To Clarify . . . - Shift Development

I have some questions regarding hacking the Shift. And before anyone starts berating me for not searching for these topics first . . . I did. I've been trying to figure this stuff out for weeks, but with all of the broken English (I mean no offense there) and the expert speak, I've become lost. I appreciate any answers at all.
1) Where are the factory settings for the Snapvue side stored? Are they hidden in the original ROM itself? I would assume so, but need to clarify.
2) If the above is correct, I would then have to assume that flashing a ROM would delete those settings. So if someone was to use ecshift.exe to try restoring the Snapvue side to factory default, after having flashed a different ROM, it probably wouldn't work right?
3) Does the community already have the original X9501 ROM? 'Cause I want to make a backup for my own uses, but will share it if the community doesn't have it yet.
4) How do you go about dumping the ROM? Pof's guide really doesn't explain much. I need a bit more to go on.
5) Does the dumped ROM include any personal information? Say, if someone was to set up an email account, does that get included in the ROM dump?
6) Can I flash just a radio? Or do I have to dump the ROM, build the new NBH, or RUU, or ROM, or whatever it's called, inserting the radio, and then compile and flash it?
7) I'm really curious about how the Vista side is able to interact with the Snapvue side (share the WWAN connection for instance), without the user doing anything. This probably is a bit broad of a question, but how does all that work? I mean, why does that work, but we need the USB Tool to get it to connect in other ways? Another question is way does ActiveSync only work when the WWAN is off? And do our carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) realize we're getting the laptop connect service for free?
8) Anybody tried getting a digitizer to work on the screen? Or, has anybody tried changing out the screen with a digitizer screen? I see a 7" digitizer LCD being sold on eBay and wonder if I shouldn't give it a shot. The problem of vectoring might still be there, because the Stealey processor and Photoshop just don't get along, but at least I'll have pressure sensitivity.
9) Lastly, how do I get a petition of sorts started? I see the option to "post a poll" at the bottom, but have no idea what this does. I want to get a running tally of everyone who would be willing to buy a 2GB module for the Shift. I would like to approach the major RAM manufacturers with some hard numbers, showing them exactly how they could possibly benefit, depending on manufacturing expenses. But if we get enough people involved, it may well be worth their while.
Thanks!

Nothing?
Wow. Is there really no one who can respond? Is the community/project dying for real this time?
It would be a sad day indeed. Especially considering the wonderful potential of the Shift. Why, just the other day I discovered that I can turn my Shift into a Mifi device and have every computer in my house connected for only $30 a month. Come on! That's awesome!
Bluetooth and SD card aside, it is a great device! Let's keep the project going!!

i try to answer a bit.
[1] there is no factory setting. just the default stock rom (if no custom rom has been flashed before) or the custom rom image.
[2] again, there is no settings at all. just the rom original state. if custom rom has been flashed, to restore factory setting means reflash stock rom (very hard to get). u only can use hard-reset term.
[3] pls check shift library thread. original stock rom is very hard to get. (i assume only service center have it & no updates available thru htc site )
[4] read it carefully. it is always hard to learn.
[5] no. just the original ROM image.
[6] yes, but what for. some custom rom need specific radio version to get it fully working.
[7] it has special modem interaction. usb tools is to connect the device to connect it with async/wmdc for different purpose. not for internet sharing.
[8] no idea. maybe will hv driver issue
[9] dunno what to answer.
thanks.

Thanks!
monx, you answered a good many of my question to satisfaction, I appreciate it! Anyone else care to shed some light on 4, 8, and 9? These are still lingering questions.
Another lingering question is:
Regarding 6, if I were to flash just a radio would all I have is a radio and no real OS?

Still Need Clarification
So, I finally figured out how to dump the Shift's ROM. I figured out how to turn the .raw files into a .nb and then use the .nb to create a .nbh. I have a backup of the original x9501 ROM.
Now I want to get the phone to work. I don't want to use someone elses custom ROM because I'd like to keep this somewhat legit. I'd like to make my own custom ROM, but want to simple get the phone working first. So . . . how do I go about doing that? Obviously, liberate, hardspl, but then what? Flashing just a radio won't do it right? Because there would still need to be some sort of registry editing to the OS? Anyone have a link to a guide or some info? Appreciate it.

a very NOOB alpine owner

hi hello to everybody. i need to know many things. maybe an expert will help me/guide me to the links i needed or maybe reply to me. my gf bought me an o2 xda lli last june. it works fine for me all this time and i have no prob about it. i somehow fried the cradle by inserting a bad adaptor to it and it wont work. so i don't do any backups yet or whatsoever from the pc. all i had was the 1 GB sdcard. i bought an infra red adapter recently and was wondering on trying updated roms with all the hype regarding on better performances as you guys have confessed. now unto my question:
1.do i need to upgrade my rom
XDA IIi
Rom Version: 1.11.00 WWE
Rom Date: 01/27/05
Radio Version: 1.00.00
Protocol Version: 1337.39
ExtROM Version: 1.11.923 WWE
since it never gave me a headache as of yet? honest opinion only please
2.how will i do it? any step by step instruction perhaps since i am very new to this.
3.will i be able to return back to my original rom if i happened not to like the upgrades?
4.again is it safe or worth risking it?any step by step procedure to go back to my old rom would be a big help
what do you think guys?
In my opinion you don't need to update your device! And if I know it right there isn't an update over 1.11.00!
Hi MacGuyver first-of-all Welcome to the XDA community. You have mentioned that you have already burnt-up your cradle, and then have you arranged another yet? Because once you will run-out of the battery completely then you will loose all the information as your XDA will reset to its default position.
As far as the concern about the ROM you have got the latest ROM but I think this Rom is the default rom from the manufacturer, I am using the same rom as well but the edited version (you can see in picture), edited means few features have been altered from the original rom e.g. All the O2’s crap has been deleted and by that the system is using less CPU power. I can help you out if you want that Rom. I am a big admirer of the SPB softwares as they are light and accurate (try the link below) and I am using nearly all of their softwares (pictures attached).

One suggestion would be to check out ebay and some of the other online sites for a replacement cradle and power supply, then you will at least have full connectivity to the computer.
thanks for the warm welcome guys. as you can see i live in the philippines and i am away from the metropolis for the moment till the end of the year. there are no cradles for sale right now at this town. so i might end up buying it by january when i return to work. anyways i have seek help from a local cell shop and the dude there gave me this charger which cost me about 10dollars just to have the unit charged. it was a modified nokia charger, but it gets the job done, so i'm guessing that the infra red device i bought will be of no help for connectivity for my Alpine? actually i never tried it yet with the alpine, because i treasure this baby so much don't want to mess or destriy it and all.
i do consider upgrading the camera though since it looks so dusty. and yes i want to rid it of the O2 stuff as well. so far i am happy with it's performance. got few more questions to ask.
1. by fixing the camera, do i really need to have an entirely new rom on the unit?
2.judging by what you guys said, updating the rom using with the infra red device is not adviseable, or it can be done?
3.do people on ebay really can be trusted sending stuff to remote places like the philippines if i go shopping from there?
thank you and i am very much enjoying my stay here guys
Hey a fellow countryman!
There is a shop that sells XDA series Phones and accessories. It's not a specialty shop but it is the only one in the country. If I remember correctly it is called Brightpoint, located in Araneta Mall.
Been there once, I kinda broke the phone and had to have it reflashedd with the original ROM.
First of regarding "upgrading" the ROM, only the Extended Rom can be manipulated.
The radio version has a newer version, v1.04. Don't know the exact difference and the O2 website doesn't give it to Asian XDA owners (been checking and no upgrades for us in this part of the world).
The WWE ROM is still the same thing as far as I have learned. Although you can change it for another language (Don't know how but a lot of people have been requesting the localized version of the ROMs for their country).
One method of taking out the O2 stuff (without having to reflash) to relieve more memory would be to cancel the installation after a hard reset. It is a bit tedious since the installs are somewhat fast and at times you might cancel the installation of an important program!
Plus, our ExtROM also has the keys and screen locked during installation.
On the other hand you can modify your ExtROM to not install the O2 stuff. That would need a cradle (as far as I have experienced).
Keep reading the forums out there to check if you really want to change your ROM or not.
And if you do want to change your ROM, I also learned from these forums how to do it. Also, one poster gave a website that has it as a step by step. It's not anymore updated (the thread) but is still very useful.
On my next post I'll answer your next questions as long as I am sure of the answers...

Answers to questions:
1. As far as I have learned, the camera fix is a CAB installer inside the ExtROM. More like a patch installer. A new ROM isn't needed unless you want the patch to automatically install after a hard reset.
A copy of the CAB file is just what you need.
If you're thinking of grabbing the camera patch posted here, you'll need to open up the ExtROM file (uploaded here) to get it.
2. I haven't used IR yet but I have had a VERY SLOW experience with it. It took me 20+minutes to receive a 1MB file. (haven't checked my settings, it might have caused the slow transfer)
The ROM upgrades are approx. 50MB total.
From my point of view it's better to go for the cradle.
3. There is the ebay philippines website. Although the cradle doesn't get sold separately there.
As for international ebay, you do shoulder the cost of shipping and would also pay additional if customs over here categorized it as taxable goods.
Try checking out Brightpoint at Araneta Mall sometime, they might have the cradle there as a separate item.
Goodluck and don't forget to backup your old ROM before upgrading!
wow thanks a lot JP2005. that was very informative. yep i heard about brightpoint too. actually i have been there i think last year. my phone came from japan but it is in english. after reading your post i have changed my mind regarding upgrading the rom for the moment, maybe in the future but not now.
i am also interested at this cab file installer for the camera to somehow make it look a bit presentable, if you can fill me in the details or anybody around here to show me some links to it that would be much appreciated. anyways i have printed out the instructions i thought might came handy to me regarding guides. thanks you again good day
can any good soul upload an asian rom [factory default] .nbf file to the server? you know the file being used to backed up in the memory card. thanks
also if i just run the cab files inside the zips of the rom upgrade, will it work or crash? for example the camera fix?

I've managed to backup the original ROM sold for the Philippines via the SD card backup.
Unfortunately, it takes the same space as the capacity of the SD card used.
I used the 128MB SD card and have backed up 128MB of ROM data (not the actual size but it uses the whole card).
I'll try to upload it via the download service websites when I have the time. Will PM you or post in this thread the link.
Also, as far as I know you can only flash this file via SD card and bootloader mode.
The necessary programs and instructions I'll try to pack in within an archive file so you don't have to look around for it.
thank you so very much. you just made a pinoy happy
Sorry for late reply...
Here's the link:
Code:

The file is in .rar format and is 83MB...
Good luck with your upgrades!
does running the camera patch.cab file alone damages the OS of a pocket PC?

I don't think the camera patch will affect the OS...
The deepest it can tamper is the registry (as far as I know). It creates the required parameters for the camera to operate.
So I think the camera patch will probably do some fixes to the camera (prog) registry...
thanks for the reply. but you are still not very sure about this yet? i am planning on extracting the camera fix from Pugs rom and running it as a cab file fom the ppc. i am still trying to know if my proceedure will work or fail

This probably won't hurt the system...
I've tried PUG's ROM (the whole package) and my Alpine didn't go haywire.
Everything was fine but I kinda missed the rotatescreen icon and didn't know how to let it show via registry edit...
So I went and restored the original ROM and just upgraded the Radio from PUG's ROM and cooked my own Ext_ROM.
you just run the .cab file of the radio? if so that answers question of running these fixes while everything is installed

nope, the radio is flashed...
I just renamed the ms_.nbf and nk.nbf files so they won't flash together with the radio...
thanks a bunch. it clears up everything.
i guess after i do the radio then i have to get sun/globe/smart configs too since they have UK once and that doesn't include our telcos.

t-mobile wing fresh installing

I have been reading countless threads and want to know if I am understanding the concepts.
This is what I want to do. I have been tweaking my wing since I bought it and I want to be able to start fresh. I installed some progs to the device itself and other things that I would like to fix. So....
1. I want to backup my Wing as it sits now *it does work and dont want to accidently lose anything. I have a 1 gb storage card with it, and I have an 1 gb storage card for the new Fresh setup.
2. I have been reading on a few things, and I believe I have to start with the original .RUU for my unit. I am understanding the concept of bricking, but from reading it seems its fixable by myself with the right understanding. is this true?
3. I really like these .ROMs I been seeing in the forums, stuff with gps, plugins, apps., touchflo and others all on one file. II believe i want to have the pagepool changed but it seems I have to do this seperately. I believe this is what I want to accomplish, so do I need to do something from the original .RUU to be able to put "cooked (*think that means custom package of files?" roms on my wing??? The threads are so scatterbrained that I couldnt make sense of it. I thought it was stated that I do need to mod the original .RUU with something before putting .roms on.
4. I know this is easy for some of you guys, as well as you might be on your pc often, so if anyone has the t-mobile wing and understands everything this entails, maybe a private conversation (messengers of even thru forum)? I am willing to help repost a New Thread to clarify this *beginners concept.
5. Anyone out there doing what I am looking to do, please post your specs of what .roms u used, or whatever.
Thanks in Advance for any help here guys!

Wich ANTI THEFT program is better?

hi guys, I have my precious HTC touch diamond for a week now, and because of its beautifull shine, everyone wants to have one.
That's why i did some searching on the web about anti theft programs, and I found these 3
Ultimate Theft Alert v3
W.I.M.P.
Sprite Terminator
They all look pretty good, but before buying anything (or downloading ) I want to know wich one is best to pick, could you guys help me with that? also keep on mind that the program has to work on a VGA screen
Thanks, Markos Wahid
Tried three of them also and decided to (actually buy) sprite terminator with a coupon disc 50% (forgot where i got it thou), reason to buy:
- support
- price (very cheap!!!)
- easy to use
a program called mobile justice thats free and does the job, if you burn it in to a ROM before you flash the ROM to your device it will resist hardresets as well unlike most programs out there.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mjustice/
not to mention a steel chain with a steel lock, one end at yr diamond, second one around yr neck
jokes aside, ultimate theft alert is the most popular.
i am sorry to see that the diamond in his actual configuration doesn't support the very slim chance that somebody will find it and be willing to return it, i am talking about OWNER INFORMATION!! gone in the invisible "today" screen
I need some advice to burn Ultimate theft alert to a ROM on diamond.
Is this possible?
^probably... check the developer forum..theyd be better at answering that...
i think the guy who makes ultimate theft also posts here...It seems the nicest.. the other alternative is sprite...the middle one doesnt look nice. i dont really know since i never had a wm device. im just saying from what ive read...
I tried to install Theft Alert but the instalation crashes...
Has anyone the same issue?

Settings --> Owner information --> Options --> "When the device is turned on, display: Identification Information"
Sprite terminator requires some additional editing. It says my GPS location is in China somewhere.
Ultimate Theft seems to work alright, but I havent tested it yet with the sims, which I'll do in a few minutes.
I like the ULT 3.5 better.
what i'll like to know is how to burn. the developer section have no guide on actual burning and takes for granted that we're rom cookers so i for one, understand nothing T.T

I agree. All these softwares are useless as most people would hard reset the device.... As far as cooking goes, I really want to get into doing this - I just need the 'beginner' tutorial, before the 'hardcore' tutorial..
Even the SPL must be protected against reflashing of the phone then. Is that possible?
So locking the SPL so no new SPL can be flashed either, and new ROM flashing is impossible then.
There are too many smart people who just fix that 'hot' phone with UTA or any program to original. And the thing you want is you phone back.

Well I do know that HardSPL has overwrite protection and you cannot flash a new SPL after you've installed it. Although there will be a 'downgrade' package soon so you can get back to stock SPL.
I don't understand why there isn't such a flash and/or hard reset protection...it's just very frustrating when you lose the device(like I did once) knowing the next 'owner' could simply hard reset (or flash a new ROM) to use it as his own device. I know, cooking some settings into a ROM solves a little piece, but more and more people are aware of XDA-dev and know about flashing. So you could cook your anti-theft into your ROM, but agianst flashing there is nothing u can do
Well, I thought, it should be possible to lock SPL flashing, by encrypting the bootloader by (my own) password?
On the moment one makes flashing without my password impossible, a antitheft program can be installed in the ROM and running always, even with hard-reset.
One should vind an easy way of providing MY sim card data into that rom prior to flashing.
Hi Folks,
But back to the topic, is there any anti-theft programs that really works in the first place for Diamond? I had tried Star Enforcer (it can't get the current IMSI number), Mobile Justice (it can't send out SMS) and RemoteTracker (can't run... I need to research more on this..).
Cheers.
mobile justice, did you install the certificate? most problems are as a result of that not being done, give me a PM if you want a hand and ill talk you through it, it does work well, but as already been mentioned all it takes for any software is a full flash, if you install many of the apps to the ROM before flashing it you can at least survive a hard reset.
Thanks Dazza,
I had missed installing the certificate.
But now, after some testing, I found out that it was only able to send out SMS unless I select "Disp.MsgBox".
Is this something expected? May be MJ needs to be re-rewritten or recompiled for WM6.1?
I'm aware of the hard reset issue. Am planning for myself to learn how to cook up a ROM, with my details in, to prevent this.
Cheers.
Tried UTA 3.5. and WIMP
Both can send out Text messages to designated telephone no.
But i thought UTA 3.5 could monitor the sms and phone calls going in or out of the phone. but it didnt seem to work. it crashed. and when you inserted a new sim it kept on asking whether i wanted to run the .exe file not very good.
Am testing out WIMP at the moment and seems to be ok.
but not alot of functionality if compared with UTA that is if UTA worked.
That would be a very good idea if you can input it into the ROM. but will you not have to mess with the registry to 'register' the product and keep your data.?
Well,
When I did a hard-reset last week, I observed that the device begins installing some software onto itself, just like it did when I first powered it up. May be we can cook up something into a cook ROM to do something identical? E.g. the settings required for MJ?
But then, I'm a noob at this stage (with a full time job and family). So, I'll have a very long way to go.
Cheers.

Noob with ???

First, this is a great site and I have looked at many threads. But I still need some help.
I got a sd card (4G) and started moving some file to the card like the owners manual said. But I guess I moved something I shouldn't as my phone went crazy. It wouldn't get a service signal and among other things.
So I preformed a HardReset and reset the phone. But that seemed to cause the same problem. So I researched the web awhile and read of an update for moble 6, so i downloaded and flashed my phone. Now the problem is that I can't perform a HardReset.
My ??? are:
What can I do to fix this?
And without getting a cooked ROM, are there any good "cab's" that would improve my phone?
ummmm i dunno of any actual cabs.... But why not a "lite" custom rom? since it sounds like your looking for memory.
I wasn't planning on a Rom, because I read that it voids the warrenty. But after finding out that my warrenty has expired and t-mobile won't do anything. Are there any current Roms that are good. Must have internet sharing.
I currently use OpenTouch Project 7.7 Lite, Its been smooth running with lots of free memory... But it doesnt have Internet sharing...I do believe that a CAB can be downloaded to get that option though.... itll just take me a bit to find a good one... If you want I can look. However...... I KNOW that ITsPapaBlack 6.1v2 has it as I have used it.... But I believe there are some windows vista isues
I think I know where to look to get the cab for internet sharing, but would I have to input the information that t-mobile put on the phone. Or would it be already on it with the cab? As for OpenTouch Project 7.7, where could I find info about it?
Her ya go man.... All OTP 7.7 Roms thats a link to the downloads... as for info TTrans OTP 7.7 Thread. And btw ANY info you need on the mo network is available via their website. you can get step by step walkthroughs on how to setup the network. but the OTP 7.7 has a network setup wizards so it should do it all for ya!
I believe most ROMs have the network wizard built in, so you should be fine. As far as light ROMs go, there's a few (most of my ROMs are lite, too.) If you want ultimate in space and RAM, JustME or Just2Clean might be a good choice. (70MB FREE of storage.) But really your best bet is to try different ones and see which ones you like best. Try a little opentouch, a little itspapa's, a little just's, etc and see what you like best.
Not to hijack a thread but I have tried the OpenTouch ROMs and I notice that the MS Direct Push is no longer available. Is that due to Office 6.1 not being loaded in that ROM?
Lance
Thanx for your input. I think I'll try a few to see how they work and which one fits my needs. Right now I am trying out some .cab's and picking the ones that helps.
Oh, and do any of those ROM's ha Internet Sharing? If not, I take it that I'll have to install a .cab. But if I do that, do I have to input the information so I can use it. This is important as IS is my only internet access. Thanx.
Not sure as I only use my own ROM. I know that my most of my newer ROMs have it and as long as you run the network wizard (which runs automatically on my ROMs) then it will work without any settings having to be inputed. Just read up on the ROM's thread and you'll find out if a particular ROM has it or not.
Well I had to send my wing back as the OK button was broken so I'm trying to acquire a new one. However I flashed the 7.5 of Open Touch and noticed that it wasn't there...I'll look around for the network wizard as I've been reading all the threads and didn't see anything on that. May I ask what ROM you run? When I get a new one I'll flash that and see what I get.
Thanks
Lance

Ok, thanx. I do believe I took a quick look at your Just2Clean. So I think I look at it more in-depth.
Yeah I was thinking of looking at the Just2Clean and the JustMe ROM I think. youmanmike, if you load it up let me know what you think of it. I just bought a new wing on Ebay tonight so hopefully when it gets here I'll be able to flash it. I'd like to hear what you think about the ROM you go with.
Lance
Well youman mike.... looks like ya got plenty of info... Ive yet use any of the "Just" ROMS but I DO plan on making my own ROM eventually.... so his cooking class may help me! I start 3rd shift next week Ivan.... I may start you classes then =) Hopefully youll be around to answer my silly questions =P Let us know what ROM you flash and how it goes youmanmike!
ROM??? Looking at Manilla
I still haven't figured out what ROM to use. I kind of got side track on Manilla. I like the way it looks and from what I've read it sounds like it works good also. Now I'm trying to figure out how to use/install it. LOL

Newbie HTC Tytn II owner query...help greatly appreciated

Hey everyone. I have had my Tytn2 for about 6 months now and am generally displeased with the speed of its operation. As it is my first Windows Mobile phone(v6.1) I hoped that it could supersede my older non smartphones but i am now currently doubting my investment. The idea of system optimisation and sub standard/non existant drivers has recentely come to my attention by surfing the internet trying to find the reasoning behind its sluggish operation. As i am not up to date with many technical terms used on this website and the reasonings behind the slowness of it i am making my post fairly general. I have reaslised though that there are things out there that can boost its speed and operation and make it an overall better phone.
If anyone has some favourite, worthwhile or must have tweaks i can do to my phone it would be much appreciated if you could fill me in, send me a link or generally point me in the right direction.
Cheers for your help in advance and thanks to the people out there who are working on these such things
Put a ROM on it that isn't loaded down with ATT bloatware, and HTC's slowness. You'll need to install a HardSPL on your device, SuperCID unlock your device, flash a radio, and choose a ROM to install on your device.

thankyou for your post. Excuse my ignnorance but what does a ROM actually do to the phone? I have no issues with doing so, i just really dont undertand what it does/the reasoning behind it. And also a radio? i have searched threads but there is so much about installing them etc but not many explinations on their workings. cheers k-semler
ok.. i have been looking around some more and found some more answers to my questions...so it basically boosts the performance? so once this is done what can i load onto my phone to make this all worthwhile? And also once this is done does is load as per normal, just faster? Or does the phone have a whole new layout etc. that the creator made?
cheers

The ROM is equivilant to the OS on a desktop computer, the radio allows communication via cellular, wi-fi, and GPS communications. The HardSPL is equivilant to the MBR on a desktop computer, and the Super CID is equivilant to the BIOS on a computer. (A locked CID will only allow you to install signed ROM's from either your telephone service provider, or HTC, while after a SuperCID unlock, you will be able to flash any ROM you so desire.)

The easiest way to describe it is if you went and bought a name brand computer, when you initially set up the OS, (or use the recovery discs that came with the computer), it will install the OS along with a ton of bloatware, half-functional trial ware, and other unwanted software. However, if you were to boot off of a Windows retail disc, you would have the same operating system, but without all the unnecessary software that the retailer included as an added "bonus". So yes, the computer will operate faster due to not being loaded down by unnessecary software.
Yes, once a new ROM is flashed to your phone, and it was a successful flash, it will boot up as normal, and go through the customization process. After the customization process, it will soft-reset the device, and your phone will boot as normal. It will be as fresh as it would be had it come out of the box that way. Yes, this means that you will lose your contacts list, emails, and everything else you have stored on the phone's main memory. (just like you would lose everything on your HDD if you wiped out your OS and installed it again).
To back up your contacts, simply copy the file PIM.VOL from the root of your device to a microSD card, or your desktop. After you have flashed the phone, rename the new PIM.VOL on the root of the device to PIM.OLD, and copy over your archived PIM.VOL to your phone. Soft reset your device, and boot it up like normal. After the phone restarts, verify you have your contacts list restored, and then delete the file PIM.OLD from your device. The same goes for any other data you may wish to preserve. Copy it off to an SD card, or your desktop computer. After you have flashed your phone, simply copy back all data you have archived. You will obviously need to re-install any applications you wish to have on your phone.
With a customized ROM, you can get anything from a bare-minimum install, (just the OS and nothing more), to a completely new layout with TouchFlo3D, Manala 2D, HTC Home, etc. Look at the ROM development forum, decide what you want your phone to do, and go with it. There are also betas for Windows Mobile 6.5 if you wish to try it, as well as ROM's with PIE 8.5, Opera, and virtually any combination you could possibly want to customize the layout of your phone. The phone will be as a completely different device if that is what you so desire. As far as customisation programs, look into Advanced Configurator 3.3 or Kaiser Tweak. You can also install a registry editor and do the edits manually if you so desire.
thanks for that, that simplifies it somewhat. Should i be attempting to do this to my phone in fear of a major screwup if i lack in depth undertanding of what i am actually doing? i can download the files and follow steps and probably get it right but if something goes wrong i will have not a clue of how to fix it or what i did wrong. Thats my only fear.... what your thoughts?
also can you recommend any decent ROMs for a first timer/do you know anyone i can ask?
RE: Fears
Yeah, first time flashing is pretty scary. Believe me, I know all too well how nerve wracking flashing ROMs can be the first couple of times. Just make sure you follow the directions to a "T" and you should be fine. =]
But, if by some freak accident or some screw-up on your part...there ARE a few fixes depending on what broke. There are various threads in the ROM area on this particular thing.
With that being said, just follow the flashing instructions, make sure you backup your PIM, and then pick yourself a good ROM! =]
For first-timers I'd go with either a standard 6.0-6.1 ROM or something by Dutty or L26. It's been so long and so many flashes since my first that I've honestly forgotten which one I started w/ but Dutty & L26 both make wonderful ROMs and I've had various builds by both.
Best of luck!
i am with 3 mobile: does this influence which ROM i chose. Or is this dealt with during the unlocking phase?
That is dealt with during the unlocking step. After you unlock your device, it will not matter who your carrier is. You could insert a SIM from Hong Kong if you wanted to.
