I downloaded the nomorootfs zip file containing everything to flash android to my phone from the flashable linux and android thread but there is no nbh file or initrd. Do I just put those in there? And I want to use myn's build so can I just reaplace the androidinstall.tar with his? I have no clue what to do and I realy don't want to mess my phone up. I have a sprint touch. Please explain how to do this like your explaining it to an idiot lol thank you
why start a new thread just to ask how to flash android? there are numerous tutorials on how to do this in this very forum. You will probably not get much of an answer to your question because the answers already exist with a little reading. I have found hiccups during this process but nothing a little reading didnt help. sorry to be blunt but this forum is getting out of hand with starting new threads for simple questions. next time ask in myns thread.
I have asked several times but noone ever replies so I figured making a new thread would help. And I've read other forums but I just don't understand them. Sorry

What is the problem, this so called community I've heard about is not much of a community is it.
There's no need for it at all.
Can someone please offer some real advice.
Ok, here is a real advice:
Please read the tutorials.
I have, but the one I am reading shows an old JF1.41 rom, when I looked at the other roms it says things like only for 36b phones ect..... It's confused me a little because tho I am amature techy I am also extra cautious and dont want to brick my phone.
Would I be ok using CyanogenMod [v3.9.7] && Palm Pre theme [1.8] ported for instance
I think the reason people are being a bit hostile is because you posted a question in the development section. That may seem OTT but there are some days when the whole first page of the development section is filled up with questions.
Before you flash a cupcake ROM (cyanogen, JF) you will need the new radio. I'm not entirely sure if you can flash that radio on RC7 or whether you will need to install a custom ROM first (like JF's RC9) so if someone could clear that up that would be useful. It can be found here. Copy that to your SD, name it update.zip and flash. Then you can flash a Cyanogen or any other cupcake ROM. That particular ROM you were talking about sounds like it was ported to the HTC Magic/Sapphire. Only flash ROMs from the dream section.

Hi mate, I wouldnt flash 3.9.7 if you only just rooted your phone, go with the stable v3.6.8.1 first, then use Nandroid recovery to create a backup. Then worse case scenario you can always restore that image if needed.
There's a good reason 3.9.7 is marked as experimental, and there is alot to learn before attempting any Hero roms etc.
If you get stuck with anything feel free to shoot me a PM Im always around and happy to help.
Long time lurker first time poster btw
Thanks guys, I will not post in this section again and sorry to those I have upset, would hve been nice to have been simply told.
Thanks for the help.
lol that was hard as nails

Wow that was by far the hardest groaned I have ever seen in my few months on xda!
People are just tired of everybody posting in devolpment when there is a q and a section, and when there are 20 to 30 new threads that have already been discussed, the devolpers get annoyed. Go with the stable version of cyanogen's rom, flash the new radio image and get yourself the hard spl, not the special, if you see warnings, run very far away. Install the s a lifesaver
ahem...
I wasn't hostile before, attempting to be civil now.
You posted two questions in the development forum. The first was regarding root. There are numerous tutorials available on this forum and even more via a simple google search. I know this because I read them, learned the process inside and out and successfully rooted my phone within the first hour of owning it. So yeah, I made a joke about a hard working mod having to move your thread... no personal attack so whatever.
Your second question was an open ended request for what are basically opinions. There are a number of great custom roms being developed here on XDA and all of them are unique in their own way. Roms like HERO and Cyan's experimental rom are definitely not for newcomers and the threads posted by their developers clearly state the risks involved in attempting to run them. 15 minutes in the dev forum and you could have made an educated decision on your own. One post in Q&A and you would have gotten much friendlier responses but in the end, you'd still have to choose your own adventure.
Let me make one thing clear...
I'm not a dev. I'm an end user who tries to contribute something useful to this forum and learns a whole bunch in the process. I've offered help to many people via PM and replies in threads (as long as the discussion is on-topic) but over time I've come to the realization that simply handing out information instead of forcing you to find it on your own actually does a disservice to not only the forum, but YOU as a user. So hate on us all you want. I think you'll find that following forum rules in the future will make your experience here a happier one, and snarky comments like yours are better left un-submitted.
To answer your question: I started with JF's 1.5 rom and think it was a great way to gain exposure to the world of custom roms and root. A lot has changed since then and things have actually become a lot easier since cyanogen released his recovery image w/ nandroid and tools like switchrom came out. Its now very easy to hop between roms and there are fewer chances you'll screw something up in the process. Personally, I've been sticking with Cyanogen's roms since 3.4.6, and though there have been some bumps in the road I've had very few issues and am currently working with his 3.9 experimental builds.
Hope you get where I'm coming from, good luck to you in the future.
How Do You Build Your Own ROM?
How Do You Sign It?
Any Help Once I Get The Basics Then I Know I Can Help With The Builds Of Hero I Just Need Help How To Get Started..
You Know A Path To The Right Direction..
Thanks..
Search. Someone posted up a tutorial on how to do exactly what you're asking.
Then again, I doubt many people will want to use a ROM made by someone who doesn't think to search on his own in the first place. Probably not the sign of a thorough developer.

Stericson started a thread (use the search function to search for threads started by him) about how to sign files and ROMs... I would start there and you'll probably find information on building ROMs as well.
I would also check the Google developer forums (don't know the URL) for information on building a ROM for Android. You'll need to download and install several items to your computer to create the appropriate environment to build.

Ahh thanks bro! This helps me too I was just looking for something like this. I'll put up sites to this stuff when i find them on here!
I just got a G1 and I rooted it to RC-29.
I'm very new to any of this hacking stuff and I have no idea what to do next. My guess is that I need to update to RC-33 and/or firmware 1.5? Along with installing the multi touch and things like that...?
I've read up on some information and JesusFrekes or something like that used to have a lot of updates for the rooted G1, unfortunately all the download links on his site don't work so I have no idea where to go from here... Can anyone tell me what I should do?
look in androidandme.com or google rc-33 and g1 rooting and stuff, idk
If you have root now, you can flash the newest cyanogen rom. check out the cyanogen thread in dream development. JF isn't updating roms anymore. Without danger/death/haykuro special spl (search it in these forums), and seeing as how you are new to this I suggest cyanogen ROMS are your best bet Also check out www.cyanogenmod.com and the cyanogenmod wiki.

hi there. i highly suggest that you follow previously posted suggestions. as you can see, this is my very first message to post on this forum and i have been a member for over 2 years. i have had my dream/G1 for almost a year now. in that time span, i have gained root access, flashed a couple of haykuro's builds, flashed jesusfreke's ROM, disappeared for awhile, came back, couldn't find jesusfreke anymore. after doing some research, i discovered the genius cyanogen and flashed his ROM, and then another, and then another, until i am finally currently running the 4.2.2 version. i did all of this without knowing a thing about linux and without any hacking or programming skills. i did all of this simply by reading, researching, reading, googling, reading, reading, and more reading. i promise you, everything that you need to know - guides for noobs with step by step instructions - are here in this forum. once you find these guides, try them them out, step by step. if you hit a snag, or something goes wrong, re-read the instructions to make sure you followed them exactly. if you think you did, search for the error that you stumbled upon. i'm going to go out on a limb and say that i'm 100% positive that someone else has had the same problem and it has already been solved and someone else has probably written a guide for the next noob to read once he/she comes across the same error. but he/she just has to find said guide! once you search and find this guide, follow the instructions, if you do not understand something or simply cannot, i mean simply cannot find an answer or help to solve your problem, then i suggest you resort to asking a question. but, only as a last resort.
but, it has been my personal experience that everything i have needed has been either at this forum or found through google search. these developers have not only made me love my phone once again by developing such sweet ROMs, but they even wrote up some very easy to follow guides for the newbies so even we can enjoy them too!
so: research, read, follow instructions exactly as they say, only ask questions if you seriously cannot find the answer after doing some serious serious research, then proceed to flash your phone. hell...if this math lovin' accountant girl here can do it, i'm sure anyone can! but only after hours and hours and pages and pages of reading and researching.
p.s. the very first sticky in this q&a forum shows you what to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679

granted, you did not use any question marks, but had you used correct punctuation, there would be.
Consider the parts of a rom you want to change. THEN look for answers or tutorials regarding those individual pieces. There is no one quide for creating a rom, but the tons of threads with tutorials for individual components that make up a rom will ultimately guide you to everything you could want to do.
i can't remember the exact name for it right now, but there was a thread about this a while back about starting to mess around with making roms. also there is a thread about unpacking and re-packing boot images which will probably some system understanding as well. I personally do not know how to go about making a rom from scratch, but i think they may have something about how to compile the source here or here. its worth a read anyways i guess.
people on here are dicks and hate to see someone wanting to learn something. like really hate it, with a passion.
being insulted from the guy that released a rom and didn't even know that it had to be signed (tested how)
Moved. Enough flaming.
It's like saying how do I build my computer from scratch. What do you really want? A how to guide that somehow already knows which type of ROM you want to cook, what you are planning to do with it, and teaches you how to use linux, java, and android all at the same time?

All wrong sectionry aside, you didn't find a thread or a guide because there isn't one.. It's something you'll kind of figure out when you're ready. It sounds like I'm being a total elitist d*ck, but I'm not. Knowing how to create a rom from scratch is a culmination of knowledge and research over a long time. If someone posted a step-by-step guide it still wouldn't tell you what you need to know.
thanks for the ACTUAL helpful comments guys i'll take a browse thru forums bit more for the stuff i wanna change\edit learn
hey, im sorry but im a total noob at this, but i wanted to find out how to root and load a custom rom onto my cdma hero...i was going to use the universal 1-click root...i would post a link to it, but since im new its restricted...i have 2.1
is this the best way? and once i do that, exactly how do i get the custom roms installed on my hero? also, what is the best/fastest/most reliable rom for the hero?
please exlapin in detail...as i dont know anything really, i just started looking into this the other night...
thanks
Hey, welcome to XDA! When you say "please explain in detail", it turns out that many people have already done this for you. Next time before you post, please use the Search function of this forum, and read the titles of some of the threads here. You can almost always find any answer you are looking for...without having to post a question that has already been answered day after day for hundreds of others before.
