AT&T Tilt firmware upgrade - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

I recently purchased a mint condition used locked Tilt (running Windows Mobile 6.0) for my daughter who is using the device for SMS and phone only; she is using the phone on my AT&T family plan and has no Internet connectivity via the AT&T network although she does use WiFi connectivity while at home and school.
During the course of the first month of ownership she has mentioned that the phone has become unresponsive while typing SMS and sometimes it will just stop working.
I'm wondering if I should go ahead and install AT&T's Windows Mobile 6.1 but I'm very unsure how to proceed even though I've read the stickies. I've located the software update on the HTC site, however I've not read a concise step-by-step tutorial. I'm using a PC laptop running XP SP3 to perform the update.
I'd greatly appreciate someone (spinning me around) and pointing me in the correct direction or suggesting alternates to getting my daughter's phone functioning as well as possible.
Many thanks in advance!!!

I was hoping that at least one special person would provide some direction...no one???
Is there another board where I can post this question and except some direction?
Thanks again!

In the ROM development section, there is a great tutorial for flashing custom ROMs. The stock AT&T 6.1 ROM is a great place to start (download it from HTC's website if you haven't already). For that one all you have to do is plug in the phone and run the .exe on your PC, HTC has instructions for that.
Here's the tutorial for custom ROMs:

thanks Chambo622...
...I will use the stock AT&T 6.1 ROM and see if that cures the issues...I appreciate your assistance!

Just a quick post here, I dont know if the 6.1 will fix your daughters problem but when I went from 6.0 to 6.1 my keyboard did seem to work better. Prior to the upgrade to 6.1 my "L" was verrrry hard to get to respond, almost had to try to push it through the back of the phone to get it to register on the screen... after the upgrade to 6.1 its just a matter of pressing it like all the other keys... hope that is at least a little bit of encouragement...
Good Luck !

Coincidentally, I received notice of your feedback just as I was beginning the upgrade process from 6.0 > 6.1 so thanks for the confidence that the upgrade would solve the problem!
The upgrade went very smoothly and the non-responsive keyboard seems to be functioning perfectly so it looks like my daughter can resume her quest to send 5 figures of text messages per month!
Many thanks again to all for holding my hand!

HTC ROM 6.1 : the Kaiser freezes all the time !!!

Hello again, I have this big problem with my Kaiser :
since I installed the last HTC 6.1 ROM update, my device randomly freezes for 10-20 seconds.
I also noticed that my devices sometimes slow down ...
Does anyone else have this problem ?
The solution : Downgrade to WM6 !
I think I've found where the problem is :
since I stopped using "Quick Menu", the Kaiser does not freeze anymore ...
That means this is another usefull application I will have to stop using with the HTC 6.1 ROM !!!
Sorry but I don't know what is Quick menu...

If you don't know it, that means you didn't install it on your Kaiser. So your freeze problems were not coming from this application. Sorry ...
The biggest bug i've been with wm6.1 : my kaiser soft reset alone all the time ! Maybe they're drunk when they're built this rom lol ! They should have write : THE MAGIC FUNNY WM6.1 RELEASE WITH GHOST TOUCH !
I disabled Weather tab and contacts tab with HTC home customizer. It seems to work well now. I will see if problem has really gone. Thank you for your help Dizzy. You gave a direction to my searchs
You're welcome ... But I use HTC home mainly for its contact and weather application ... So it's not a solution for me.
I noticed that orange france users had problems. Perhaps it is linked with our SIM CARD...
do you really need to post two threads on this?
I thought about using HTC's rom, but instead, i used dutty's lite rom, and built it up myself with what i wanted. Its a hell of a,lot faster, i wouldnt touch another oem htc rom ever again, they are full of rubbish, and slow as my old wizard
Finally I discovered that the problem didn't come from "Quick Menu", but from "HTC home" !!!!!
HTC home does slown down my Kaiser and is responsible for randoms freezes of it !
If I disable "HTC home" on the today setup screen, then everything is faster (start menu display ...).
I re-installed Quick-menu and now my Kaiser is working fine.
I will have to replace HTC home by a clone application ...
I haven't had any issues with my Kaiser freezing with the 3.28.405.0 WWE ROM, but then I haven't used ROM that was oficially released by HTC. Instead I've been using the one that was leaked out a couple of days before the official release.
Is it possible that the official ROM image is corrupted in some way? I've noticed this post over in the Kaiser ROM Development forum, which was posted today:

I'm not the only one having trouble with 6.1. They said in the next two days there will be a "new" version available.
The file we could download now is corrupt and they will upload a non corrupt version. Supposedly the file was corrupt by uploading to ftp server
I think they will release a patched version.

I've installed the official (English) rom I got from someone in the UK (there is none for TYTN II from Hong Kong being used in the USA as of yet ) and loved the idea that all I had to do is just install ( No hard SPL ) and everything seems fine. I have a lot of apps. installed and everything is fine.
I upgraded to the leaked ROM and have had nothing but Freezing problems !!
I turned off HTC home and this seemed to do the job...for about 12 hours and then wouldnt you know it, its slow again.
I did a hard reset and turned everything off, used Kaiser tweaks to change the cache options and its still not right.
I feel badly let down by this product. I upgraded from a blackberry 8800 which ran like a dream, no problems. I've always been alittle sceptical about Windows Mobile Products. I've owned many PDAs in the past and have always felt that they were always compromised. My Dell Axim X51v was a good PDA but too bulky to carry around. I've always been someone who wasnt bothered by Windows Mobile Devices because of their windows hang ups. Seems I was proved right, though I know this isnt necessarily a Windows thing, more likely a HTC thing....it still doesnt help !
I needed a product that offered, office apps, with internet and the ability to FTP easily at high speeds either over WiFi or 3g. The Vario III had the lot including imense flexability which made me give up my Blackberry (which was a big thing, trust me as I adored my blackberry,,,it was just alittle limited).
After having purchased HTC's almost flagship model I've feel totally let down, they knowingly shipped a product that was flawed and then released a dodgy fix that affectively made the device worse (for some of us!). Freezing all the time. When it wasnt freezing it was a pleasure to use...but seriously, i'm 5 weeks into using it and I'm absolutely pee'd off. I seem to be constantly looking for fixes all the time !! my wife thinks I've become bloody addicted to it, she wont listen when i tell her I'm trying to fix it. it always seems to be in my hand !! (the kaiser that is )
That blackberry of mine is going to be taken out of the box and this paper weight will be used as just that.
gutted man
Ste
You need to remove the HardSPL application from your Kaiser in order to stop the freezes ... Take a look at this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=394783
It works ... Guaranteed !
Yes, the HardSPL is your problem, not HTC.
I tried the official htc e-club 6.1 and had lots of freezing issues. It would just freez for 20 seconds or so then start working again. Drove me crazy. I off-loaded it and re-loaded dutty's 6.1 hybrid and am very happy with it. Very stable, no more freezes either. I also reloaded mobile shell and found it to work much better than with the old 6.0. The memory issues, leaks etc. I had with shell on 6.0 seem to have become almost non-existant with this rom. And did I say batt life is heaven . I'm stickin' with what works for now.
I have the problem that Activesync is automatically turned on when I start the phone and it makes alot of problems but when I turn it off it usually solves it - anyone know how to fix this?

I had a similar issue where Activesync would start running on my phone every so many minutes, when looking in the task manager it would be running. I fixed that by running task manager v2.8 from Fdcsoft you can download it from here http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm with that go to notification and disable replog.exe (AppRunAfterTimeChange). This does not affect active sync working when connecting to a pc or with push email.

Phone Not Ready Wait 15 Seconds - One Solution

Have just upgraded my Wizard to WM6 I encountered a couple of problems along the way but the most frustrating by far was having everything perfect with the notable exception of being unable to send or receive text messages. Every time I tried to send I got the pop up to say "Phone not ready wait 15 seconds then try again"
THE FACTS
Its a G4
Originally sold as UK O2 XDA Mini S
Paid to unlock
Flashed to UK T-Mobile WM5 and used for work
Flashed to UK Orange WM5 and used for pleasure
Upgraded to the gorgeous (well I like it) SNN Diamond Edition ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=403096&highlight=SNN+Diamond
THE PROBLEMS
All RUU packages failed with a variety of error codes but the visible sign of failure was the display going blank and not firing up again. The solution was written in one of the upgrade guides "remove the SD card" (so glad I didn't post on that one. DOH!!) Read this it really helps http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard Windows Mobile 6 for newbies
The SD Card wasn't being recognised after upgrade. I couldn't be sure how I fixed that, it could have been one or more of the following:
Repeat ROM Upgrade
Hard Reset
Soft reset (5 times as it seems to speed everything up)
Switch off phone (hold down power button and say "Yes" when asked)
Insert SD
Power Up
Synch with ActiveSync 4.5 & Win XP (connection only so untick all the boxes)
Synch with Windows Mobile Device Centre and Vista
Remember to check the memory status (Start/Settings/System/Memory)
Well whadda you know, the SD card is recognised!
OK it's not scientific I'll grant you but if it helps someone then it wasn't wasted two finger typing time.
No text messages, after much searching and reading inconclusive threads I went for a Radio ROM Upgrade. I flashed 2.71.11 but have a look at the Wiki and take your pick from the 3 listed. Bingo!! http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard
CONCLUSION
Read everything before you begin, there is loads of information here, some of it conflicting which leads me on to ...
There's more than one way to skin a cat, maybe one guide might not work for your phone in your country with your Telco, just try another until you find a method that works for you. Absolutley DO NOT ignore the dire warnings though, Wizards are useful as paperweights but much more useful as PDA phones.
Don't expect much help from your service provider, Orange were strangely unhelpful when they found out I am using a phone they never sold in the UK with a cooked ROM and one of their SIMs that was sold with a Nokia Slide. Honestly, what do I pay these guys for!!
Don't despair, throw the darn thing through a window or, when confronted by a black screen, reach for the Big Hammer. Take out the battery, wait, put it back together and power up.
Do give thanks, to the guys and gals who give away their hard work in the form of cooked ROMS, who spend hours writing user guides and making screenshots, who build mini apps to simplify the process and who answer the same question a zillion times on the Forum.
Thanks Guys!!
Right, having got the Wizard running like a dream I have here in front of me an SPV C500 Typhoon and an SPV M600 Prophet. Oh and is that a Kaiser that work gave me, locked to T-Mobile, dare I?

Internet connection - USB/Bluetooth

Not sure how this has come about but I used to be able to connect to internet really easily through my work laptop when the TyTn II was connected by either Bluetooth or USB. Now I don't seem to be able to connect to either????
When connecting through USB I seem to be able to connect to the PC via 'Internet Sharing' which also lights up the 'Data Connection' icon but when I try to use IE it just says 'Cannot connect using current settings'. Thing is, I haven't changed anything and it used to work fine. Getting a bit fed up with the whole TyTn II at moment as I seem to spend more time fathoming why it's not doing what I want than doing it. Beginning to think a seperate phone/PDA may be best way ahead.
Unsure of whether the problem is related to the official 6.1 upgrade or the install of NoData (as I got fed up with accidentally hitting the weather and Quick GPS refresh and having the phone eat money).
Regardless of what I try I can't seem to get it to connect to internet albeit phone shows as connected via both Bluetooth or USB.
Short of solving this (and I'm not sure where to start) I'm temted to do a reflash and leave out things like No Data etc etc and just see if it works again. Bit of a nuisance really.
Tried searching all manner of related topics but no joy so far
It is a problem with the WM 6.1 official HTC update
I had exactly the same problem in reverse with my TyTN II when it was running the WM 6.1 (the same official HTC ROM that you have). By 'in reverse' I mean I couldn't initially do internet related things on the TyTN II using my home internet (either via USB or Bluetooth connection). It was fine before but after the upgrade thats when the problem occurred. I didn't have any additional software installed apart from Tomtom Navigator 6.032 (HTC Version) so I don't think your NoData install will be to blame (at least not solely). I did manage to get pocket IE working under these circumstances though after I had a fiddle around in the connections tab under settings - or was it Activesyncs settings.... I could never get the automatic Quick GPS updates to occur though, even under those settings and I still had to manually update (although it did use the home internet connection when I did this).
I remember that I changed a drop down selection from something along the lines of this device is connected to 'Auto' to make it 'The Internet'. Sorry for being so vague but I've now reverted to the original WM 6.0 ROM (more precisely I had HTC do it for free under the warranty) and none of the options I'm looking at now ring any bells. Perhaps someone else recalls more clearly what settings change is required.
I think the most important part of your post is:

Thats how I felt about the HTC upgrade that wasn't. I was quick to go down the upgrade path but since it's been back with WM 6.0 other than a few uncommanded resets in the first day or two which haven't since reoccured, the device is now rock solid again. Of course it'd be nice to think the latest HTC upgrade didn't introduce more problems than were already present but in my experience their current update is more trouble than it's worth (and you haven't even mentioned GPS). If you decide you want it reverted under warranty, I found the HTC Repair Centre (at least here in the UK) to do a fine job of it. I dropped off my phone in the morning, after booking it in over ther phone the day before and it was ready at the end of the same day.

Or you can always download the original shipped roms here off the wiki and flash it yourself. It only takes about 10 minutes. You dont have to download a special SPL for an OEM rom

I was tempted to do that myself (and even asked HTC for the downgrade file to do so) but there are a couple of issues for those of us that like to keep things 'HTC Official'. A big one for me is that since HTC was responsible for creating the buggy WM 6.1 ROM, they should also accept responsibility for fixing it (fat chance of that, I agree with what -888- wrote in the WM 6.0 vs. WM 6.1 thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=432482&page=4 along the lines of the best developers being assigned to the latest and greatest products). If they're not going to fix it, then they should at least revert the device to a reliable state. I was in a fortunate position to be in the area of the HTC Repair Centre but if it means sending the phone away, I understand why some might prefer the DIY option.

There's alot to digest about ROM (and Radio and spl) flashing in the wiki and that takes much more than 10 mins. Although a special spl such as hardSPL isn't used with the HTC official setups, the spl does need to be reverted from the 3.28 version with the official WM 6.1 WWE, back to a 1.xx version with WM 6.0 for proper functioning. That isn't just a simple case of running the RUU program like the upgrade to WM 6.1 was - it has to be manually reverted (presumably using something like jumpSPL and the procedure in the wiki for restoring a device for warranty purposes) so it gets more complicated. I was expecting spl version something along the lines of 1.56 on my WM 6.0 setup (to match the ROM numbers) but they installed 1.93, presumably because it was more reliable or offered other performance benifits. Perhaps the ideal spl is in the package already but again this cant just be run like the WM 6.1 upgrade was so there's some jiggery pokery involved
I tend to agree. Not sure why I really bothered with 6.1. One of the first things I did was use Kaiser Tweaks to turn threaded SMS off.
I didn't realise that reverting to WM 6.0 would require more than reflashing so that makes it a little more problematic. I'm not near a HTC Centre. The whole device certainly seems more buggy under 6.1 than it did before and this internet through laptop problem is a nuisance. Being fairly unimpressed with Co-Pilot I don't use GPS that much and, withe the aside that i think I've used the keyboard twice since I had it (another 'essential' I'd put on my list for phone/PDA attributes), I'm beginning to wonder if return to factor state and sell it might not be the better option, reverting to a Nokia E51 and Ipaq 214 Enterprise combination
Post is an option.

Of course it's up to you but don't forget that even though you may not be near a HTC Repair Centre, you could still call them up on the phone to make the booking and post the device to them once you've arranged to have it reverted. They should do it for free but confirm this so you don't get any unpleasant surprises.

HTC Tytn II freezes few seconds

Hi all,
First of all, let me wish you all a happy 2009
Since a few days my HTC Tytn II freezes sometimes: During several seconds I can't select items using the Stylus.. Even if i tap several times, nothing happens. It usually freezes for 2-3 seconds, not more.
I'm using the 6.1 ROM. I already tried a hard reset, and even without any additional programs installed, the problem occurs every now and then.
Anyone has an idea?
-moose
I've had this happen to me as well, but thought it normal just because of the OS being Windows. Sorry I don't really have an answer I'm learning all this stuff as well but did want to at least acknowledge your not the only one with this as an issue.
ok, but is it exactly what I'm experiencing? It's not always the case, only sometimes.. And I can't tell beforehand when it's going to happen actually.
I don't have lots of programs open when the problem occurs..
Par for the course with HTCs WM 6.1 'upgrade'
I had that problem with the HTC supplied WM 6.1 upgrade ROM (along with general unreliability and poor GPS performance). Reverting back to the WM 6.0 ROM/Radio/SPL seems to have cured those issues. Now the only problem I have is an occasionally laggy keyboard (or if I install the laggy keyboard fix here on xda-dev, then occasional pausing during media such as video and mp3 playback - haven't figured out how to solve both). I suspect your pausing is associated with radio/reception activity. Try turning it to flight mode as a test and see if it still occurs (not that the device is much use like this, but it will pinpoint the cause).
HI,
Thanks for reply. Do you know if there's an official (supported by HTC) way to revert back to the old windows?
I indeed upgraded recently to 6.1, and it seems that problems started after the upgrade.
You could complain and get HTC to do it

If your phone is still under warranty then just speak with the HTC Repair Centre for your area (in the UK they're in Milton Keynes). In my case because the GPS under WM 6.1 wouldn't work properly (and I was having the other problems you described), when I told them I needed a prompt solution they offered to revert it for free. After booking it in through their call centre, I left it with the repair centre in the morning and it was done at the end of that day. No there is no official way to do it yourself (even though one HTC call centre staffmember tried to tell me there was - the RUU package he referred me to was only for upgrading from even older WM 6.0 ROMs or reflashing over the same WM 6.0 setup, not reverting back from WM 6.1). There are unofficial ways as per instructions in the wiki so if you're not near to one of their repair centres (or object to the delay/costs involved with postage), then thats an option but make sure you know what you're doing first.
Assuming you have a European WWE HTC branded TyTN II, the setup in my sig seems to be working pretty well here in the UK.
The cure for this is to use the kaiser unlocker and unlock your phone. You will probably have to re-flash your radio after that but this fixed it for me. I only experienced after upgrading to 6.1.

I don't think thats an issue associated with any lock on the phone (although perhaps a lock may make it worse). My HTC branded TyTN II came totally unlocked to start with and after the WM 6.1 upgrade the problems came, after reverting to WM 6.0, they went - the solution seems simple to me if people can get past the 'against the grain thinking' of using an 'old' ROM for greater reliability.

I will confirm that this is happening on a HTC Branded unlocked TyTN II. I have had no experience with 6.0 on my TyTN II, as my phone came with 6.1 installed and exhibits the above mentioned behavior.

no four colored boot screen?

Hi guys..
I'm using O2 XDA IIs, and I'm trying to upgrade to WM 6.5.
I've downloaded the ROM and other misc applications to upgrade, and also read the walkthrough in the XDAdevelopers Wiki page. But I find my device have no four colored boot screen but instead an O2 image with some color information as such :
Code:
R : 1.02.00
G : 1337.32
B : 1.31.00 WWE
in the bottom right of my screen. I also can't see the four colored screen with options to format storage which is one of the point mentioned in the upgrade section.
That's why I've been hesitating to upgrade it since I have this phone, because I can't follow the upgrade walkthrough completely which might caused my phone to brick.
Anyone can help?
Thanks
the four colour boot screen is a bug/feature of any cooked rom, meaning any wm5 and higher rom, you can download here. since you are still using the stock rom it is normal to have a carrier's boot screen. it will go away once you upgraded your device.
since the wiki is quite outdated, you should follow the tutorial link in my signature. it will provide you with the newest step by step instructions, that i wrote with a lot of user feedback, to make sure, people would understand it correctly, at some points, the wiki instructions are mistakable.
also, while i really appreciate being cautious (since it is always easier to guide in before, than to repair afterwards), you shouldn't worry about bricking the device. if you follow the tutorial word by word, there should be no risk of failing to upgrade. and even if an upgrade fails, you can always start over again.
Just read all the tutorial firstto have some sense of it, and the follow it while doingthe upgrade. Make sure that your battery is at least 50% charged and you'll be good to go.
Good luck and if you have questions, please post them in the q&a thread...
Good luck

thanks for the help chef..
I've visited the link on your signature, and it really helps. unfortunately, I'm using Vista in my notebook. since there's no guide for that in your thread, should I just try the steps for Vista user mentioned in the wiki? or should I just find another computer with windows XP on it? I already have the Windows Mobile Device Center installed on my notebook by the way.
also, there are some other things I'd like to know. I've tried putting my device into bootloader mode by pressing power + record button and then reset. but there's nothing changed, just looks like a normal soft reset. is it really supposed to looks like that? or there's something wrong with me or my device?
and when I do the hard reset, just like I've mentioned above, there's no menu appears. is the menu also part of bug in the cooked ROM and not supposed to appear in the carrier's boot screen?
thanks for the answer.

btw, sorry if my English is mixed up. it's not my primary language, so please endure with my bad English.
for the bootloader mode, you might have to press and hold the power+record button a little longer while resetting and only release them, when the display is grey and shows SERIAL on top and v2.0x (where x is between 5 and 7) at the bottom.
the mentioned hard reset method is also only suitable for windows mobile 5 and higher. for windows mobile 2003 a hard reset is done by simply pressing power+reset (also maybe holding the power button for a second). there is no hard reset necessary before the upgrade, but afterwards, and then, using a higher rom, you will have the 4 coloured screen with the menu. there is really no way to make a dry run on this.
as a first time upgrader it would be much easier for you to use a windows xp machine. it simply works because activesync provides all the necessary drivers, for syncing (of course), and also for flashing, while on vista/7 you have to replace the driver with a custom one depending on your version (x86 or x64). those drivers are not digitally signed, which, especially on x64 machines means more trouble to go through. in d-two's thread, you will find a how-to for vista/7 flashing if you find no other way. i think that is just an option for experienced windows and blueangel users, that are already running a cooked rom and want to change to another one. with a first time upgrade you have so much stuff to read through, so many more steps to actually prepare the device for the first time upgrade... xp would be your better choice.

thanks for the help chef..

There is a set of instructions for Vista in the wiki (the ones you are referring to). They seem to work well afaik, but I agree with Chef... do it from a XP computer to avoid any issues.
Bootloader (the easiest way) is to hold power +record and then put the stylus in the hole. Doing the three of them at the same time might not get you anywhere. For the hard reset (WM5 and up), you can simply use the stylus and as soon as you get the stylus out, hold the two side buttons (camera/WMP and record) and you'll be able to see the options mentioned by Chef.
Good luck!
thanks for all the help, both of you..
I finally upgraded my BA to WM 6.5, and it turns to be a success. I'm using the steps from wiki to upgrade in vista since it's hard to find someone who's using XP in my neighborhood.
Nothing's wrong until I tried to send SMS messages. I can't either send or receive any SMS's. The messages are delivered to me but it doesn't appear in inbox, only in today screen notification. Fortunately, the other function works really well, the phone, GPRS, bluetooth, ad even the wi-fi.
I'll upload the screenshots later when I'm using my notebook since the internet fee using GPRS in my country is really expensive.
Can I reflash using another ROM? or is there something I can do to fix the problem?
oh, and another thing : my USB active sync can't work. Should I reinstall the WMDC or what?
thanks for the support guys.

Most of those issues sound like issues present in my rom. Is that the one you flashed? If so, it would be wise to flash to something else... I never really got that rom working the way I wanted... Go with 28232 or one of d-two's releases.

excellent!
I've flashed with the latest ROM from Sun Dream. and it works superb!
there are lots of changes from my previous ROM. the today's screen, start menu, and the buttons position (the start button is on the top of the screen previously, and now it's in the bottom. )
well, the only problem I encounter is that I can't sync with WMDC on my Vista.

You have to use a newer driver which if I am not mistaken comes with WMDC 6.1
