Anyone experience no phone signal after flashing a ROM to your Pure? I got the device two days ago and immediately went to flash it using one of Duttys roms and also from Tess (IV). With both attempts I get no signal bars whatsoever. That being said I get an "H" where the "3G" used to be. I know that some of you have talked about the HSDPA but even though I have been doing this awhile I am stumped as to why I would get no signal bars. As long as HSDPA doesnt result in more charges from my provider I could care less about that. Hope that makes sense and I hope that someone has some information for me!
Thanks!

Hi, yes, I have seen the situation on some ROMs where I get 'no bars', but the phone seems to be operational anyway. My suspicion is that it's a problem with the root software from Microsoft, not the ROM chef, since it goes across ROMs.
3G vs. H has no bearing on the problem. The H just shows that the phone is connecting via the higher-speed data linkup. Some providers charge more for H, others don't. You'd have to check with yours.
Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a way to figure out if AT&T charges extra for the "H" connection speeds?
Also, are there any roms out there that have figured out a way to slightly increase the size of the virtual keyboard for easier typing? Both roms I have used so far have kept the keyboard the same and not sure if there is actually a way to increase the size. Lastly, I am reading up on roms trying to find one that I would like but one piece of information eludes me. Does the rom I am researching support landscape mode in Start and all other aspects? Right now I get landscape in web browsing, email and that is about it. I may be missing something here but thought I would ask for clarification.
A note about the Tess IV rom is that I really loved it. It was super smooth and very fast unlike the shipped rom from AT&T.
I found the original rom to be bulky and slow in responsiveness when moving between features or applications. I am sure that is why others moved away from it as well.
AT&T does not charge extra if you enable HSDPA. This is my second AT$T WM device and I have enabled "H" on both.

How do you enable "H" or force it on?
The type of signal is dependant on whats available in the area you are in. As far as I know you don't force "H" to come on, your phone just accesses the best available signal you allow. If " is it then.....
My att plan is the basic plan with the $30.00 data (unlimited) that is required when you buy it. No charges for "H" access for me.. good god, with the way I use slacker all the time, that would bankrupt me in a week.. lol

I'm using the ENERGY Leo ROM, and notice the same.
Thing is that while H is showing I get no bars and no phone connection. Then the phone automatically switches over to 3G and dials out. This can take up to 10 secs - so, can be annoying!
Could this be a locational thing, as I notice this happening in one location only - perhaps where the signal is not strong enough to utilise the H connection.
Or, is it that H is used for data and 3G only for telephone calls?
H is actually HSDPA and is the 3G data connection. 2G equivalent would be EDGE for example. You will only pick it up if A) Your device supports it, B) Your carrier provides it!!, and C) Your are in a stong enough signal area.
You mention that you flashed to a custom ROM but have you flashed your device to an updated Radio ROM? This is the part of the phone that deals with communications including Voice, Data, WiFi etc. Using a good one makes a world of difference.

Flashing a Radio is the same procedure that you would use for a custom ROM. Of course, many of you may already know all of the above but some people may not!

No, I thought the updated custom ROM would also update the radio.
What is your reccomendation for the radio?
How do I find out radio version I've got?
I dont have any specific useage beyond taking calls, and updating Twitter, weather etc.
What version do you think is best?

Some ROMs do include the radio, such as Dutty's HG 9 & 10 ROMs.
The radio version is usually included in the name of the ROM.
For best radio, it depends on your carrier and location.
To find your current version, soft reset, it is listed at the bottom next to "R" upon booting.

I checked my radio ROM - it was .17.
Just updated the radio to .91 - immediate improvment in access to 3G cellphone signal.
Of course, I need to use it for a couple of days to get an accurate feel for improvement.
BTW. I'm based in the UK.
I've had varying success using different versions but .57 has always been head & shoulders above the rest for me.
As always your mileage may vary

I'm in an area that supposedly has 3G coverage (Portland, Oregon). But...
My Tilt has never connected to the 3G network. I've gone to many areas thoughout the metro area, power cycled my phone (to see if it picked up new towers) but I never get 3G connectivity. The "3G" Icon has never displayed on my Tilt.
I've tried different radios which doesn't make a difference.
Suggestions anyone?
Wow, a local!
I have HSDPA almost everywhere in Portland (fastest 3G standard). Even with it not enabled, I have 3G in most of the metro area, including Vancouver where I live.
What icon is displayed?
I'm actually in Hillsboro, but it may as well be Portland.
Usually the "E" icon, and rarely I get the "H" icon.
I'm not sure what the "H" represents. I think its HSDPA, but I assume thats not 3G or as fast as 3G... and if it is then what's the "3G" icon all about?
HSDPA is what you want to see! It's the fastest version of 3G, and the newest available.
E is Edge, its 2G, not as fast but not horrible... Until Edge Evo comes out.
The data coverage maps from ATT are usually pretty bad. It doesnt have to say 3G for it to be 3G. HSDPA is 3G (the best) as well as other variants.
Do you notice a hit in your download speeds?
hmmmm... how confusing. If HSPDA is 3G. What's the point of the "3G" icon?
At my apartment I only get 1 maybe 2 bars of service if I am lucky so that means that while I am home "E" is the best I can get (or expect). But...
When I am out and about I get the "H" icon occasionally. Is there a good way to test my connection speed?
Yeah it's sort of weird... Here's a breakdown.

I don't particularly like Wikipedia, but this should help. I'm sure there is a program that will test your connection speed, but you can try something simple like connecting and downloading a cab, lets say Google Maps. Then you can run Google Maps and see how fast you get your satellite image up. There is probably a better way but that should show any big differences.
EDIT: I should add that 3G usually denotes a mix or standards available. It's just a generalization, and the fastest will be chosen by your phone (this is how I understand it)
Also, what ROM and radio are you using?
well in the midwest AT&T was having problems with 3G they dont know why but all of a sudden their networks just failed idk if that is what is causing ur problem but i kept on getting an error saying that the phone couldnt connect to wap.cingular.
Thanks for that breakdown. Gives me a much better perspective.
I've tried a couple of the more popular ROMs. But recently I've been using Q-Mobile 1.2 - It's treated me well. I'm still trying to understand why Dutty's roms are so popular. I can't figure out what makes people flock to his ROM's over the others.
I've also tried out some different radio's. None of them seem to make any improvement (while at my apartment) but currently I am using 1.27.15.32 because I am under the impression that it is the newest radio and therefore should somehow be better.
I'm also unsure if I have the correct data connection settings setup after flashing a ROM. From what I am able to find the only thing I need to do is use "wap.cingular" Then I go into advanced settings and input the OpenDNS servers in for the DNS. Do I need to add any other AT&T specific information after flashing. I've read that there is some sort of proxy information needed as well but its not very clear.
Anywho, what settings for data do you use? What Radio, ROM?

Yeah, I read about that. Aparently AT&T has no clue what happened. And to make matters worse there is more data outages today.
But I'm convinced that my issue is unrelated to all that since I've been experiencing these issues way before the data outages.
I'm glad that helped. I use the Stock HTC ROM 1.56.405.5 with Radio 1.27.12.11 (It's packaged with the radio). It's a legit HTC release, which means very little bugs and it's fast. Flash and hard-reset and you are good to go.

Anyways, I've heard good things about the Q-Mobile roms, but I've been so happy with the .11 radio that the HTC stock works great for me. The .11 radio is also packaged in the stock ATT ROM your device shipped with.
When you first boot, it will prompt you to setup data, and for me it gets all the settings automatially and takes about 5 seconds to do it. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you just use the wap.cingular, but in all honestly I've never had to do it. I also am not sure why people go crazy over Dutty ROMS. It's almost blastphemy to say that on this forum, and I really appreciate his hard work but they arnt for me either. I like real fast, not too flashy and super usable (and stable, of course, why I love HTC stock ROM's)
I just looked now, my access point name is isp.cingular. Never bothered with it before.
I'll check up on this thread tomorrow, hope this helps you out!
Please ignore this.
Interesting... You make a good argument about the stock HTC ROM. I'll have to try that and see if reception and data speeds are any better.
Although my Tilt came with radio 1.27.12.17 - I've only had it for a couple of weeks so they may have put a newer radio on it.
As far as ROM's go, I'm just looking for something that I can use as a baseline. I don't like programs cooked in. I'd rather have a clean ROM and install what I want. But, on the other hand I do like how the cooked roms often contain the latest updates baked right in.
I'm off to flash to the HTC Stock ROM. I'll let you know how that goes.
Thanks for your help, it's nice to have a local to bounce things off of
I don't care for everything cooked in either. The HTC Stock is pretty bare-bones. The only thing I would recommend adding is Nadavi's upadted camera, dumped from Polaris...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355587
And of course the Tilt Keyboard Fix...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334911
Also, Youtube and streaming video work out of the box, you don't have to do anything fancy to get GPS working (run GPStest, etc...) and besides that there is not much needed. Any eye candy can be easily added.
BUT, remember to hard-reset after flash! It makes a big difference, at least for me.
Let me know how it goes!

H is faster than standard UMTS, and yes, its HSDPA. You will only see the H while data is being actually sent/received though. When no data is being transferred you will see 3G.

Firstly, let me thank everyone who does all the SUPERB work on this site, developing software, ROMs, and tools that us normal users would otherwise never see...
Here's my problem:
I got a Kaiser with the shipping AT&T ROM on it - I'm in the US.
I wanted to get rid of the bloatware and other crap that AT&T puts on the device, and take it back to an HTC ROM.
The problem is, I can only connect to the EDGE network, and I'm only getting 40-60k transfers - I know that with my Samsung Sync (my previous phone) I was getting 1.3-1.5Mbps using the same site to test (http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed)
Is this a limitation within the HTC ROM? If so, does anyone know if newer HTC ROM's (perhaps even with WM6.1) will fix this problem, or do I HAVE to use an AT&T ROM to access the 3G (HSPDA) network in the US?
Thanks in advance for your time!!!
Do you see the icon 3G and it changes to H once you're accessing the internet? If no, you might want to check if you correctly config the connection.
I myself don't trust http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed when it runs on PIE web browser. I did the benchmark on 2 different types of connection, at&t HSDPA and Verizon FiOS* Wifi, and it comes up nearly the same speed 1.3-1.5Mbps.
*I have 15 Mbps download package.
Yes, it DOES do that (Mr President...lol)
What site do you prefer to test the speed of your 3G connection? I was hoping to use Speedtest.net, but doubt that they support mobile.
So, I guess that you're saying my connection is probably just fine, but that the site is problematic?
Thanks for the quick reply, btw!!
- Mark
I don't pay attention too much on speed. But, there are many ways to confirm that you're connected to 3G network.
If the answer is yes for any question below, then you're 3G.
a. Tethering internet via your PC on "internet sharing" mode and make a call at the same time.
b. Stream any audio broadcast with bitrate above 196Kbps.
Enjoy.
Um, where do you live? Pretty much only the major cities have 3G deployed, and even then, it's no guarantee. I live in Minneapolis where 3G was rolled out last November.

I'm in Pittsburgh - I know for certain that I'm in 3G territory, as I just got the Kaiser a few weeks ago, and before that, was using a Samsung Sync tethered to my laptop, and getting 1.3 - 1.5 MBps....
UPDATE
Must have had a lousy signal where I was trying it before - I tried it again, using the same site, and was getting 500-600k - so I guess it's hitting the 3G network, but for some reason, changing the 3G icon to an H, presumably indicating HSPDA.
All's well...can one of the mod's please lock this thread? Thanks!

Hi everyone,
my data plan covers 3G and also HSDPA......im currently using the JF1.51 and when i use the go online with the device, it only shows the 3G logo....... does cupcake only cover up to 3G instead of HSDPA?
if anyone knows, please tell me, thanks alot....
p.s. i tried the Hero rom last month and after setting the APN, it showed "H" instead of "3G".....does it mean that the Hero rom has "unlocked" the HSDPA function?
thanks alot

The H in Hero is just a custom icon by HTC. All Dreams are capable of HSxPA regardless of whether that icon shows up or not. As for the carrier side, you are most likely on HSDPA. If you are on any T-Mobile network or most Asian networks (Taiwan, Japan, China) they are HSDPA. An easy way to verify is to start a speed test. Any speed higher than 384Kb/s downstream (384Kb/s ~= 48KByte/sec) means you are on HSDPA.
If all that was too complex, just assume you are on HSDPA.
Iconz
I had thesame issue with the Touch Pro on sprint, it only shows the EVDO icon when connecting, however, sprint is even advertising their new 4G network but I have not seen my phone ever go to 3G or above. I thought something was wrong with my phone...
I went to sprint to get it exchanged because I bought the phone for the faster service. I was given a big spill over the offered network on sprint.
Your answer: Basically, some icons are not unlocked in some roms or are not even included depending on your service provider. This being said, you will most likely have to have the custom rom to get this to show up on your phone.
But even if your phone does not show that icon, test it and see if it uses the technology.
- What I did is took my TP to my friend who has the new Iphone 3G and we started the YOUTUBE app and loaded the exact same video. Even though his showed the 3G icon all the time and mine only showed EVDO, my phone brought the video up almost 5 seconds before the Iphone ever did, not to mention the quality of video is so much better.
Ok, I see that I am rambling, I hope that this helps though, however, if I have been informed incorrectly, please someone correct me because I would like the other icons too, just for my aesthetic needs.

Your rom can't give you cdma support, that is hardware related. And the G1 is only on GSM networks not any CDMA's so you might have seen some other type of icon because it is not possible to get EVDO on any G1.

I aint saying I don't believe you, I just know it is impossible to get CDMA on a G1 no matter what rom or dump. What I would assume is it was HSxPA and the rom you used had a dump from the sprint hero. That could explain why you had a EV icon and is most likely what happened. Like the other guy said his touch pro had a EV icon although it was getting 3G, so since you do have a 3G icon and it switched to EV it is probably because the area you were in had HSxPA.
yea that makes sense but wow was it fast..thanx for the input

Go somewhere that has t-mobile 3g coverage. That is the only way to get the speed you inquired about. If it's not in your area yet, be patient. They are doing alot of expansions to their network. If you live in a rather remote area (ex: somewhere that doesn't have EDGE coverage) don't hold your breath. It's gonna be a while.

HSDPA and HSUPA are both 3G telephony protocols in the HSPA family. They are two parts of the same thing. HSDPA (Downlink) provides up to 14 Mbit/s. HSUPA (Uplink) provides up to 5.8 Mbit/s.
btw HSPA (or 3g as US carriers call it) is CDMA. Though different from CDMA2000(EV-DO) which is what you were refering to, UMTS is still CDMA based.
And to those confused about the Icons. 3g and HSPA are two names for the same thing. The icon you see simply depends on what the common name for the technology is in the locale the rom was originally designed for. Google based roms usually show 3g whereas HTC based roms sometimes hav H instead. The only difference is the icon.
as for those with EV icons. They are probably from the samsung galaxy system dump. Not to say it's not out there, but I haven't heard anything about a sprint version of the hero rom surfacing yet.
Ohh I guess I didn't have it right. But I know I have seen something about HSxPA gettin 7.2. Damn 14mbits is insane for a cell, I wish I got that in my area. My DSL is only like 7mbits dl and 1.something upload.
Should get it eventually. I only get 7.2 as well, but t-mobile has the whole 1700 band leased, so we might get lucky over the next few years.
Hello I seem to have a problem and I am hoping someone can help. My phone is rooted running Modaco r20 Desire Rom. Radio is ERE27. I have a strong 3G signal in my town with T-mobile. My problem is that for some reason whenever I use data (internet, online gaming, searching using apps etc) the icon will stay on 3G then switch over to H. Sometimes it will stay on 3G and it will not allow any data. I know about the EDGE to 3G issues. I don't seen to have that issue. Can anyone help and or know why this happens?
Usually, when browsing the internet or anything is being downloaded at all - the 3G icon will switch to H. Really only in custom ROMs though, I don't really believe this happens in the stock ROM.. it's not a bad thing or a problem, at least not for me.
Data doesn't completely shut off for me though.
The "H" means you are achieving an HSDPA connnection of sorts. Stock does not have this icon in it, since HSDPA is a form of 3G and they didn't want people getting confused by it switching from 3G icon to H icon.
HSDPA is faster than basic UMTS, aka "3G"... so it is not a bad thing at all.
No idea why you loose your data connection all together when it switches, since it isn't doing anything other than recognizing you have a faster data connection than basic 3G, nothing is actually changing to cause you to lose your connection since it is still the same connection.

HSDPA is faster than basic UMTS, aka "3G"... so it is not a bad thing at all.
No idea why you loose your data connection all together when it switches, since it isn't doing anything other than recognizing you have a faster data connection than basic 3G, nothing is actually changing to cause you to lose your connection since it is still the same connection.

no it is not...
mine does the same thing... i have to twiddle my thumbs and wait when it switches between UMTS and HSDPA... they are different frequencies just like EDGE is on a different frequency...
I don't think UMTS and HSPA are on different frequencies, the same two frequencies are used (alternating for downlink/uplink) for both, those are 1700mhz and 2100mhz.
For some reason I don't have this problem on Long Island, but when I'm in the city this happens the whole time. Might be something to do with the way the network is configured. Basically whenever data is in use, it just says 3G, but as soon as I browse to a site or actually use data, it switches to H within a second or so. I think a stock ROM would technically be doing the same thing, but it just won't show the actual switch, as it doesn't differentiate between HSPA and UMTS in the top 'taskbar.' Although it would probably show this in the phone status screen under settings.

Sometimes it will stay on 3G and it will not allow any data.

The "3G" to "H" (and back) is a "red herring". If it's "stuck" on 3G when you're trying to do data, it means your handset is having issues communicating in the AWS bands for 3G (2100/1700) and the handset hasn't dropped back to GSM/GPRS/EDGE (1900) yet or is attempting to switch frequencies and the associated towers aren't cooperating with the hand-off or the hand-off is failing.
Cheers,
Kermee

I'm in times square. My phone has never switch to UMTS. Either HSPA or EDGE.
also while it's idle it will only use 3G
it will switch to H to transfer data, then revert to 3G

Ok now that makes sense. Anything I can do to help with the hand-off?

Not that I've found. I have this problem BAD here in Phoenix. I never even bothered with WiFi until I got a Nexus, now I can't live without it. I found that sometimes kicking the phone in and out of Airplane Mode sometimes alleviates it being "stuck".

Which Modaco ROM? If it is Desire, you have to flash the newest radio, and do it after flashing the ROM itself, otherwise you will have major Radio issues... at least that is my, and a fair number of other's, experience.

Yeah its Desire rom. I have radio ERE27 right now
Try upgrading to the newest one, 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2:
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...-online-kitchen-optional-root-insecure-himem/
Make sure you have at least 50% battery before flashing, just download and flash via recovery just like a ROM, do not panic, ever, during the process and do a battery pull, just wait for it to flash, then ask you to reboot, reboot, it will then do the actual radio flashing (you will see a box with arrow screen for a couple minutes) it will reboot on its own into recovery, say "writting" cache with a progress bar for a few seconds. The bar will go away, but the "writting cache" text will not, don't worry it is done, just reboot and then double check it flashed by going to about phone, software, and checking baseband version.
Just remember, can't stress this enough, do not pull your battery at all during this process. And make sure you have at least 50% battery before starting. Flashing a radio is the only way you can brick an N1 right now, and only if you pull the battery during the process, or have a bad download. Speaking of which, I do recommend checking the MD5 sum to make sure it is a good clean download.

Same thing happens with me. I'm in Phoenix myself with T-Mobile and running Cyan 5.0.5.3 with EPE54B and baseband v 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2.
I'll have full bars for 3G and when I goto check the market or anything internet related, the 3G will switch to H and work or stay at 3G and pause with connection error, retry or cancel.
I started having this issue after updating my factory stock radio. Anybody know which one is the stock/default radio IMG is? I'm thinking of downgrading and seeing what happens.

I still can't find the way to set it up using US bands only. Any suggestions?
I'm curious as to what the issues are that seem to be with running the International roms while on ATT? It also seems that the consensus between multiple roms as that you should still choose Intl during the Aroma installer. I can't find any definitive answers on what's wrong with picking ATT and if it's better to pick Intl then why have the option?
Signal indicator strength means nothing to me. It's all relative to me anyways. If 2 bars gives me the same signal strength as 4 bars on a different rom, what difference does it make?

None. AT&T measures their signal quite generously where's the international ROMs don't. We can not flash radios yet so changing ROMs has no real effect on the signal only has an effect on what the systems considers good signal.

Then why the talk about wifi passwords not sticking. Tether not working? I want to know what works and what doesn't for ATT users on International based roms, whether choosing ATT or International during the Aroma setup.

Can't help you there I have a dev unit so none of that applies to me. Read OPs carefully for any ROM and you will find out if you need to do anything special. The phone is new and while the devs have done an amazing job their are still some issues to be ironed out.

I understand that. That's why I asked the question here to open up a discussion for ATT users that have experienced these things. OP of these roms do not go into too much detail about these things.

Well I can tell you this: On trickdroid a ATT user reported not having wifi passwords stick so he reflashed with the ATT option then wifi passwords stuck so then he flashed again (why I don't know) this time international and after that he had the international package flashed and the wifi stuck. :good:
I'm currently running TrickDroid 5.4 on my AT&T HTC One, choosing the international settings.
No issues with wifi passwords not sticking. I haven't tried tethering, tbh, but it's built into my plan so I'm not a good candidate. Signal bars are lower than if I chose the AT&T version, but the actual -dBM signal strength was the exact same. I've noticed no difference in terms of functionality, however, flashing it as international removes the following: the AT&T network identifier in the upper left hand corner when no notifications are present, the NFC icon when it's turned on, and AT&T's unique data icons(i.e. instead of H, you get 4G, instead of LTE, you get 4GLTE).

Thanks. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Seems like the tether issue affects people whether they'r plan includes it or not. I'll have to test for myself on various setups. I rarely tether, but when I do it's because I need to.
