Unable to install custom ROMs... Help please - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The same thing keeps happening when I attempt to flash a ROM to my Nexus. I've tried several ROMs from this forum. Here's what I'm seeing:
Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update-cm-5.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I've also attempted restoring to a nand backup and got a similar message about being unable to access the sd card.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks. Oh so helpful.
How about a link to the right place then?

Q&A.Mods please move to appropriate section. Make sure the zip file is in the root of sdcard.Unplug from computer if you are.Flash the zip file from Anon-Ra recovery. If still doesn't work, try downloading the Rom from another mirror.

Re-flash your recovery image and reformat your card

Moved as not Android Development.

Make sure your settings on your PC aren't such that you are inadvertently naming the files update.zip.zip. In some instances, Windows will append the file name automatically. To check if this is the case, go into My Computer>Tools>Folder Options and see if "hide extensions for known folders" is checked or unchecked. If its checked, then you need only to rename the file to update and windows will automatically put the zip on it. Have you installed Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image? This will allow you to not have to worry about this problem as it lets you flash any image with a .zip extension.
Wow That was It! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!1 My 8 hour headache is gone now!!!

Glad to help! I still stand by my original recommendation of installing Cyanogen's latest recovery image (1.4 currently) if you haven't done so already.
If you check back on this thread, can you please edit the title to say [SOLVED] so everyone knows that the problem has been handled?

RC29/unrooting help.

BTW I have searched for hours.
(my phone is rooted)
I am trying to go back to the RC29 build. I need to get replacement phone.
I dl dreaimg.nbh and put it on my freshly formatted fat32 sd card.
Everytime I hold camera and power on, it gives me a serial0 failure on a yellow line.
I am lost right now.
Ask in the Q&A section of the forum.
Have you read THIS???
Yes, I have.
I put the prginal SPL on the phone and renamed it to update.zip, I then put DREAIMG.nbh on the sd card as well, and then tried to install the update.
E:cant open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted
Press home and back to reboot

Are you on Windows machine? Make sure that it does not hide file extensions and you're not renaming your file to update.zip.zip
That's the only thing I can think about at this point but let's rule that out first
Let us know how it goes, we'll troubleshoot more if we need to
Good luck
lol you dont need to unroot to get a replacement phone. ive had four already every single one of them rooted just dont have a theme on it. and if your that serious about it just brick the phone. Not then say you was trying to update to the cupcake rom. Works Everytime

This is the Q&A section. You sir failed miserably.
Im not adding extra file extensions, I would just turn the phone in, but it does have a theme.
Ok, I figured it out on my own. Now running RC29.
So what's the trick?
Dl the updates from another source, freshly wiped the card for fat32.

[Q] rooting captivate cannot reinstall pkgs

I am trying to root my captivate, on rebooting ( reinstall pkgs.) I get an error "can't open / sd card/ update.zip.
SD card is out and unmounted. Tried factory reset to clear but still same error.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Make sure it's just named update not update.zip.
I'm having same problem and it's renamed "update".

The file must be copied as is. Don't rename it in windows and you can check your phone with my files after copied....name should be update.zip if not rename it on phone to that
And it needs to be on internal sdcard... /sdcard/update.zip
Swyped.....you may have to interpret

[Q] CWM dev basics: .zip always says "installation aborted"

I'm a developer, using a French Samsung galaxy Note with CWM.
Trying to construct my own update.zip to undo a boneheaded move.
I noticed while "adjusting" the OS that some things that worked for others did not work for me (Thunderbolt simply refused to install, with no real useful error status). CWM edify scripts look simple enough, but mine do this:
-- Installing: /sdcard/test3.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
I notice some of the update packages appear to be signed. Mine isn't, because that's just silly for this. But is some kind of "security" blocking my script? How can I disable?
As an aside, is it possible with CWM to do a manual file copy from sdcard into, say, /system ?
All .zip need to be signed, this may help tho

All credit goes to daneshm90 and don't forget to hit the thanks button if it helps
To copy or replace files to /system you can use es explorer or root explorer or ADB push but don't forget to assign proper permissions.

That fixed the problem. Thanks much.
This is definitely NOT obvious, and googling for 20 minutes didn't produce a result.
No problem
