how do you find out what spl you have ?
can someone breifly explain to me what SPL is
and i right in thinking SPL is what can make a brick ?
hold camera and power to boot in to the SPL (when the phone is off) and it will tell you. A rainbow screen means it's stock.
The SPLs other than stock allow you to use fastboot to flash things like splash images and restore nandroid backups. Haykuro's SPL (aka "Danger SPL") allows you to run HTC based ROMs like Hero and Rogers. Make sure you have the cupcake/1.5 radio (which you should already have) before flashing, otherwise it will brick.
Downgrade to Hard SPL from Danger SPL??

When I rooted my phone I installed Haykuro's danger spl with the latest radio. I didn't know it can potentially brick your phone (hence the danger part lol). I'm running cyanogen 4.0.1 and it's working just fine so far but I had 3 questions
1) Is Hykuro's Danger SPL only risky during the installation process or can it still possibly brick your phone after a successful installation (in other words, elaborate on the "danger" part please)
2) Can I downgrade to Hard SPL after installing the Danger SPL
3) How would I downgrade to Hard SPL?
Thanks guys!!!
If you are using Haykuro's spl there is no need to downgrade, it will allow you to run anything the hard spl will and more. The only "danger" with haykuros spl is when you flash it, if you successfully flashed it then you have nothing to worry about.
Rodey is correct, that H's SPL does everything hardSPL does (fastboot ect) and sloows you to run HTC Based ROMs. I don't know why you would want to downgrade but if you do it should be as simple as flashing the hardSPL update.zip. Get a secind opinion on that though if you want to try it, I'm no hardSPL expert.
You will only brick your phone with haykuro's SPL if you dont have a PVT board (camer+power to boot in to SPL, it will tell you) and if you dont have to 1.5 radio. To check either in the SPL or Settings > about phone check the baseband is version 2.22.19.26 (if you go to about phone there will be some crap before the number, ignore it).
IMO H's SPL is just handy to have. As long as you have the new radio and a PVT board nothing *touch wood* should go wrong.
One more thing, when flashing the SPL, don't play hot potato with your phone ;-)

Unless you are Unrooting and flash the original spl. I've done this many times so I know it works.
Does SPL: 1.33.2005 help the regular ROMS run better (Cyanogen's)?
I use dxTop, seems to run out of memory quickly.

If you didn't downgrade to RC29/7 then you should have the 1.5 radio. Check by going to Settings > About Phone and baseband version. It should be 2.22.19.26I.
I think you can just flash HardSPL as update.zip as you are, but I' not completely sure...

I swear I've heard people say they have, but dowgrading the radio after installing Danger SPL did cause bricks...
I'll go check
You WILL brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade your radio after flashing the new SPL or if you do not have the latest radio installed before flashing the new SPL

FYI
FYI
@Adrian K and nephron
When I unrooted my spare G1, I got it completely back to stock (circa October original shipment stock)
I downgraded my SPL successfully from the danger SPL all the way back to the original SPL. Also when I downgraded back DREAIMG.nbh, I confirmed at the time that the radio downgraded with it. My original post was on the unlockr.com when I was trying to help David of unlockr.com with some tutorials.
My original quote from unlockr
BTW: I have confirmed via the bootloader that the radio DOWNGRADES back to stock by applying the DREAIMG.nbh update FYI
From the bootloader I am now at

I think it's downgrading the Radio, while on Danger SPL that will brick your phone b.
I have also gone from Hard to Danger back to Hard again with no issues.
if i use the 1click root method and then install cyanogens 4.0.1... do i actually need to do the hardspl and the radio or is that all taken care of? that's the only thing that's confusing me a little bit...

If you are talking about the one click method that is know on the market as recovery flasher, that only takes care of granting root access and flashing cyanogen's recovery image. The radio and spl upgrades are on you.
Try here for more explanation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550050
yea that's what i'm talking about... now don't get me wrong, i believe you guys here on xda first and foremost... but theres a video tutorial on android and me, and it doesn't show them installing the radio and spl between using the recovery flasher and then installing cyanogens 4.0.1... are they not doing it right in the video or are the radio and spl optional? all the guides on here seem to say you do have to flash them but the video clearly shows them not stopping to do it. so maybe their video just sucks haha. but any idea on that?
thanks so much
I have 1 click rooted and installed Cyanogen 4.01, I am on CRC1, my understanding was as I was already on 1.5 Cupcake, my current SPL and Radio were current.
I read somewhere that the 1 click method is only temporary root. But if someone could elaborate on this it would be very helpful. Also what is this hard spl ?
Ok, so my phone's currently on eBay. I'm leaving the android world and heading back to iPhone land. So I'm going to need to unroot.
My specs:UK phone, 26I radio, 1.33.2005 SPL, Cyanogen 4.04 + 1.4 recovery.
So do I simply flash the RC7 update to get back to 1.0 (it's a UK phone, so not 29) via the SPL (which isn't stock)? As far as I'm aware the recovery image on stock G1's allows the user to flash official updates, so can I just flash the one for 1.5 or 1.6? Does anyone who where I'd find those offcial updates for UK phones?
you want to flash the original SPL first, then you can load up your RC7 and that will overwrite everything else
**edit** I know the official OTA UK cupcake update was posted to Phandroid around May, cause I used the UK version to check out cupcake before it was available in the US
I thought the RC7 NBH would also flash the SPL...at least that's what I read. I guess I can always reflash the stock SPL, I'm just trying to be uber cuatious and not brick this thing...
no the nbh file will overwrite everything excepts your spl, you have to flash the spl first then boot your phone using camera + power to acess it to flash your nbh file, then you'll have RC7, then your phone is back to stock, then you can search out your official updates like rc9 and higher if you choose or sell it with rc7 and let the buyer wait for OTA updates
Ugh, you're right it even says it in the root guide. Thanks!
Now all I need to do is find the uk update.zip for 1.5...
this link still seems to be valid for the UK cupcake update

I was also under the impression that the nbh replaced the SPL as well. I have read many posts in which users stated that they safely downgraded to RC29/RC7with the DangerSPL and didn't brick. Also, the .nbh flash also states its replacing the SPL during the flash IIRC. Anyways, better safe than sorry.
Don't you think that you would get more money for selling a rooted G1 over stock? AND WHY IPHONE :'(

xda community,
sorry if it dosent belong here but if anything move it or lock it but really need help....
i received a replacement phone from tmobile with the radio 2.22.19.261 and that is the radio update we need...well i bricked 1 phone because i tried doing this and didnt notice that it had already the radio......what im concerned about is if i should skip the update radio step and just install the spl???? please some feedback would be greatly appreciated and once again sorry if it dosent belong here.
plz and thank you
the 2.22.26I is the radio that is needed to flash the 1.33.2005 spl. also make sure phone is a pvt instead of dvt by booting the phone into bootloader (camera and power) and find out on that screen. if you have both of those then the 1.33.2005 *should* (being the keyword) flash without problems.
it is a PVT board so you are suggesting i just flash the spl since the radio already came with the phone?

You should flash the Radio haykuro posted. I did just to be safe. I believe i saw one person brick even though he had the 26I radio, but i dont think he knew what he was doing.
if your gonna flash the .2005 spl, you might as well be extra safe and flash the radio. its only a few minutes more
quick update :
i went ahead and prayed that this went well.....since my g1 was pre-shipped with the newest RADIO version in an older g1 that had the newest radio i tried applying the Radio update and it bricked.....so this time i went ahead and (thanxz for the feedback) just flashed the SPL and VOILA !!! now i am testing the hero ROMs and BLUR rom.....thanks guys

I rooted my phone using the "one click" root method (from standard Rogers 1.5 firmware) (http://zenthought.org/system/files/a...1-20090908.apk) and then updated to the latest radio:
•2.22.19.26I
•Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
•http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecod..._22_19_26I.zip
I initiall got the box with the arrow then the phone continued to the Rogers boot screen and has been stuck there for 20 minutes at least! So i took out the battery and turned it back on again and it get stuck on the Rogers screen still!
Have I bricked it!?! I thought you can only brick it when you update the SPL ... all I did was update the radio. Please HELP!
If it helps I was following the instructions step by step from: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how...page=0,2
according to the cyanogen guide I bricked my phone:
2.Be very careful of any upgrade or mod instructions that require you to install an HTC "Recovery" zip/image, a replacement radio, or anything that might cause a difference of versions thereby bricking your phone.
eg: you currently have an EBI1 system and recovery image. If you boot an EBI0 radio image you will no longer be able to boot your phone.

Thanks in advance.
P.S. to clarfiy every button combination I press comes up with the Rogers boot screen. Unless I'm a complete idiot and am not pressing the buttons correctly I don't see how I can fix the phone if it won't boot! I though bricked phones are totaly duds (eg. they don't turn on/no charging lights...)
see if you can get it recovery mod? (home+end)
The main cause of bricks is using an SPL that is incompatible with the IPL (radio), hence it is possible not only to brick by changing the SPL, but also by changing the IPL.

Not a chance.
If all he did was change the IPL, then the ONLY cause for it doing locking as it is, is that the SPL is not compatible with that IPL. It is, therefore, bricked.
I didnt think that radio was compatible with the rogers phones, i thought that they had to use the 3.22.20.17 radio?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544654&highlight=rogers+root
if so that could be the cause of your brick!

Wow.... perhaps you should chill a little, these are Q&A forums, the purpose of which is to educate and help, not just baffle people with terms that its doubtful that they have heard before.
You'll see that i linked back to the thread that details everything that they should be to know not to make the mistake again, and anyone else that does a search will find it as well.
The rogers dream is compatiable with either radio. You just need your recovery/kernel version to match your radio version. The 2.22.19.26I radio needs 32B and 3.22.20.17 needs 32A recovery/kernel.
He needs to reflash the 3.22.20.17 radio then complete the rogers dream rooting guide on the cm wiki.
While trying to root my Rogers HTC Dream I screwed the thing up and managed to flash a T-Mobile G1 ROM. In doing so, I inadvertently got rid of dangerspl, reverting to 0.95*. I found a thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771633
where someone else managed to pull the same stunt. However, he was lucky enough to have a different spl on his phone that allowed him to flash a Rogers ROM. In that thread it was suggested that it might be possible to flash an RC29 ROM using a goldcard, hopefully making it possible for the phone to boot as a tmobile g1, thus making it possible to root as a g1 and re-install danger spl followed by a Rogers ROM. Unfortunately this isn't the case, because after going through the trouble of creating a goldcard and finally being able to flash the g1 ROM, the phone won't move past it's carrier logo screen. It still has the 0.95* SPL. I'm finally out of ideas here and am open to suggestions
Oh and I should probably mention that I can't connect to the phone using adb at this point either, so that's out
UPDATE: I tried placing a rogers dreaimg.nbh on the goldcard and flashing it, but the bootloader stops as soon as it starts, saying "Update Terminate UPDATE FAIL" I can only assume this has something to do with trying to flash a canadian image with the tmobile spl... I'm starting to think this thing's bricked.

If it changed your SPL and RADIO, then chances are that you already wrote an RC29 image on it. Root it as normal for RC29, update the SPL to 1.33.2003 <-- ends with a THREE. Fastboot flash 2.22.23.02 radio. DO NOT flash any robbers B.S. onto it. From now on stick with proper EBI0 ROMs -- which means the majority of system images available.
Congratulations, your phone is now more compatible with everything. You are no longer stuck with EBI1 roms. This is a VERY GOOD thing -- don't throw it away.
I can't root it, though. I can't get it to boot into anything other than it's bootloader. Recovery won't work, fastboot won't work, and booting normally to the rc29 image won't work either. It just says "T-mobile G1" on the screen and can't move past that. I've looked around and couldn't find a way to change the SPL with only access to the bootloader. Can you give me an NBH that I can try to flash that might boot up allowing me to gain root access so that I CAN change the spl to what i need? Or just an NBH that would work with this phone/spl?

Ideas?
Re flash rc29.. you will need a gold card now.. once you get rc29 to boot root as if its a T-Mobile phone.
Sometimes nbh files fail when changing partition sizes.. and 1.33.2005 allows unsigned nbh files so possible something was corrupt.
Edit: BTW to flash a non rogers nbh you needed to already have an engineering spl thus you had to be rooted.. and able to fastboot to any working configuration desired.

Let me clarify. I tried to root the dream as per the usual method. After installing dangerspl i accidentally flashed a t-mobile nbh onto my dream. After that happened, dangerspl disappeared and i was left with the 0.95*, which won't work with any rogers rom I've tried so far, even on a goldcard. I am always left with the "Update terminate update fail" error.
I DID use a goldcard. I DID flash the t-mobile nbh (rc-29). When I turn on the phone it says TMOBILE G1 and doesn't move past that screen, and the only other way I can get it to boot is into the RGB bootloader. All I can seem to do from there is flash different nbh's with the goldcard I made, and the only one that works without giving an "Update Terminate UPDATE FAIL" error is the nbh that won't move past the t-mobile screen. Is it even possible to root the Dream as though it was a g1 if it isn't moving past that screen? What can I do?

I can't get to fastboot, it simply doesn't work. All I can do is bootloader or a t-mobile g1 screen that hangs.
Never had an issue with a clean rc29 install booting on a rogers phone.. connecting to rogers sure (making login harder) but always booted fine..
Try removing the sdcard after a re-flash of rc29 nbh, and make sure the sim is in the phone.. Otherwise I wish you luck.
Could the fact that it's a fido sim have anything to do with it? It worked fine on the dream before i even knew what rooting was, and i didnt have to change any settings or anything on the phone to get it to work, i just fired it in there. Do i need to borrow a Rogers one from somebody to get this to work?
EDIT: Just tried re-flashing rc-29 with the sim card in and no luck. tried it again, this time removing the sd card before turning on the phone, and it still just hangs at the G1 screen... ughghghghghgh
