Android Builds with Working Camera - Touch CDMA Android Development

So I've been a lurker on the boards for awhile, following the Android development and experimenting as I can, since I want to start doing my own ports. However, recently I've been running into an issue that I'm trying to fix.
I've searched the boards and have only found one solution, but I want to see if there are other options.
Do any Android Builds have a working camera? I know zenulator developed a Donut 1.6 build with a working camera but I found it's not nearly fast enough on my system (Vouge running Myn's Warm Donut) for me to make the switch, in addition to not being updated since November. Are there any other builds with a camera? I'm not too upset, it just irks me that I have to reboot WM just to take pictures.

Not sure what you are talking about. All donut builds have a working camera (the quality is not as good as WinMo, but it works)
The Eclair builds do not have working cameras.

In some of the kernels the camera app is soft resetting the device

I believe you need a kernal from 4-6-10(April 6th) or earlier to avoid camera reset.

I'm guessing that fixing the camera quality is not an easy task otherwise it would probably be done. But I think it would be great if we could get the same picture quality as winmo. Is anyone working on this?

id like to know this aswell aslo is anyone working on video with the camera?

VirginIncVuture, [ROM] Myn’s Warm Donut - [RLS 5 - 04/24/2010] -Added 240x320 Complaint Dialer 05/07 All work's great!!! But i like Eclair with no worked Camera, Voice Dial, Bluetooth!

Third inquiry as to the camera quality.
Does anybody have plans for the camera?

doesn't sound like it man.

Yeah I worked really hard at getting the camera to work through Donut only to later look at the actual picture quality and it wasn't even worth my time (
Shame really...

Yeah I mean the quality on Myn's rom is OK I guess. But it's not really worth the development time unless it looks like it did while using it on WinMo. Totally a shame...

Sorry, but whose dev time is it not worth?

I find the camera results are *better* in Android than WinMo. Do not judge the camera by the preview, which is pretty crappy on vogue android. The picture will not look like the preview.
The lack of any camera support in Eclair for the past 4 months is the only thing keeping me off it. I really wish I knew what was wrong.

Really?
I always assumed that the low quality pics in Android would look the same on my laptop. I will have to take a look for myself.
Thx...

myn's for sure the camera works at 320x480 if you use a non native resolution the camera for me has not worked

The quality is atrocious no matter what.
I have used warm donuts 320x240 and this is a sample of 320x480

Yeah the quality is actually pretty bad, its not just a preview issue.

is there a way to get the touchwiz/default/samsung camera installed onto any of the above listed roms? and if there is...could someone point me to where the needed apks/instructions are to install said camera?
thanks!

this; the froyo camera you were used to not only would take some work to make functional on gingerbread, it is touchwiz which multiplies that by 100. Remember how it took a really long time for jt to get the camera working on cm7? he had to rewrite drivers pretty much, you would have to essentially reverse engineer his work (I assume) to make froyo/touchwiz things work.
In the meantime, try out miui, they have a great camera with a lot of features like froyo did.

[Q] Android 4.0 even possible?

I would overclock the overclock to have face unlock. Seriously.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8992815/xda/G1 T-MOBILE ICS/androidinstall.tar
This is the furthest I got and it doesn't even boot. It is a port from the version on the t-mobile g1, ported with the files of Scooter's gingerbread build. Give it try in logcat.
But I really don't think we got an change anymore (except when DZO comes back to develop for the kaiser), the kaiser is done, the kaiser had fallen....
The best thing you can do for face unlock is find an app in the market or something, besides I don't think the kaiser has the front facing camera to properly do face unlock. And the RAM and proc also make it very difficult to run on the kaiser....
I meant to say that the quality of the kaiser's camera probably not sufficient to pull off a proper and reliable face unlock: So I am sorry if you misunderstood!
e
My kaiser has a front facing camera!
So, I'll try your build in HaRET, then PM DZO, but I don't have the time/money to get anyome interested in this.

Of course it has front camera, but it doesn't work in Android .
Oh.
Oh. Well, in that case, I guess I'll just stick to Gingerbread.
There's really nothing else that interests me in 4.0
Not to mention the rear camera doesn't even work in Gingerbread.
I'd suggest (no flames please) that you purchase an Android phone that meets the hardware requirements needed for ICS which, unless the carrier force-uploads an update or you manually update the OS, you'll have to research and possibly compile yourself.
I'd rather just stay with an out-of-date phone than spend hours looking for my new "perfect" phone that I'll be proud of.

[Q] Rom suggestions for ICS camera?

Hello,
I want to turn my old N1 into an ICS camera. I'm going into some dicey country and dont want to bring my GN, but I really want my N1 to have the ICS camera app. I have a DICApac for it and want to do some light underwater usage and lots of quick response "action" shots (fishing).
Anyone have any recommendations on which ROM would be best for me? I quite literally only care about the camera functionality from ICS and the speed of use. And the SD card All other functionality will not be used.
At first glance it appears that these are my two best options?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366897
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557606
Will either of those suit my needs? Is there something better I didnt see?
Great. Thank you for your time.

Is your N1 rooted and has blackrose HBOOT installed? If no, then you don't want to flash ICS if you are planning on taking it with you because ICS is still WIP. Use the Gingerbread ROMs for now.
Agree. The ICS camera for the Nexus One isn't yet perfected.
I'd recommend CM7.2 stable or MIUI Gingerbread. At least they won't let you down.

Well, I've gotta commend you for conceding this might be a tricky task, my man.
I hate the easy answer of "ICS isn't what you're looking for," as I know sometimes it's the kind of thing you just really gotta have.
I'll say this:
You'll hear reports of the ICS camera being a bit kinked up right now. These reports are somewhat true.
The ICS CAMERA isn't so much the problem as is the functionality of the camera APP.
Meaning: In my experience, the camera (still photos) worked fine. If you're looking to do any sort of recording, the ROM simply is not able to accomodate it. The devs (bless 'em for all their hard work) have yet to wade through fixing the video coding to allow for flawless video recording/playback within the camera app.
My suggestion:
If you really want ICS, download one of the distros (I really enjoyed BCM CM9) and test it out. Go in expecting ****e -- not an amazing platform for camera-play. If it ends up meeting your needs for speed and quality (and, I guess, style), then you've got a winner.
For what it's worth though, I actually entertained a hiatus from the ICS party and flashed the stable release of CM7.2 (recently released).
I'll just say it felt like I was playing around on my Atrix again, and Gingerbread has an UNDENIABLE speed/response advantage over ICS. I feel these advantages are crucial to photography and that Gingerbread ROMs might be able to better accommodate your demands.
I could be wrong, though...never want to assume...and if there's a vital feature of ICS's you're keen on having, let us know. We'll try our best to guide you to a good ICS photography-platform (even if extensive tweaking is involved), and if that just doesn't seem possible, I'm sure there's a way to get what you're looking for in a GB ROM.
Good luck though either way, breaux.
Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it. I'm going to dig into some GB roms and see what works best for me.

[Q] HTC One Camera - Lack of flash focus

So haven't found many reactions to this problem, but the HTC One seems to lack flash focus.
As far as I know most other flagship phones have this functionality.
So how do y'all manage to take pictures in dark environments where it's too dark too focus normally???
Kinda sucks, the only workaround is to shoot a movie with the flash on and click the photo icon
Does anyone know if this will be added in future updates?? How do other HTC phones handle this like the One X??
I know what you mean. It's terrible really, I hate the camera on this thing. In Snapchat you can't even use the flash because the image just goes nearly fully white

Yeah it sucks.. I don't get it how HTC really screwed up the camera part. Don't know if it's something that can be helped with an update/3rd party software...
I thought that I was the only one with that problem.. It makes pictures in the complete darkness look terrible. Hopefully it's fixed in the 4.3 sense builds.

Yeah exactly, pretty useless at a party or concert or something :-/
I don't understand why there aren't many people complaining about this issue.
How do other HTC phones deal with this? I can't remember anymore if my old HTC Desire was able to flash focus or not.
This past weekend I took the first photo with flash since I bought the One two months ago. I don't like to take photos with flash and I prefer to have some photos looking a bit grainy but with more natural colors.
I decided to turn the flash and the photo came out of focus. It's the first one I take with the flash but I'm not going to touch it again.
HTC needs to improve the camera firmware/software in a hurry, there are issues like too much hunting in low light conditions and loooong time to focus in same scenarios. The autofocus should be faster, specially as the phone doesn't have a physical button. I really miss the physical two-step shutter I had on the 8X and Lumia 920.

Camera quality would probably tank in CM, just like it did on the G3.
CM is a nice idea, but if it tanks the camera quality what's the point.
that's the main reason I got this phone, I wanted an excellent camera.

You obviously never owned a G3. Or at least never ran CM on the G3. No difference between camera quality between stock and CM on the T-Mobile G3. Can't say anything for the other carriers G3. I owned the G3 for a year and I took better, clearer pics with that phone on CM12 than any other phone I've owned and I've owned about 50
I did own a T-Mobile G3 and I had cm12 on it for quite awhile.
maybe your more skilled of a photographer that I
But focusing was much slower and image processing took a big dip for me.
Sorry but its a wide known fact that CM roms have lower quality photos compared to stock. Literally every phone they touch has suffered from low quality camera issues.
delete
Camera quality is all in the image processing libraries and sensor firmware that ships in the stock ROM. Cyanogen cannot re-use those because they're proprietary and they'd get sued for illegally distributing them, so they have to use inferior open-source ones. Sadly, unless a genius developer writes brand new libraries and firmware, we're stuck with crap-ass camera quality in Cyanogen, no way around it.
I am with OP on this one. I am not a photographer so I did not get this phone for the camera. I got it because it is simply a beast phone. The camera was just an added bonus. I can't wait to see what CM/AOSP ROMs come out for this thing when they are in DD stability. This phone is just awesome as it is but if I'm able to put BlissPop on this sucker, well then I am going to be one happy camper!
