GPS and radios? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible for the radio version to affect GPS/navigation performance?
The problem I'm having when delivering pizzas is my Nexus rarely finds a GPS signal and when it does I lose data connection... Ive tried toggling airplane mode and anything else I can think to reset connections with no avail
I'm using Kings latest D2N Rom and before I was using Desire ReMix, same issue with both.

Flash a different radio and see if it helps.

Just flashed EPE76, problem is still present... However in the Build # it still says ERE27. Not sure where to go from here... Should I use the stock radio (ERD79), or try flashing again? I'm afraid or losing a phone and gaining a paperweight worth half a grand

Just wondering if you ever get this problem solves. I am experiencing similar problem. I recently rooted my nexus one with modaco rom and my navigation system voice guidance is not working. In the notification bar, it shows gray color. The voice will not talk but the map shows. It says "Searching for GPS" at the bottom screen. It gives all route directions and maps though.
Please where can I go to activate the voice guidance or what exactly do I need to do to correct this?
Thanks

Lots of 3G dropouts!!

Hello all,
My issue with this phone has been mentioned here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=384f4daca48e10b1&hl=en
My basic problem is that atleast 4-5 times each and every day the 3G connection suddenly drops out. As the link says, I see the "up arrow" blinking, but no action from the "down arrow" next to the 3G symbol on the top right corner of the phone. At this point, all apps complain about no network connection. About 45-60 seconds later the connectivity is restored automatically, and I can happily do anything on the Internet again.
I've had the phone for 1 week and this happens regardless of location or signal strength. So I've had this problem at work, at home, while driving etc. The dropouts also occur even when the number of bars indicating signal strength is 3 or 4.
These constant dropouts are really infuriating and I'm not sure if it's a network problem or device problem. Has anyone else had this? I'll be very grateful with any suggestions.
Thanks.
same here, I dont know if this caused by my ****ty provider.
I'd like to try new radio but it seems it still has problem with bluetooth
I had this problem too, it was very frustrating. However the new radio 5.08 appears to have solved the issue for me (I don't use BT currently so can't report on that aspect)
Ask a work around, try setting your phone to "WCDMA Only". That improved things for me previously.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I have also had this problem and I am on stock FRF91. It really slows me down when I need to quickly perform a task that's data related.

This is exactly what I'm doing.
The internet oon the phone barely works on 2G, so I lock it on 3G only mode.
Have this problem on stock.
Also drops calls when it goes down to 1 bar (in areas where another phone with the same provider will have 2-3+ bars)
This has been discussed in detail here

Thanks for the replies guys. So if a mod completely gets rid of the problem, that means it's a software issue right? What's this radio 5.08 that solves the problem? Can I apply this chagne without rooting?
I'm in Australia, running stock 2.1-update1 (EPF30).
you could try update to Froyo

Oh, so Froyo will fix this issue? That's great.
I don't mind waiting for Vodafone to release Froyo then. Shouldn't be long now.

Hmm I see. I'll wait and see I suppose.
I'm surprised if it's just a software issue, why it hasn't been released to everyone.
3G and APN
I have froyo it does not solved the problem.
I also have an issue with the APN, I can't change the MCC to 425 from the default, it wont save it, any suggestion?

I tried going though this, but unfortunately it's not obvious to me what I should be doing. I'll include my details here:
Firmware: Android 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 32.26.0024U_4.04.00.03_2
Build number: EPF30
Could someone please help me out here? Is it possible to upgrade just the radio version somehow?
How do the CM mods manage to get a radio version better than Froyo?
Thanks again.

[Q] Froyo GPS Lock Problem

Ok...so after updating to Froyo my GPS is not working. Not only that, my phone can't seem to find my approximate location even after enabling "Use Wireless networks". I used GPS Status app from the market and I confirmed the phone was seeing several satellites, but it was getting no lock. I had no problem with my GPS with 2.1 aside from losing my location occasionally when I drive through the downtown.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I'm running my phone on Rogers network, unlocked and rooted.

You didn't say what version of Froyo you are running but I'd change my modem file and use one of the alternate ones that DocRambone has. There's a thread on this but I find the ZSJPE (Hong Kong) version to be superb (and our company develops an app for the phone that uses GPS for golfers) - very quick, very accurate...
Oh I'm using JK4 from Bell..and kernel version 2.6.32.9....
Edit: Oh and I have also done factory reset/cache wipe...and it's still doing that...I want to see if I can fix this without changing the modem file or anything like that...
I'm having the exact same problem since upgrading to the official 2.2 release from 2.1
EDIT: Bell Galaxy S Vibrant, Unlocked and running on Rogers. Not rooted.

Ok...so I'm a bit relieved to know I'm not the only one out there...From the things I've been reading it doesn't seem to affect phones running on Bell networks..but shouldn't GPS be not affected regardless of the network you're running on? I don't see why it's refusing to get a lock...
I can't believe no one else is having this problem, maybe we're the only ones unlocking??
I was also having this problem. I updated to bell froyo using kies, and am unlocked using rogers. I loaded gps test, set it so it wouldn't shut off the screen, and let it run for about 30 min in a window. Eventually it got solid lock on a couple sats and it now seems a lot snappier to get a lock.

Ok, good news! At least for me anyway... I decided to try keeping my GPS on and let my phone to try and find my location..however long it was going to take. I don't think it took me 30 minutes but it took me good 10 minutes before my GPS found my location. I think the problem was because I'm having trouble getting location information based on my wireless network and updating to Froyo and doing a factory reset must have deleted my satellite schedule. Right now I'm just so glad to find out my GPS isn't broken! :-D You should try the same thing I did.

Thanks Yeria, that sounds like the problem we're having.
I do find that if I give it enough time, It will get a pure GPS lock, but I'm not getting any aGPS (the network based)
That thread you link sounds like the solution, but unfortunately I can't seem to access the file they tell you to modify
I too have GPS problems right after upgrading to official froyo. And it kept getting worse when i tried custom ROM. I tried factory resetting and format all my sd card, cache wipe etc hoping that it will return to normal like when i was in 2.1 elcair but to no avail. I don't know if some bad code was left behind when i did the official upgrade through kies. All i can say is it was working fine when i was at 2.1 then suddenly went bad after 2.2.
By the way, my problem is my GPS lock kept of disconnecting every now and then thus rendering my GPS useless as it kept on displaying my location as "off road" even though i'm on a clear highway with clear and bright skies!
ahh, if I root the phone I can get to
/dbdata/databases/com.google.android.gsf/gservices.db
unfortunately, this phone doesn't have sqlite3 installed!! I need to try and find that
EDIT: Found a copy of sqlite3 and was able to push it to the phone. edited the db as people suggested! I'll have to test it on Monday

Based on what I have found so far, and assuming your aGPS or any other wireless based assistance features are not functioning properly, doing a reset and cache clear will not help with your GPS at all. I have read that the phone will try to download the satellite schedules directly from GPS satellites if you're using purely satellite based GPS option. It'll be slow so it will take longer to get a lock and that's why phone will use other means to shorten the lock time. Once the schedule is downloaded, they said there shouldn't be any problem until the schedule expires, at which point you will have to download the schedule again.
I think the reason you're losing lock frequently might be because your phone doesn't have a clear view of the sky..? I used my phone GPS to drive around Toronto, Vaughan and Mississauga last night for at least 4+ hours, and I did not have any problem.
So, I tested today after updating the db.... no agps still..
Anyone else still.having issues with agps?
GPS works, just no agps since 2.2

This is why I unfortunately have to use an old Tom Tom GPS!
i'm having this problem too. i finally got it picking up quickly on 2.1 but once i updated i haven't been able to ever get a solid lock. has anyone found a solution yet??
Now that my wireless location service is kind of working I thought aGPS should also naturally work but I guess not... My GPS takes a pretty long time to start up and I haven't found any fix for this..
It's funny because I didn't really have any problem with my GPS with 2.1 but now I do with 2.2...

[Q] Wi-Fi To 3G

Hi,
Got a really annoying issue with my Nexus One that has been happening since the Froyo days, when I leave home to go to work I turn the Wi-Fi off on my phone to save battery. Sometimes I use the widget sometimes I go through the settings.
The problem is that the 3G doesn't alway's kick in, the only way for me to get 3G working is to turn my phone off and on which always works.
Any suggestions on why this is happening and how to resolve them?
I am running Stock Ginger Bread on my Nexus One on the the Vodafone network in the UK.
Try checking your signal strength: *#*#4636#*#*
You can try to enable 3G only and see if you can keep a signal.
My signal is sometimes intermittent due to topography. Stupid flat Ohio. Haha

Thanks, it won't be that though because once I turn the phone off then back on it's there. Also once I turn W-Fi off and 3G doesn't kick in, then it won't do untill I restart. Also another reason why I know this isn't the case is because even when I do this at work 3G doesn't kick in and there is a Vodafone 3G mast on the roof
never seen this problem before, but it sounds like something that might have to be fixed by doing a full wipe and reflashing your ROM. i know its drastic, so maybe do a nand backup first. then flash and see if the problem remains. if its still there, than just go right back to your backup and no harm and nothing lost. worth a shot.

I'm on a stock Nexus One unrooted so I shouldn't have to Root to fix an Android problem. Never Rooted before but considering it.
I got the exact same problem with Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, can't remember if I had that issue with MIUI ROMs, but definitely with CyanogenMod ROMs.
Instead of rebooting the phone I suggest switching flight mode on/off it's faster than a full reboot
Haven't found any real solution yet and always thought I'm teh only one with that problem as I couldn't find any other person with that issue. Right now I'm testing different Radio/ROM combination and if that doesn't work I'll need to check if any app is causing the problem.
Any chance you are using Tasker?

[Q] My IncS completely disconnects, often!

First of all, let me start of what I've tried doing, in order.
New SIM-card, factory reset, unlock + root, custom ICS (VirtousQuattro).
None of the above solved my problem, it still persists! The problem is, the phone disconnects completely from the network (no bars) and I can't manually search for a new provider due "active package transmission" or something like that, it stays disconnected for 1-3 minutes and then reconnects. It happens fairly often, like once for every 5 times I try using the phone. I haven't noticed the problem when being connected to a WiFi, so I'd assume the problem is related to an issue between the phone and the network.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any idea how to solve it?
Have you tried flashing a new Radio? I can't see how that would differ from flashing a custom ROM, but might be worth a shot?

Yes Naforcee, I have exactly the same problem. And it never happens while using wifi as you said.
It started immediately after I updated to Sense 3 / Android 2.3.5 from HTC.

Don't think it's a physical problem, I have perfect connection and it just dies out for about 2 min until it reconnects, and I can't search for network when it's down due to active packet transfer..
Could try a new SIM card. Might not fix it, but worth a shot - I've seen this posted as a fix for other people.
I used to have this problem on certain radios on the Desire Z, after flashing around a bunch of radios to try all of them. Stuck with one and it went away, so it was software for me.

Try flashing this radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471861 using the ADB method. If that doesn't help I recommend doing a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM. There are a lot of different custom ROMs for IncS which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463
I personally like Niks ROM and Android Revolution HD.
Looks like rom installation issue.
My son's Inc-S having a similar problem to the OP, but more severe. A couple of weeks ago he entered airplane mode with all behaving normally, but since exiting airplane mode at the end of the flight he hasn't been able to register on the network (voice or data). We've tried:
fiddling with all the network settings
change sims (all sims work on my Inc2, none work on his IncS)
cleaning the antenna connections
reboot
factory reset
flashing new ROM (Android Revolution HD 2.3.0)
flashing new radio (3805.10.03.29_M)
So far, no satisfaction. We're still seeing no bars of reception (with an X) in the notification area, and don't have the option to manually or automatically register with any network operator (although several occasionally show up as options under "Search Networks"). We usually get the error message, "Unable to search for network while packet connection is active" when trying to select a network. Funny thing is, mobile network data has been shut off on his phone for the past month so the packet connection is definitely not active (wifi is on). Based on a network signal analyzer app, the phone is receiving the same mobile network signal as mine (-65 to -70 db) when they are side-by-side, so the problem does not appear to be in the antenna. The phone works just fine using wifi but is useless as a phone.
Any ideas about what to try next?

I tried restarting my phone and that got the GPS to turn on. But it wouldnt turn off itself whenever you exit an app like Maps or a GPS status app. The icon will continue to flash on the tool bar for a while and eventually turn of by itself. If you try to activate the GPS again you need to restart your phone.
Im not sure if this is a 4.4.2 problem or a unlocked/rooted problem. Ill try to revert my phone back to stock tonight

my gps doesnt have that problem..download an app called gps status, it shows how many satellites are in the field, then click on agps reset, then download then reboot..some people report this method fixes their gps, but doesnt fix mine ..keep me informed
I'm having the same issue lately after sending my phone to service to fix camera... My gps doesn't want to fix satellites. I tried reverting to stock (keeping s-off and unlocked bootloader) installed a guru reset rom and applied otas but no way till now. Last chance will be flashing a ruu, didn't have time yet but I'll do it in a couple days. I will keep you guys informed, if anyone succeeds in fixing it, please post how you did it!
Gps status sometimes sees satellites but signal is too low and never grows. I even tried tweaking gps.conf file a lot but no way...

Update: i tried with a RUU zip with android 4.1.2 and applied otas till 4.3 (that was the last one i received) on one of this upgrades camera was unable to launch but on the next one it came back. And no way to get gps working with any one of these upgrades. Gps status sees a number of satellites (weird thing, after every new flash glonass satellites appear with some sort of signal -- snr <= 1.18 --, until i reset gps data and download new agps files, then they never come back until i flash some other version/rom) but never gets an acceptable signal enough to lock..
Really don't know what else to try, i think i will send back to service..

2) I start driving and the blue arrow in google maps does not move OR it thinks im on a different road than I actually am. When it thinks im on a different road the arrow may or may not move...more often than not it just stays still.
3) I have driven for over 10min hoping it will eventually start to work but it doesn't.
4) The only way I have got it to work is to pull over, stop nav, close maps and try again. Generally on the 2nd or 3rd try it will start to work correctly.
My GPS was working fine before I rooted and installed a custom ROM. I will try wiping and flashing ViperOne tonight and use the stock firmware instead of ElementalX. Will report back to see if this works.

Nop no good still. If anyone has a fix for this it would be appreciated!!!
Same issues here after sending in for repair. GPS sees about 18-20 satellites per the gps status apps, but only fixes on 3-4 with weak signals. Tried a few gps.conf tweaks which help but seems that they're just using more of the AGPS data and not actually the GPS chip.
EDIT: Have tried a few fresh wipes and different ROMs, GPE edition, etc. - all the same. This never happened in the past :/

I have tried updating the firmware to the latest version and different ROMS but that did not help. However I discovered that in google maps if I select the walk mode my navigation will work! Unfortunately thats no help as I need the car mode to work.
I installed GPS Status and it locks on to plenty of satellites so im not sure why Google Maps (or any nav apps) will not work.
I came to the same conclusion as you. It seems like the phone is using AGPS and not the GPS data.

I did a little research the other day ...I can't find the link but I remember most of it..
Apparently one of the Google+ and/or playstore silent background updates mess up gps on google maps for HTC One.
Using the 'GPS essentials' and 'Gps status' apps you can actually lock on to all the gps satellites fine.
Also using navigation, like you did...also locks on fine.
Its the standard google maps over view and a few other apps that use it (like my bus map app) that are affected.
One work around is apparently (didn't work for me though) going into the google settings app and tinkering with Google+ settings. turning it off or clearing it or something.
This is a software issue. I'm on untampered pure stock.
So I have resolved the GPS issue on my device. I tried a whole bunch of things so im not totally sure what fixed it. I:
Removed HTC Backup using root uninstaller
Using Faster GPS set my location and added the TRUE flag to AGPS_Enable
Using GPSFix I waited until it locked onto a satellite.
Rebooted my phone then tested with GPS Test. My phone locked onto about 8 satellites.
Tried Google maps navigation and it worked.
So far its been 3 days, 2 reboots and counting. Hopefully something similar works for you.
If you're rooted editing the GPS.conf file fixes it perfectly. The default setting are just totally crap

And GPS has stopped working again. What a pain.
Go here. This is how I fixed my HTC one. It works on all android phones. The default GPS.conf file is rubbish
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630
I tried the gps.conf file in that link. It seemed to be slightly better at first, locking onto 3 satellites with yellow SNR in GPS Test. But then I tried resetting and downloading the AGPS data with GPS Status and after it doesn't even detect satellites anymore.
Question to the posters in the thread. Have any of you dropped your phone before this started happening? I've gone through 2 M7s and the GPS stopped working properly after taking a nasty spill and have been unsuccessful in remedying the problem.

I have dropped my phone several times however it is in a protective case. My issue started out of the blue: one day it was working just fine, the next it was highly erratic...and has been since.
