Flashing a base before using kingklick's eclairs? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I installed xkingklick's back 2 stable eclair build (at least tried to) on my G1 using the following method:
Started off using cyanogen's rom (latest version) on my G1 then:
1. Partitioned my sdcard as fat32, 512mb ext3, 96mb swap
2. I wiped my phone
3. Applied the kingklick update.zip (version 1.5)
then rebooted and it just hang at this nexus one (?) 4-colors animated screen (the one with the colored swipes) sometimes it just hangs a little while (giving me the impression that something is happening in the background) but after waiting 40+ minutes I felt like nothing was going to happen.
Do I need to install some kind of baseimage as I did with cyanogenmod? What am I (obviously) doing wrong?

install amon ra's recovery image first
then wipe every partition and repartition the sd card...
wipe data
wipe dalvik
wipe ext3
wipe battery and rotation settings
when partitioning rmr to upgrade ext2 to ext3 after the partitioning...
i missed that in the beginning and phone was being mad slow
hope it helps...
if still the same problem
trying flashing another eclair rom
if it works then the dl copy u have is bad
redownload and check md5s

do you have a new spl?
if not flash a new spl first...
make sure you have the newest radio

Upgrading to Cyanogen - Plz read!

Hey, I just wanted to confirm that I will be taking all of the proper steps in putting CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1. Here's what I will be doing (I'm going to start from complete scratch - figured it would help a bit):
CURRENTLY ON JF1.51 CRB43
-------------------------------
Repartitioning 8GB Class 4 card with 700MB Ext2
Reverting back to RC29 via DREAIMG.nhb
Flashing recovery image in terminal
Installing HardSPL through recovery console
Installing JF1.51 ROM (Heard its smart to do this first)
Installing HTC Radio from http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html
Installing Cyanogen Recovery Console
Flashing CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 ROM
Recovery console: upgrade_fs (EXT2 -> EXT3)
-----------------------
QUESTIONS THAT I HAVE
-----------------------
Will this ROM smoothly support the modified Rosie.apk from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532822 ?
Am I correct in assuming I do not need to install the Haykuro SPL?
Should I use Compcache from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537236 ? I have no experience whatsoever with swap files
Am I correct in assuming that I do not need to manually set up Apps2SD?
And most importantly: DID I MISS ANY CRUCIAL STEPS THAT I WILL REGRET DOWN THE LINE? Dont believe so, but better safe than sorry!!
Thanks every so much!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, I will be using Paragon Partition manager to partition MicroSD card if that makes a difference
you shouldnt have to redo all the steps. just wipe and flash his rom. also to my knowledge rosie will not run on a non-hero rom. you do not need haykuro's spl. i have put cm rom on phones straight from rc-29 with no problems. i do not know how to use paragon, but it is very easy to partition an sdcard through cyanogens 1.3.1 recovery. apps2sd is automatic with his rom. if it feels slow you can use compache but do not have to if you do not feel you need to. if you do want to go through the steps you have listed then you are set. hope i was able to answer some of your questions
Your ext2 partition is really large. 500MB should be well enough.

It sounds like you are coming from a brand new g1. If you already have root i wouldnt go back to RC29. And really dont see a point in installing JF 1.51 if your going to cyanogens. You'll just wipe it off anyways.
1. I suggest installing the Cyan's Recovery image first.
2. Then the newest radio and SPL.
3. Make sure you have adb setup (it makes things way easier)
if you want to run cyanogens i suggest 3 partitions although ive heard you can get by with 2. The 3 partitions are generally fat32, ext2/3/4 (2 or 3 is fine and usually is around 500 MB) and a linux-swap partition which is usually around 32 MB, and whatevers left out of your space on your sd card goes to your fat32.
4. If you want to upgrade from ext2 to ext3 then do the upgrade_fs
5. Use ADB and push over the update file or if you have a SD card reader i think you can do it that way.
6. Boot into recovery and do an alt-w (wipe) and alt-s (apply update).
7. Should be good to go from there.
Now for your questions:
1. No you dont need hykuro's SPL (sorry if i mis-spelled i dont use)
2. I personally do not use compcache and it runs ridiculously fast ( I do use linux swap)
3. As far as steps you may have missed. I believe the suggested advice is radio first then spl.
Lastly: There are guides and links to all the files you need right here on XDA. Use the search function as much as possible and the community will be glad to help out. If you have any questions you can get my contact info out of my profile, ill help as i can (im still pretty new to this).
Disclaimer: I AM NOT RESPONCIBLE FOR ANY BAD ADVICE THAT MAY OR MAY NOT LEAD TO THE BRICKING OF YOUR DEVICE.
Thanks for the replies everyone! Flashing it now, I'll report back on how it runs!
I'll be doing this tomorrow as well. Pretty straightforward.
Its so damned fast!!! lol It really feels like things open before I even push the button sometimes!
Many many thanks Cyanogen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always love a happy ending.
Another happy root user = possible next gen dev!
All I would of recommended was installing his Recovery image 1.31 and running a nandroid backup just incase you want to revert back to your old build.
Done and done
New sig speaks for itself...its ultra sexy (screenshots to follow once I find an old apk)

JF1.5 to Hero query

Hi,
I'm looking at moving from JF1.5 ADP to the Hero release for my G1. I currently use a Class 6 memory card formated to use Apps2SD. I'm also using the latest radio SPL, but not sure which version of recovery image.
Would I be right in thinking I could jump to the recovery image section and continue from there, or would I have to fully wipe my memory card and reformat it before doing this
Just follow the instructions in the thread below to install the recovery image.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3915123
Anytime you go from Hero to a pastry you will have to wipe. From a pastry to Hero you might be ok without a wipe but it's always best if you do.
Always best to wipe...
Do you currently have a swap partition? I believe hero requires all 3 partitions. Fat32, Ext3/4, Swap
Someone correct me please if I am wrong.
Hi managed to do this last night - had to download the hboot spl, as I had different spl but same version number, then had to format cards as only had 2 partitions (1 ext2 and 1 fat32) - so setup as per some instructions for a 8gb card leaving the swap @ 32mb
used the Modaco firmware

Android running VERY slow?

I updated to the 4.1.99
and it is running veryyyyyy slow... even after I upgraded to extension 3.
What can I do to speed it up? (I have already closed all running applications)
or will upgrading to 4.1.999 make it faster?
Help.. really, I feel like I have an 80 year old phone
that is the reason 4.1.999 was released, to fix bugs in 4.1.99. yes, it will be faster, also if you don't have a linux-swap partition, i recommend getting one.
Linux-swap makes just about everything faster.
Uhhmmmm I have linux swap, on my SD and CM 1.4.999 (3 nines) ROM ran so slow that I almost chucked my pone at the wall before NANDroiding. So does anyone have reports of there CM Rom being majorly increased inspeed after upgrading to 1.4.9999 (4 nines)?
999 ran great, and 9999 runs really good. did you ever wipe your rom and run a fix_permissions to clear everything up
I had that problem with 4.1.99 and 4.1.999 till i wiped/factory reset a few times for OCD satisfaction and reformatted (not just wiped) my sdcard. If you aren't super computer savvy, amon_RA's newest recovery image will give you a one click option for formatting and partitioning sd card without knowing or inputing script.
Ya I wiped but I never ran fix_permissions, ill try it.
it took me awhile to get 99999 working i lost root, so i have to start from scratch.

wow 5 nines, what are you doing giving cy a little side funny biz
No funny business thats what i thought it was called
Wipe, wipe, wipe.
Run Swapper with the recommended settings.
Get a class 6 SD.
?????
Profit.
oh, and format your ext2 using Ra's recovery image every flash.
I'm using RAv1.2.0G and can format the ext2 w/o deleting data from my
FAT partition. It's nice and fixes most probs going from ROM to ROM.

[SOLVED; broken SD] ADP1 will not boot with any ext partition present on SD

Hi all,
A couple of days ago i decided to give my phone a completely fresh start, looking back i wish i never did. Here's my problem:
As soon as i create any ext partition on my SD card the phone will not boot past the splash screen. When i remove the partition all is well but i really love APPS2SD so this is not an option for me.
Here's some more info on my setup;
ADP1 (PVT 32B ENG S-OFF)
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA10000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
Running the latest cyanogen's recovery
Here's what i already tried (i know its a long read but please hang in there);
I formatted the SD card using a HTC Magic (as stated on cyanogens wiki that formatting on android 1.6 is preferred). Put signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip and update-cm-4.2.13-signed.zip on the SD and followed instruction to flash both in correct sequence. This works flawlessly, booting up with no issues at all. I then turned the phone off and put the microSD in my PC.
I then proceeded to shrink the FAT32 partition (Ubuntu GParted) to make room for the ext partition but not created this partition just yet for testing purposes. Put the SD card back in the phone and i boots up like a dream (no pun intended) running smooth as ever so the shrunk partition is still working great! Once again turned the phone off and put the SD back in my PC to create the ext partition and that's where the problems begin; as soon as ANY ext partition is present (i tried ext2, ext3 and ext4) the phone will not get past the splash screen!!
As soon as i remove this ext partition all works great once again! So then i figured i'd probably have to flash everything from scratch with the ext partition present but this gives me the same results every single time with ext2/3/4 partition present. I even gave Amon-RA's recovery a try with this same process, and even tried to create the partitions using that. No luck, same results every single time.
Now in the past i always used APPS2SD with a ext2 partition without any problems but now i am unable to just get it back to work!
I have a feeling that something goes all messed up somewhere in creating the ext partition but i just cant put my finger on it where, i've ben on this for 3 days now so any input would be very much appreciated!

Your sd could be going bad.
Which version of Amon_Ra are you using?Try repartitioning your sdcard and try another rom like Super-D thats much faster and see where that gets you.

Thank you for the very fast reply!
I'ver tried repartitioning multiple times with different partition sizes and i used the latest of Amon_RA's work (dream v1.5.2).
I will give Super-D a try just for kicks..
And before i forget, i also tried flashing with the defanged DRC83 base and older versions of cyanogens just to make sure without any luck. I also always double-check the MD5sums on all the files that get on my phone!

Well my friend, your first hunch appears to be correct! I've done some small experiments with the card - copying large files back/forth and checking integrity - and it appears that the card is indeed messed up! That's just one of those things i never seem to come up with myself!
I just came back from the store to buy a new cheap card, and even tho its only a class 2 everything formatted and installed without any problems including the APPS2SD! So i guess ill have to order myself a new card, bummer those things only last a year and a half as it appears, i guess ill just have to keep the receipt and get myself a new one under warranty every now and then......
Thanks a million for pointing me in the right direction!

I had that happen to my 8Gb, had it for about a year i think.
did you use 1.6 or did you format from Amon? Also, is i possible not to load "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip". And just go download everything again from the market? Someone said I don't need that file? Where they trying to brick me?

I just formatted the card in a cardreader using Gparted, a FAT32 partition for the whole size of the card minus space for the EXT and swap partition (in my case 512+32Mb resp.). Don't know if it is mandatory but i also flagged the FAT32 boot and lba and it works brilliant for me!
I indeed used the devphone OTA update, but only do this is you have a ADP1... I guess you could probably mess up a normal G1 with that rom. Just follow instructions! Pick the correct 1.6 base rom for your phone (either defanged or the devphone version), flash it and without a reboot flash the latest cyanogens rom over the base, its all explained quite idiot-proof on cyanogens wiki.

Switching From Cyanogen to Eclair

Hello,
I have a G1. I am not new to the flashing, but I have been with cyanogen mod for a while now. I want to switch to this rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=593102.
I have looked at the requirements. I have the Radio-2.22/19.26I. I am not sure what SPL I have(or even how to check it). I have the RA-dream recovery.
How would I go about putting that rom on?. What do I need to backup? I know there are a lot of guides, but many of them are not clear.
Also how easy would it be to restore to cyanogen mod? What would I have to do?
Thank You!
Cough* okay...If you do not already have Amon-Ra's recovery I suggest you get it, search it up on google, it will make your life a whole lot easier. YOu must also search up a tut on how to install a new recovery if you do not know or have Amon Ra already. Second of all format your sd card through the Amon-Ra recovery(press home+power) and find it in the options(look around with your trackball, press it to enter). Format some of your sd card to swap(64/96mb),ext 2(anythng, but not whole sd card memory) fat32 will be using the remainder. Do a full wipe before flashing the danger spl(refer to next sentence/step).Now that you have all those flash the Danger SPL(look it up on google once again) DO NOT FLASH YOUR RADIO AGAIN. Then flash the eclair rom and your done.
Just a little note, Eclair does not have video drivers, so laggy games and youtube/mp4 videos. Just a little heads up.
EDIT: Backup data on your sd card if it's important as formatting it through amon-ra will delete them all and do not pull out your sd card while in recovery or updating cause it will do some funky stuff to your sd card =P

Alright. Thank you very much. I have already installed the Amon-Ra Recovery, so Im good there. Is the ext2 for apps 2 sd? Or would that be another process?
Also, if I am running cyanogen mod, do I need to do the danger spl? How csn I check what spl I have. I know what radio, but not spl.

ext2 is for apps2sd but I recommend ext3 or if you are bold ext4. If you are on the g1 then the danger spl is needed. To check boot into fastboot (power and back arrow) It is right next to hboot (spl is the hboot). I got links to the danger spl (haykuro spl) and radio in my signature.
With any AOSP eclair right now for g1/32B magics, videos do not work at all and games will be laggy if you can even get that far. So with eclair, no videos or apps that use a lot of eyecandy, and NO GAMES.
