hello everyone
is there a way to remove the native gmail app from android 2.1 (nexus one)?
if you have a rooted phone,
just delete the Gmail.apk and GmailProvider.apk on the /system/app
make a backup of the applications before, in case...
No need for multiple threads in the same forum man.
If you delete the native app, you may lose contact syncing. You're better off handling gmail through the native app and not through exchange.
hi,
it seems the GmailProvider.apk is the sync application and Gmail.apk is the gmail email account manager application.
you can delete gmail.apk and install k9 or other...
thanks guys
hmm... i see. can I access the /system/apps without using a computer or terminal emulator?
just try "su file manager" from the market, but is for root users
sorry

hello everyone!
this may seem a bit strange but is there a way to remove the native gmail app from android 2.1 (nexus one)? since i use the native exchange email client, i am getting a lot of duplicate emails; really annoying!! i have root access. please help, thanks.
well its not what youre looking for but you can just apply a filter on gmail so it wont show up in your phones inbox. but i also dont think you can remove gmail :\
Or, unsync Gmail.
I would just like to keep it from starting up unless I start it. I dont use it but since there is no way that I have found to get the market to switch over to sending my reciept for paid apps to email accounts I actually use it has to remain accessible.
is there a way to link your Facebook contact with this phone like the HTC sense ui so that the contacts have a photo instead of a blank face?
I tried to facebook account login in settings already but no go.
Bump anybody know how?
here ya go bud. sorry bout the late response.
This is one solution i've found:
http://androidandme.com/2010/04/reviews/syncmypix-pulls-facebook-contact-photos-to-android/
you'll need a rooted phone, and a method to sideload apps which can be found in these forums. i recommend droid explorer.
Mine actually started working. From in the contacts u can also see the latest post
I can't add my facebook (Facebook for Androir installed and the phone is HTC Desire) to my accounts in phone contacts. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Just installed MildWild CM-3.7 ROM and phonebook is synced with gmail. I tried to took all syncin' off and then add the facebook to my contact accounts but it just doesn't do it. And it doesn't give any error message.
Edit: opps little old thread, but hope some1 could help me.

Calendars are now syncing per Feisty Noodles hack.. I want to say contacts is the last of the common phone gapps that needs to be ported to the NC...
Indeed. I wonder if the contacts apk from the one calendars were pulled from would be the first place to look

Calendar is over contacts, no question.. but I am tending to read/respond to emails if the tablet is nearby on it rather than the phone, and it'd be nice to have my contacts there so I can send new or CC people using it.
I've read that Touchdown will do the trick, but it's an expensive trick
I really want it for google voice sms
Tested the ContactsProvider.apk and Contacts.apk from the same rom package as the calendar apks but it was a no-go, the apk's wouldn't install. Going to try a couple other apks to see if I have any luck.
Did u try installing or just copying to system apps? I think you just copy

Tried both ways. Installing failed and copying to system/apps had no effect.
Posted from my ROOTED Barnes& Noble NookCOLOR
what happened when you copied? maybe it needs the accounts.xml modified to be synced like with the calendar?
I found a method of getting Contacts.apk actually working, but it won't sync with Google Contacts.
I was, however, able to export my Google Contacts to a file from the website and use the Contacts' app "import from SD" card.
It took a lot of trial and error, so I'm not sure how to replicate the steps it took me. I know I modified the /data/system/packages.xml to accept unsigned apps, and put the contacts and contactsprovider into /system/app/
Your mileage may vary.
Interesting, what are the steps u remember?
Sync Calendar at least
I'm using the "Synker" app to sync my calendar to google and its working real good for me, the only thing is you need to push a button on the widget to sync. Still alot simpler than all the other stuff I was trying

which GAPPS was this from?
The default rooted Email app worked great the first few days after rooting but now it just kicks me back to my email listing if I attempt to open any of the actual emails.
I installed Touchdown email as a test and it exhibit same behavor - Email shows up fine, syncs fine but when I tap an email to open it I'm right back to the emails listing again.
I've perused various forums with no success... Any ideas?

I had the same problem. So I copied over the email.apk, calendar.apk, and calendarprovers.apk from my Samsung moment 2.1 phone to the nook and it has been working.
Could you post a copy of your working Email.apk? I'm having the same problem with my exchange account and couldn't for the life of me get k9 mail to work.
Ended up getting a mostly working workaround by setting mail to check only every half hour and only saving 3 days worth of messages. My guess was that it had something to do with the fact that the default client downloads everything including large attachments.

You need to copy it over to the /system/app/ folder and make sure it has the same permissions of the other apks there. Then reboot. It should work. It wasn't ment to be installed manually

Worked great, I can now open emails. I wasn't aware that particular .apk's installed different ways. I'm assuming that's a "system app" type thing compared to "market" apps?
Thanks for your help!

Yep, system apps I guess are not signed with a certificate since they are system apps. All other apks have to be signed.
I would like to stop using the integrated Gmail application!
Is that possible.
I'm using, and its very nice, the Samsung application.
If I try to uninstall it tells me that it can uninstall only the updates.
The issue is that both Samsung and Gmail application have push notification and I get notified from both.
Thank you in advance
nobody?
I dont want to use any more the build in client Gmail.....
Have you tried going into Gmail ->Menu-> accounts and deleting yours? I guess that would stop it from notifying new mail.

Like dandon said DISABLE THE GMAIL SYNC in Accounts and Sync.
OR
Use System App Remover to remove Gmail. Do this at your own risk.
You should be rooted to use this app.

I have layer preinstalled, would the app remover get rid of it without affecting the phone normal operation.
Thanks

I don't think removing Layar should affect the system. No idea.
I've tried removing Adobe flash and everything's fine.
Layar can be removed safely. In fact, all apps that you can find on the Samsung Market can be removed. There's a slight issue with task manager though. If you press and hold the home button, a window appear with a task manager bar. Pressing that will result in an error. Nothing major that will affect normal phone usage though.
But NEVER remove Gtalk.
Guys...
the idea is to have the synchronization with the account of gmail(for contacts) but not to use the Gmail build in application.
After using the Samsung Email application for Gmail and Yahoo, I have now in the menu "Accounts and Sync" two accounts that I can sync.
My question is: how to remove the account only from the Gmail application and not from the Sync menu.
Thank you,
Contacts can be synced between phone and google via exchange active sync
