Okay, a little back story. I've been a BB user for quite some time now, got bored and made the switch to N1 this past January.
At this point I'm ready to say: The N1 power consumption or battery BLOWS CHUNKS. But folks thats my take.
I mean here I am with the most powerful and best phone in the world right now and I have to keep my brightness at 33% (GOD forbid I forget and keep it at 100%, I wont make it through the day!). I have to keep my GPS off (so my geo tagging is always off by a few thousand freaking meters). I have to limit my use and take it easy on data intensive apps. It's ludicrous, I want to use this damn thing.
Don't get me wrong I'm fine with the 33% brightness and with the light use (because I'm a student and quite frankly I don't really push the phone like that, due to being in class). But I would still like it if the phone wasn't CRYING for the "milk" bottle every day sharply/promptly at 8 pm.
So the phone makes it through the day (hurrah). But it still annoys me that now I have this new "nag": "get home and charge me Ori". So if anything spontaneous pops up like say: a date with a nice young lady, you can bet your bottom dollar my phone won't be making it alive that night. It's another constraint on an already constrained enough life.
My buddy says "dude I don't know whats wrong with your idiot self.. blah blah blah.. my Nexus battery is great". But the damn jerk is coming from a G1 !!! go figure LOL...
When evaluating something you don't compare it to a pitiful performance. You see how you stack up against the best. So if you reached your conclusion because you are comparing it to a G1 or Cliq I have to honestly disagree with your method of reaching that conclusion.
PS. I'm not a nagging *****. I know I came off a BB. Thats why I'm not asking for much. I would just like to see the phone consistently make it to 11 PM every night from a 7AM 100% charge. Is that too much to ask for?
my battery never dips below 50%... of course i'm working most of the day instead of playing with my phone.
Seems about the same as my Nokia N95's was to be honest.
try the undervolted kernel, it saves you quite a bit of juice.
ill toss my input in on this after i run the att one for a few days to see how much running strictly on 2g actually saves, the tmo band one i had last a good 12-14 hours if i was playing with it mildly at work. thats with the check mark for 2g only, wireless is usually constantly on, and gps always on(but not always running up in the status bar), brightness set to auto
Not sure if there's whole lot you can do if you want to keep brightness at 100% and GPS chip on all the time.
I hike quite a bit and I use SportyPal to track my progress. Obviously when I hike, the screen is off but GPS chip is always on. Although I never managed to completely drain the battery so far, I would say it will last around 7-8 hours. I do use SetCPU so that when battery reaches below 40%, clock goes way down to the minimum possible.
Other than getting an extended battery, not sure if there is a solution. 100% screen brightness and GPS really taxes batteries on all cell phones.
By the way, this is MUCH MUCH better than HTC Magic (which in turn was much better than HTC Diamond). I'm not sure how they did it since the battery capacity is the same, screen is larger, and CPU is faster. I am happy.
Battery is better than the last few HTC devices I've used and on par with the TP2 (all had similar features, large touch screen, Wifi, GPS, BT). So I would say it's about par for the course as far as I am concerned.
Try the 3200mah battery from Seido... you can run all day with wifi, gps, and bluetooth plus have screen at 100% and still have 50%+ battery at 8pm.
If battery life is more important than the slim look, get the sedio 3200mAh battery.
With 0% brightness, occasional use (GMail, GVoice, GTalk), GPS and Sync on, about 20 minutes of talking, meebo IM running... The battery just lasts 12 hours. CPU profile set to 512MHz when below 50% battery; and is fixed at 245MHz when in standby/sleep.
For the amount of things that it can do I'm happy with the battery life.
If I'm going out I carry the AC cable in my coat pocket
I realize this may not be the best solution for most of you, but I also have a portable Duracell charger. It normally acts as a charger for 4 AA batteries. But I can plug-in a USB cable on the charger and the other end to N1. It gives me roughly another 2000mah worth of juice using 4 Eneloops. The charger is bulky though so no good if you want to carry them in pockets. But works for me when I carry a backpack with me. I needed this charger anyways for AA batteries so it's a nice bonus that it can provide some mobile juice for N1.
My battery life is pretty great. I'm running the latest Cyan with the EPE54B radio, i keep the screen on about 75% brightness and never change it, I leave wifi and gps on always, I have bluetooth on and connected for about 2 hours a day, for the 8 hours I'm at work I don't use my phone much only to send some txts and maybe use a couple apps. So I unplug my phone at 7am and when I leave work at 5pm I have 82% battery left everyday with my normal usage.
Just for reference; before switching to Cyan and the latest radio i would have 75% battery when I left work.
What are you people doing with your phones that you have to carry a charger or a spare battery with you?!
I'm coming from a HD2 and I easily get better battery life than half you guys even with heavy streaming radio/youtube usage and that thing has an enormous power-sucking screen!

OK so I discovered a few things that are worthy of mentioning since I last posted this issue.
My Nexus off/wake button crapped out and I sent it back for repair. When I got it back it was wiped (like new). I forgot to setup my facebook app and widget. For about 2 days I was going around with the facebook app "off" (it was finals week as such I was not paying much attention to facebook or distractions). I noticed better battery performance. Eventually I set it up but my "Sync Contacts" setting is set to "Don't Sync".
Also I got the SMODA widget that gives u direct "on-off" 3G capability. So whenever I'm at around 30% battery life I throttle the connection to squeeze out as much life as I can. Unless I'm browsing and I need 3G.

In all honesty, I've been getting the best battery life I've ever had with Froyo. I only charge my phone in the car with the car dock to and from work (25 minute commute) and occassionally let it sit on the desk dock when I'm messing around online. With those charging habits, I typically get two days of use out of it and have no issues doing any of the things I need to do with it without a charger (games, navigation, calls, texts, web+market browsing, etc.). I could not say the same about any of the Cyanogen ROM's I was running before.

I have to admit...I am a bit bummed about the battery life. I have the stocked 2.1, on the ATT N1. I have turned off the brightness and I can get 3/4 of the day on the battery. I thought it would last all day but I definitely have to charge it by end of day.
I am looking forward to Froyo for, by all accounts, the battery life has been improved.
Again, I should emphasize that "I'm a BIT bummed" for all in all...I'm still loving my N1 and haven't looked back.
I've got Froyo on mine and this is what I've noticed.
If I turn my phone on, and send about 10 text messages in an hour, then turn it off, my battery life will be around: 94%.
If I let it idle for an hour without any action, my battery will drain about 1%/hr.
If I am using the internet and sms and just constantly using the processor on the phone, in abour an hr I'll be at 85% battery.
This is all with the backlight set at 11% (lowest setting it will go)
my battery last 27 hours on reg use... 17 hours on heavey use...

I find that on the ATT nexus one, setting to gsm auto (prl) makes a tremendous difference for idle time. With this setting I lost only 11 % in 12 hours of idle. And when I unplug, after 1 hour my battery will still be at 100% with no use.
This setting still gives you 3g too, so no worries.
My N1 on froyo started to hog alot of juice. I don't know why, it was fine the first 2 weeks but after that it started to suck up loads for some reason. Got tired of trying new kernels and i did many options so i gave up and went back to Cyanogen.. Running 5.0.8 Test5 with Froyo Kernel and it's about 20-24 hours since i last hooked it off the charger and it's at 56% left. Amazing. Tho' im a light user and i keep most stuff off when i don't use it. Even 3G.
I think that our perception of what we should get concerning battery life is a bit skewed. If I have RIM device (last was BB on metroPCS) I can go like two days without charing. All my email is push. There is no Facebook widget, or weather widget, etc constantly updating. The screen is half the size with weak resolution. The processor is half the speed, or less. The ram is barely enough to run the device. I could go on and on.
The fact is you have a computer, a small computer you can carry in your pocket. This machine is about as powerful as a desktop was 2 years ago. You are powering it with battery that is 1500mh and is the size of a dollar bill folded in half. What do you want exactly?
If you want a battery that lasts 2 or three days, get a dumb phone. If want a pocked PC, you are going to have to deal with the fact that doing all of the things your phone does uses battery power.
If I unplug my laptop I get 2hours and 15minutes. My phone lasts about 7-8hours. I stream music an hour or two, text, play some games, browse the web. I know that it is going to die. I have a spare battery. I change it if I can't charge it.
Battery life is worse than a Blackberry and better than iPhone, and you get the fastest device on the market. What more could you ask for?

Ok so if you dont know the 8925 has probably the worst battery life of any HTC phones I have ever used. It was like they decided to put all the latest and greatest into a shell sexier than hell, then give it a old 8125 battery,
The 8125 had what a 1250mAh battery, so they give the 8925 a 1350mAh, makes no since. I am still use to my P990i having a 1500mAh battery and getting 7-9 hours of play time and a 10-18 day stand by time.
Are their any upgraded batteries out yet? if no I may just have to get a second battery and charger cause I cannot go the last 4 hours of my day without a phone. Oh and a car charger is out of the question. I swear those things were made by battery companies to kill you battery faster than shizzit.
Actually, I have found that after a few full charges and running the battery down to about 5% it lasts pretty good.
The first day I had it I had to charge it after about 4-5 hours. Now I am using it most of the day.
if I'm 3Ging and/or GPSing, it goes fast.
if i'm not doing those but doing anything else, it lasts a long time. Easily a whole day.
3G is a huge strain on battery life. Don't expect to get anywhere near the battery life you did with the 8125 if you are using 3G.
With my 8525 I would get 9 hours of battery life at the most (100%-0). With the Tilt, I have been getting about 12 hours of battery life with about the same amount of use.
I run WL push email all day and browse the web pretty heavily.
Make sure to condition your battery by running it all the way down to 0 before you recharge a few times.
I have been conditioning the hell out of my battery so far, 100% down to %5ish, 100 to 5 100 to 5, only charges it and gone through like 3 cycles so far. Hopefully I will see something soon

I'm getting between 8-10 hours of very active use and 10-16 hours of life when I'm not on the silly thing all the time. SPB Pocket Plus calculates my battery life at around 10-11 hours, and it's usually pretty good at estimating it once it's seen enough data.
Nevertheless, I can also attest to the fact that the battery life of my Kaiser is increasing. I'd say its about 25-30% better than when I first started using it a few weeks ago.

Where do you see this feature in Pocket Plus?
I am hoping Slueth is right about the battery life increasing over time. Mine isn't a 4th of what the 8125 or 8525 was. The comments on 3G being a huge drain I can't agree with. The 8525 and 8125 had the same battery consumption and I could get a full day of regular usage on both.
I can say using the Kaiser rom over the at&t rom made a noticeable improvement.
I live in HSDPA nation [Bay Area]. My tilt gets pushed to limits everyday. I have mobile shell installed with weather update, push email and active sync through exchange server, use ICS with laptop on the go. I can get through the day with heavy use and the battery never falls below 40%. At 11:00PM last night, I had 75% left on my battery level indicator.
I would say it's about 20-30% better than Hermes' battery performance.

That's AMAZING! I wish I could have spent 75% by then and still have 25% left. I use everything you mentioned too but I barely make it t 7 or 8 pm before my tilt turns off at 1% battery level so I have to stick it in the charger as soon as I get home from work at about 6'ish.

Add the battery meter to one of your tabs and look at the options for the meter by tap & hold - options. It allows you to set a fixed battery life or use a statistically estimated duration.

It all depends on your actual data usage. If you aren't transmitting a lot of data, then the HDSPA usage won't have a significant effect because it isn't on all that frequently. If you do, you'll definitely notice a difference.
Mine was showing about 75% this morning and is now at 57% (5:30pm) - that is following three or four short phone calls, several web page downloads, several synchronisations via bluetooth and ten or fifteen minutes experimenting with the business card scanner.
I do agree with other comments here that battery life improves after several charge/discharge cycles. This Kaiser replaces my old Hermes - I think the battery life may not be quite as good, but it isn't vastly worse - trouble is that it has so many fun things to play with that you just do more with it! Just the GPS alone will draw that battery down if you use it too much - my hand-held Garmin can flatten a pair of high capacity AAs in less than 24 hours - and that is not powering a 3g transceiver and bluetooth at the same time.

i must say, i have the case of not able to leave my phone in my pocket. I always have to have my phone out, turn on from sleep and do something with it. If I'm able to resist this temptation, my phone can last the whole day going down to 50%. If I'm messing around with it, then it could go below.
I noticed that Skype is a MAJOR draw on the battery.
When I had skype on and logged in, the USB charger could barely hold the charge even ... when I was also using GPS with Google maps the battery life was visibly going down.
After using the device more normally now I get quite decent battery life.
The real test will come when I fly cross country and read an ebook on it.
If i can resist the urge to play with the GPS i can get about 2 days out of mine, but my useage is pretty light. I am using Direct Push with my exchange server, and get about 15 emails a day. The TCP timeout on my firewall is set to 1 hour, so i think that helps too. I am using the black & blue comm manager with 3g option, and i leave 3g off(it switches between 3g and Edge all day at work, and i heard that can lower battery significantly). I only enable 3g if i tether, and even then 3g coverage in my area SUCKS! Verizon has EVDO everywhere here, at&t needs to get their ass in gear . Overall i'm happy with the battery life. I've setup a few PDA's for some of my users here so i wasn't expecting anything great (although our two blackjack users seem very happy with battery life).

Just found your site, and am interested in purchasing a battery for my ATT Tilt/HTC Kaiser however; when I looked at my battery it does say KAIS 160, but the P/N is 35H00086-00M, and not 35H00088-00M. The device is ATT Branded, and in the device info on the phone, model number just says Kaiser, not Kaiser120 etc. Is there any difference, what battery should I get?

Terrible so far... but i've only been through one charge cycle, almost. I topped off the out of the box battery. From there it's been plugged into the computer while i was adding w***z (i mean perfectly legal software). So I've never actually winded it down to 0.
Is it bad to keep topping it off like this?
The battery life i've been having probably wouldn't even last a day but i should probably go down to 5% before i charge it again and see if it improves.
My motto with this phone is "Who needs decent battery life if you've got GPS, a 3MP camera, an unbelievable library of third pary software, 3G, a fully qwerty keyboard, gorgeous touch screen, and tilting screen?"

I unplug y phone every morning at 8am, on my way to work, I plug my phone up to a car charger for about 30mins, then when I'm at work around noon I plug up my phone for a hour... and yet I still manage to kill the battery by 3-4pm... the battery wont even last a full work day, even with getting juice for 1 1/2hrs... thats rediculous in my opinion, 8am-4pm = 8hrs - 1 1/2hrs charging = 6 1/2hrs battery life...
At that rate, I need 4(!!!) batteries to last a full 24hours

Strange, mine lasts about 24hrs (approx) without charging, that's with moderate web usage, games (for about 1 - 2 hours) texting all day and atleast 3 - 4 hours talk time. I'm using the battery my kaiser came with.
Although I have used an assload of tweaks in regards to battery life (turned down brightness, turned off all LED notifications, +used most of the power saving tweaks used in kaiser tweak, then again my sound + vibrations are almost always off except for when i'm sleeping or when the phone is charging, and more i can't think of)
This has been discussed before, so it's worth searching.
Battery life has many variables but if yours is un-usually short then investigate your mail settings, checking every 5 minutes obviously uses more than every 30 minutes.
Check if you have the band switching problem and the solutions for that
Are you killing running programmes, including Active Sync.
Does the phone feel warm (around battery) when it's off the charger. (a sign of an application running but possibly blocked)
So do you kill wifi after using it or if you don't use it then is it running abyway - that will kill the battery. etc etc etc
The above is not a full list but should give some starting points for searches. In general I would expect around a day of low to medium use. If you only get a couple of hours then check the things above.

How much are you using the phone for bluetooth or wifi or 3g? If not much, then you're right.
I have Alex'x WM 6.1 beta2. It's been a full work day and I still have about 75% battery. I had the stock at&t rom then tried stock HTC rom. The HTC rom had pitiful battery life. I kept it for 1 day in airplane mode and it still died in about 8 hours. The at&t rom lasted about 14 hours. Alex's may last 3 or 4 days. His WM 6.1 gives me the best battery life out of all of his or anyone's rom that I've tried.
hmm well I use an exchange server, so I cant really configure how often it checks mail... I guess it checks constantly... I'm on the phone for maybe 2-3 hrs during work, if even that, i do text alot, and use OctroTalk IM client... Thats about it, i dont play music, i dont watch movies, and I dont play games, dont use bluetooth, but I think it uses the 3G all the time, I'm not sure, it allways says 3G up in top bar...
If flashing it with a new rom can help the battery life, I might consider doing that, is there any other befits from doing so? Over all I've been pleased with the over all performance of the stock rom... except this battery issue.

2-3 hours on the phone!! and constant mail checking!! I don't know about anyone else but for this type of phone I think your battery life is probably normal. I mean that's not far off half a working day on the phone!

when i got this diamond phone last week the battery performance
was bad serving me with less then a day worth of power where i
had to buy a second battery.
now that i have been off from work for a few days (3 days) i finaly
had the chance to cain this phone properly eg. flipping wifi on/off
through out the day listening to shoutcast, lenghty periods trying
to setup LAN, listening music while out on the road and checking
emails, looking on the net, yapping on the phone and sending txt messages.
to my supprise the battery seem to be holding up pretty good. now it
appears to be holding out till the end of the day where before i had to
carry two batteries now i think i can get away with carrying just one.
here are my stupid questions
1, does htc batteries get better performance after multiple charges?
2, did i have a semi faulty battery and now a miracle has happend?
3, am i just dreaming that the more i use the longer the battery stays on?
today i charged the bat. at 9am (ish) and now its 3,45pm. i still have 3 bars
remaining im supprised as from before a few days ago this was not the case.
im using the daimond with no mods and standard battery.

what i tend to find with new mobiles is that you have to charge fully and then DISCHARGE FULLY the phone numerous amount of times to get it to perform to the best of its abilities. I don't think its anything to do with HTC batteries, just the fact that new batteries have never been used and need to learn!

you are half right. this battery life is improving if you keep charging it but it is not advised to fully discharge them.
the fully charged-fully discharged method was for the old batteries with "memory".
somewhere in this forum, in the trinity forum somebody experimented the two ways of charging-discharging the battery. the conclusion was that it is better to charge the battery anytime, any occasion u have.
Indeed, the battery's performances (and this is applicable to all common batteries) will increase by time until it reaches its max capabilities.
To gain performance, the battery has to discharge and charge very frequently, or better, continuously. I don't really know how the Diamond manages it (meaning if the battery is full, will the device still get power from the battery if it is plugged on, or will it drain power from the cable. It could also drain from battery if it is fully charged and charge it in the same time, or it could simply always take it from the cable and charge the battery in less time)
The reverse is also true, meaning if you don't discharge/charge your battery frequently enough, its performances will decrease by time.
Also, if your battery discharges and charges all the time, it's lifetime will be longer than a battery that is only used once in a week.
I don't know if I made it clear, lol.
By the way, don't think that if you keep charging your battery you will end up with weeks of battery, there is a limit and it is 850mAh on the stock battery, if I remember correctly.

all i know its 8:35pm and i have only used 1 bar from around 4:30
which now leave me with 2 bars. im jumping for joy because normally
by 6pm ish the battery would have already died.
with all the hammering today i cant believe it only took 2 bars in nearly
12 hours and thats with no extra charge from the psu and only 5 usb
connections to the pc to sync and add files totaling 2 - 5 minutes
on each connection.
now i can officially say this phone is "DA BOMB"

The thing that kills the battery on this phone above everything else is the GPS - knocks it out in 90minutes or less. If you were having fun (even for a few minutes) with it in your first few days, this might explain it...

yeha that would explain it but the thing is I haven't even installed TomTom or any other GPS related app!!! weird. but i've had it for about 4 days now and battery does seem to improve slightly on a daily basis.

So, I installed the WMLongLife to Switch off communication interfaces whenever not used.
However, during last couple of weeks it happen to me to work prevalently at home and in my office, without the requirement to use the network from my HD2.
Accidentally I noticed that if I charge the HD2 and never use internet services (but only as a phone: 5-10 calls per day), the battery life magically goes from 1-2 days to 1 Week and more.
Is it normal? Maybe some device is not properly shut down after first use?
Now I charged my mobile on thrsday morning, and after 5 days of use I have still 42% left.
I wish to share your opinion, and to know if there is outside a better software than WMLongLife to preserve batteries when high speed connections, BT and Wifi are not used.

It's a phone with a massive screen, bluetooth, wifi, 3G and the list could go on...
I myself, is amazed that it can last a day.
Using it with constant 3G, bluetooth, GPS back and forth at least once a day, e-mails ticking in all the time, bluetooth headset and so forth...
The HD2 is like a small laptop...
- try getting a laptop run a full day on a battery the size of the HD2s.

I fully charged the phone last night around 12AM, now after 13 hours most of which is standby, 1 hour of music, and maybe 30 minutes of browsing/playing with it its at 70% battery life. Is this normal?
I dont get 3G and I have wifi and bt off. Any other ideas to conserve battery?
The HD2 is as good, if not better than any other smartphone I've owned. I always recharge my phone overnight, so as long as the battery's good for a day I'm happy. Any bigger battery and the phone would need to be much fatter to accommodate it.
A week sounds pretty optimistic to me.

You could try and turn down the brightness of the screen for one...
I had mine on 100% for the first couple of days, but it just ate the battery like that. Then changed it to 70% (almost can't see the difference) when it's on battery, and that helped a lot!
Then you should perhaps try and download BsBTweaks or something like that, and activate the "power save" option...
Something to do with the SD card or something, not sure...!?
But to be honest, I think it's pretty decent.
13 hours of stand by, 1 hour of playing music and 30 minutes browsing/gaming - and still on 70%.
You have to remember, it's a very powerful device and as such it uses a lot of power!
Again I confirm,
charge this morning is still 25% left and yesterday I used internet connection for 15 minutes, then switch off devices and a soft reset to stop eventually pending drivers.
I do not use HD2 for listening music or playing films: only calls, contacts, synchronized agenda with gcalendar, emails, and internet.
Previously I noticed that after using even once the internet connection (without the soft reset), battery last at most 36 hours.
That is why I suspect some processes/services be pending in background and draining battery low.
Again I am not trying to demonstrate the life of my mobile is longer...
... Just noticed that there are some operational conditions that may prevent higher power drains and to understand if someone else has investigated the point.

I do the same!
Check email one or twice a day. 5/6 calls a day. Wmlong life on. Don't care about 3g... it's set to be in automatic. Some excel and word files. Some sms. It's incredible that such a powerful device can stand by so long!
Otherwise when I use it for work, wi-fi, bluetooth, gps and bla bla, the life of the battery is about 12 hours... but who cares?

Do it exists for WM6.5 an extended taskmanager (AKA in the windows style) that can also reports for processes and spent CPU time?
I can barely go a full day and have to charge it at night.
Is anyone else getting really poor battery life? I have Wi-Fi on a lot but with screen off just so it automatically gets my push e-mails. Could this be the reason?
Before I bought the Vivid, I read every review that was out, even the customer reviews on AT&T's site. There was a common theme in all of them: Battery life is bad. Even the glowing reviews had "battery life" as a con or said they wished it was better.
Needless to say, my expectations weren't high. I have had HTC phones in the past and battery has never been their strong suit.
Imaging my surprise when I tell you that after a 10 hour work day, I go home with an average of 60% battery. I text throughout the day, have seven e-mail accounts syncing, widgets that pull data on my home screen, etc. I am definitely using the phone. I leave Wifi on all the time and I have LTE access wherever I go, so the LTE radio is always on.
Am I really that unique? Is anyone else getting good battery life with the Vivid? If the Skyrocket is supposed to have way better battery life, I can't imagine how long it would last compared to my Vivid, at least with my use.
Overall, very happy with this phone. Battery life is what always drove me away from Android and that is not an issue here.
I would say I unplug my phone around 7 and it gets to 10% around 7 so 12 hours ? I would say thats pretty good battery life I came from the inspire and it would die after 7-10 hours so I would say its a lot better! Though I cant wait for a cm9 or 7 rom since i was getting a full 24 hours + With that.... So im very excited to see!
I am also getting about 10 hours with heavy texting use throughout the day. I have friends overseas and we text via Whatsapp and sometimes Skype. Otherwise it would last even longer since I the screen display wouldn't always be on. I am not complaining getting 10 hours of use though since I'm coming from an HTC Aria which was about half that.

I have WiFi on at work, but I don't do a lot of e-mailing from the phone. (I work at a desk all day, so I have e-mail on my PC.) But I do look up a lot of things. I suspect I use the phone for at least a few minutes 6-8 times during the work day and 2-3 times in the evening (with WiFi at home). I am not a heavy data plan user, partly because of WiFi access. I use Bluetooth to connect to my car's sound system during my 30-minute commutes. I usually put it into Airplane mode at night, cutting down on the battery consumption. So, I would expect to get somewhat better battery usage than someone who is on their phone much of the time.

Just out of curiosity: Why put it in airplane mode at night? Why not just plug it in to recharge?
I have a lot of days like you where I use it lightly. I have noticed that the idle drain on this phone isn't nearly as bad as past Android phones I have owned.
Yesterday I got 16 hours out of my phone. That is with me syncing three email accounts, running a live background, using data to read news articles, downloads from the android store, browsing the web, and making around 30 minutes of calls. It is much better than my cappy was. I made sure to charge the battery when I first got it all of the way before powering it on. I also have let it run down completely to cycle the battery.

When my phone was stock the battery life was OK, not terrible, but not great either. With a custom ROM the battery life has increased greatly. I unplug it around 8am and when I go to charge it at night I usually have around 40% left. That is with moderate to heavy use, at least that's what I consider my use.
Failed to mention I am on the stock Rom.

I got around 17 hours last night and was only down to 70% left. Quite a bit of use too. It's actually better for me than my GS2 was.

I'm always getting 20+ hrs on my vivid with med. Use with the stock Rom my battery was pretty good but with rumraider its going on about 30 hrs with 40% left ....wow and I haven't even charged it since I flashed
I think alot of the differences in battery life have to do with how strong of a cell signal you have. The weaker the signal, the quicker the battery dies since your phone is constantly trying to stay connected. Also, if your signal is bad, than that usually means your internet data is slower too and thus it takes longer to download news, email, and web pages, thus killing your battery even further.
Although, my signal is usually at 2-3 bars, the battery seems to last much longer than I was led to believe from reading reviews. Overall, I am pretty happy with this phone.
Just a suggestion, I am getting fairly good battery left, I am on a rooted stock rom with most of the bloat ware & processes frozen thru Ti Backup, I have wifi on all day but limit sync schedule (with refresh on use enabled) I have noticed that the battery stays at 100% for a while then starts to drop off. Today running about 7.5 hours and currently have 95% charge available. I also have Juice Defender free helping out with ballanced profile enabled.

I text fairly frequently, do a reasonable amount of web browsing (read: where I don't have access to a computer), sync 3 email accounts, check XDA and play GameBoy on the thing. Weather is on hourly autoupdate with location; news is on demand when the widget is viewed.
The only daytime charging I do is when I'm using my phone as my car's AUX input, where it is plugged on the charger (although still draining according to the battery graph).
I end the day with 52% battery life, off the charger at 7:45 AM, back on at 12:00 AM. Much better than my Captivate. Prior to root, custom ROMs and SetCPU, it would clock in at around 38%.

What are your settings for setcpu? This is my first root and I have yet to test the app. And it is useable after root, correct? Just need to purchase from the market? Thanks!

I totally agree with this. My office is in the basement of our building and I get fairly poor signal - maybe 1 bar but I still can access the LTE network. When I turn my wifi on, by the end of the work day, my battery is much less drained vs not having it on and my phone searching for signal from the mobile data network.
At home, I have a pretty good signal, but there's not LTE coverage yet, so the battery does last longer throughout the day.
Even on the bad days I would get home and keep it running until I plug it in before I go to bed, so that's an average of about 17 hours in total per day that it's running on battery and on average I'd have like 30-40% battery left.
I was using an iPhone 4s before I bought the Vivid and I used to go home with about the same amount of battery after a full work day. Granted, the 4s gets worse battery life than the 4 by far, but I still think it's impressive that an Android phone, especially an HTC does this well and it makes me wonder why all of these people in the reviews have been getting such bad battery life.
It all depends on what it's relative to. When I had a BB, I'd go almost 5 days between charges, but there's no comparison between a BB and a 4.5" LCD screen.

This is a key point. The big screen is a huge battery sink. The battery widget in Beautiful Widgets gives a percentage battery use for components. With mine, the display's battery usage is always at least twice as big the next nearest battery sink. It is not uncommon to see that it is using 90% of the juice. I think this explains a lot of the early complaints about battery life. We all spend hours playing with a new phone and getting it set up to our liking. That means the display is lit up for hours. That means people get lousy battery life when they first get their phone.

I was trying to see how long I could go on a single charge. Airplane mode shut down radios that might otherwise continue to run, trying to pull data I would not see while asleep. Also, I would occasionally run the battery all the way down before recharging. I generally plug it in at work, in my car or at home when it gets down around 10% remaining.
