What is the Best Android Phone? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My experience is only with a G1 - what is state of the art these days? I would probably want a real keyboard.
Thanks for any advice.

I think this is all about opinion though, so in my opinion, it would be the Nexus One. If you want to know what might be the best Android phone that hasn't been released yet, I would say the HTC Desire, but again, it's just my opinion.

Neither have a QWERTY keyboard, right? Any thoughts on a phone with a real QWERTY keyboard?

there are none wich are up to date with android 2.1 :<
there is this LG phone but it still runs 1.5, and the x10 mini pro will also only run 1.5
wtb HTC device with keyboard and 2.1!

well theres the droid, but its not htc.
It should be getting 2.1 soon.

wait for the nexus enterprise

I like querty want to see a phone with an actual keyboard too.
The G1 is definitely an awesome phone but can not last forever as newer and better Roms are officially released.
I don't think these companies understand that not everyone wants an all touch screen phone.
Hopeful to see a decent, rootable replacement for the Dream sometime in the near future.

Do you guys think its still worth getting a G1 over a Hero(sprint)/Mytouch/Cliq?

I want to get a G1, then root it so that i can use sense and apps2sd.I know its not the best looking phone but its not all bad, i like the hardware keyboard.Right now i have a samsung instinct(sprint) so im used to on-screen keyboards, but this phone has given me headaches and whatnot..i want to know what you guys think is the best thing to get.
It's just personal prefrence really. The hardware keyboard is the only thing the G1 has over any other android phone out at the moment, the MyTouch/Magic/Sapphire/Ion is the same spec as the G1, just no keyboard. Personally I'd go for the Hero, because I don't use the hardware keybaord much (and HTC IME is awesome!) and it also has 288mb RAM to compared to 192 than all other android phones have (appart from the 32A Magic). Can't really comment on the Cliq, don't really know anything about it.
As far as what's out now and what's comming out in the near future, I'd definately go with the Hero, I remember reading on phandroid that T-Mobile should be getting one and I'm crossing my fingers for that. I've been playing with my G1 for quite a few months now, I'm ready for something new that will likely be able to get android 2.0 and show off some more great things that can be done with the OS
well if i had a choice i would like the cliq just because of the key board.but if i didn't want a keyboard, it would be hero for sure .but i need a keyboard ,i use it all the time ! once the click comes out i think it will have a good strong following !
we don't know of the cliq is rootable yet, and remember were talking about motorola here. Id wait a few months and see where it goes first as far as quality and development. I have both the MT3G and the G1. I like the touch better just because its thinner and nicer looking. It took about a week to get used to the virtual keyboard but like any new phone you get used to it the more you use it. As far as performance its about the same, since both are running the same roms and are set up identical. I haven't used my G1 since to be honest, I really like the MT3G. I don't know much about the hero to comment. If you want a keyboard then id just wait because there are more android phones about to be released real soon.

Maybe they go 2.2
I don't know.
I think HTC don't develop any ROM's.
But we can develop some good ROM's.
Now we have to develop linux Debian .
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the interests you have with our product, the HTC Tattoo. I can understand how important it is to be able to fully utilize your device and be able to have the 2.1 Android Operating System.
Unfortunately, at this time there is no Update to the 2.1 Android Operating System Update. This Update will be sent to your device via email or text message when it is available.

Response I got from HTC.
In other words: this will never happen...
Let's see if FroYo really supports different screen resolutions...this would solve our problems in getting a decent upgrade...
Would HTC tattoo be able to run Froyo?

Don't know anymore, but this information could just be another rumor, so be careful with spreading this info
no

Just wait!
I heard about the HTC Wildfire with QVGA screen coming soon with 2.1 or later

Yeah...Tattoo and Wildfire have all the same exept wilds 384 ram and tattoos 256 and screen is bigger i think like desire's...but same in resolution and thats our hope )

Wildfire is to Desire what the HD Mini is to HD2.
It is smaller, less RAM, lower res screen, slower CPU.
Still looks like it will be a top notch device though!

Resolution is not the problem... that works... the problem is camera and BT... but this is different in wildfire so no go.
If I don't see either a custom 2.1 working ROM (by working I mean everything working), or a RUU for 2.x from HTC, it'll be curtains for my HTC Tattoo. (I'll still build AzusaROM though and test the ROM on it until it bricks).
I'm thinking of getting a Nexus One at the end of the year.

Yeah, I thought so too, because since the Nexus is a Google Phone the new Android versions will be compatible with this phone for a long period of time I assume...
Hope is the best medicine for this sort of situation... Lets see devs at xda are trying hard to get it sorted..

Recommend me an Android Phone

Guys you can recommend me some good android as i am bored using windows mobile since 6 years.
I want a good capable android probably with Capacitive screen and a good camera, processor and ram. I am thinking of X10 is that a good phone.
Thanks
Eh, I hear lost of bad about the X10. Why not try the Desire or Nexus one? Possibly the Galaxy S even...
i'm using a htc desire ATM and no complaint from here, running it on froyo custom rom
the n1 is good running froyo custom rom on it as well
My bro brought htc tattoo but either he or me liked it much as WM phones.
Reason :
1. Its hard to find apps for android. I know there are lots of apps for android but see #2
2. Even if you find one, 99% it will be a barcode/qc code download or phone download link but no pc download link so you will need phone with GPRS or WIFI or 3G to download and install. This is hard for Indian users
3. You cannot use pc to phone internet via USB or not even bluetooth, like WM phones.
4. You cannot install apps on sd but only on mainmemory, thank god tattoo has enough memory ( 512mb )
I think these all related to all android phones.
As you wish but I prefer WM phone the most!
Best Regards

1. What? I seem to remember the Market app on Android that has plenty of applications to use.
3. Um, if he gets a new device: FroYo. If not, I've had tethering on my G1/Dream since I rooted.
4. FroYo, I've had it on my G1/Dream since I rooted.
I find your argument invalid.
Stick with xda support & a htc froyo device...

Ah sorry I forgot to mention, I'm using official ROM on my tattoo and there are no updates for it.
May be the new versions doesn't have such issues. But for our tattoo owners. :'(
Yes there are lots of app but something doesn't suits me then WM apps downloads.
Anyways, sorry if I said anything or totally wrong.

Now i think nexus one or htc desire would be good. Only problem with nexus one is no capacitive screen. I like x10 also because of its 8 mp camera and all other features are same as nexus one, what say guyz i am confused now.

Nexus One has a capacitive screen...
Thumbs down for X10 from me.
No multitouch means no full speed typing on the soft keyboard.
Outdated Android OS version.
Very plastic and cheap build.
Timescape performance is laggy.
Wide reports of battery drain. Likely to be software related.
As of this moment, I think you've got a choice between the following:
Nexus One, Desire, Droid Incredible, Evo (depending on geographic location)
Galaxy S
Droid, Droid X

"Capacitive screen" doesn't necessarily equal "multi-touch".
For example, the X10 has a capacitive screen but it doesn't support multi-touch. It's because of the hardware. Regardless of what software updates Sony Ericsson rolls out, the X10 will not get multi-touch support.
However, the Nexus One does indeed have a capacitive screen. And the hardware supports multi-touch. In fact, it's the same screen as used in the HTC Desire. Whether or not multi-touch works, depends on the software. For example, it was mentioned in reviews that there's no multi-touch support right out the box; but certain applications like Dolphin Browser can utilize pinch-to-zoom.
So i think i have 2 options now samsung Galaxy S and Nexus one.
Which one to go for and Why, please??
Do you guys think it is worth going for motorola milestone, if i am getting it lot cheaper than nexus one. i think only drawback in milestone is slow processor and ram. Do you think 600mhz processor and 256 ram is not enough for new android builds like froyo or future one ginger bread??

Certainly the Droid/Milestone can handle Froyo since it's going to be officially released as an OTA update by Motorola. Not sure about Gingerbread though. There's not much information on that anywhere and there's conflicting reports on what are the minimum specs.
I'm not a fan of the Milestone/Droid, so I wouldn't recommend it. The hardware keyboard is a defining feature of the device and yet, it's so poorly designed and near unusable. But that's just my opinion; perhaps you're alright with it...

.. Is the milestone ... Outdated ?

i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?
Regards , Mike
I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.
Thanks everyone
.. is there any great phones (or leaks) with QWERTYs in the next few weeks which are non-Motorola ? i mean is there any leaks ? (other than that ugly HTC Vision) ?
damn i wish we had a GSM version of HTC Incredible .. it's a perfect phone (only missing a keyboard though)
somebody told me girlfriends are like mobile phones, you only wish for a new and better one, as to what you have.
so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).
yeah , your right .. but the thing is .. back in 2008 (when i only knew dumbphones and smartphones prices were a blast) i bought my beloved and now stolen SE w595 .. just a couple a days later , Here Comes SE w902 & samsung i8510 .. a better camera + bigger screen .. stuff
Honestly i felt like my new w595 was turned into bull****! i dont want that to happen next if i buy a milestone
but when i think about it .. it was out for a year .. is there really something new coming ? all the good damn phones comes to the US (droid incredible , samsung epic 4G) while leaving us lay in the dust
everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !
i've decided to wait for a non-Motorola device , i've taken myself a hour to think about it .. that's my decision .. Thanks everyone !
I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^
it will be soon!
Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!
Any issues i must take note of with buying milestone? Since i read some had wifi and baseband issues, D-pad down button is bad etc. LOL. And the droid's back cover is loose, not sure about the milestone though. Plus is there really a huge difference in droid and milestone when it comes to development/rooting/flashing roms etc.?
The only difference i know of currently is one's CDMA the other's GSM and the droid doesn't support multi-touch natively until the updated the software as well as the droid has got fm radio?
Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!
Appreciate all advice!!
Sorry for uber long posts!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.
I already sold my X1, been using my old Samsung BLackjack 2....need new phone...SOON!

WinMo to Android?

Hey Guys!!!
Ive been a Winmo user for a very long time now and currently using an Htc HD2,
I have been offered the chance to trade my phone with an unlocked Nexus One running a 2.2 Froyo, but the deal is i dont have enough knowledge on Androids.
I can manage myself with all winmo devices like flashing roms, games ,apps etc.
Is the Android OS the same?what adjustment will i face?

Just one adjustment, similar to adjusting from a village hole-in-ground toilet to a 5-star penthouse restroom with a built-in hooker.
Yeah. You'll learn to endure it.
If you want to try Android you can just try the port for the HD2
An even trade??? You're the winner with that trade. WinMo is junk compared to. Android 2.2.

Thats what im waiting for also, its not an even trade, its my hd2 plus $200 cash.
maybe soon the hd2 will have the stable android OS from the developers here.
I was in a simular boat, and found Android an easy progressive fun transition! Tons of support threads here, so go for it and never look back!
There is a learning curve that's for sure. but you should go on with this trade while this person is still on drugs.
I used WinMo for a long time before Android although I think starting Android as soon as it launched eased the curve but you wont regret it, words can't express how much more fun, faster, more stable and ultimately easier Android is to use than WinMo.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
HD2 AND $200? I dunno about that.. see if you can haggle it down some.
Well I was in the same position as the OP. I built my own custom roms for WinMo and had an extensive knowledge about hacking them....
Then I came to Android
Now I don't have to. Vanilla Android on the Nexus One is just simply amazing. I never get fustrated waiting for it to open an app or wish it did something differently. I've unlocked the bootloader on my old phone and did the SD Card Trick on my new one to gain root access and play around with custom roms... but the kicker is I like the Stock OS the best.
Right now I am running a "custom" stock firmware which is rooted and uses a black taskbar theme... but it doesn't contain any extra apps or features.
I can't scream loud enough to express how I feel for the awesomeness of Android. The OS is a dream. Customizable to no end. Very easy to replace default dialers, messaging apps, facebook apps, launchers, etc. I know a few friends with N1's and they all look completely different. I love it.
I've used Windows Mobile all the way from 2002, popped in on Blackberries from time to time, Symbian, and touched the iPhone long enough to realize it sucks.... but Android is just amazing. I couldn't recommend any other OS. Even my non-techie wife has her Android all tricked out. Its just easy to do.
2.2 brings in full fucntionality with exchange support, making it a viable alternative to winmo for enterprise users. If you are a power user, now is the time to convert.
I've owned WinMo and iPhone previously. People always compare Android to the latter. But Android really reminds me of what WinMo could have been if Microsoft had a clue. I think you will adjust without a problem. Go for it!

x2 - always how I've felt about it. I switched from winmo to android, N1 being my first device. You won't look back, and with windows mobile 7 looking the way it is, I doubt you'll be wanting to jump back in their bed anytime soon.
Go for it without any hesitations. They are not even comparable. You are about to trade Zaporozhets for an Audi. You will not look back.

I say stick with winmo 6.5.

Yes, I point out people who have no sense of humor.
Do it. Make the switch. I did. Will never go back.
