Hello again community,
I am runnin the latest cyanogen rom, at a constant 528mhz with compcache enabled, and no apps2sd. While holding my girlfriends g1 with the stock rom, comparing the two, I can't believe how much quicker hers is than mine. Whether it be switching pages on the home screen, viewing settings in any app and the phones as well, scrolling through contacts, whatever it be... her phone seems to much quicker than mine. She even has more pictures and feeds on her homescreen than mine. Why is this? I'm constantly clearing java memory with memoryforlemmings and closing all apps (except for homescreen) with taskmanager. Should I try clearning anything like dalvik? Or reinstall the rom, wipe it and start all over? Any suggestions would be really appreciated, I'm pretty frusterated..
Thanks in advanced,
Mike.
Edit: Also, I forgot the reason why I'm most frustrated, her browser is blazin. Almost up there with the cliq. Mine, not so much.

Get apps2sd, stop running at sonstant 528 thats silly do this instead. If you have setcpu or OC widget use these clocks:
Screen On:
Max-512 or 384(i use 384)
min-128
Screen Off:
Max-256
min- 128
Also try using a wesenger rom its faster than a standard cyanogen because of zipalign & ram-hack and other things..Try using no compache also, should notice a difference though.
Wow, after the rom install, what a difference on the home screen and browser. Maybe I'm just feelin it off the reboot, but if it stays like this.. ace I can't thank you enough. But I have one more question. I don't have that many apps, and I've never done apps2sd.. but will it really increase my phones speed? Thanks again!
Edit: And on cpu freq. I have a huge battery that I couldn't run out if I tried, so running at 528 doesn't hurt that. But its not gonna effect performance in a negetive way is it?
apps2sd will not increase your phone's speed. It will allow you to install more apps without running out of room. As many apps as your ext partition will hold--which, with even a 512Mb partition, is more than you could ever reasonably install, even if you always installed everything that looked even remotely fun or useful.
And no, setting your cpu to always max will not hurt performance. It helps performance. But the improvement is very minimal, at the cost of huge battery drain, and wear on your cpu. But, if you have a huge battery, go for it.
Hi, I was wondering if I can use the 10 mb ram hack with my g1 with CM 6.0 RC2. I noticed most of the tutoriials are using 4.xx.xx so I wanted to ask before I do it. My phone is kind of slow even though it is overclocked at 576mhz and 64 mb class 6 memory swap. Thanks.

There is no 10 mb hack and won't be. It is not possible with Froyo.
As indicated above there is no 10mb hack and there never will be.
I am currently using the latest nightly and it is super fast and stable. As fast as donut (no ****).
3D Gallery works perfectly and there have been a bunch of small cool features added to the nightly.
I highly recommend it.
Awesome work has been done by Cyanogen and Crew.
ok thanks for the reply guys. Is there any other way to make my rom faster? Thanks.

Of course reduce or remove swap,
android has it's own swap mechanism that causes little ram to actually be least recently used, thus if swap is enabled the phone will be constantly swapping it in/out!
In addition to reducing the life of the SD card its slow. I understand a very little bit of swap *may* allow some edge cases where a *little* more ram is needed or to offload something like launcher that may be configured to stay in ram to work faster.. however you can't forget the speed issue.
Try this enter console on your phone and run:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/sdcard/swapspeedtest bs=1048576 of=64
Note the time it takes, that is the time to write 64mb on a swap out operation.. if it seems too long to wait for a task its too much swap. 12mb is almost acceptable. I just stick to comp cache only. . Upped it from the default 12 to 15 MB since I had one or two tasks that just needed a tad more memory to play nice.
Also what is slow, returning to home? A particular app? I doubt its everything, usually its launcher and there are ways of locking it in home, upgrades to awd, and alternative launchers. These may help.

Thanks for the detailed response! I will try lowering the swap partition, I always thought it would be fast because of the class 6 speeds. Does putting all my apps on SD make it slow as well? Also, returning to home is the main lag I'm talking about as it takes quite a while to see my apps. Thank you!

I have about 3-5 apps that I would like to be running at one time? Should I be using CompCache or Swap? Currently I am on SuperD 1.9.3 WGK. I have been reluctant to run Froyo roms because they are so much more memory hungry in my experiences. My current rom runs pretty fast with a 96mb swap. If I were to fun a Froyo rom, what can I do to be able to run the 3-5 apps and retain speed?

If you are using BOTH SWAP & have applications installed to the sdcard, then it will ****REALLY**** be slow.
With just applications on the sdcard, your speed should be fine.

This is a symptom of launcher being evicted from ram, try the stay in ram option in settings->adw launcher->system settings->system persistent in the more recent versions of adequate (I think included with rc2 if my memory serves me)
It may not be perfect as it will still get killed if a very large application is loaded.
Either you need a launcher that behaves as a good android application, and can quickly reload it's last state, even if it was not in ram when you requested it.. or launcher needs to be considered outside the usual android memory management and to be kept in ram.
These persistent processes are where you may depending on your usage of the phone find comp cache or swap in low amounts (32mb combined is probably the absolute max) may help as they will have allocated ram that is rarely used and not automatically freed as they are persistent..

Thanks for the detailed response! I just changed the adw launcher and deleted my swap partition... It seems to be much slower when pressing home (icons are taking a while to load) so I might just use 32 mb for swap.
EDIT: question, what exactly does ext4 do? I know swap is like external ram, but what does ext4/ext3/etc exactly do? and how much should I put in? I tried googling but could not find the answer. Thanks!

On CM6, nothing. On CM 4 & 5, it was used for Apps2Ext (formerly known as Apps2SD - before Google came out with their own flavor). However, CM6 does not have Apps2Ext. It has been indicated that it will be targeted for 6.1.
[Q] CM7.0.3 Stable, Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4 || Overclocking & Tablet Tweaks
What I have:
CM7.0.3 Stable, Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4
I need to:
- Be able to select 1100Mhz. I only see 1200Mhz and 1300Mhz, besides the other lower speeds. Am I using the right kernel for my CM built?
- I cannot use the performance options of Tablet Tweaks, as it says that my kernel is not supported. I cannot use the headphones fix or the 32bit to 16bit color depth either. Unsupported kernel. Why is that? Tried flashing the kernel twice with CWM 3.2.0.1 but still the same.
- Currently using SetCPU to min:300Mhz and max:1200Mhz, setting is "ondemand". The Nook gets warm on the back, so I am a little concerned. "ondemand" means that it will scale the CPU speed to different Mhz throughout the range? Why do I have a feeling that it pegs the CPU at the max setting?
- When the device goes to sleep with Wifi on, after I wake it up, let's say the next morning, the battery is down about 7%. Is the Wifi that kills the battery or the CPU? I need to try to turn Wifi off and see if it makes a difference.
Please don't suggest to change to nightlies or any other RC version. I prefer stable and I am almost sure that the older Dalingrin's kernel that I am using should work with what I have, along with Tablet Tweaks.
Thank you in advance for your time and effort. Love the forum. Cheers!
George
Sounds to me like you aren't trying to use "Tablet Tweaks" but "Nook Color Tweaks" and if that is the case then your build is too old and not supported.
From the Nook Color Tweaks thread:
* 2.6.29 releases are discontinued and no longer supported. They will remain hosted for those that might need them.
Click to collapse
* 2.6.32 CM7 builds currently do not work with the stable CM7 builds until CM7.1. You need to use CM nightlies until 7.1 is released.

Note: This app requires kernel support. For audio settings you will need a newer 2.6.32 kernel found in CM7 Nightly 88+ or my(Dalingrin) overclock kernel for B&N Froyo 1.2 and CM7.
For CPU settings you will need a 2.6.32 overclocked kernel from 06/09/11 or later.

You are correct! I mistyped the app name. I meant to write Nook Color Tweaks. I am aware of the Dalingrin's thread. But it does mention that although the stable releases are not supported, they are hosted. Is he referring to the older kernels?
In other words, I won't be able to use Nook Color Tweaks with my CM7.0.3 stable/Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4, even if it is not the latest one from June?
The 4/24/11 is a .29 kernel which is no longer supported, to utilize the Nook Color tweaks app you need a .32 kernel which only works with nightly 88+ and the CM7.1RCs.
Basically if you want to use Nook Color tweaks you'll need to update your build....
Ok, that makes sense. This is what I thought, I just wanted to verify it. Thanks for that. Any ideas on the battery draining issue when in standby? Do you think it might be the wifi?

.29 Kernels don't support deep sleep if I recall. You have to update to .32
I recommend running 7.1 RC. I've been running it for a while now. I was running 7.0.2 for a while, but finally upgraded and glad I did.

+1 to this. I know you said in advance not to recommend the nightlies, but I would really suggest giving the latest one a try, if not at least the RC. There have been numerous fixes and updates, and for me at least, it has been super smooth with no issues. Battery life among other things is much improved. With slight to moderate usage I now can get a week or so easily off of a single charge. You should always be able to revert back to the RC or the last stable version if you want to for some reason.
Everyone, thank you so much for your replies. I took your advise and updated to 7.1 RC (from 7.0.3 stable) and it is a much better experience now. The tablet seems to be a bit faster, CPU scaling works better and more effective and the battery also appears to last longer. I have also installed the laste 6/30 Dalingrin kernel and now I can modify the CPU/sounds settings from the Nook Color Tweaks app. The only thing I cannot change is the color from 32bit to 16bit to improve FPS. I guess I need a more recent nightly for this. Not critical, so I will wait.
BTW, is there an app out there that will change the depth color from 32bit to 16bit?
Thanks a lot again!

If I am not mistaken 7.1 RC already comes with a newer OC kernel than 6/30, with that kernel you should be able to change the bit depth.
^^^ Ooppss, did I mess it up since I have installed Dalingrin's 06/30 kernel? I can use all the features in Nook Color Tweaks except from the depth color. Should I install the 7.1RC kernel, and if yes, do we know which version? (...doing some research as well on this...)
If you just reflash 7.1 RC that should do the trick, at the minimum I know the OC kernel included in the RC is newer than 6/30.
So, I reinstalled 7.1RC and apparently the kernel that it comes with is older than Dalingrin's 06/30. The 7.1RC kernel will only get the CPU up to 925Mzh and its full version is 2.6.32.9 ([email protected] #87). Dalingrin's 06/30 kernel is 2.6.32.9 ([email protected] #103), and after I've reinstalled it, it enabled all the CPU OC capabilities up to 1300Mhz. So, I assume it is newer.
I wanted to start a thread but this one hits my issue. If I install any RC or nightly(tried many from 88 till 146) I g3t sod and wifi issues. But I can't get 7.0.3 encore to work with the kernel that allows nook color tweaks to work(I know its unsupported, and it bootloops)
So I have yet to find anything after encore that doesn't sod and have wifi issues.. what would the recommendation be?

^^ Not sure what to tell you... I was running 7.0.3 with the April Darlingin kernels (tried both 404 and 424) and the Nook Tweaks app didn't work with it. I then installed CM 7.1RC1 and it is a much better experience, from CPU throttling, interface, speed and stability. I have the latest 630 EXT4 kernel from Darlingrin and the Nook Tweaks app works great, except from the color depth control which it says it requires a newer version of CM7. The CPU OC works a LOT better in this 7.1RC1 release, I have no wifi issues, no battery draining since deep sleep is supported and I am happy overall. The only issue is with the new Android Market not showing all the apps, updates etc, but there is a workaround.

The funny thing is, I don't have that issue with not seeing the apps in market since I went back to encore. I'd rather have that issue and not the sod or wifi issues and have proper volume so I wouldn't need headphones though.

Yeah, I started to get the low space warning when hitting the ~ 500 MB line as well.
Here's what I've found, two types of AOSP/CyanogenMod based Roms for Cappy:
1) Gives low space warning (and as long as you don't cross that threshold) does not produce framework crashes.
2) Does not give low space warning, but produces massive framework crashes.
The problem (as I've learned from CyanogenMod forums) is the datadata partition. CM7.1 used the datadata partition for apps, and did not have the low space warning. This meant whenever you approached the 172 MB limit of datadata you ran into spectacular framework crashes.
However around nightly 11162011 they changed that, and introduced the "low space warning". This allowed about ~300 MB of apps to be installed, before datadata complained.
I bet if you look at your datadata* (I looked at mine just now) it's pretty close to full. Mine currently only has 17 MB free. I notice when I'm browsing the web with Maxthon with about 5 tabs open I get the low space warning.
I'm wondering now though if this is a relic of linking left in my system folder. Next flash I'm going to format my /system before flash and see if this behavior changes.
*To check your datadata size open a terminal (I like Android Terminal Emulator) and type "df".
You can remove the symlink betwen /datadata and /data (I think) but it will most likely make your phone anywhere from a tad slower to unusable slow. Like I said its just a limitation from our phones, at least for now.

I figured this was what is happening. Has someone tried this and confirmed the performance hit?
I did way back when on ICSSGS 2.x and 3.x Made my phone almost unable, which means my nand isn't in good shape. But the result varies a lot so no way on telling.
I know they had a zip but doubt it will work on any other rom.

So last night I was performing some benchmarks after formatting system. What I found was interesting to say the least. CNA was no longer laggy. Aokp isn't as fast as it felt.
Anyways, I stuck with dark knight and currently have 560 mb installed with no low space warnings and no framework crashes.
Update:
So after installing >500 mb of apps I'm still getting low space warnings with dark knight. I ran df in my terminal and have determined that it happened when the datadata partition is at oR below 15 megs free. Wierd thing though, I was at 28 mb free, reboot come back up with 6 mb free? Moved 70 mb of apps to USB storage, and it moved up to 26 mb free on datadata.

I think right now, moving apps to SD card is the only real solution. I think the limit is near ~375ish?
So far, I've only moved games and a video player. Hopefully, they'll still work fine.
I've had this for about 2 days now, and it seems to be working. I did start having framework crashes at the end of monday, but the phone surprisingly restarted. I'm not sure how that happened (maybe the AKOP rom is stronger than I thought). I did try and move some of the bigger app's to the SD card while the phone was crashing....I thought it didn't go through, but maybe it did.
So in summary, move apps to SD card when warning pops up. And if phone starts crashing, still try to move apps to SD card, restart and hope it works?
PS...Is anyone running the nostalgia ROM? I don't think that ROM has this problem. The developer said he had something like 250 apps installed. I'm not using it currently b/c I didn't like some of the theme-ing such as that in the people app. However, the developer recently told me that I could modify the zip package with an unskinned people app. If this AKOP rom fails me, I'll go to that and update results.

I've run Nostalgia as well, it's just more Samsung Bloat (From Doc's) on top of the AOKP core.
So it will give you the low space warning when datadata fills up, but largely like AOKP as long as you deal with it (Dark Knight as well) the system is rock solid.
HOWEVER there is good news for us:

The script above SHOULD help us use more of our app storage space, while still providing the awesome speed that custom roms are known for.

So after a month of running the "datadata" fix:
I have about 700 MB of apps installed with no framework crashes, no low space warnings (AOKP B32 / Glitch).
Datadata consistently has about 80 MB available. at it's current rate of increase when installing new apps, it's possible this configuration would allow the complete 2 GB usage of the data partition.
Hey guys, just wanted to post an issue I'm having with my Vivid. I'm not new to rooting and flashing ROM's but I am new to XDA, so I can't post in the dev forum yet, or else I would post this in there...
The issue I'm having with bilibox's PAC Rom is a pretty significant memory leak. On first boot, I have about 540mb used out of 794 (originally 820, but this rom uses up more RAM inherently), but as I progress though my day the free memory gets worse. With no apps open, as of now, I have 700mb used, out of 794 available. It does this throughout the day, and its eating my battery life along with slowing the phone down.
Also, for the best battery life, what performance settings should I be using?
Thanks, and sorry for the questions.

With no apps open, as of now, I have 700mb used, out of 794 available. It does this throughout the day, and its eating my battery life along with slowing the phone down.
Also, for the best battery life, what performance settings should I be using?
Thanks, and sorry for the questions.

Its not the rom. Its the kernel. We had to remap the memory in 4.2 and we lost some on the user space. If it is slowing down your phone download task manager . Or go into the performance section in settings and put "Free memory" to 100mb plus android always keeps 100~ mb ram free anyways.

Thanks for the quick reply man... I did all those things and it seems to be working much better now.
Changed my cpu settings as well, I was having trouble with them sticking before but I did a clean factory reset and it seems like everything is working good now.

Glad to hear that. Personally I set everything in the 99kernel file located in /system/etc/int.d/ make sure to use the es file explorer editor.. some editors dont keep permissions properly and it wont work
