Can it be done? Just curious.

Yes it can. Just installed swype after downloading it from my computer. Just download the .apk app file and copy it to your sd card. Then use a file manager application to locate the file ( I used Astro) then just tap on the file and press open app manager and install it from there.
hope this helps

There is a script floating around somewhere that can do that.
I have also used appmonster to install from a folder called appmanager on the sdcard.
Edit: Looks like you beat me to it Prophecy. I type too s l o w .
Also, I guess a file manager type program would work better than appmonster. I just use that because it is quick to install and I already have my apps backed up.
you can download the scripts that i wrote. view my thread on them in the first link in my signature for more info.

Apps Installer
1) Install Apps Installer (from Market)
2) On your computer, download the apk of the application you want to install
3) Connect your phone to the PC and mount the SDCard
4) Put the .apk at the root of SDCard
5) Run Apps Installer from your telephone
install "ES File Explorer" from market (free)
search for your package and click it.
"ES File Explorer" chooses software is needed for application
@be0ne
@restecool
There must be some faulty information since I wasn't able to find both...
EDIT:
ok. it must be searched as "appsinstaller".
this is cool!
I'm using the "ES File Explorer"
Now...I need a .apk file to test that out
I have some non-market apps that i downloaded on my computer. Is there a certain place I am supposed to copy the .apk on the phone or am I supposed to use a program? I've heard some thing about AppsInstaller but I am still not 100% sure about how the process goes. I've got the OCLF and Titanium back-up working so I'm pretty sure my root is good as well.

Go into the Market and search for "Astro". Its a file manager. Once you've downloaded it open it up and go to whatever directory that you saved the apk's to. Select whichever apk you want to install, and the default application installer should come up. Also if you have the Vibrant you could use the stock file manager. Hope this answers your?.

Thanks grid and Prasad. Downloading right now
I've got my nook color rooted with ManualNooter 4.5.18 but I'm not sure where to put the apk files. Do they go on the SD card and if so in which folder or just on the card. I also need to know how I then install or access them. Thanks
I just place the APKs in a folder called backup apps on the SC card, I don't think it matters much.
For some apps I did have to copy the APK to internal in the Nook, I just used a folder in the my files folder.
The important thing is that you can find the files once they are copied.
I use ES File Explorer to navigate to my APKs and install them. It's free from the market. As for where to put any APKs that you want to load manually, anywhere that makes sense to you should be fine. I have a folder on the SD card called "downloads" that I stick everything into.
When I use that program it says install blocked, and my phone is set to block installation. Any way around this?

You have the non market installs button clicked right?
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
Yes I have the box checked
I have the button in nookColor Tools checked. Is there another??
I see there is a new market 3.3.11. I've downloaded it but it will not let me install it. Keep getting application not installed. How do I install it manually?

Just wanted to let you know that it installed fine for me. Didn't have to use a special method.

ok so wouldn't install for me either. i am running monter rom 1.2 just for the record.
i used root explorer, but any file program that gets you into your system app folder will work.
go to system/app/vending.apk now you can rename this file, but i moved it to a folder on my sd card where i keep system stuff just in case i need it again.
after this restart your phone, and try to install the new market.apk. i just hit install right from my download file. everything worked fine.
hope this helps.

Yo,
So I went over to CyanogenMod's wiki site, downloaded the Google Apps (G.Apps) for CyanogenMod 9.
I then stripped the .zip of everything but the "META-INF" folder and all it's contents and the "system" folder but with only the an empty "apps" folder inside.
What this allows me to do is install alot of apps from Google Play all at once through CWM. (APK's ripped using Root Explorer from within "data > app")
But my question is, is how can I install these apps but have them visible under the "Downloaded" tab from Application Management menu like I've just downloaded it from Google Play its self?
Thank you to anyone who can help
Flash that zip file from the CWM recovery over your ROM.very simple.

I installed some apps using this exact method for a friend using SlimICS 4.2... but it didn't bring the apps up in the "Downloaded" tab...
I haven't actually tried this my self yet but will very shortly... will let you know if it comes up in the "Downloaded" tab under CM9

I'm not sure but maybe move it to /data/app and then see.
