I'm going to Germany for a month and do not want to accrue any voice/data charges while I'm there. I plan to use wifi only. What's the best way to disable voice/data, but still use wifi? I also want to make sure that my apps do not try to establish a data connection outside of wifi. One idea I have is to keep the phone in "airplane" mode. But I'm concerned that if I reboot my phone it will kick itself out of airplane mode and start roaming.
Any suggestions?
change the APN settings to point to a non-exsistant server, cell interent wont work but wifi can be on and you can still make/receive calls and SMS if need be
I just got back from Europe, this worked wonders for me.
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Wireless and Network Settings
3. Go to Mobile Networks
4. Uncheck the Data Roaming Option.
This will prevent your phone from using data while you are roaming.
@dcplaya I am also running on Cin Bell. Works great!
Or get a German SIM, that way you'll have data. If anybody calls you on your US number let them leave a voice mail on Google voice

I have a Nexus One in the UK and have so far taken it to the US, Switzerland, France, NZ and HK. The above definitely works and should be all you need to do. I just had a look at my online balance and can confirm the total on my data charges is £0.00. Note that you can leave this setting disabled the whole time, even when you're in your own country. The phone distinguishes between roaming and non-roaming and acts accordingly.

I've had my Kaiser for 2 days now with no probs. Then today, a nightmare. I cannot make any calls longer than 10 secs. For some reason as soon as i make a call it shows the 3g logo then kicks the call, loses the network connection then gets it back. it also shows the E for edge Icon all the time and its this icon that changes to 3g during a call. It also has the triangle icon all the time, which is roaming. i sure as hell hope im not! all other functions in this device work like a charm-texting, gps, wifi- all work great. Im on fido in Vancouver. This is not a supported handset and so i get no help from them( i dont think the 20 year olds that man the tech lines have a clue anyway). I read that it may be due to an old sim card, is this likely? Any help would be appreciated, im at my wits end, and im starting to think of selling. Help!
P.S.
I dont care about data connection other than Wifi, since the data plans are a joke here. So i dont even want these features active.
Try to switch your phone to GSM only (under phone options/band)
Dag Gammit i think this may have done it! -crossing fingers and testing- will play around with this some more and see what happens. thanks for the suggestion.
Yes indeed ID64, has it right. It's not just this phone that tries to seek the strongest band around, but drops the call in the process.
Changing using settings to GSM only works, but you may be in situations where you want the other bands. You can use the same method to switch back, But you might want a nicer/quicker way using Danielherrero's Bandswitch or Commmgrpro application. He's a member here and you can search here or google. The early freeware version is around somewhere.

Fido and the roaming triangle
I wouldn't worry about the roaming thing, since all of the towers report as rogers since the network conversion.
Here in Winnipeg I'm always roaming and it has never been an issue. I'm even calling long distance (Calgary?) for voice mail.
I haven't tried it since have the all you can eat data plan for $50. but I vaguely recall seeing in the wizard forum that apparently you can get a cheap data plan through fido if you claim your phone is a HipTop. Worth a try if you want data.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1135200&postcount=6
hiptop
Umm, just out of curiosity, does the HipTop thing still work? and what is it exactly?
I am about to get a plan and this one sounds intriging..
I'm on Fido with a Tilt too, works flawlessly with my 8 year old sim card. I'm very interested in this Hip-Top data plan. Has anybody tried it yet? someone definatly should and let us know!
any way to get rid of the roaming notifications so we can enable automatic email downloading? feature will not work while roaming and my FIDO phone is always roaming on my home network. can't find a registry hack for the Kaiser for this.
Fido roaming and e-mail
I haven't found a way to turn off the roaming notification. However you can set up e-mail accounts to automatically download even when roaming. Obviously if you do really roam you will be charged mightily so I would use with caution.
for hotmail (windows live) it's option 5 in the options menu item
for other accounts
-Send/Receive Schedule
-- Advanced Settings
--- Use automatic send/receive schedule when roaming
send/recieve schedule when roaming

My rom will not let me enable the automatic send/recieve when roaming without FIRST defining a send/recieve schedule. The schedule is inconveniant becuase i don't want the phone to stay on 3G connected 24hrs/day or my battery goes dead. I have it set to disconect 3G after 45 seconds but this only works if the phone is ON. When the phone is in sleep state it will leave the 3G on all the time so it opens up a whole other can of worms/problems. Does your rom let you enable this send/recieve while roaming option without first enabling a schedule? if so, which rom you using?
Is there a way to disable GPRS data WITHOUT disabling HSDPA?
(I see the reverse is possible - you can disable HSDPA from [Settings > Connections] and still do GPRS.)
I have three X series and do not want to get roaming data fees. For those uinfamiliar with threes plans, the HSDPA is very cheap but when you frequently and un noticed roam off their network onto GPRS you slugged with large roaming fees.
Ideally I need plain GPRS data always blocked unless I over ride it and at the same time HSDPA always enabled.
Anyone seen a way to do this. I am aware of Modaco "No Data" but it does not fit the bill for what I want.
Yes, indeed there is. Your post prompted me to figure it out. while I don't get hit with roaming or charges for jumping on edge or GPRS, I do really like the 3G service I have and my house is covered. Usually though it's when I'm driving and listening to internet radio or something, It'll jump onto GPRS/EDGE and the buffer will underrun, not great.
So... your question caused me to figure it out.
It's actually in the phone menu however, if you don't have it setup you have to enable this particular tab.
Real Simple Method:
Start -> Settings -> Personal -> Phone
Click the band tab, set network type to WCDMA and leave GSM/UMTS to Auto(don't change this otherwise you'll cripple your phone's ability to tower hop.)
IF you don't have this tab here's how you enable it in the registry.
Either manually edit your registry and navigate to HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting and change ShowUMTSBandPage to "1"
Or just import my included registry file to enable that tab. Soft-reset for fun and voila. I've done this tweak now and now my phone stays on 3g even when the GPRS signal is far better. I'm quite happy with this setup.
Enjoy
On a stock Tilt, even if that reg key is set to 1, it still does not show the Band tab.
Vexamus. No this it not a solution for me as it changes both Voice AND Data. Making the switch you recommend, kills my voice capability as I am currently roaming. I need to be able to make calls when roaming outside of my home WCDMA network. It is only Data that I want to restrict.
Furthermore having done this, when I set the phone network back to Auto to restore voice, I could not get any sort of connection to re establish. Data or Voice - nada. Even after powering the phone and device on and off!
To fix this I went to the lower GSM/UMTS band box and as I know I am roaming right now, set it to away from Auto to the first GSM option. This allowed the connection to re establish then I set it back to Auto and all is OK again.
So if anyone else sets their network type away from Auto while roaming you may need to toggle your GSM/UMTS band settings to get things back. Once back you can set both to Auto.
ammended Q.

I am interested in this too

Sorry that didn't work out for you, mate.
I don't have that roaming problem, I have UMTS coverage everywhere I go so no biggie. And I've been flipping the setting back and forth all day and never had any issue with not being able to reconnect. I'll keep researching it.

I don't think that setting the band is possible with an AT&T rom; moreover, I think it also has to do with the radio version.

good idea
My wife 3G sim works on my tab, going back to the shop as it is the sim car the problem, not the tab
thanks again
Glad it was that and not the precious tab.
Bad Karma
I have finally a Data only 3G simcard, it works on a phone and on a demo galaxy tab in orange shop
but can't get it to work on my tab
can still get internet with the voice and 3G of my wife!!
do I need to flash an orange image ???
No, you need to change a setting.
Google "apn setting orange france broadband"
Go to settings, wireless networks, mobile networks, access point names,
You will have to add the settings you got from google: menu, add new access point.
Fill in the values. Menu, save, reboot.
When the tab starts, go to that apn and select it. Wait a few, then go back one screen, and select your sim card carrier.
You could also go to the demo tab and copy the settings into your tab, or from your wifes phone.
Found out that
IF the wifi is ON then the 3G is OFF
IF the wifi is OFF then the 3G is ON
so working now, end of game
Oops. Good find. Enjoy.
Hi,
I have just updated my Note from stock gingerbread to the official UK ICS 4.04 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 using Odin.
The phone is now running XXLRK (kernel and baseband) - it's not rooted at this time.
Everything is working fine except that I have no mobile data connection. Wifi and voice calling is fine though.
The Network Signal App shows that I have an HSDPA (7.2Mbit/s) net type but the data state is 'Disconnected'. I have confirmed that 'Use packet data' is on in the network settings and I have re-entered the (Vodafone Contract) APN settings several times.
I have put the SIM in a spare phone and data works as expected.
Any ideas?
Thanks

have you tried checking data usage under 'Settings'? , usually there's a capped set if your way over the pre-determine data cap on the phone. Try to raise the bar all the way up and see if you can gain data connection again.

I'm not sure if it helps at all(in relevance to the OP's issues), bear in mind apn settings are different in every carriers. Manually configuring doesnt' change anything at all... even worse, your just aggravating more his problem.

Thanks to both of you - the APN settings are confirmed as correct.
The data usage sits solidly at 0. I have disabled the cap, but even with it turned on and set at 5GB (my cap is 1GB but since we're only 7 days into the month there's no way I have exceeded it), it makes no difference.
I have confirmed with Vodafone that everything should work.
I have also tried a couple of previous radio images without success. At the moment I have just pulled the battery and I am waiting an hour or so before firing up the phone again.
If I can't fix this soon I might just revert back to stock Gingerbread, but I get the feeling the fix should be really simple.
FIXED!!
I added a new APN to the list and just duplicated the Vodafone Contract settings that I know work. This new APN setup was identical to the pre-defined one (which I had been editing) - but it works!!!.
Stick that one in the memory bank for possible future use!

I hope this is in the proper forum and hopefully the question has not been answered yet. I did a search and have found some threads but not this exact question.
So anyway...I have a Rogers (Canada) HTC One M7 running 4.4.2 and HTC Sense 6.0,
Lately I have been roaming in the USA and have incurred roaming charges even though I set my Data Roaming setting to Off (no check mark). It seems to only happen when I am roaming. Basically this is what happens.
The Data Roaming Setting is set to Off all the time.
I go into the US and lose data connection as I start to roam. This is fine.
If I turn off Mobile Data and then later turn it back on, I get the "You are roaming and incur charges..." pop up box.
The only options are OK or Cancel
Choosing Cancel keeps the Mobile Data Off
Choosing OK turns ON Mobile Data and the Data Roaming setting is suddenly set to ON (there is a check mark where previously there wasn't) and I now incur charges.
Is this by design? Shouldn't the Data Roaming setting stay off, even if you turn on/off the Mobile Data? I am not sure if this is a Phone Issue, and Android issue (OS or corrupted OS) or a Rogers (cell provider) issue or a Roaming (cell provider) issue.
I am hoping someone can enlighten me on this behaviour.
Thanks in advance.

I guess i am having the reverse effect to your problem, my data roaming keeps switching off.
With data roaming enabled, and network selection on automatic. Whenever I am in a no signal area with my home network provider, the phone should automatically roam on a partner network for mobile network and data network. (I can confirm this works when tested on a few Samsung phones). However on my HTC, the mobile network roaming works (calls and text) but data roaming does not work. It connects momentarily then disconnects and stays disconnected and wont re-enable until a reboot. If i manually select a network (either home network or roaming network) and then restart the phone, the mobile data will stay enabled. But as soon as there is a switch between home or roaming network then the data disconnects and cant reconnect until the next reboot.
I was wondering if this could be a hardware limitation or software limitation.

I personally don't think it is a hardware issue, although it may be a software bug and an issue with the roaming provider. I believe that the data roaming setting gets "reset" once the phone mobile data setting is turned back on on a foreign network. I think that the HTC "sees" a foreign network and does not know what to do so it either gets the setting from the roaming provider or just defaults to a set setting.
In my case, I had lots of support calls with Rogers and according to them, my data roaming settings are probably resetting based on the roaming provider when the mobile data setting is turned back on. I actually video recorded what happens and sent it to Rogers when I was roaming. Once they saw it, they told me that any unintentional roaming charges will be credited back.
They did not tell me if it was a software issue or a roaming issue. However, I also tried the same setting using an old iPhone4S and a Samsung Galaxy S3 and both worked fine under the same conditions. That is, the settings were retained.
