Will I actually get a proper replacement? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it worth me sending my phone back to SE again? Or will I just get the same shoddy repair?
Batch : 08W46
It has already been in 3 times last year due to SE not actually repairing all the issues the first time. I've had cracks all over the body and the headphone socket breaking.
Now 6 months later I've got even more cracks all over the body (at least 7) but the more important thing is that the screen no longer rotates, the keyboard doesn't work, the touch screen doesn't work when they keyboard is out (not that it goes to landscape anyway) but more annoyingly is the touch screen keeps losing its alignment in portrait. I often have to align the screen a few times a day.

You have worn out flex cable, thats whats causing the crazy screen. I just got my one back from replacing it, and the cracks, and its doing just fine

Dude, all Xperia X1's crack and even the keyboard will loose sensitivity. Don't make this any more of a burden to Sony, 'cause they are doing really bad because of the send ins!
If you send it in, it will break again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must be joking?
I'd like to make it as much of a burden to Sony as possible, I know it might crack again but to be honest these days the cracks don't actually bother me, I just want a properly working phone. Roll on May when my contract is up.

It's SE quality issue so it's SE that should solve the problems. The thing to think about is, what phone will you be using while your Xperia is being repaired? Do they lend you a service phone or do you have a spare one?
Cheers!

I just had mine send in through T-mobile and they offered me a replacement phone. Luckily I have only three more months to go before I can renew my contract.
I have had it with the cracks. There is nothing that can be done but replacing the shell. Don't think I will get the new X2 either though. This has put me of SE for now.

When I first sent it in last year I was initially going to go through O2 but decided to go straight to SE.
O2 offered a loan phone that would've been the most basic phone they sold, since I went direct with SE I ended up using an old HTC Breeze I had lying about. I could've used my old Hermes but the bulk would've annoyed me.

Chrome buttons on AT&T tilt

To all the AT&T Tilt owners out there....has anyone had any issues with the chrome plating on the front buttons? specifically, has it worn off on any of the buttons? part of the chrome around the IE button has flaked off a bit. This is my second tilt, and the first one did the same thing. The chrome on the email button flaked off. Has anyone else run into this?
I called AT&T yesterday about it...they directed me to HTC. The guy at HTC told me that it would be considered phone damage, and will take $150 to $350 to replace the button. That's insane!
time to bust out the testers paint and the sequins.
Bearing in mind the Tytn II does not have those particular buttons chromed, it sounds like a manufacturing defect, as the chromed buttons on the 2 Tytn IIs that I have had have been fine - presuming that HTC apply the chrome to those buttons for AT&T, it may be that the process used is slightly different? Or the plastic is not prepped in the same way - either way, it sounds like a warranty issue, but you may need more evidence from other tilt users.
Wear and tear baby, they expect that the cosmetics may rub off from using it. Doesn't take away from the usefullness of the phone. YOU rubbed it off by using your fingers on it too much, it didn't just rub off on it's own.
Just stating what they might tell you, I've had to drop that line before on people. Not that I agree with it.
The 'Messaging' button is chipped off from the face of my Tilt. The others buttons, which I use a LOT more, are fine though.
pocket use ...
The IE button and the Messaging button have done this on my phone. I don't use those buttons so it has rubbed off from being carried around in my pocket. I carried the phone in a case for more than half the time I've owned it (since released in early October), so it must be pretty sensitive stuff. Doesn't keep the phone from working, just looks a little weird at night when I see a little square now light up where the Messaging button used to be.
What I recently noticed was the whole set of buttons on the face of the phone is sliding around inside the recessed area. Doesn't keep the buttons from working, but it didn't use to do this. I took it by the ATT store and had me call their phone replacement number. I explained to them the situation and they sent me out another phone. The thing is, this one does the same thing, just not so easily ... meaning that the button set still slides around, but just a little. If I'd known this, I'm not sure I would have bothered exchanging, especially since this one doesn't even have the new ROM, which obviously makes me think this is a refurbished unit. But there's no marks so I guess I'll see how it runs.

My buttons just began doing this as well. As far as exchanging my device, since it is working fine otherwise, I'm going to wait until September (month 11 of 12) to exchange mine. If I time it as good as I did with my 8125, I'll never be out of warranty since each unit they send you comes with a 60 day warranty against defects.
I thought i was the only one...i own HTC TYTN2
Chrome came off from the center joint of the "OK" "WIN" Keys... i mean the part under the DPAD. and ofcourse no one presses or rubs at that place.. since usually wear and tear is not covered in warranty..
i ordered this
http://cnn.cn/shop/tytn-iitilt-outer-keypad-p-2057.html
Button Icons are a bit different from the original one. but i am keeping it .. in case if more chrome comes out .... right now its pretty bearable...hope it stays like this
same here....all i have outlines on my internet explorer and messages buttons...the chrome plating seems to flake off so easily
no complaints here whatsoever. its still alive (except for minor scratches from the stylus on screen) and no flaking or anything. everything is still in tact
oh.. hello everyone, btw.
Mail button is flaking for me.
I've heard about this happening as early as November 2007 and I thought it would never happen to me. Guess it just took some time.
It's not really that ugly, so I'm not bothering to try to replace it. I'd be upset if outside the icons started to chip off though.
The silver line arround the earpiece has gone white for me, maybe sweat has corroded it? Also my phone panel has slowly started squeaking/creaking a bit on the sides of the front panel
I've had my Tilt since its release (October 5th) and not a single cosmetic issue.

Wow. I really like that. Chrome to me is rarely done right. It should be an accent, and not in places where it will wear easily.
My package from CNN just arrived today, I'll post pics of my TyTN II conversion in a few hours

Hi:
Are you sure this is correct? Believe me, I hope you are right, but for some reason with each replacement I have gotten they keep telling me the original warranty date still applies. Lol, I hope that made sense

What they told you is true, soft of. Whenever AT&T replaces you phone under warranty, the new device has either a 60 day warranty, or the balance of your original warranty, whichever is longer.
Say your phone is 1 week away from being out of warranty, and it suddenly fails... When AT&T replaces it for you, they give you a 60 day warranty on the refurb unit in case there is an issue with it. This is not something they will go out of their way to tell you, but it allowed me to keep getting a fresh 8125 every 45 days until the Tilt came out.
It also came in handy whenever the replacement 8125 was one of those pesky G4 models that couldn't be CID unlocked...

Don't keep your keys and your phone in the same pocket
I know what you are speaking of, but I have had no issue with my Tilt. The chrome is still perfect, but the keys do slightly float inside the housing. Mine has done this since new, but I really don't notice unless I try to slide the keys. I never notice this while actually using the phone. The only other blemish on the phone is my screen protector is obviously worn right where the X appears in the top right corner of the screen. That is only visible when the screen is off though. I'll wait a little longer to replace the screen protector. At least its not as bad as the screen of my old iPAQ was. You could see the lines from where I was dragging cards playing solitaire on it.

Dropped the X1! Display stopped working

Guys!
Sad news!
I droped the X1 yesterday while getting out of the car. It was in a pouch. And damm the display does not show up anymore. I get calls and all but the display does not show up atall. I am so pissed at myself. I checked with a local guy and he said the display would cost US$ 52 (apporx) Now that cheap but then he said thats not along with the touch screen. I Wonder how come the display and touch screen are different. Does anyone know?
Also had come across a thread of a X1 being opened. Can someone gimme the link if they know it.
Regards
if i remember i think there was a video on youtube that someone was opening an xperia step by step
the digitizer shouldnt be that expensive
someone who dropped the phone had similar problems.. maybe u can find it and see if there are solutions?
deja vu
Yeh I heard someone else here did that, seems it's quite sensitive to drops, Im guessing maybe the ribbon comes loose or something if the LCD isnt actually smashed? That being said, if it's just the screen, the touchscreen should still work and not need replacing aswell?
I mean if theyre the same piece and not interchangeable surely they would come together?
my touch stop working suddently, but the screen works fine... but the thing is that i doesnt drop the phone... i dont know... im waiting for a change now...
Check this video:

he also disassembles the rear here:

Dropped my X1 phone as well
I had recently dropped my phone as well and the screen also stopped working, but the phone was completely functional. The repairing people told me it would cost me approx $150+ to get it fixed. The next day i decided to turn the phone on again and the screen worked.
So hopefully, the screen will fix itself for you as well
Bummer
It sounds like the connecter behind the screen has come loose - 52 bucks to open it up and put it back sounds about right.
I'd give opening it up a try, although I remember reading the thread when the service manual for opening it was first leaked - the guys said it wasn't easy!
Is it not still under warranty or something?
no warranty?
warranty will fix it
I was the guy who dropped his and had the same problem. Sent it in for warranty (great service I bought in the UK but live in Barbados so I sent it to the US location). Got it back in two and a half weeks fixed for no charge. Mine didn't have any visible damage from the drop though so maybe that made a difference? Good luck with yours!
hey, i remove the screen protector and start working!!!

I had same problem, in SE service they change flat cable, cost me 25 euro.
I had the same problem yesterday. Just searching for disassemble example and it works all of sudden today!
my x1 dropped too and the display stopped working ( black screen ) , but ive only called the service and 2 days later i had a new device in my hands for free
my X1 work again!
Hey, thanks for the dissasembly links!
Mine fell down onto stone ground and i had the same symtomes, sounds, calls everything was working but not the display. I dissasembled and reassembled, and it worked again! I think the plug of the ribbon cable connecting the front panel with the mainboard in the back unit was loose.
Cheers!

Does your Diamond feature Newton's rings?

I am currently really interested in a Diamond, however the thread Oily liquid underneath screen - from nowhere kinda make me reconsidering it. Because of that I contacted HTC and received a surprisingly quick reply, stating that nearly every device sent in had a physical damage
Dear Sir, I can confirm that this fault is normally caused by physical damage to the device. Nearly every single device we have repaired with this fault has had some form of physical damage that has led to the fault. Of course the few that haven't were repaired under warranty. I quote directly from our repair centre: This issue is caused by air/liquid entering the LCD layer, and is nearly always OOW (Out Of Warranty) as it can only be caused by excess pressure on the screen. As long as you look after the device, and take care of it, this issue is unlikely to affect you. We have numerous Touch Dimonds here in our support centre, around 3 or 4 for each language we support, and not one of them have displayed this issue.

Today I took a look at some models on display in several stores and except for one all showed the same effect described in this thread. However I have to admit that this might not be the perfect example for a comparison as those poor phones probably not get treated extremely well in stores.
So I hope to find out with this poll how many people really have got this issue, respectively how many of them can explain it with too much pressure.
Thanks everyone.
I had exactly the same problem. Just went back to T-Mobile Netherlands, and they admitted directly that this is a common issue. They repaired it under warranty conditions at no fee at all. They just replaced the entire screen and luckily I've never faced the problem again.
Also, when the oilish liquid was there, the screen alignment was always a little outlined, and when you tap the slylus on that spot you can hear a strange hard "click".
Thanks to all voters, so far all voted to have no problems, except for one, I suppose peponline.
More opinions/votes appreciated.
I've got it on my 7 month old diamond - screen works ok, but tapping it isn't soft like it used to be. Not a bad enough problem to send it back and be without a phone for a couple of weeks, or risk being charged for!
Thanks for your post Alpsp, did it happen for no reason or did you do touch the screen once too hard?
Those who voted the third option, are you definitely sure it couldnt have come from too much pressure - maybe unnoticed in the pockets?
More comments/votes appreciated.
Hi Lutent, I can honestly say I don't believe I've put any abnormal amount of pressure on the screen - I'm pretty careful with the phone, it doesn't have a single scratch on it yet.
What is strange though, is that I've just tried to take a photo of the liquid for you, but it has completely disapppeared!
The only reason I can think of for this is that it hasn't been in my pocket all morning so will be cooler than usual. Also it doesn't show up so much in daylight - I'll have a look later tonight and see if I can photograph it
Hi all
I have the same issue. mine covers 50 % of the screen.
Whats funny is that its exactly right smack in the middle of the screen
its like a zoom box of the screen.
It appeared suddenly and all my touch screen alignments runs as well.
didnt have time to send for warranty until recently.
have sent it in now currently waiting for repairs to complete.
so far no news about if its OOW
smudge
Had this problem for some short time, the touchscreen has become hard to handle, as it's not very precise in the area of the "liquid spot", covering 1/9 of the center of the screen. Have no clue of where it came from.
Just sent an mail to the store, demanding replacement refering to this as a common problem after doing some reseach at different forums online.
Waiting for reply. Will notify the results.
Same problem with my HTC Fuze. It looked perfect. Never dropped. Made call. Looked good. Pulled it out 5 minutes later...the square was there. (I had just flown from Atlanta to LAX...I wonder if atmosphere had anything to do with it???)
Definitly a defect in design.
PS...The letter they sent is BS. It's not the LCD but the touchscreen. The touchscreen is touching the LCD...in my case anyway.
You will probably also notice a slight curvature of the touchscreen down toward the LCD if you look closely.
The reason they don't want to repair them is because this is the most time consuming repair. The phone has to be completely disassembled to attach the cable.
I am really pissed. i had liquid under the display just two days after I bought it.
I am super careful with all my electronic devices and not once did I have to send in any device to get it repaired.
the D2 was also always in the leather pouch.
For some reason, initially the oily liquid disappeared and I could keep on using it, however not it is there permanently and when I called the warranty place, they said that most likely I will have to pay for the repair as displays are not covered by warranty.
I am really pissed and would recommend buying a different phone. Sooner or late I bet everyone will have this problem. It happened to me after just two days, I can not imagine it to last 2 years or so...
Sigh... same issue here. I just bought a TP from a good friend of mine who is exceptionally carefull with his phones and I've just noticed a big part of the screen (1/4) being full with the Newton Rings.

touch screen not responding in landscape mode

for some reason when im in landscape mode (ie when the keyboard is out) the touchscreen doesnt work at all.
it works perfectly when im in portrait mode though so im not sure what it is. Is it possible something got detached when the screen i slide out the screen? i didnt drop it so im not sure whats causing this problem.
Hi, I have the same issue as you currently, I have tried different ROMs and this problem persists. Have you found a fix for this yet or does anyone else know how to fix? I too fear it is a hardware problem but havent dropped it or damaged it in any way.
Strange, i've got this problem from today, touchscreen just stops responding once i slide keyboard out but the hardware buttons remain working...
but if i manually change screen orientation without sliding keyboard out, the screen is still responsive...
Anyone know what could be wrong?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561151
almost certainly. Mine started out being unresponsive in landscape mode (just suddenly stopped responding to touch) and then ended up black screening whenever i slid it open.
see pic 1 for what is probably happening. I've done the fix in pic 2 myself (although i've put felt on BOTH sides now) but if you have warranty then use it of course!!
HTH!
btw I think most X1 users are going to "Xperience" this at some point. I did nothing unusual to my device other than use it! Maybe Sony have addressed it since (mine was bought in January) but I doubt it....
i too have this problem!
i bought it off eBay though so i don't have proof of purchase for warrenty!
anybody know whether Sony ericsson UK accept xperia warrenty without proof of purchase?
i know someone i think in america got it repaired under warrenty without proof of purchase!
Hmm I'll give SE a call tomorrow
ive just sent my xperia off today in the UK but with the proof of purchase from o2, I believe it to be a hardware problem. However i would certainly see if you can blag it somehow to get it fixed, its obviously a problem from the manufacturer and we dont pay all this money for these malfunctioning products without some sort of decent warrenty!
unfortunately i couldnt get it fixed myself so i sent it to SE for repair.
i have the x1a (us version) and just called the xperia hotline and i sent it in. they didnt ask me for proof of purchase. i have already sent my xperia once before to repair the cracks in the body and keyboard.
im surprised as to how defective it is from normal usage. it seems very sturdy at first. i guess its also because i have never kept a phone for that long. i usually switch every two months.
well the guy i bought it off on ebay seems willing to help and is looking for the proof, if he can't find it then i'll just send it off anyway and cross my fingers!
worst comes to worst i'm 10£ short and i need to buy a new ribbon cable
@bigneeker
u switch every two months! my god you must be rich!
man the same exact thing happened to me today as well. first problems were when sliding out the keyboard to text someone and trying to press the send key during landscape display which wasn't registering so i had to close phone up to hit send. then later as u open the phone into landscape the screen was no longer responsive in that display.
then came the black screen when opened but if u hit the power button on during with the phone opened the picture would come out. now finally my phone has no image at all with the phone opened and can only work in portrait mode
i've had my x1 for about 10 months now so its still under warranty but man am i seriously disappointed with this. most likely they'll replace my ribbon with same cheap one and have to deal with this problem again in a couple of months.
same as above has just started happening to me too!
with mine though whenever i slide the keyboard out and it dosent work, when i slide back in it messes up all the screen alignment in portrait mode.
this fantastic phone is starting to get on my...s now!
I have exactly the same problem too! It started the day after the warranty expired! What should I do???
had the same issue, after a week t stopped workng at all. And they refues my waranty... And it would vost me 180EURov lol a ripoff!
So i took t home and dssasembled it, gues what, ribbon cable s halfway cut! Glue ddnt help, so i ordered nw one, 30EUR or 50$ from http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-xperia-c-28_638.html Thought i could also buy from ebay, same price.
Now i also ordered new housng from ebay, and this time i have and idea. i wll glue some small blockade inside sliding mechanizm. So it will prevent from cable being stretched too much when open/close.
Anyway, why THE **** DID SE NOT MAKE RIBBON CABLE LONGER!!!
Or w8, it was HTC, they did this on purpuse for SE?
Deffectve ribbon
To me this didn't occure yet, I hope will be later than sooner, but I wonder ... SE X2 has a different ribbon?
Maybe HTC is not as (market) neutral as they might expect it? )
the HTC direct product , like TouchPro, TouchPro2 have a same problem or not ?
Hope Yet
I just got the same issue, had my phone 1 year and 2 months now.
If you are in the EU your one year warranty becomes 2years on electronics regardless if the manufactures warranty is 1 year. Just so you know. Contact you local citizens advise bureau to find out or goggle it. Hope that helps.
the warrenty on the x1 (in the uk anyway) is 2years!
also! a warning about ebay housing, they are pretty much all fakes! and cause more trouble then they're worth! i pretty much wore out the screws whne i used one, had to literaly cut my phone apart from it!
cnn.cn is THE place to buy!

Uh oh... I disassembled my xperia to change the silver to black... I have a feeling my shoddy reassembly didn't help as after I did it slowly have some serious problems began. My reception/gps is terrible, cuts in and out all the time, my hinge is extremely loose and wobbly especially once in landscape mode, battery life has gotten a lot worse, and now as per the rest of us my landscape is pretty much useless with no touchscreen response also the screen alignment once back in portrait is way off.
I'm pretty sure I'm in for a similar surprise once i disassemble my poor phone again. Anyways any update on the new ribbon? I'm currently looking for a replacement tho even tho I really love my X1 for the most part, its hard finding a phone with similar/better features in my price range.
Hello overyone, I just bought off a old x1 which had the same problem. It was my 3rd phone. And i have replaced many screens. For now my conclusion is its the flex cable between the screen/buttons/touchscreen etc.....
you can buy them on ebay for about 28 dollars(incl. shipping)
Most of the time it is not the screen/touchscreen. Its the flex cable connecting it all.
see picture of the part i mean:
(search google for: "x1 flex cable"
Before opening phone: please be sure how to open it. Because it maybe very tricky to open if you are unexperienced!!!!!
Hope it help y'all

Touch Screen problems? Hardware issues?

So my touch all of a sudden stoped working. I tried everything including hard resseting. Then I noticed that at the top left corner, the screen was sticking out or something, it was much higher tan the surounding metal. When I tried peelinig it back I saw the underneath plastic of the diamond. So I stopped peeling it, and for some reason now, my screen is responsive again. Did my digitizer stick to my screen and unpeeling it unstuck or something. I'm worried I have a hardware problem I temporarily fixed. The top left area where the word htc is, is kind of wrinkly and not flat and taught like the rest of the screen like a piece of plasticd is on top of it or the plastic is disorted. It was that way before I tried to peel it back.
Definitely collapsed layers of the digitizer.
Does this mean I should get my digitizer replaced? I have the UK Diamond 2 so I am not sure where I would send it to get it fixed. Is this problem likely to happen again? And i'm a bit confused on why you said collapsed layers, does the digitizer have multiple layers?
it probs would be best to contact HTC UK customer services on their website. they will give you more information
how long have you had it, if less than a year then it may come under a warranty repair
but don't quote me on that.

Search the forum for 'digitizer' or 'newton rings' to learn more about the issue. It does seem to be a common problem with the Topaz, but not so much with the Pure. Yes, it has 2 layers. There are also detailed replacement instructions if you search.
If I leave the problem as is since its working now, will the problem return or get worse? I bought it on ebay so I'm not sure I am under warrenty and the previous owner I believe got it in May 2009 so its been over a year. Also I did not have oily rings or anything visible on my screen when I had the problem. So I'm guessing my digitizer pieces got stuck as opposed to having Newton rings. Also could I send it somewhere besides HTC UK to get the digitizer fixed. I'm iff about replacing it myself especialy since it seems to require soldering.
