So I have been using my lovely N1 with AT&T from the day I got it. Just popped my old SIM card into the N1, added a $15/month unlimited data plan and presto blamo it worked like a charm.
So last night I get a text from AT&T telling me I need to add a "smartphone" plan to my account. How do they know I have a smartphone? Anyway, I ignored it. Just now, I got a message from them telling me my phone plan had been upgraded to the minimum plan...$30/month. I am now paying $15 more a month for absolutely nothing.
Buh-bye AT&T...going carrier shopping. Good thing I am not in contract! That's what using unlocked phones will let you do!
Same issue. I guess they figured out how to find nexus ones on their network.
My thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630660
Anyone know how they do this ? can we hide the phone model from them ?
you imei is a digital trace. once you make one phone call or text from the phone, thats called billable airtime! your imei comes up in their system as what ever phone you are using in this case the nexus one. this is the same way tmobile knows how people are using a iphone

Frankly, if a lousy dollar a day for data is too expensive, maybe you shouldn't have a smartphone in the first place.

Good thing your first post here is a bash.
About paying for data and not paying for data:
For me I don't pay for any data on any phone. Why? No 3G, and I mainly use WiFi.
P.S I totally agree with "A fool and his money are soon parted"
AND to top things off, if someone was saving for a nice and shiny phone, this (and you) have no right to tell them "if you can't waste money, you cant have a new phone" saving for a 530$ phone and paying ONE TIME is far different than paying 30$ a month for data, when it isn't even used or isn't to its full capacity.

Totally untrue. You can use this phone with a standard voice with T-Mob, how do I know? I do it.
The real problem is not the price but rather the fact AT&T charges you $30 a month when you can't even use their 3G on your Nexus One.

I did this with my tp2 also. I didn't think it was worth paying $30 a month to use when I have wifi pretty much every where I go. I like the nexus a lot better, so I pay for the data for now. However, I rarely use the data, so it is basically $25 down the drain every month.
It's not a matter of being able to afford it, flametards... It's about perceived value for services received.

If you're wasting that $25 that's your own fault. Do what you did before if it worked fine.
The point is AT&T or T-Mobile can charge whatever they like. No amount of complaining in here is going to help that. If you want to have a moan the moan on their forums where they might actually see it. ( http://forums.wireless.att.com/ && http://forums.t-mobile.com/ )
Your complaints about carrier pricing are nothing to do with the Nexus One.

Bingo. This just happend to me yesterday as well. I guess AT&T figured out how to detect the Nexus. I've been paying the full data price for years, just switched it over 2 weeks ago because of this phone. It is pretty weak since its only on edge...
I definitely wouldnt be down for paying 30 a month for Edge, that sucks. Also, why do people have to go trash every thread like it was a personal attack on them, if you dont like his post then dont read it, this is a discussion forum. It is relevant to this forum since ATT only just discovered they can label the N1(EDGE) a "smartphone" and charge more money. Other phones with web support still get the EDGE pricing.

Did you see me complaining? No, you did not. I was simply saying it was possible to not have a data plan at all which was contrary to what you said, incorrectly, earlier. "If you don't want to pay, change network. You'll still have to pay so get over it."
Advice: if you want the thread to die quit posting in it. By the way, AT&T changing their policy on the nexus pertains to the nexus in general. Hence this thread's location in Nexus One General sub-forum.

However since these guys can't use 3g, they should get SOME discount from the normal price.

Yes they work. Alot of people on here have done it. The only way you can get it done for free is thru T-Mobile. Even tho you bought the phone second hand they should still do it for you, but being your in Australia I don't know if there policy is different. You can try to find someone you trust in the US and give them you IMEI and have them call it in for you.
Good luck with tmo, I tried everything even when I was a customer and they said wait 90 days. After I cancelled with them and asked again they said you have to be a customer with G1 data plan for 90 days. Other then that there is NO NO NO free way to unlock.
I have unlocked my girls G1 and my own with www.unlock-tmobileg1.com for $24 bucks and I got the code in about 20 minutes, another member here asked me what to use and I pointed him to them, he got his code in 12 minutes. I heard you can do it on ebay for a little less but I never tried it so I can't say for sure.

Yea I don't think that would work for me considering I had that line for about 3 years. And I won't get rid of my other line with the G1 so they would be like you get service on one phone but not the other.
Tell them your son is in a boarding school out in the boondocks and he gets no service there. Just use the coverage map and see what area closest to you get little to no service. They will take 3 or 4 days to check it out then you can get out with no ETF. Gotta be crafty with your lies, just cuz you had service for 3 years doesn't matter much since now your son is going to school in a area without any reception, with you being a long standing customer AND having other lines they would rather keep you happy and lose 1 lines then risk losing you completely.

So, being an Android nut, I've obviously drooled over moving to the N1 from my G1. However, the pricing is lame (as it always will be more expensive to current customers...) and eventhough I've been a customer for 10 years, I'm not going to get less than their current pricing.
Now the interesting part: Family is ditching their cell carrier, and father wants a G1 after having witnessed my G1s sheer awesomeness thanks to Cyanogen. So, would I run into any weird problems from him getting pricing for new customer on the N1, and me tossing him my G1 and swapping sims? Any difference in data plan? Are there any device id sweeps like what rogers did to identify people without the 911 patch?
Or would this simply be a convenient and brilliant solution for each of us, as we both get what we want?
Thanks all!

No clue, huh? His current service ends in a few days, sure would be nice to have an answer!
yeah that's a legit plan. no problems.
I did this with my G1 when the mytouch came out. But FYI, they will find out that your dad is using a G1 on an N1 plan based on IMEI. But they don't seem to care.
I did a similar thing when the HD2 was released. At the time I had a Touch Pro 2 and opened up a "new line" with TMobile. Once I received the HD2, I swapped the SIMs to use my current number on my new device ... plan just carried over to the new device and no other configuration required.
Then I traded the HD2 for an N1, swapped the cards again with no issues.
I think you will be fine.
Thank you much, figured as much, just better to make sure!

Not at all. They don't care as long as they make a sale or money. If you dad is trying to get a new line. Then just use his new customer credit and get and N1, then toss him the G1. Toss your sim and your good to go.
Thats the one good thing i love about GSM, you get buy a phone from someone or online and just pop your sim in and start using it.
My brother wanted an Iphone but still had 1 year left on his contract. My mom was up for a renewal. We went to the store, told them that my brother wants to use my moms renewal to get himself an iphone. They said no problems. To them, she just renewed her line for another 2 years and you guys swapped phones.
The only downside is, Does your dad know or care that your screwing him out of a BADASS phone? LOL
Might want to read the terms of service regarding the N1 my roommate found that for a certain amount of time you cannot swap the sim card otherwise you will be assessed that $350 charge. Google states it must remain on the number that was associated with the phone at the time of purchase.
Haha, yes, dad doesn't like the idea of a virtual keyboard. So he's fine being screwed out of it
As for that contract, happen to have a link? I just (painfully) read the Tmo ones on the order site and didn't see anything, but none of the ones I found were N1 specific

yep, found the N1 agreement that was brought up, and its the usual no plan modification agreement thing. Perfect! Certainly not worried about paying tmo's rates.
There is no defference between the N1 data plan, and the G1 data plan. They are both on the same Android Data Plan. Doesn't matter what android device you use. You could use a diff android phone every day and not had any negative effect. It is all legal.
Hey Hummeroid,
I was thinking that you should do this quickly before the mytouch slide comes out. your dad might like it more than the g1. then you'd be screwed. just watching your back buddy
Ok. I have been around the ring in the crappiest circus on earth (known as ATT ), and they're driving me nuts. Thought maybe some of the brilliant minds here might know a way to help me out!
Story:
My wife has a blackberry with a grandfathered unlimited plan. I called ATT Customer Service before I bought my Captivate asking if I could have her plan for my phone and give her the $15, 200 MB plan. Expecting no, I was surprised when the guy on the other end said sure no problem! I asked him literally a good ten times in as many different ways as possible to ensure that he knew what I was asking. No big deal apparently. Captivate was purchased and all of the sudden the plan can't be switched anymore and it doesnt matter what the first guy told me; it physically cant be done (or so I was told)! Called today (furious, after yet another data plan overage despite wifi usage) and was given the same run around, but this time I started getting angry. This guy tells me that it couldn't be done, can't be done, physically impossible! Then he goes on to tell me that if the first guy had made a note on my account they could do it, but since he didn't, they can't. So it's not physically impossible anymore?? Immediately after I mentioned the words "Sprint", "Verizon", and "leaving" he said, "Let me get my supervisor for you" (because before it was impossible to get the supervisor despite my asking ). Supervisor gets on the phone and says it is physically impossible to switch the plan even if it's on the same account. Can't do it; no way! Doesn't matter what any of the lowly CS reps said! I asked her if she cared at all about keeping me as a customer and her answer was "Unfortunately, I can't solve the problem you have today" (basically, no).
This is a joke and despite countless calls to Customer Service (if it can be called that....), I have gotten no where.
Any advice on how I can get out of this mess? I'm super tempted to just leave ATT.
Sorry for the long post/rant
It depends on the plan. I moved my iPhone unlimited plan over, but it was a smartphone plan so it was still the $30 month type plan.
The blackberry plans originally were not really anticipating web browsing as early BB were just sort of WAP browsers. If it was one of these "unlimited" plans that was really just for email, then they may not let you switch.
Try walking into a store and talking to a manager. Find out why iPhone unlimited plans are moved over (even though the plan has a different name and is only for iPhone) and still stay unlimited, but the BB is not.
How much were you paying for your BB unlimited plan?
My wife has the Bold 9000 and has had the plan for about a year and a half now. We are paying 30 dollars for that plan.
I actually have gone in store. Not sure if I spoke to a manager or not, but the guy I asked said no at first, but then wasn't sure so he asked another guy. The other guy just sorta rolled his eyes and said no. ha
Think I should just go and ask for the manager immediately?
I think the problem is you're trying to move a data plan from one phone number to another. I've never known them to do that, only the line that was originally grandfathered in keeps it. Idiot customer service reps don't know what they're talking about half the time anyways.
Ya. I told the supervisor she really needed to train her underlings as three of them told me it was possible. She didn't care. I'm so fed up with ATT.
Thats messed up. Generally when one of my co workers said something regarding a product and I say something different I have to follow and give them that item. Of course we have to check a few thing s out. And if we can't we can replace or give something to make it right
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I know. What's really irking me right now is that the supervisor didn't even offer to do ANYTHING to amend the situation. I realize my one plan doesn't decide the success of their company, but I really would just like a little customer service.
I hear that EVO calling my name in the distance lol
Aren't most customer calls recorded? If so, can they pull your call and find out that the first guy really did tell you that? Even though they're saying they can't transfer the plan, they can at least acknowledge his error and at least clarify that you're not lying to them and just trying to pull one over on them. Maybe if there's proof that there was an error on their part, they can work something out with you.
That's not a bad idea. I may try that, although I have a feeling that they do not store recorded calls under personal profiles and have no way of tracing certain calls back to certain users.
Maybe I'm wrong. No harm in trying.

I used to work for a financial company and they recorded all of the incoming service calls. They were linked to specific accounts so that they can be pulled in case errors were made. Obviously I probably can't compare a financial company to a telecommunications service line but you're right, no harm in trying.
my understanding is this
if you have the unlimited plan on your line ... and change between smart phones you still keep it ...
but if you have other lines that do not have the unlimited (smart phone) plan ... there is no way for it to be added to those lines ... even if you want it just moved over from one line to another ...
its like an old flag ... and that flag does not exists on the accounts any more but if you still have the flag you get to keep it ...
Ya. I sorta realized that trying to get them to actually change it was a losing battle. It was just the fact that no one seemed to care at all what I was told, even when I was transferred to the supervisor and her "underling" had just got through telling me it was possible. Whatever. I guess I'll be getting the 2 gig plan. Better than going over THREE times in one month....

Wow, you must be doing some serious stuff with your phone. I use mine just as much as my laptop, and I don't go over. I have the 200mb plan and I haven't even come close to going over
That's actually one reason I was getting so angry. I'm on wifi about 90% of the time. While I am on it a lot, most (almost all) of the data I'm using is coming over wifi networks, so I shouldn't be going over. They said that that was a device issue so there was nothing they could do and I would have to take it in store for a possible exchange.
If enough people are interested, I had an idea that DFW XDA members all return their Vivids at the same time for a mass return at the AT&T HQ store in order to make a statement. This is the heart of their operation. We can discuss this, but what I and others came up with so far is:

Yea if your going to go with a gs2 Definitely get the OG. The Skyrocket has issues with screen resolution and such. As far as the LG Nitro goes I think that is up in the air considering it is going to have a full 720p screen. I am actually slightly leaning toward the LG just because of that but I still need to research it a little bit more.
Yes. I am wondering the same. Though I'm not sure if it will be rooted... New to thus android world. Also, I'm not sure how the devs will take the phone. I heard the lg ui is like touchwiz but retarded... Not meaning to insult. I'm hoping someone will do a good overview of the nitro by sunday

IMO, both of those UIs are on par with excrement. On day 1 of owning my Captivate, I switched launchers. Even on Froyo/GB, I could not put up with it and just went full AOSP launcher-wise. If the LG launcher is the same, I know that I won't like it for sure.
Sense is the only aftermarket UI that I like, hence why I ended up with this phone.
EDIT: Also, what's even the point of this? Sending a message to AT&T about this phone would do nothing with you guys mass-returning it. After the event, you wouldn't even care what happened to this device's development life anyway, while you guys all go for Nitros or Skyrockets or whatever phone fits your fancy.
Occupy AT&T....not a chance
You mad cause you have no root...?
Root doesn't allow you to do much anyway other than to either overclock your CPU, make a complete backup of your rom, flash any random rom you want etc...
All the phones have the same CPU chipset, you're just paying for different screen resolutions and plastic shells that cover everything
Samsung couldn't even use its custom CPU because it lacked the ability to incorporate LTE technology, so they chose the Snapdragon S3 APQ8060 dual-core CPU...the same one in the Vivid, and the same one is in the LG Nitro.
Its the only CPU capable of allowing AT&T's 4gLTE service to run smooth for the end user
So go ahead, boycott the Vivid, youre only benefit is a screen with a smaller resolution or a screen with a higher resolution, plus youre still gonna pay the difference plus a $35 restocking fee is applicable...
It seems to me that the problem isn't the Vivid. It's AT&T. If you really want to make a statement then keep this amazing phone, cancel your contracts with AT&T, and allow the devs to continue working on unlocking and fully rooting the device which you know they will. This will do two things. One: send a message to AT&T that will cost them BIG-TIME. Two:Once the devs see how many people are willing to SACRIFICE their wireless mobility for such a great device, they may release a carrier unlock and varying radio support for the different competitors for the vivid. There are some major competitors that offer much better rates and data packages with full LTE support that DON'T lock bootloaders.
It seems silly to put such a serious and damaging halt to great development just because you're unwilling to sever the head of the snake, whereas mass returns will accomplish nothing. Well, not nothing, but if you REALLY want this problem addressed, make AT&T pay with the sudden loss of income. HTC isn't the problem. The Vivid isn't the problem. Big corporations have insurance policies to protect them when there's a problem with inventory/product defects/returns etc. But losing customers.. That just plain sucks for ANY business. Hit them where it hurts. The Next big awesome phone you want will just be locked up tight as well unless you send a CLEAR message they CAN'T ignore.
The Vivid counterpart in Canada (Raider) has already had great roms and kernels that work and are supported/updated every couple of days. I love this phone more and more and would switch carriers in a heartbeat if the company I pay my hard earned money to EVERY Month wasn't treating me like a VALUED customer. AT&T KNOWS what they're doing. They KNOW that what they're continuuing to do is WRONG. But they aren't listening becuase the customers aren't willing to lose they're precious contract they've worked so hard for.
Yes, it means going without the ability to use your nice phone for a little while. Yes it will suck having NO cellphone at all with all it's nice features at your disposal and whim. Maybe getting a junker from a better provider and waiting for the devs is asking too much.
Either that or stop and realize you've had your phone for ONE month. Forget everything I've said about teaching your carrier a lesson, and show some support for xda (maybe a little faith and gratitude as well) because they LOVE tinkering with HTC's products. I wonder sometimes if there would even BE an XDA team without HTC. Be patient, or teach them a REAL lesson in customer service. The alternative is YOU losing out, and feeling all proud and happy for giving up something you once loved. But then again nobody wants to admit they're ACTUALLY PAYING AT&T to treat us like prisoners. Stripping you of your right to DO WITH YOUR PROPERTY THAT WHICH YOU FEEL LIKE DOING.
While we're at it let's all go buy REALLY nice houses where we're not allowed to decorate, hang pictures, change the layout of the livingroom, or park our cars anywhere near.
Been following these forums since the beginning of this week when I ordered the phone through amazon. Now that it has finally shipped today after being backordered, I'm seeing this
and returning this, which I got for a penny, would mean I would have to pay full price for the phone I exchange for, correct?
I wish the morale in this forum didn't seem like it is dying away, but I understand that many of us are almost at the 30 day limit on exchanges and two years is an awful long time to go without an unlocked bootloader.
My first htc phone, after going through LG and blackberry.... which might be exchanged like all of yours....
I think a lot of you are missing the point. This is not just about the bootloader. everyone's reasons are different so I can only share my own. So if you have been paying attention to this forum at all you might get that. Personally my reasons are in no particular order: Carrier IQ, locked bootloader..not just because of development, but because you can't get rid of Carrier IQ while the bootloader is locked, being throttled by AT&T with normal use only halfway through my Billing cycle at only 3.6gb while I still have to pay full price even though I'm on an unlimited plan, their lack of answers, their silencing of our voices on forums, and those are just a few reasons. This is beyond "you mad about no root". And if you think I won't care about what happens after this, then you really haven't been paying attention. My plan is to import a phone or stick with my streak until I figure out a better option. If I use a phone they don't have on file for me, then I can at least not be throttled or be affected directly by Carrier IQ.
This idea isn't JUST for vivid users, and no one is occupying anything. This is for the returns to occur in one fell swoop so they can feel the hit they have caused themselves. As paying customers, most of us are tired of being treated like this. If you're having trouble understanding why and how this would matter, then you haven't been following this forum.

everyone Ganged up on me last time when I politely said 'bye bye vivid' not even a week back. Even my thread got deleted and I can't find it on vivid general section anymore.
I think it's worth sticking to Samsung for a while. Eventhough I love sense interface so much, I enjoy having good debloated ROMs that give me full potential of the phone.
I'm back to galaxy s2 and it's totally worth it.

The Carrier IQ situation will allow you to break free of your contract, not happy with AT&T, maybe it wasnt for you, not the first time a subscriber switched carriers. AT&T just got LTE when other carriers had it for longer and unthrottled, what stopped you from leaving then?, I have a bandwidth monitor on my vivid, the HTC IQ AGENT ( Carrier IQ ) doesn't take up gigs of your data plan, matter of fact it takes less than 1/10th of a MB. It is very freaky what this app is capable of and was pretty shocked when I saw the youtube vid. Did you know that uploads are also counted as well!. AT&T will soon realize that 4GB just isnt enough to satisfy customers.
Propose this, you have the ability to break free of your contract pretty soon cause of this whole CIQ debacle, if you want AT&T to keep your business, tell them you want unthrottled unlimited data on your grandfathered plan, they cant do that then just leave without penalty.
Its not HTC's fault AT&T has some weird business practices and contract practices that show up in forums / media from time to time, returning any carriers devices hurts sales and manufacturer reputation. Take the fight where it belongs, tell it to Al Franken..lol

I'm in the same boat as you got mine for .01 and it's a nice phone. The only thing I'd like to do is remove some bloat apps, but honestly who cares. Everything I've thrown at it works way better than it did on my EVO 4g on Sprint.
Its not like I have unlimited data with ATT and I pay for 4gig of data.
I'm keeping mine root or no root.
EDIT: I misread an article that I thought had said that HTC promised it unlocked in a month. Either way, you people are so impatient.
EDIT2: If this is for Carrier IQ then I totally agree, but for a phone that doesn't have an unlocked bootloader That's just stupid.
If you guys are seriously going to "occupy AT&T" then you are idiots. A few hundred people won't make that huge of a difference when they have nearly 100 Million customers.
In the end you're only hurting the development community because when it does get unlocked everyone would have left.
That's my $0.02. Good day.

You raise some really good points. Though I do feel HTC does have some degree of responsibility because it's on their branded product with their name attached to the actual app.

I've been rooting Sammy phones for a couple years, and jumped ship to the Nexus 6. I found the Nexus Root Toolkit to be the best way. Check it out.

This.
My standard message:
There's nothing wrong with toolkits themselves. They can be great, useful tools. We're not even saying they cause bricks either - though users not understanding things *could* cause one...Toolkits are necessary on many devices, but on Nexuses, the manual steps are very easy.
Ultimately it's fine to use a toolkit but *only* if you already know how to do all these steps manually. If you do not know how to do that then you should do it manually so that you do know. The reason for this is if something goes wrong further down the line, we don't want to have to teach you the basics AND tell you what you need to do to fix whatever issue you have. We just want to do the latter - because teaching someone the basics that they should already know when they are frustrated and panicking is not a good set of circumstances to be teaching under and it is frustrating to us more than you and putting us in that situation is a little bit selfish

Well being that the xda app will not let me start a new thread for some reason I guess I will ask it here since I started this thread on my computer. Does anybody with T Mobile on this phone or any phone I guess experience delayed text messages still? I'm going to be switching from Verizon and I hope I'm not going to kick myself in the ass for this. I had an unlimited data plan but just got in over my head with two edged plans and very expensive devices was paying over $250 a month.

Yes agreed, don't use toolkits unless you know how to fix things if something goes wrong or you f it up. Adb isn't that hard if you practice a little and there are many articles that will help with learning it.

We have two Unlimited lines and one 2GB line (i.e., kids are growing up). I spoke in the store with a Salesperson who claimed he could get me a discount on a family package with 6GB shared for about $10 less/month than my current plans. Plus, I'd be able to purchase subsidized phones for the two (previously) unlimited lines, again. I wanted to check this out myself online, so looked later that evening and couldn't find what he offered.
The next day, I called Verizon and a Salesperson couldn't reproduce that deal, only giving me the $20+ greater cost that I'd already calculated using their online plan comparison tool.
So, it might depend on who you talk to (or, if your request is even reasonable).
Friends and relatives helped me understand that coverage seems good for all the major carriers in our area - I'd probably first consider Sprint if our unlimited plans went away and costs went up substantially for very little data/month.

None, and I even had my wife text me just the time on the message of when it sent and it was within seconds I recieved it after she sent it.
