I updated to the 4.1.99
and it is running veryyyyyy slow... even after I upgraded to extension 3.
What can I do to speed it up? (I have already closed all running applications)
or will upgrading to 4.1.999 make it faster?
Help.. really, I feel like I have an 80 year old phone
that is the reason 4.1.999 was released, to fix bugs in 4.1.99. yes, it will be faster, also if you don't have a linux-swap partition, i recommend getting one.
Linux-swap makes just about everything faster.
Uhhmmmm I have linux swap, on my SD and CM 1.4.999 (3 nines) ROM ran so slow that I almost chucked my pone at the wall before NANDroiding. So does anyone have reports of there CM Rom being majorly increased inspeed after upgrading to 1.4.9999 (4 nines)?
999 ran great, and 9999 runs really good. did you ever wipe your rom and run a fix_permissions to clear everything up
I had that problem with 4.1.99 and 4.1.999 till i wiped/factory reset a few times for OCD satisfaction and reformatted (not just wiped) my sdcard. If you aren't super computer savvy, amon_RA's newest recovery image will give you a one click option for formatting and partitioning sd card without knowing or inputing script.
Ya I wiped but I never ran fix_permissions, ill try it.
it took me awhile to get 99999 working i lost root, so i have to start from scratch.

wow 5 nines, what are you doing giving cy a little side funny biz
No funny business thats what i thought it was called
Wipe, wipe, wipe.
Run Swapper with the recommended settings.
Get a class 6 SD.
?????
Profit.
oh, and format your ext2 using Ra's recovery image every flash.
I'm using RAv1.2.0G and can format the ext2 w/o deleting data from my
FAT partition. It's nice and fixes most probs going from ROM to ROM.

I started off with cyanogen 4.0.4, I like it, but it seems to lag a lot when I open/close the screen, when the screen view changes from side to side to up and down. I have a 4gb (I think its class 4) card, and I formated it with like 3.xxgb fat32, then 512mb ext3.
So I decided to format the card and try hero (latest non-experimental version).
I like it better, but everytime I touch something it gives me a TouchFlo force close error. I tried reformatting the card and re wiping/flashing the update, no go. For hero I had 3.xx fat32, 512 ext3, and 32 swap.
For both builds I had cyanogens latest recovery, the latest radio, and the latest spl (hykaro, I think I spelled that wrong lol)
So, am I doing something wrong? My friends g1 has the cyan 4.0.4 build on a 2gb card I believe, and his is smokin fast compared to mine.
Someone help me out, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
At this point I think I wanna keep the hero build, but I need to solve the touchflo issue. If not, ill be fine with cyanogen's, but ill just run the hero theme on it.
Also, if I go with cyanogen, should I run a swap partition or no?
The swap partition really increases the speed of the Rom, Are you running apps2sd?
my suggestion is make a swap partition and set up usernint.sh so you can use both compcache and swap on Cyanogen 4.04. It should speed it up a lot. Link in my signature.

with hero i was, as i understood, it does apps2sd automatically?
with cyanogen 4.0.4, im not sure if i was, if it had to be set up, i may not have been and that might be part of the reason. how do u ensure that im running apps2sd?

ill try that now. should i stick with 4.0.4, or the experimental (which i heard is pretty stable, or am i wrong?)
also, i think i may order an 8gb class 6 like you have linked in your sig, hell for 17 bux, might as well.
and in your sig, what is that "xROM" you have listed after cyanogen? do i need that as well?

To check A2SD is running, check how much free space you have on your ext (Settinds > SD card > Secondary) install a couple of big apps - "Bonsai Blast" is 6MB - and check to see if free space has gone down. It A2SD is working it should have done.
4.04 or 4.1.11.1 doesn't really matter. I had a few acore FC's on 4.11.1.1 so 4.04 is your best bet. Could be my fault for not wiping though.
xROM is just...a ROM basically I believe it's based on CM 4.04 but it's themed up and looks awesome
so is the xROM different than 4.0.4? or am i confused.....lol
anyone have any idea on the issue im having with loading Hero? i just wiped and reloaded, and im still getting TouchFlo force close constantly.
anyone else having this issue?
Wipe your ext partition before wiping and flashing:
Go to Terminal:
Rm -rf /system/sd/*
Reboot recovery
Wipe
Reflash
oh, so when im in recovery, and i do alt+w, that wipes what? i thought it wiped everything? that might be the reason, ill try what you said.
although i even reformatted the card completely, then put hero on it and it still is doing it (randomly)
i had it working just now for bout 5-10 minutes then it started again.
also, when i went to wifi tethering, it says my kernel doesnt support it or something (didnt catch the whole error, ill try to copy it down if i see it again after wiping/reinstalling)
is there any reason to run hero over say....cyanogen 4.0.4 with a hero THEME? what are the advantages to running the actual Hero rom?

Yeah try wiping the whole sd card, not just the fat32 partition. Maybe your sd card is going bad? see if you can borrow another and give it another shot.
If he formats through the terminal app does he have to issue su before the other commands? Its been a while since I did mine sry.
I got Cm 4.04 and it works pretty fast on my 8gb class 4 card. I had some lag issues once I installed a few apps. I guess they didn't agree with the either the rom or the hero theme I have lol. Got rid of them and its back to normal. was the SayMyName and TTS Library....in my case tho. It might just be my phone running out of ram, not to sure tho.
And If Im not mistaken, Apps2sd is automatic on the rom.
i got that command to work, i forgot to SU.
i have an extra 1gb laying here, ill try that to see if it does anything different.
i just ordered an 8gb class 6 so that should be here soon anyways.
whats the difference in running hero, vs cyanogen 4.0.4 with a hero theme?
I'm not sure what the difference is but just to clarify my lag issue..
I have around 20ish apps installed. Everything still works pretty good. I just happen to install an app that must have intergrated itself in the system files or something and slowed and almost locked my phone up. Maybe it was the app maybe it wasnt. After I un installed it, things were back to normal.
From what I've been reading Hero is alower then the normal normal G1 builds. I'll have to try a hero build soon. Goodluck.
yea ive tried 2 different hero builds, i overall think cyanogen's 4.0.4 is what i like best, and ill just run the hero theme, i like the theme alot.
the only thing on that as far as lagging goes, is when i open the screen, it switches to landscape view fine most of the time, but when i close it, probably 7 times out of 10, it will lag when switching back to portrait view. the screen goes blurry when its switching (like when you go to power down the phone), for sometimes 2-3 seconds until it switches. i dont remember this happening when i had the stock software on the phone.
any ideas? im going to try the other SD card in a few minutes here just to test it.
ok so upon further review, it seems to only lag when the screen switches from landscape to portrait when the screen is closed. when you physically change the position of the phone, it takes 2, sometimes 3 seconds to switch the screen view. when opening/closing the screen, it switches very fast, as it did with the stock FW.
is this normal?
is there a way to disable that? i really only like it switching screen view based on if the screen is open, or closed.
if its normal, ill have to live with it
I think this is normal. On the normal stock/1.5 builds, the screen will not switch to landscape while the screen is closed on the home screen. It will only change to landscape when you slide out the screen. Is this the transition your talking about? I think its part of the build or theme, the os has to load up additional settings to force it to go to landscape while the screen is closed. For the most part it seems like the os is trying to figure out what position the gsensor/motion sensor thing is in, before it adjusts itself accordingly. I get the same thing on cm 4.04 and on the on the 4.1 I tried once...
soon I will be trying another 4.1 build, I'll let you know the results. nandroid backup is awsome lol
yea thats what im talkin about. i wish i could have it not switch views when the screen it closed, but oh well
im still stuck between hero and cyanogen. i tried xROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543621) didnt like the layout of that theme.

Note: if you want hero, you MUST have a swap partition. the g1 doesnt have enough ram for hero. you may get forceclosures because the g1 is running out of ram without anything even running. you need a swap of atleast 32mb. jac recommends 64mb and i along with a majority use 96mb swap
you know what, that might be it. i did have a swap partition, but there is a command or something you have to do to make the phone USE the swap parition right? if thats the case, that might very well be why it keeps FC'ing.
i ordered an 8gb class 6 sd card, should i do more than a 96mb swap? or is 96mb plenty?
I just got an A-Data Class 6 4 gig card. I can format 3 partitions, upgrade to ext3, copy update zips and files to it, but it boot loops when i try to load up a new rom (any rom). My old class 2 4 gig card loads everything fine. It even runs the latest king hero really well.
Any ideas?

How did you partition your card?
using parted in console. I've re-done it several times as well.
So no matter what rom you flash your getting a bootloop. Do you have a nandroid?
I do. Using Amon_Ra's 1.2.3
On 2nd thought, do you mean a nandroid of a bootloop instance?

Naw a nandroid of a rom that was working before you started flashing.
unfortunately no. i got partition crazy and removed the fat32 it was on right before i thought "did i back that up?"
With my old class 2, i've been able to get up and running on 4.1.999 and this king hero rom with no troubles.
Can a taco be bad but not bad? like, it tastes good, but it was made with bad ingredeints or a horrible chef.....
It sounds to me like your wiping after flashing.
You wipe data, Wipe ext, fix ext, flash rom.
If you wipe after flashing, or flash without wiping you will always get a boot loop.
The image doesnt run from your sd card, so the only thing that would cause the loop is the data on your phone.
Find a tested and working rom (i suggest either Mligns newest or Kings newest)
Go into recovery and turn on USB.
Move rom to sd card.
Wipe data
Wip EXT and fix
REBOOT INTO RECOVERY
then go to flash any ZIP (if you dont reboot, the rom file will not be seen correctly)
flash the rom
Fix ext again just in case
Reboot and leave the phone alone for a few mnutes.
EVERY phone is different. Some take 2 min some take 10-20 min
But if you have flashed properly, the best way to know is the shimmer on the HTC will continue to flow and not stop.
Sometimes it will fade, sometimes the noti bar will appear for 5 min then boot...
Just have patience and try.
EDIT- You typed while I was typing, It sounds like then maybe that card is bad then. If all works with older card, then the flash may be bad on the newer card. may want to return it unless you have other uses for it.
Just to add a strange twist to this. Just reformatted card so it was all Fat32, wiped, and flashed 4.0.4. Everything went fine. What on an SD card could crash Apps2SD?

Possibly the upgrade from ext2 to ext3. Thats why I like to do mine in Ubuntu. Format the card using linux for a linux phone.
Decided to go a step further and go back to parted and resize fat32 and add a 500mb ext2. Rebooted and it fired up and shows the ext2 in the settings screen.
All that and it's not even Halloween yet. I'm going to try to flash 4.1.11.1 just to see if i can break it again
I'm sending it back. wiped flashed 4.1.11.1. Got to setup screen but everything force closes. com.android.phone, com.google.process.gapps, com.android.setupwizard.
Skipped wizard.

no service connection ever made so no account sync.
time to email newegg and try this again

lol.....you give up quite easily.. those problems arent related to the sd card (they are on your /system partition)
try to reflash your rom and repair ext partitions then fix_permissions in recovery
hmmmm.....got card #2 and it appears to be the same case....boot loops. i can't believe that 2 sd cards would be bad only when it comes to apps2sd.
got adb running on my work pc and uploaded a log of the fail
again, everything boots just fine (just booted king's new 1.0) with my lexar class 2
updated logcat - 1st one was when i couldn't get off of the g1 screen.
this logcat is of the bootloop. any help would be great

You may have to wipe your phone.
blacknightavalon hit it right on the nose. You have to wipe, you already mentioned you didnt backup your phone anyways. The wipe and reinstall of the Rom and advanced launcher should fix your problem. Think of it like a reformat of an operating system of windows. linux or apple on your desktop/laptop.

Increase SWAP to 128. You will see a major difference there but it seems like you had something else configured that you don't recall. Ensure that you wipe the device, dalvik, and ext this time just to get it right.
If you are really wanting to see some speed use THIS ROM. It has everything good about Cyanogen's but is MUCH faster and for me more stable. (Hope that is helpful)
Perhaps its just my phone, but I think 4.2.6 was faster than 4.2.7.1. I'm still running the latest from Cyan, but I do believe it's not as fast. I have a slight delay from Browser to home, but not 8 seconds.... maybe 3?

Great reply... I'm about to try this as well to see how the speed differs from what I have now. My ROM is running well but if I can see improvements I'm willing to try it out.
I don't know if it makes a difference in Cyanogenmod, but a higher class sd card may help. It certainly did for me when I ran a hero ROM using a class 6 sd card, but then again, i don't know if cyanogenmod really needs a fast sd card

Interesting.... can anyone if Increase SWAP to 128 has made Cyanogen faster or not?
Super newb here, not looking to get flamed, and have been searching forums for a couple hours before posting this.
I rooted my phone
Flashed new heroc 1.6.2
Flashed Aloysius 2.1 (Not The Overclocked One)
Wiped Phone
Wipe All SD
Partitioned SD fat32+ext2+swap
Changed Ext2 to Ext3
Rebooted Phone
Phone will not start with the SD Card in it...I've even tried REdoing all of this in various orders...
The farthest I've gotten is getting it to boot up fresh with Aloysius 2.1, but still won't boot with the SD card inside.
FYI: Only reason I wanted to get a custom ROM in first place, is to have Apps2SD, if anyone knows of anything I can do here, or of another ROM to try....I'm down to try anything, just hoping that end result = Working Phone With SD Card, and Apps2SD

By "Wipe All SD" I assume you mean you formatted your SD Card? Can you still get into the recovery menu or is it totally stuck?
If you saved your nandroid backup (you made one... right?) and can get into recovery that is your easiest way back to a working phone... Once you've nandroided back I would try doing a factory wipe, wipe ext and dalvik on the card and flash the new rom and recovery image. I also would recommend you read farther into the Aloysius 2.1 thread, as he states that it does support A2SD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6182764&postcount=19
As for other roms, I'm a fan of Regaw Mod and Fresh, but that's just an opinion
Fresh 2.1.2 Includes A2SD, but you'll need a pretty speedy SD card (aka: not the stock one)
If you read, it boots with no sd card. So he should be able to get into recovery menu. If you cant do it with the sd card in, maybe try loading the card when the phone is in recovery. Or try formatting the card back. It sounds like a problem with apps2sd.
Disclaimer, I am a complete noob but this is what it looks like. did you move your dalvik to the sd?
um, my read/write speeds are TERRIBLE with an adata class 6 sd card, even with the sd card speed boost....
w is about 2.0 or lower(sometimes lucky to 5 but EXTREMELY rare)
read is about 15 or lower(mbs)
and does data2ext2 effect the speed of sdcard?
does data2ext4 have better read speeds?
thanks in advance(using 3/26 gingerbread rom from aosp with stock kernal, and data2ext2)
Ext2 is faster. Make a nand of your setup then I think you should just backup all of your data and format the sd threw your pc/laptop. Then partition yout SD in recovery to 1024 ext2 0swap and rest in fat/system. Also I'd recommend reflashing your recovery. After that
Try the ext2 data2ext. If you need help just pm me. But you should be good after that.
Yea its Me Again With The

Data2ext is going to slow down your normal sdcard read/write speeds, whether it's ext2 or ext4. My phone used to take forever to get past the "mounting sd card" phase of startup until I stopped using data2ext.
While ext4 is slower than ext2, that's for a good reason -- ext4 is journaled, so you see much less of a chance of data loss when using it.
@jasonM-Well must have been your phone or your sd/card. If you have a class 4,6 or 10 16gb sd/card I can't see a gig partition is going to effect it to much. Because mine flew pass the setup. The longest part of it is the typing of the commands and the reboot. It mounts asap and builds the super blocks asap. Its made my phone ridiculously fast.
@op and Jm
When I downloaded the msnbc app from the market " not recommended " it froze my phone so I had to do a battery pull which is a no do with the mod. All I did was reflash the recovery, restore a nand, flash the data2ext zip and all was back to normal. Even when I wipe cache and dev cache again I just reflash the data2ext zip and I'm good. All apps restore. I've never had any market, gps,or download issues at all. Even after I flashed the sd/card tweak it ran along with it fine. I run your kernel "jm" the darkhorse theme the miui camera & weather app, aosp's 3/26, sprint nav, I can over clock to 806 fine and on and on. My point is the data2ext hasn't effected my user experience in a negative way at all its only improved it. As far as data loss as long as you keep a backup of your sd/card you should be fine.
I say read the thread, post some questions to get some feedback and to gain an understanding of what it does, the negative and positive risks and benefits. Then try it out. If you need any help with it and I can, I will. Just pm me. Not you "jm" I know you don't need help lol. That's for the op.
