Is there any point in an SSD right now? Seriously! - Off-topic

I don't see the point in a Solid State Disk.
They are over priced,
Too small,
And data tranfer rate are only about 233mb/s compared to 300mb/s spining hdd
So whats the big thing?
I dont get it!
flyboy

http://www.storagesearch.com/bitmicro-art3.html

I read a bit at the top of that site saying:
SLC SSD capacity- grew 71x
in the period 2001 to 2009.
3.5" SLC SSD capacity was 14GB in 2001. 2.5" SLC SSDs reached 1TB in 2009. MLC SSDs could pack 4TB into 3.5" today if there was a market. Price, and enterprise applications unsuitability presently preclude this.
So ok the technology is there for big ssd's but they are still over priced.
flyboy

Too expensive right now.

you are wrong. no spinning hdd can reach 300MB/s. i have a ssd in my laptop it was only about $75 when a hard drive is about the same; it is only 30GB though, but it does not matter because i dont store anything on my laptop.

Do they reach 300mb/s?
And what f you do store a lot of data?
flyboy

If you have a desktop then ssd for system and apps, main files.
standard HDD for storage, ie music, vids...
I really want one, only 2 issues for me, price and 2 sata header on my motherboard dam mini-itx. (cd and HD...)

yeah here is one that goes up to 355MB/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148348
also i was saying that i dont care that the one that i have is small because i store everything on my server or desktop.

So you have an SSD in your laptop?
Is there any noticeable speed differences?
flyboy

It's not really about speed when comes to solid states disks it's durability and size, no moving parts, which generally slows down the speed.
I found my Eeepc SSD to be far slower than say 5400 in a Gateway also found that if many processes stated @ once it's crawl like on bootup.

so ssd's are not as fast as spining drives?
flyboy

I've gotta say, in my case, when it comes to SSDs, it really *IS* all about speed
I purchased 4 32GB SSDs (SuperTalent ME/GX Drives - discontinued model, not the GX2, which is slower) - last year. I have them configured in a 128gb RAID0, speeds top out at roughly 650MB/s Read/Write, which is the rough practical limit of the Intel ICH9R SATA RAID chipset i'm using.
Even the single SSD outperformed any of the hard drives in my system (1-2 year old 7200RPM drives with 32mb cache)
SSDs have a hugely reduced latency time compared to a spinning disk, that's their major draw. Random access reads are hugely improved. For my usage pattern, nothing would suit it more other than a RAMDrive (which would cost much more and be volatile)
Here's an ATTO test on my RAID0, the write speeds are lower than usual (usually around 620MB/s) - I'm breaking in the new Intel RST driver. (Check out that read anomaly!) It would take you somewhere on the order of 6-8 Hard Drives in RAID to acheive a result like this with sustained transfers, and then you'd still be wayyy behind on random reads.

In comparison, here's 2 Raptors in RAID0 (Arguably as fast as you get with hard drives)
3 Raptors would almost equal the sustained speeds I get with 4 SSDs, be cheaper, and have more storage. But would never come close to the random access time using SSDs due to the nature of a hard drive (heads that need to seek)

Sorry to cut down post Da_G, must be cr*p drives in asus Eeepc range then as all models tried are slow but then they are budget side of laptops, always thought the problems would be simultaneous reads\writes..

Until they come down in price an increase in capacity, no point.

Low power, low heat generation, making a passively cooled totally silent machine possible?

I think its best waiting until the price comes down.
thanks
flyboy

"spinning" drivers are slow compared to ssd
people should not confuse the speed stated by the interface like SATAII 3Gbit/sec with how fast the physical media can transfer data
storagereview do benchmarks and keep a database for performance
http://www.storagereview.com/php/be...&numDrives=1&devID_0=360&devID_1=368&devCnt=2
these 2 are some of the fastest "spinning" drives max out at 119MB/sec
SSD also use a lot! less power and don't get hot
but imho they are still too small and expensive for desktop use

Da_G, I'm kind of curious as to what kind of tasks are you doing that require you to have the need for maximum random access read speed? Are you running a large database that doesn't fit into memory or the OS page cache? Besides that I couldn't see you doing constant random reads over a large set of data.

Do you think ssd's would be good in servers?

Need some 3rd party-no interest-help

Good day gentlemen (and lady nerds),
Though I consider myself knowledgeable in desktops, I find it better to include a third party to aid me in making a decision in purchasing a desktop. To make it easy...these are the things I'm looking for (to narrow the possibilities)
Will be going to Best Buy---I know...but I really have never had any issues with them...besides, the person helping can look at their website for specs.
Desktop options:
Pretty much open to anything (see??? It wasn't hard!!) Looking for:
dual layered dvd/rw lightscribe drive
at least 500gb
4gb ddr2 sdram mem
Price range --- up to $500 US (or 6 million pesos +QuePPC)
capable of handling photo and video editing without me having to wait 10 minutes to apply changes...
I just need to replace my current desktop, as it feels like its beginning to run on fumes (already 5 1/2 years old)---poor fella...
**off topic--went to Mexico as a child and found a coin...person told me that it was like 5,000 pesos and I was like, "Man!!! I'm rich!!!!" Went to a store...and came out with a stale, spicy piece of candy...rip off!!!
I dont know if its will be in your price range but!!!
Intel core i7 920 (the cheapestof i7 but can be OCd to 4ghz)
Nvidia Geforce 9600 and up (like 9800 or gts250) or a good ati card like 4870 (about the same power a Nvidia geforce 260 - but much cheaper)
about the other stuff -well if this all will be in you price range - then find something that is compatible with this!!
Good Luck!

500US is not 6 million pesos
500US = 6,651MX

You're wasting your time going to bestbuy.
I build systems regularly and you can get a brand new i5 system with a dedicated video card for about 600. It's more than you were looking to spend, but FAR superior to what you'd get at bestbuy for the money. If you're interested, I can piece something together at an online retailer and email it to you. I just hate seeing people pay more for less in a store.
Okay...how about this then?
Looked up a site...and just plugged in some specs...
can I do better than this at a 585 price????
Take something like Pentium DualCore E5200, cheapest 4GB RAMs 800/1066MHz (they actually might be cheaper lol), WD6400AAKS harddrive (640GB, fast, awesome), 400W Seasonic PSU, GTS250 GPU, Gigabyte G31 motherboard (or P35 ASUS or anything like that) plus other things you need (dvdrw, casing). I hope it can fit in 500$ (it's not that much tbh).
PS: You can easy overclock the E5200, all of them goes at least to 3.3GHz
This setup runs at $513 US...is this decent?
That's better, but the GPU I don't like (crappy drivers), plus harddrive would be better WD6400AAKS since it is faster. Why the hell did you choose crappy nvidia 7100 motherboard? Take cheapest G31 or P35 MoBo.
If this is maximum you can pay, take it. Still, the price seems pretty high for me.

More than an iPad alternative; TEGA Touch!

Hi guys
If you are looking for a Tablet Touch Screen,
If you are fine with Windows,
If you don’t want a bigger phone than the smart phone you already have, but something having more power and functionality
If you want to keep using your USB memory stick to transfer you last holidays photos because 4Go in Bluetooth takes time…
If you want to arrive at your mate house, a join the network without having to enter credential, and just by plugging an Ethernet cable to the router.
If you want to chat with a webcam
If you want 3G
If you want to be able to display on an external screen (working with Excel on 10” ??, no thanks)
If you are clever enough for multitasking
If you want to be able to get 1 or 2 Gb of Ram
If you want to be sure that your not buying an under configured device, just because some marketing guy want you to buy a “v2.0” in a year.
And if you don’t want to break the piggy bank for all that
Well don’t get an iPad, get something else, something like a TEGA Touch.

I just find that Tablet looking for iPad alternative.
Weighting just 1 kilo, and for price starting at AU$1,086.8, I was pleased to see that for such price, there is an iPad alternative containing
With these specs in the box, you can expect to do what you are normally doing with a computer, not only surfing on the web and read e-book.
I can see easily how the specifications of the TEGA Touch will suit me.
- Sick, working from home? Fed up about being seated in the living room doing a power point for your boss. Transfer all the files on your slate (thanks USB port), grab your slate, go on the couch and keep working with just a stylus. Using PDF, Excel, Internet, eMail at the same time to make your presentation. No worries, you can multitask… The presentation is getting huge (100Mo), no worries, you have 2Gb of Ram.
- Back from holidays? 30Gb of photos to transfer (thanks again USB) and classify… And doing that, you like to get multiple photos open at the same time, so after applying gamma and contrast corrections you can pick the best ones. Well 2Gb of Ram and Multitasking is for you.
- Cooking dinner at home? You just want to listen to internet radio while checking recipes on the net, well, multitasking is for you again.
Does that look far from what you’re doing all the time with your computer? No too far really, this is why I’ll prefer to get a Tega than a iPad.

*Not Phone Related* - NES Gaming PC - Celebrating 25 Years

So...for those who want to take a break from all the phone stuff, I thought I'd share a small project of mine.
I recently completed a PC build I did back in October and decided to document the progress of the build with three videos (last one, part 3, linked above). I took an old, non-working NES and used it as a case to make a NES PC gaming rig that does one thing - play NES games with the original, unaltered NES controllers. I know that NES PC mods are nothing new and that many have been done before, but it was a fun hobby project. Anyway, let me know what you think!
Here's a few pics of it:

This marvelous idea has inspired me! i am currently making a gamecube controller external hardrive/bluetooth unit...
i just need a bit of help, do any of you guys know where i can get a 2 way usb splitter?
something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-Port-Way-U...&otn=3&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=6892448881617951994
but only 2 way???
if all goes well, ill post a guide on how to make one
(oh, if you know of a three way splitter that could be useful as well, as i am thinking of adding a usb LED)
(oh again, if you know of a four way splitter like the one linked, but with a smaller "convertor box (for lack of a better word)" please link that also, as i can just cut one or two of the usb's off)
hope that made sense.
Nice! I haven't had time to watch the video so pardon if I'm asking a dumb question, but what are the specs of the machine?

yeah, i was thinking about that...
but the coverter box thingy is a bit big to fit inside the gamecbe controller, and if its outside, it looks a bit tacky

i will post a pic in a couple of weeks after the items arrive

The specs are:
Intel E5300 @ 2.8GHz
Geforce 9300 onboard chip
40GB Intel SSD
150W Pico PSU
It's waaaaay overpowered for just playing NES games, but it barely manages to run Hyperspin (the front-end, aka the menu) with all the bells and whistles (it's very CPU intensive as the entire menu is based around flash). So that's the reason for having such a strong GPU/CPU. I could have possibly gone with another front-end that isn't so intensive, but I really like Hyperspin and the options it gives you for building out a menu.
For the SNES build, I'm going with a sleeper look, which means I can't cut holes in any of the case - and that means I need to have a passively cooled motherboard and proc that won't overheat. So I'll need to find a way to lower the specs while still managing to run Hyperspin at a decent framerate. It'll be interesting when I start it - I love these kinds of projects.
Flash should be hardware accelerated, so it should be mainly dependent on your gpu. It is overkill for NES, but it is pretty sweet still.
anyone know where i can buy a cheap (broken preferably) xbox original online?
ebay doesnt give any results (only broken xbox 360's)
any ideas?

Really? Thought flash was CPU. Is flash run via DXVA now? Didn't seem like it on the box. Oh well, regardless, Hyperspin takes up a lot of CPU if you turn all its features on. But it's a great front-end.

hmm... you could always try a via nano-itx motherboard (120mm by 120mm) for your sleeper build, the one with the 1.5ghz processor might work well as it's graphics chip supports hdmi output...
i just think it may be hard to fit a mini-itx board in the case without cutting some holes at the back.
EDIT: oh, what mobo did you use in your nes?
I used a ZOTAC GF9300-I-E. Yeah, for the SNES build I'll need to go smaller perhaps. I won't be able to start on it for a few months though. But I already have a pretty good idea for what the video will be like. Should be fun!

Are Alienware laptops worth the money?

Ive been considering getting one. I think they look really cool. Anybody have any experience with them? Or does anyone suggest something comparable?
Alienware is good.. but overpriced. IMO I wanted a nice mobo gaming device and i settled with the Lenovo Y550 ($600) about 2 years ago and it has held up fine it still able to play some of the newer games but not on high though. Gets the job done.
Same goes for all technology once you purchase something there is already something better out there for the $.
Or you can wait till thanksgiving area. Thats when they really start rolling out the good deals ( not only because of BF) Check slickdeals often they have some nicely priced gaming laptops.
Alienware laptops are overpriced and a battery drainer (the dual graphics one), but on some models you can get a high quality gaming with excellent battery power.
And they're not really overpriced, considering the hardware and production costs needed to build a SINGLE machine. I choose the upcoming MSI laptop. it's cheap
choose wisely
and thank me. be grateful.

If you're on a budget, don't bother. Gaming notebooks are never worth the money coz you can pour so much more into a PC and get much better specs.
Also, here's my favourite laptop site comparing graphics cards. Just click into the card name and then you scroll to the bottom to see what laptop has that GPU. Their review are VERY thorough.

I was more talking about cost/benefit ratios than customizability. Simple example is that my single GPU usually beats an SLI/xfire setup on a notebook, using lower costs.

Agreed. Say if you buy a 1,000 dollar gaming laptop you can probably get the same/better specs for probably half the price. Plus if you have a desktop you can always upgrade while laptops its pretty pricey.
Whatever you end up getting, I strongly suggest actually trying one out in person.
Get a feel for the keyboard, and don't judge screen resolutions/picture quality by reviews or opinions from other forum members (not that they don't provide useful information). Audition the laptop you intend on purchasing. That's the only way you'll see which screen is easiest on your eye's. I made the mistake of not doing this. Never again.

good laptop, with it's weight and thickness makes it a recommended one. but those price, and no DVD-RW player, touchpad not for left-handed, makes it not comparable to the Alienware...

$2800, so sell your car, sell your wife, cuz they're stealin' everythang out here.
No. Please do some minimal learning in order to build your own and get better performance at 1/3 the cost.
Sager NP5165 is what I would reccomend. Similar specs to the MX14 at only near 1000 dollars. Google it and buy from xoticpc. they seem to have good prices and support.
I like my Asus G73jh I play wow every day on it and all my surfing.1283.00 @ bestbuy out the door

cant decide which win7 tab to get...

before you say it, yes i know win7 isnt a good tablet os. i know. i dont care i still want one. lol.

my arguments for gigabyte:
much faster cpu (atom equivalent of an i3)
standard 2.5" hdd allows more and cheaper upgrade options (hybrid hdd anyone?)
dual usb with one superspeed
mouse pad, mouse buttons and scroll buttons make it much easier to navagate freely, also certain combos will send certain commands like C+A+D
looks really sexy, pretty much like the hp slate
thoughts: if it had atleast 720p resolution and atleast dx10 supported gpu id be all over this thing
summary: has ehh hardware compared to msi but ease of use seems exponentially bettermy arguments for msi:
slightly cheaper
ips display at 720p+ (you sexy beast)
lower tdp cpu
radeon 6 series gpu with dx11 absolutely OBLITERATES any atom gma (the ability to do some light gaming like bejeweled and heavy weapon would be nice, at more than 15 fps would be even better)
double the ram at a higher data rate
msata insures low power consumption
dual cameras
gps (cuz why not)
slightly bigger battery
dedicated C+A+D button can be pretty useful
tpm security module
thoughts: if i could find a better cpu to upgrade to i could live with everything else and would buy this thing in a heartbeat but lack of mouse controls, super slow cpu and lack of i/o ports are a real turn off
summary: has some fairly impressive hardware for a tablet, but the ease of use seems lacking compared to the gigabyte
I can see where this will end up, so ib4l
ha ha ha! way to be productive bro.
Some people here judge everyone by their own standards
yeah... just go ahead and delete the thread im sure everyone is gonna bypass it anyway

I'd say wait for surface. It's worth the wait. Even I'm ditching Android as a tablet OS for that device.

^^^ that.
Unless there's a specific reason for wanting W7 on it (maybe you just want it now, rather than waiting), go for W8 - looks much better.

I'll close it if you really want me to, but not everyone in here's a troll. Some will actually read your post and answer constructively.

i know i probably should but im not looking to spend a ton of money on this thing as i already have a $2300-something sager gaming rig (the one good thing about deploying: the redonk amount of cash you make). i just wanted this as a small cheap portable solution.and plus i can jusp upgrade when w8 is released if i wanted.

oh yes i know ive been here since i found the place back when the og evo came out so i know that people can be really helpful... when it comes to phones. other things tend to be not so much. atleast in my experience.
I had no intention of being a troll - it was early in the morning here, I briefly skimmed the OP and had visions of it going exactly the same way the recent Mac thread has gone, turning into a haters vs fanboys outing.
To be honest, I would also recommend waiting for one of the 'Surface' tablets running Windows 8. 7 just isn't designed for tablets and is still really difficult to utilise without a keyboard - I speak from experience as I am an EPoS engineer by trade and spend half my life using both XP & Win 7 based touch-screen PC systems in my job.
I have played with 8 and it just looks much better designed and far more ideal for the Tablet market.
The arm version of the surface would have a processor that is similar to those of android tablets and the ipad right now. You wont be able to run any current windows programs on it. However the pro version of the surface should run older windows programs, in addition to the metro apps. The pro version will most likely be a bit pricey though.

Yes I just looked it up and saw that and that is my problem with new Surface machines. RT is supposed to start out at $600 but basically is a glorified WinMob/WinPhone, and since its ARM it will most likely use SOCs which means no CPU or RAM expansion options. On the other hand 8/Pro will be fully compatible with everything and use standard mobile components, but starting at $1000+ is way out of my price range. Again, I have an expensive ass laptop for the power computing area of my life, I just wanted this as a thing that is more mobile and just to mess around with it. And as far as the keyboard thing, SimonTS, a $15 generic mini USB keyboard case from Amazon can easily solve that problem.
I guess when I end up being able to buy something Ill go for the Gigabyte because of the body, ports, and the couple of accessories offered by Gigabyte compared to the... nothing that MSI offers (that Im aware of at least). I bet I can replace the screen on it too hopefully.
