
Thus I recommend.. get a cheap phone at the stand at the mall.. and pass your finals before worrying about the brick.
Since everyone who has caused a brick has either (1) not properly followed the directions and warnings.. or (2) did something in haste missing an important step; it will be no good to race it together during finals.
this dream was sent to my friend as a replacement
never used
he gave it to me sayingit wont boot
it gets into fastboot
it says:
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-1.22.12.29
Sep 2 2008
so i formatted his sdcard, got the DREAIMG.nbh put it on his sdcard, entered into fastboot, and it ran the install (rainbow screen) nothing was happening from there before i copied the DREAIMG.nbh to it, so at least this installed successfully)
then i rebooted (call-menu-power at same time) and still stuck at G1 screen after twenty minutes...whats happening here, anybody?

Odd, the nbh files usually flash a full system.. thus while they might leave you with a rom you don't wish to have they usually will boot afterwards. You did let it fully flash all the partitions correct?
What nbh did you find/flash?
And. Can you still enter the spl or recovery.

yeah i dont know, all i know is i can ONLY getinto the bootloader, which is the ORIGINAL bootloader (0.95.0000)
what can i do with this thing?
what do i flash to it (cause it aint the RC29 DREAIMG.nbh)?
i refuse to lose
well only bootloader means nothing. you cold be getting a bad .nbh and the recovery partition could have something nasty on it. both of those not working doesn't automatically make it a brick. a working bootloader says everything is ok.
set up fastboot and fastboot a new recovery image.
then see if your recovery works. next time i don't respond, feel free to pm me again, lol. i really have a hard time keeping up with where i post.
of course: you can also fastboot a new spl:
http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/downloads/list?q=label:SPL
I recommend:
EngBootloader_v2_NoSigCheck.zip
That way you don't have to mess with that nasty danger spl and then you actually will be bricked.
