that's like saying "should I go back to a pentium 3 or keep my i7 computer?"
But seriously, I messed around on my old G1 yesterday and now I wonder how I lived with it.

the rooted g1, and i'll even do you the favor of taking that n1 off your hands.

This Except, I think I could put it to better use

Why would you go back from a Nexus?! I was messing around on my old MT3G that I gave
to my dad (unrooted for him) and the screen is so small... it's also pretty slow.

I dont know why you would go back to a G1. the only reason i would go back is for all the cool roms that they didnt have when i had a g1. would be great to just test em out.

I've had my Nexus for exactly 4 hours and 6 minutes. I would not go back to my Dream/G1 if you paid me to.

Rooted Motorola StarTac. Amazing. I think that Cyanogen actually broke the code to go from Analog to Digital.

Thinking about buying the G1

Ive been considering getting an android phone for quite a while so im thinking of the g1 becuase it is cheap and it has a keyboard, what are your guys thoughts, i have a fuze right now.
Don't buy a g1. I've had this phone since november 2008 and I can't wait to get rid of it. You should spend the money and get a better android phone, such as the droid, nexus, or wait for the htc desire. You will definitely have a better android experience with one of these phones. Its just to much hacking you have to do to make a G1 good.

Yeah I would stay away from the Cliq. There are roms for it, but there isn't as much development for it as there is for the G1. You'll find it to be quite boring and it's stuck on 1.5. If it's a choice between the two, get the G1.
Lol... Its pretty funny how everyone is saying the G1 is bad and don't buy it. Give it a month, there will be something then the N1 and everyone's going to say, "Don't buy the N1 its such garbage." G1 is a good phone. It won't take you to the moon, but it's not bad. =] I personally have the myTouch. I honestly wish I would have got G1 for keyboard, though. That's another reason I hate the N1... Yea, it's sexy... but touch screen keyboards have proved to be nothing but trouble for me. Besides misclicking (which you get better at) they usually lag. Sometimes slightly - sometimes horribly. They're NEVER as fast as a physical keyboard, though. They also prove to be trouble for games or things that use a keyboard. Most have full touch screen support, but I personally like to use a keyboard to play a game if it's an option. That's just my opinion.
I bought one off eBay for under $200 and I love it. I don't see how any other phone is better than it right now. It was a five row keyboard, trackball, and with all the custom roms available, it fits every niche that I want.

Beat THAT!
HTC DREAM (people... please call it what it actually IS and not what it has been DE-branded to...) is a very flexible device. Perfectly capable of running the latest builds of android.
The problem that some people are having is that the manufacturer (HTC) has decided to stop supporting it. This is no different than what will happen with the GN1 or other android phones made by HTC.
And the main thing to keep in mind is that this is a PHONE, not a supercomputer. Does it REALLY NEED to be the latest super-duper over powered crazy thing? NO. It really doesn't.
DREAM is very well known, and hacked up the wahzoo. There is virtually nothing that you can't make it do. Right down to being jtag-able.
Fact is simple; if you want maximum flexibility in your phone (more important than peak performance), DREAM is the ticket.
Cool guys, thx for the advice i defintley think i am going to purchase 1 off ebay, but im thinking if i should get the brown/black or the white, i saw the white can get a few nicks on in but it looks nice, what do u guys have?

I would say overall that I am very happy with this phone.
Especially with the hacks and mods that I've done to it.
Its fast, stable and looks great.
I am more than happy with this phone, (Especially since I traded a Sidekick LX for it) I haven't been this happy with a phone in a while.
I used to have the HTC Excalibur and coming from Windows Mobile to Android is phenomenal, everything is so simple once you learn and get the hang of it.
So if you have the cash and you are curious just buy it and learn the basics!
Well worth it!
What attracted to me about this phone is that it is able to use the keyboard( hard keyboard is obviously easier to use) to type and gaming. Moreover, the phone is able to be modded and a variety of ROMs that might suit your style to choose from.
I would actually want to buy a second HTC Dream if I could. Seriously, if you really want to utilise your PDA phone properly, the Dream can do it all for you. However, if you really want high end gaming and more sensitive touch screen & proximity sensors to show off, then it's better to get the latest phone. I find that as it is, I am utilising only 50% of what the Dream is capable of. So I have been using it since last year and will continue on until I cannot do certain things that are important for work. Just my 2cents.
Coming from all different kinds of OS's, Sony, WM for many years, and finally the awesome Android OS.
Its hard to compete against it. I like the idea of a quality physical keyboard and screen. There is so much development and quality Rom releases here for our phone.
Devs know this and that is why they stay and keep doing what they do so well for all of us. Themers as well deserve much respect for their hard work and commitment.
Bottom Line: Buy a G1, you'll be hard pressed to find a better android phone at this time.

g1 dead plz help

my t mobile is dead..couple of days ago it turn itself of i turned it back on and it when into safe mode then it turned of again and now it want come back on at all tryed charging it but nothing no lights no nothing i took battery out and left it for awhile put it back in then it lite up but no screen came on and would not turn of so took battery out again and still nothing its just dead if any could help i would be grateful but to me i think it should go in the bin as i didnt get the phone of t mobile so can't take it back to them
g1 in the bin
g1 has got to be the worst phone i have ever put my hands on load of **** think its time for the bin only place its good for but thanks for the help
Try with another battery. If it does not work, your phone is completely dead.
I had similar issues with my old G1 and the only solution for me /after trying with another battery/ was to buy used G1 from ebay with broken screen, in order to replace the motherboard.
thanks
thanks but i'm not going to buy another g1 as i know its only about 7 or 8 months old and if theres a problem so soon then theres always going to be problems not a very good phone at all thinking of getting a nokia phone instead they don't seem to have all the problems that these phones do cheers anyway
maybe all the run on sentances lack of punctuation and other stuff just made it go insane and give up and just die because it didnt want to put up with it anymore and because everyone else out there never had any problems with their g1 at all so maybe you can get a replacement if you have the insurance or whatever but you already said you wouldnt have another one because its a total pos phone and i guess you better just go buy an iphone or whatever from ebay because they usually almost always sometimes have decent phones on ebay and when you get it you need to put an otter box on it to keep it in good condition or else your screen will smack slap give a dog a bone break in two piecs and youll be all BOOOO HOOO HOOO HOOOOOO MY IPHONE ARE BROKED AGAIN so then youll drop att like a hot pertado and come back to tmo with a brand new nexus one but hten you realize you need to keep your att contract for 2 more yearzes and you have to get a att nexus one instead of the tmo nexus one and youll be happy and in hog heaven ok cool great k thx bye

You could try a Sprint Touch Pro (you can get one for $100-$150 in either Market Place or eBay). Plus, there is work in progress for an Android port for it. I would suggest the TP2 but it goes into the $200-300 range.

what do you mean bed esn and 'fix it'
i found one on ebay for 150 witch is pretty resonable im still looking tho it says for parts only due to bad esn but it says it works 100 percent but cant be activated with sprint what exactly does this mean
or a perfectly fine one just outta the repair center for one sixty i only have twenty soo i guess i need to keep savin
ok i found out what esn is and it apperntly very hard to fix and sometimes cant be fixed darn ohh well i just save for one with a good esn
Check craigslist and get an Vogue/ppc6900.
Whatever you get, make sure it runs android from NAND.
I had a TP2 and mogul and ran android from SD
and it kills the battery to make it not worthwhile.
The ppc6900 I have though, runs android from nand and
it's like having a baby EVO. (i haven't had any other android phone
such as the moment or hero to compare).
I got my vogue from craigslisth for $50 with charger, manuals, data cable,
and extended battery+cover. I'm glad I did.
having a keyboard is useless if you don't have battery life.
I'm looking to get an evo with bad esn, even if it can't be repaired yet.

alot of people have been returning the evo mainly because of the size. plus 4G isn't all that great right now. if your going to get a 4G phone then wait till 4G is everywhere like 3G. i got the hero for 79.99 with new contract and i couldnt be happier! rooted with a custom rom and overclocked to 728... this thing is badass!

Thinking about trading a MT3G for a G1..

As the title says, I have been thinking about trading my MT3G 32B for a T-Mobile G1. I figure that the G1 is probably a better phone for me, since I do a ton of texting, and don't have a bunch of apps installed (only about 25).
What are your opinions? Do you think it would be a good idea to switch from a MyTouch to a G1?
Thanks!
Why wouldn't you switch to a newer generation android device, rather than the first android device? I mean, the g1 is still a great device, I loved it, but newer phones are significantly faster and can run more apps more efficiently.

Yeah, I know. But I'm waiting for my upgrade, which is in September. And I figured that I could probably just trade my MT3G for a used G1, and barely have to pay anything, because they're practically the same phone.
And I don't really have a whole lot of money, since I'm just 17 and don't have a job. Haha.

the g1 is only mildly harder to work with rootwise than the MT3G 32B because of spl's and such, but besides that, if you dont need lots of apps theres not really a downside.

I don't think SPLs and stuff would be a problem, since I've already flashed those on my MT3G. Also, I just rooted my brothers G2, and I know that is harder to root than a G1.
Also, would there be any noticeable speed difference between the MT3G and the G1? Or is the only difference having less storage space for apps?

Well, for whatever reason, the g1 does not clock as high stably, so that's a minor downside, but other than that they are the exact same chipset and board. So there's prettymuch no difference except for the keyboard. As long as trading it wouldn't affect your ability to get an upgrade in september there isn't really a downside. However, if trading for the g1 would eliminate your ability to upgrade in september I would just stick with the mytouch for 10 months and deal with it till you can get a newer gen phone.

If you aren't trading/buying the g1 from tmobile, like if you get it off of craigslist or something, then it wouldn't affect your upgrade capability, but if you get it from tmobile it will. My friend just gave me a mytouch slide a few weeks ago, but I can still upgrade in september since I didn't get the phone from tmobile

Yeah, I wasn't planning on getting it from T-Mobile anyway. I was thinking about just buying a G1 on eBay, and then maybe selling my MT3G. There are some G1's on there that are in pretty good condition, and are only about $50.

I'm someone who went from a Milestone to the N1. I made the jump when my Milestone overheated one day and I thought it had died (but returned to life approximately a week and half later)... I decided to go with a N1 because it was relatively cheap and (still) a great phone despite its age. I figured I could sell it if I ended up not liking it.
I've been using the N1 for about 2-3 months now, and I can't ever imagine going back to using my Milestone as my regular phone. I just put a Best Skins Ever skin on my N1 last night and have been using my Milestone in the mean time while the skin sets...oh man is that thing SLOW. Even with my Milestone running CM7 and overclocked, it takes forever for apps to open and memory management is terrible. I cannot wait till my N1 skin dries so I can start using it again!!!
I think the N1 would be a good choice for you if you want a decent phone to use while perhaps waiting for a better phone to come out. Besides, even if you buy it and you end up not liking it, it's not like you can't sell it on Ebay or even on the marketplace on this forum.
I will say I miss my hardware keyboard terribly. But if I had to pick between my Milestone's hardware keyboard and my N1's blazing speed, I'd pick the speed every time.
EDIT: Totally forgot to mention that the trackball ROCKS.
thx your reply, i'm using cm7 rc13 build on my milestone, not that slow for me, rc13 are the best rom i've try before, u can test it yourself. for ur advice i'm going to buy this phone now. thank you!!
No problem! Good luck!
I'm sure you'll love it!
