hi all, have a rogers htc dream, ive been told it is rooted, and i have android 2.1 open eclair on it, but it says it is a t-mobile version. would this affect the phones ability to connect to rogers' 3g network? any help is greatly appreciated...
You need to set the apn configurations.I dont beleave you can set it by default. For this you need to download an app called APNdroid which allows you to set the configuation and find the correct internet configurations for Rogers and apply.

One thing I've never been able to figure out is how to customise network settings as the automatic Connection Setup has never worked properly for me.
I'm using Virgin Australia as my operator and the connection setup always detects it as Optus and configures it accordingly.
I then have to go into Connections and change the Access Point it uses to connect (instead of 'internet' it's 'VirginInternet') and then it works fine.
Is there some way I can do this via registry key in my SDconfig.txt or hack the connection setup util to do this properly? (I've tried updated versions of the connsetup too but none of them do it properly).
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
if you have a virgin mobile simcard that should take care of everything for you.
I do, but it doesn't work as I've mentioned.
Maybe it's something to do with my number originally being ported from Optus to Virgin (though I definitely have a Virgin mobile sim).
Funnily enough, the operator is recognised on the front manila tab as Virgin - it's only in the connection setup that it gets it wrong every time, and I'm sick of having to change this manually every rom install.
If anyone has any solution to this problem, let me know.
So how long have you been dealing with this? Have you been billed by Optus for using their network? If the front page is showing virgin mobile I think you should be good. My old Samsung Blackjack used to say i was on Rogers, when in fact it was on Fido, a subsidy of Rogers.... I would call virgin mobile and Optus if I were you to get this sorted out.
No - I'm not getting billed by Optus.
Reason it's defaulting to Optus is that Virgin are using Optus's network in Australia and basically onselling it or whatever the term is. They're like a virtual provider I guess you could say.
I can't use the settings that are auto-configured - it just won't work at all until I change the access point name.
Unfortunately, knowing this doesn't help me at all - hence why I'm trying to find a way to automatically fix this every time I do a rom install - so if we get back to my original question - does anyone know of any way to change the default access point name via a registry change or any way I can 'fix' the connection setup app to do the right thing for my phone.

I have the same problem, did you find an answer?
Hello:
I've done some searching and I cant find the answer, so excuse my post.
I am living in Shanghai, China and I have a 3G sim card with China Unicom (wcdma). I tried using my 3G sim on my Asus P565 and it is able to connect to the 3G network BUT when I put it into my Tmobile G1, my 3G network cannot be accessed (as a matter of fact, i dont think I can even access my 2G data network).
My phone specs are:
black tmobile g1
Latest radio installed
HardSPL
cyanogen 1.4 recovery
tried using cyanogen 4.2.6 rom
tried using TheOfficial AOSP-1.6_r1.4 DRD20 (Donut) v2.3.2
Is this a rom problem? am I skipping something? is 3G even supported on these modded roms?
Please help! Thank you.
This seems to be related to your APN settings.
Check that your APN is defined correctly in your G1 (copy definitions from you Asus P565).

Im not sure what you are talking about. Shouldnt the 3G network be working automatically just like the regular 2G network? At least thats how it works with all other 3G phones.
I dont see how I would need to set up APN. I could be mistaken though...
Did the 3G work before you flashed roms?
It might be a network compatibility issue like AT&T, I don't have 3G either haha.
Quick Google turned these up
APN = uninet
user = guest
pass = guest

I did not try using my 3G sim before flashing. I flashed right after getting the phone.
I tried a couple of APN settings already with no luck, but i am starting to believe that is the root of the problem.
Any other input is appreciated... this problem is really bothering me.
Hello all.
I just got this awesome phone from my in laws that live in USA, just got it unlocked to be used in Canada for Fido or Rogers network.
Almost everything work great on fido network except i cant connect to 3g internet with this phone. I called fido and the gave me the VPN address, username and password, the DNS information and the proxy information.
After all that this **** still dont work. I've been told the only way i can get the 3g internet to work is to find another user with the same phone or the same windows mobile version on the same network, and copy his connection setting.
Can someone please help with this i really dont want to pay for services anymore "3g internet" if i cant get ti to work.
Best Regards M... Aleksander
if the settings from the service provider doesnt work, your problem might be related to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=596710
Thank for post that thread.
I have looked over this thread and i doesnt answer my question.
what i need to find out is the 3gprs setting from windows mobile 6.1 on fido or rogers network and make sure everything matches up with my setting.
do they have settings for windows mobile in general? same settings for every wm device as far as i know...
Majority of the setting should be the same except all th e proxy vpn and dns should come from the same carrier "fido"
Here are the settings I have...
Fido GPRS
Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access point name: internet.fido.ca
User name: fido
Password: fido
Domain: (blank)
Take a look here as well.
I am brand new to this site and this is my first post so please bear with a newbie. Just got a great deal online for a new Rogers HTC Dream. I bought an unlock code in order to use the phone with Telus my current carrier. I bought a sim card and had my plan changed to a data plan. Now here's the part that is frustrating me, I can not access the Telus data network. The phone works fine for phoning and text messaging, wifi works great, but if I try to access mobile data network I get "No network Connection". I checked with Telus added the Telus APN settings and set as default and still no luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Do you have a 3G or H icon in the Notification bar?
Unfortunately I have neither.
Try getting the Telus APN settings. Then go to APN settings and add it in. This SHOULD work.
APNhav
I called Telus tech support, HTC support and setup the Telus apn and it is set as the default all before posting here. However I still can't access the data network. Will I have to root the phone in order to access the data network?
i have a cdma htc hero200 witch is flashed to cricket for talk and text i also have cricket broadband service. i really need help setting up the cricket bradband workaround on my phone im a complete noob to android i just got the phone yesterday and any help would be greatly appreciated please detailed instructions. and im sorry if this has been addressed before
If you're talking about getting data services working on the hero, first you will need to know your 6-digit MSL code. For cricket I think it's 000000 by default.
With the code, you can access and edit the EPST settings by dialing ##778#. Then you will need to make sure all of your M.IP settings are configured to be compatible with cricket. I didn't have data/MMS working on my phone either until I put in all the correct settings here.
