no four colored boot screen? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hi guys..
I'm using O2 XDA IIs, and I'm trying to upgrade to WM 6.5.
I've downloaded the ROM and other misc applications to upgrade, and also read the walkthrough in the XDAdevelopers Wiki page. But I find my device have no four colored boot screen but instead an O2 image with some color information as such :
Code:
R : 1.02.00
G : 1337.32
B : 1.31.00 WWE
in the bottom right of my screen. I also can't see the four colored screen with options to format storage which is one of the point mentioned in the upgrade section.
That's why I've been hesitating to upgrade it since I have this phone, because I can't follow the upgrade walkthrough completely which might caused my phone to brick.
Anyone can help?
Thanks

the four colour boot screen is a bug/feature of any cooked rom, meaning any wm5 and higher rom, you can download here. since you are still using the stock rom it is normal to have a carrier's boot screen. it will go away once you upgraded your device.
since the wiki is quite outdated, you should follow the tutorial link in my signature. it will provide you with the newest step by step instructions, that i wrote with a lot of user feedback, to make sure, people would understand it correctly, at some points, the wiki instructions are mistakable.
also, while i really appreciate being cautious (since it is always easier to guide in before, than to repair afterwards), you shouldn't worry about bricking the device. if you follow the tutorial word by word, there should be no risk of failing to upgrade. and even if an upgrade fails, you can always start over again.

Just read all the tutorial firstto have some sense of it, and the follow it while doingthe upgrade. Make sure that your battery is at least 50% charged and you'll be good to go.
Good luck and if you have questions, please post them in the q&a thread...
Good luck

thanks for the help chef..
I've visited the link on your signature, and it really helps. unfortunately, I'm using Vista in my notebook. since there's no guide for that in your thread, should I just try the steps for Vista user mentioned in the wiki? or should I just find another computer with windows XP on it? I already have the Windows Mobile Device Center installed on my notebook by the way.
also, there are some other things I'd like to know. I've tried putting my device into bootloader mode by pressing power + record button and then reset. but there's nothing changed, just looks like a normal soft reset. is it really supposed to looks like that? or there's something wrong with me or my device?
and when I do the hard reset, just like I've mentioned above, there's no menu appears. is the menu also part of bug in the cooked ROM and not supposed to appear in the carrier's boot screen?
thanks for the answer.

yes, I've always searched for more and more informations before doing something this risky. I'll visit the Q&A thread after posting this reply. thanks for the support.

btw, sorry if my English is mixed up. it's not my primary language, so please endure with my bad English.

for the bootloader mode, you might have to press and hold the power+record button a little longer while resetting and only release them, when the display is grey and shows SERIAL on top and v2.0x (where x is between 5 and 7) at the bottom.
the mentioned hard reset method is also only suitable for windows mobile 5 and higher. for windows mobile 2003 a hard reset is done by simply pressing power+reset (also maybe holding the power button for a second). there is no hard reset necessary before the upgrade, but afterwards, and then, using a higher rom, you will have the 4 coloured screen with the menu. there is really no way to make a dry run on this.
as a first time upgrader it would be much easier for you to use a windows xp machine. it simply works because activesync provides all the necessary drivers, for syncing (of course), and also for flashing, while on vista/7 you have to replace the driver with a custom one depending on your version (x86 or x64). those drivers are not digitally signed, which, especially on x64 machines means more trouble to go through. in d-two's thread, you will find a how-to for vista/7 flashing if you find no other way. i think that is just an option for experienced windows and blueangel users, that are already running a cooked rom and want to change to another one. with a first time upgrade you have so much stuff to read through, so many more steps to actually prepare the device for the first time upgrade... xp would be your better choice.

There is a set of instructions for Vista in the wiki (the ones you are referring to). They seem to work well afaik, but I agree with Chef... do it from a XP computer to avoid any issues.
Bootloader (the easiest way) is to hold power +record and then put the stylus in the hole. Doing the three of them at the same time might not get you anywhere. For the hard reset (WM5 and up), you can simply use the stylus and as soon as you get the stylus out, hold the two side buttons (camera/WMP and record) and you'll be able to see the options mentioned by Chef.
Good luck!

thanks for all the help, both of you..
I finally upgraded my BA to WM 6.5, and it turns to be a success. I'm using the steps from wiki to upgrade in vista since it's hard to find someone who's using XP in my neighborhood.
Nothing's wrong until I tried to send SMS messages. I can't either send or receive any SMS's. The messages are delivered to me but it doesn't appear in inbox, only in today screen notification. Fortunately, the other function works really well, the phone, GPRS, bluetooth, ad even the wi-fi.
I'll upload the screenshots later when I'm using my notebook since the internet fee using GPRS in my country is really expensive.
Can I reflash using another ROM? or is there something I can do to fix the problem?
oh, and another thing : my USB active sync can't work. Should I reinstall the WMDC or what?
thanks for the support guys.

Most of those issues sound like issues present in my rom. Is that the one you flashed? If so, it would be wise to flash to something else... I never really got that rom working the way I wanted... Go with 28232 or one of d-two's releases.

excellent!
I've flashed with the latest ROM from Sun Dream. and it works superb!
there are lots of changes from my previous ROM. the today's screen, start menu, and the buttons position (the start button is on the top of the screen previously, and now it's in the bottom. )
well, the only problem I encounter is that I can't sync with WMDC on my Vista.

You have to use a newer driver which if I am not mistaken comes with WMDC 6.1

Stuck after ROM flash:error 206

I decided to reflash my wizard after it continually getting slower and slower after a year. I haven't done it in awhile. It is already unlocked. I flashed the 1.05 rom and it was working. I was going to go up in steps ending with the touch rom. I flashed the wrong rom evidently and now am downgraded to 1.01 on spl/ipl and os 2.26.10.2. The wizard won't activate Activesync and I can't get any communication. I tried rebooting the pc and the wizard multiple times. Still nothing. Need something quick to fix this. Everytime I tried to launch a rom flash I get an error 206.

If it was already CID unlocked, there was no need to downgrade again 1.05,once CID unlocked will remain unlocked forever, unless you intentionally don't flash back the locking code back on to it.
Now try to get into Bootloaders (multicolor screen) hook up the phone with pc via usb cable and check small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders,if it appears then download the official stock rom and flash to recover back to the default status, then download the WST 4.2.2 tool and run the 'CID Action' button to verify the CID lock/unlock status of the phone.if its still CID unlocked then upgrade to any wm6 rom of your choice, otherwise perform the unlocking method again. If the usb doesn't appear, then you have a connectivity problem, check the usb cable or the mini usb port of the phone is faulty.Assuming you are doing on winXP.
"and check small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders..."
I don't understand what your talking about when you say bootloader. The bootloader is the ROM installation program is it not. How do you check an icon in that? If you mean system trays on the PC or PDA, no USB icon shows. I got no radio or sync services working. The OS is corrupted and operates extremely slow. I can't get any kind of communication between the PDA and PC. Not even through windows explorer (running XP). It's not the cable, I just used it to downgrade to 1.05 and it was working fine. It wasn't until I tried to upgrade to back up, and selected the wrong ROM off my USB storage, that it flashed the wrong ROM and caused all this. Mostly because I hate trying to remember what the longs string of digits mean on each ROM. Especially after I haven't looked at all the files and haven't done a flash in a year.
So no communication. That's the issue.
So does anyone else have any info? As I stated, I can't get any communication between the MDA and the PC. So I don't know how I can flash a stable ROM.
I repeat again,Get the phone in Bootloaders mode (multicolor screen) by pressing and keep holding down the camera button and at the same time either 'Soft Reset' or 'Power On' the phone, but keep holding down the camera button, till phone boots up in Bootloaders mode(multicolor screen),hook up the phone with pc via usb cable and check if small usb appears "At the bottom of the Bootloaders Screen" and not in the system tray of the pc. If it appears then follow the advise I gave you in my above post, but if doesn't appear then you have a connectivity problem.

The Wiki as all the (basic) info to get you started.
It doesn't work
I can get into Bootloaders mode with usb at the bottom. BUT, I can't get any connection to ActiveSync, any of the ROM update utilities and no radio network connections. That was the specific thing I'm telling you. If the Desktop and the PDA won't talk to each other, what am I gonna do? It's not the cable either. The Wizard Tool will not pick it up either when I used it to try to get device info. If your going suggest any kind of ROM or software off the forum, please specify exact version and title so I don't have to go through 100+ pages doing a search to find a specific piece of software off a vague title such as "stock ROM". You may know what it means because your always on the forum. When someone hasn't been back here in awhile they aren't going to remember some arbitrary string of numbers and letters indicating a certain ROM that they haven't used for a year. Too many of you "regulars" get all pissy about things when someone asks a question. If someone keeps asking the same questions, it's because the forum is NOT laid out in an easily searchable fashion unless you have specific search criteria for things such as CUSTOM_RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_10111210_WWE instead of "stock ROM".
Have you read the Wiki?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard Windows Mobile 6 for newbies
Or other posts?
You'd know by now that in bootloader mode ActiveSync or any other tool (that uses ActiveSync) can't communicate with the phone but that it's possible to upgrade a ROM using the official upgrade utilities.
Have you tried making a search and getting hundreds of undesired and repeated posts which makes you lose days searching for a specific thing?
If you'd been here as long as many of us you'd also be tired of people asking same questions. I was once a fresh member and i would always 'waste' my time than others'.
Also the forum search feature has been enhanced by using Google's search engine instead of internal.
There is simply no way I can express my deep and sincere gratitude for the information available in this forum. Let me explain and I think you may understand why.
Several days ago my wife and I received a couple of HTC 8125's from Ebay. Being a tinkerer I wanted to see what I could do so I upgraded mine to Mobile 6 with Touch-Flo.
The wife was skeptical and waited to see how it worked out. Of course she eventually decided to go for the Bling and handed me hers to upgrade as well.
As soon as the upgrade started on hers the pda went bootscreen and locked up. Sooooo I'm sweating bullets and searching the forums as fast as I can go before she finds out. Then I find this thread and the last post... Don't need Activesync to update as long as the device pops up a little usb on the screen when you plug up... I flashed the 8125 upgrade and *Bang*! Back in business. Continued the upgrade and all is well. The wife is now walking around with her "Bling" and happy and I am off the hook!
Thanks for the GREAT FORUM!

NEWBIE- I read the Vista Rom Upgrade threads but still need help

Hi, I have an HTC 8125, and I desperetely want to flash it with a WM 6 ROM, But I only have Vista, and I am having so much trouble following the threads on doing this with Vista, that I am going to have to give up if I don't get some advice. I have downloaded the Wizard Tool, but it won't ever recognize that my phone is connected, even though Mobile Device Center says "connected". I tried using the program HARD SPL G4, but when it makes the screen go white on my wizard, mobile device center automatically says not connected, and at that point even though I get the screens to proceed with the new Rom, they dont work because my phone is no longer connected and nothing that I do lets it connect to mobile device center while the screen is white. I have to reset the phone and then the rom update doesnt work anymore.
Please help, even if it is pointing me to a topic or post that I don't know about. I have spent 12 hours reading and failing over and over with this.
Simple answer to all of your problems is Vista,Do it on a WinXP machine there won't be any problems.
Although, its possible to unlock and flash through Vista, but its still not compatible,WinXP is highly recommended.

Need Help with Update

I have had a good read in the forum and I am still missing the big picture.
I currently have a generic UK from a flash I did several months ago and my phone works like a super star. However, I am very interested in updating my X1. I have tried to update the old fashioned way (se update service), but i get an error message stating 'device not recognized', or something to that effect. I am guessing this is due to the generic uk flash.
I have no problem doing the update myself, but I really need some help. Could someone either send me a link or explain step by step (like I was five years old) exactly what I need to do.
Also, I am using a new pc (vista) with WM device center 32bit already installed. So I will need any files for complete update.
Lastly, are there any other updates worth the time?
Thank you very much in advance
I had the same "device not recognised" issue in SEUS. Forever.
Are you logged in as a user? If so, log in as the administrator - when I did that it worked a treat first time!
I have the same problem
Hi there,
I have the exact same problem as fm1776 with theese only 2 differences:
1: I have never flashed my rom, it is from the first batch made bought first day of release in Sweden (where it usually comes early for Sony Ericsson)
2: My Vista is 64-bit. (Which should not matter because it´s a separate 64-bit installer, I think we can forget this)
I am Administrator so unfortunately that did not work for me, also the update service is running as admin.
My Mobile device center works perfectly and syncs my x1 flawlessly since first install.
I have read nearly every single thread on the internet related to this trying to get this worked out since early this year with no success and now decided to post.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything from the unknown device in device manager to Mobile device center including the extra driver. I have also tried all combinations of settings in the MDC regarding allowing usb-connections etc etc... I have tried 3 different cables on different USB-ports and different USB-hubs (the internal "usb-root-hubs" in the list view) and also have the exact same problem on my other computer. (Laptop running exactly same OS). No windows updates missing and antivirus has also been disabled for troubleshooting. Update service reinstalled 5 times +, sometimes all theese steps at the same time.
Please please someone help me, I work IT-support and have solved problems like this at least 20 times over the last few years even the early M600 problems. But this time, it it just out of my league. I have no idea what to do no more and it seem to work for everyone beside me and fm above - if the ordinary sync is working that is, otherwise the net is full of theese problems it seems.
My phone really needs this with its constant different exe-crashes and sometimes slow behaviour.
It would also be interesting to hear if there are more people with the exact same problem. Fully working MDC-sync but unknown device in device manager (USB-device not recognized) when trying to upgrade.
In hopes of a resolution for this otherwise great phone which I use to it´s full extent 16 hrs a day...

well you could just bypass SEUS completely and download any rom from this forum (be it a cooked one or an official one) then flash it through the Memory card method!
How can you flash if your volume down button does not work?
Just want to say thank you Jonny for your input.
My Xperia is all of a sudden running Windows Mobile 6.5 and it´s smoother than ever =)
I used the SD-card update as you suggested and it worked out the first time after some reading...

Fast ROM
If you have not tried it yet, I suggest that you try the ROM created by Smaberg and NRGZ28 Energy ROM and i bet you that you'll be amazed at how fast and beautiful their ROM's are.

Stuck on serial and version 2.08

Hi please help me , i'm stuck in boot loader mode trying to update my rom to windows 6.1 , i have vista on my computer .
I searched the forum but cant find any useful help.
I know lot many had this problem and have got sorted out , so please help me with clear instructions.
Thanks in advance,
shank
since you are using vista, it is very unlikely, that your device is actually stuck in bootloader mode, it was your pc, causing that error. because the device changes its identity, while upgrading, vista (and windows 7) seem to think, it is necessary to look for new drivers. maybe you saw the driver search in the bottom right corner of the task bar.
so, basicly you have 2 options to get your device back, either you get to a pc with xp and perform the upgrade properly, or you try the vista method.
for the xp way, have a look here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardUpgrade1_WM2003SE0
that is the first step in the tutorial on how to upgrade and i bet you didn't do that in your first attempt
for the vista way, refer to this page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardUpgrade4_Vista
or if you want it in pictures, this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardUpgrade4_Vista_Pic
i personally never got the vista way to work, not in vista home premium 32, nor in ultimate 64, and in windows 7 ultimate 64 it does not work for me neither.
the very best you can do in your situation is, try the vista method, and either it works, than proceed with the wizard i gave you as the xp link, or get to an xp computer and start with the wizard right away.
if your device really is stuck in bootloader (still unlikely), post back, and we try mtty
got the same problem but am working under windows 7 x64 so it willl be a serious issue
neverdmind fixed worked on my laptop with xp
I am still stuck
Can do nothing. Have this message on the screen and even then I try to connect it to my Vista there is no connection.
Is it that ****ty or something can be done
welcome to the forum!
your problem starts with v and ends with a (like so many evil things do): vista. ok, that was off, sorry, let's get to the facts now:
this is probably what you have experienced during the unlucky attempt to upgrade your device:
you start upgrading, everything looks fine, your pc's RUU (the rom upgrade utility, what you used to start the upgrade) is working fine, your device's screen said usb and v2.0X and then "upgrading" but then at some point, your pc said, "wait a minute, this is not the device i am used to, i cannot charge or sync it, and it also does not respond with the usual name!" so, vista is as 'smart' as trying to get a new driver for the device, making the sounds of a usb device unplugging, and a new one plugging in, that's when your connection is lost, and that is bad, because the wizzard told you before, to "never unplug the device, unless the upgrade process is over". you see, what happened there?
vista's ability, to make driver installation easier for the user has become bad for you in this situation, as you were relying on, say, windows xp's stubbornness.
ok, you say, why would he tell me all that? i saw that happening!
yes, but now you know what caused the problem. now we get on to solving it.
there is a nice tutorial in the wiki, where you can find a driver for vista x86 and x64, that will behave like the xp driver used to, it will charge the device, sync it, and still be able to upgrade, you find the wiki entry -=here=-, and -=here=- again with screenshots.
when you arrived at successfully having installed the driver, so making the screen on connection change from serial to usb, without vista searching for new drivers, you arrived at the point, from where on you can continue, or better restart, flashing the rom you originally intended to.
but let me say, after breaking rule 1, when it comes to flashing, may i advice you to read a little more about the general topic in the link -=here=-, because i can guarantee you, that that was not the last mistake you made with the upgrading process, and since you probably don't want to start from scratch again in a few days, you should ask yourself these questions:
have i formatted the extrom?
have i resized the partitions to gain storage space?
do i have a proper RUU?
did i pick the right rom?
what about sim unlock?
what about radio rom update?
do i know how to reset a device with a higher os than wm2003?
if to either of these questions, your answer was not a clear "yes!!", but a "no" or even "what is he talking about?" you should definetely make a little research before starting over, because you are breaking hardware limitations here, doing things, htc originally intended trained service professionals to do, not home users, this is something that could break your device or at least cost you a lot of time to repair, when done wrong, so please read the links i gave you, it will save a lot of your nerves. here you are again, -=the most important link=-
and -=another link with a common misunderstanding cleared up=-
have fun reading, you won't regret it.

AT&T Tilt firmware upgrade

I recently purchased a mint condition used locked Tilt (running Windows Mobile 6.0) for my daughter who is using the device for SMS and phone only; she is using the phone on my AT&T family plan and has no Internet connectivity via the AT&T network although she does use WiFi connectivity while at home and school.
During the course of the first month of ownership she has mentioned that the phone has become unresponsive while typing SMS and sometimes it will just stop working.
I'm wondering if I should go ahead and install AT&T's Windows Mobile 6.1 but I'm very unsure how to proceed even though I've read the stickies. I've located the software update on the HTC site, however I've not read a concise step-by-step tutorial. I'm using a PC laptop running XP SP3 to perform the update.
I'd greatly appreciate someone (spinning me around) and pointing me in the correct direction or suggesting alternates to getting my daughter's phone functioning as well as possible.
Many thanks in advance!!!
I was hoping that at least one special person would provide some direction...no one???
Is there another board where I can post this question and except some direction?
Thanks again!
In the ROM development section, there is a great tutorial for flashing custom ROMs. The stock AT&T 6.1 ROM is a great place to start (download it from HTC's website if you haven't already). For that one all you have to do is plug in the phone and run the .exe on your PC, HTC has instructions for that.
Here's the tutorial for custom ROMs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
thanks Chambo622...
...I will use the stock AT&T 6.1 ROM and see if that cures the issues...I appreciate your assistance!
Just a quick post here, I dont know if the 6.1 will fix your daughters problem but when I went from 6.0 to 6.1 my keyboard did seem to work better. Prior to the upgrade to 6.1 my "L" was verrrry hard to get to respond, almost had to try to push it through the back of the phone to get it to register on the screen... after the upgrade to 6.1 its just a matter of pressing it like all the other keys... hope that is at least a little bit of encouragement...
Good Luck !

Good Luck !

Coincidentally, I received notice of your feedback just as I was beginning the upgrade process from 6.0 > 6.1 so thanks for the confidence that the upgrade would solve the problem!
The upgrade went very smoothly and the non-responsive keyboard seems to be functioning perfectly so it looks like my daughter can resume her quest to send 5 figures of text messages per month!
Many thanks again to all for holding my hand!
