Hey, guys, I tried dong some research but I can't find anyone with a similar problem.
I've got a T-Mobile (USA) G1 and I've got Cyanogen's Eclair ROM flashed on it. Prior to flashing Cyanogen's ROM, I was using OpenEclair. OpenEclair was working [relatively] well until my phone randomly started shutting off. I thought it was a battery calibration problem, so I recalibrated my battery by letting it die completely and then charging it fully, but that didn't work. I flashed Cyanogen's Eclair and hoped that my problem would be fixed, but the problem still persists.
I can't really isolate the problem. My phone can shut off in the middle of a call, in the middle of writing a txt message, or without me even using it while it's in my pocket. It shuts off regardless of the battery level (I've seen it shut off at like 97%). This wouldn't be THAT bad except the phone refuses to turn on right after it shuts off. When I press the power button, the phone will show the G1 logo for a few seconds and then shut off again as if it was dead. Sometimes if I press the power button, the phone won't turn on and I'll see the LED flash red which gives me the idea that the phone "thinks" it's dead. In order for me to turn the phone back on, I need to plug in the charger. This is becoming extremely annoying.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I would try wiping/re-flashing but I don't wanna lose all my data :/
Thanks,
Gerard
I'm having the same exact problem ever since installing cyanogen 5.0.7 Test 1... so im not sure whats going on but i went to T-Mobile today... and they said my battery is warped or somethin not to tech savy... yet it was working fine like totally so... hmmm anyone know anything?
yea this has happened to me too! It shuts off randomly then i cant turn it back on until like 30 minutes later without touching it. I noticed that it happened after i flashed a open eclair rom that wouldnt start but i did flash it correctly. I have wiped battery stats and dalvik cache. Well i hope we can get some answers
I had the same problem I have tried just about every rom out there so dont remember when it started but i ordered a new battery off ebay for 10 bucks and havent had a problem since

So you think it's a hardware problem? I find it kinda hard to believe that all of us coincidentally got this problem after installing Ecalir ROMs...unless Eclair destroys our battery somehow?
:/
yeah same here but mine started with Amon Ra 1.2.3 and the blue haze rom. I updated my recovery to the latest 1.6.2 I think and switched to htcclay's superfast and the danger spl slso tmobile is comping me a new battery just to be safe, although switching rom's seem's to have helped my battery life a little. hope this helps someone.
Have you tried replacing the battery?

Nah, I'm part lazy and part unconvinced that it's a hardware issue. I mean if the phone reads that the battery is like 95% charged, why would it just give out randomly? I don't know much about hardware though, so maybe I'm wrong...
I want T-Mobile to get a new Android phone that's like incredible I want a new phone already damnit!!
im just gonna buy a battery on ebay or something because my battery does look kinda swollen so it could possibly be the battery. Gonna give it a try though

You think you could update us when you find out whether it changes anything or not? :/
This phone gets me really frustrated because first it started shutting off and now i have a unresponsive lock screen! I push all the buttons and the screen is black like if its turned off. I have to do a battery pull but theres a risk of the phone not turning back on and shutting off on the g1 screen. I was planning to buy the battery today but i think im just going to use a different phone for now. I hope someone can really resolve this problem. Cant wait for the samsung galaxy s
For what it's worth, I started having the same issue last week with my G1. I think it's entirely coincidental that you switched to the CM 2.1 Test branch and your phone started getting screwy.
I looked at my battery as the first suspect, and what did I find when I pulled it out of the case? A badly swolen battery. By the end of the week, the swelling had gotten so bad that it was visibly bulging the plastic backing on my G1.
I took it to 3 separate T-Mobile stores looking for a replacement battery. The first two were of no luck, but the 3rd finally had one in stock. The CSR saw my battery and almost freaked out. She says I was lucky that it didn't pop because it was ready to at just about any moment.
Long story short, since replacing my battery, I have had ZERO issues, and my battery life has once again been phenomenal (well, for the G1).
I just checked my battery and I think it's possible that it's swollen. On the side where it says "htc Innovation," is it supposed to be perfectly flat? There's like a rectangle that's slightly raised above the rest of surface. I'm a little hesitant to buy a $50 battery if that's the way the battery is supposed to be.
Thanks,
Gerard
Spontaneous power off - sunspots?
Yes, this happened to me fairly frequently about 3 months ago. Now it happens (maybe) once a week.
In my experience, it isn't a Cyanogen issue - it would spontaneous die when I used Enomther's official rom, SuperD (one of the previous versions), and some others. That made me think it was hardware, but ... I haven't changed hardware, and still drop the G1 into my pocket like usual.
So if it isn't ROM software and it isn't hardware, what is it - sunspots?

It should be perfectly flat. A new, good battery does not have the bulging rectangle in the middle you are talking about. Mine did the same thing. In fact, both sides were swelling. The battery would no longer sit flush in the back. My theory was simply that some sort of movement was causing it to lose contact and shutting off the phone.
If you take the battery out and lay it flat the table, you shouldn't be able to rock it by pressing an edge. If you can, your battery is dying.
I just bought a battery yesterday on amazon for 15$ You should check it out. Hope this battery resolves my problem. I also fixed my lock screen issue. I had set cpu to 120 instead of 128 so it unresponsive.
I have the same problem, and indeed when i now look at it my battery seems a bit swollen. I ordered a replacement battery on dealextreme. They have a few different battery replacements for the G1 for cheap (and lots of other things, regular customer) with free shipping. So i hope that will fix my problem .
I found this thread because I've been having random shutoffs as if the battery were pulled (black screen immediately, no "Shutting Down" prompt first), and it would only do this when NOT charging. This started happening when I first ran Firerat's all-in-one script but I think it was coincidental. So anyways, I found this thread after wanting to pull my hair out because of the random shutoffs, and sure enough, I pulled my battery and it's a bit puffed out. Time for a new battery.
My question is : does anyone think this is a result of the extra strain placed on the battery / heat generated from being overclocked? Once I get a new battery, I'd like to prevent it from happening in the future.
definately a battery problem. had the same thing on my g1. got into a whole big argument about how it WAS NOT PHONE in the cyanogen6 thread. guess what....it was my phone.
its not the rom. its your phone. seriously.
also, just to point out, most of us here got our phones relatively early in its release, and lot of people are having this problem now apparently. battery has life of 2yrs by my calculations.
if you can mimic a reboot with the phone plugged into usb or wall charger...it may be rom. but if you phone DOES NOT DIE while PLUGGED IN...ITS YOUR BATTERY.
Had the same problem with my 2008 bought g1, swollen battery and random shutdowns. Just inserted an new bought battery. Hope it fixes the problem.

Hi,
I have now had 2 occasions where my LG OX2 were automatically shut!!
I took it of the charger this morning, screen brightened, all normal. After 5 min. when I needed it, the phone was off. Later I had one more like this. Got to work and after some hours it was off when I needed it! I really don't get it. Battery was full.
I am on 2.2.2, rootet.
Has anyone had same experince??
I had that issue aswell.
Had that aswell yesterday morning, had to take the batteri out and put it back in, to get it back on
Same here.
Hi guys. Thanks for your answers. This is indeed very strange. This could be something that I will not accept for a smartphone this price. I will contact LG.
Are yours also rootet and have you removed anything?
Cheers.
Rooted. Not removed anything at all.
You mentioned that you have rooted the phone, did you freeze any applications?
Same here.
Only happened once and it was plugged into a charger (and would have been at 100%).
Battery pull was the only thing that worked.
I'll add this thread to the bugs thread.
Have not happend to me yet. I have used it for 1 day now. And 3 charges. No problems.
Rooted and deleted some apps.

Nope.

So it seems to happens just on the rooted phones. Maybe the root its not stable yet?
No, i have not yet roted and i had the same problem yesterday. Nothing so far today though.
Optimus S ... same problem!
It seems like Optimus S have the same problem
Here a link :

Mine is not rooted, I had around 54% battery when I left work. Phone rebooted two times during the 15min walk home, once during a call and once when all I was doing was swiping around the homescreens... :/
My o2x rebooted once today, with 50% battery left.. Edit: Mine is also rooted and I have frozen the car home app.
This is very distressing. Being that this problem affects the 2x, rooted or not, then it is def. a hardware issue. Possibly solely a battery issue, or the design to which where the battery is housed (connectors), or simply power hit/miss circuitry design. My advice is, if it occurs enough not to annoy you (meaning, you don't want to deal w/ a return/exchange & don't mind the re-booting) then keep it. I believe that no software patch can fix this & for such an expensive device, I would return it for a fresh unit.

I did withnis this twice yesterday.
The phone doesn't shut down. It is a huge lag.
It happend the 3th time. I didn't pull out the battery, after 20sec that I pressed the power button for the screen to light up, the screen showed.
So it is lagg.
Not rooted. And to make it clear i'm talking about the phone screen not turning on, so you have to pull out battery and power it on again. No reboot.
What?! 20s lag? I was looking forward for quick device since I switch my Rhodium for LGO2X. I hope that this would be fixed soon by LG...
How odd. I haven't experienced this at all, and i've rooted mine and removed apps like F-Secure from my phone (By renaming them, don't worry.)
I guess a good way to find out if it's lag is to see if adb is still working.
Had it yesterday myself, once during charging. Then the powerbutton did work. Hour later I had to pull the battery. Wanted to advanced but forgot to leave USB debugging on. Had it so far only with my replaced unit. The first few days with the original unit didn't show signs of this...
Have to say my first unit wasn't rooted until the day they swapped it. The one I have now has been rooted since day one.

Having a bit of trouble with my tab. It's taken to turning itself off. Usually in the middle of me performing a task. It's happened on while using Facebook, Instant messaging, Picture editing, and browsing the web. (the only trend I've managed to spot is that it only seems to happen while the tab is in use)
Battery is fine, 74%. No warning, just all of a sudden its off.
Its a UK Galaxy Tab, it was running "Overcome_v2.0.0_RC1_Full" as this problem seemed to be persistent I decided to restock and flash to 001003-Overcome_v3.0.1_JUPITER_Wipe. Hoped that would sort the problem, but it's happened twice since yesterday.
Doesnit seem to be the usual shutdown, no animation, no sound, no vibrate. It just dies.
I've tried tapping around to power button and on it (wondering there was some kind of problem with the button but it seems fine)
Has anyone had the same problem? Or better yet a solution?
It's a battery problem. As in physical battery problem. I just had it replaced by Samsung yesterday. Exact same symptoms.
Sent from my Overcome-Powered Tab!
Ahh, not what I was hoping to hear. So the only course is to contact samsung? Is it an expensive thing to have fixed?
This will require restocking before sending it off to them?
The strange thing is that I've never experienced say... putting the tab to sleep, or walking away and leaving it, and having the same issue. It only ever seems to happen while in use.
Thanks for your help mate.
Www.tvc-mall.com sells a lot of tab parts, and replacing the battery is fairly easy, but if you are under a warranty, better to let them do it.
I'm thinking you don't have to revert to stock, because the rom didn't cause the battery - it's a known defect. But it only takes 10 minutes to go to stock.

It'll just get worst. I tested it thoroughly. Went back to froyo, Overcome 1.x (Froyo-based), stock gingerbread, etc. just to rule out software. It was still there.
Well, to be honest, i had the same fear too. Though my unit is still under warranty, and officially, in MY, the warranty for the battery is for six months only according to their website. But when I went to the service center, the replaced it, no questions asked. And judging by their behaviour, seems like it's a known issue.
I just did my usual backups, flashed back to a stock rom, passed it to them, and within an hour, it's back in my hands. Not one cent spent.

Well, if you're sending back to the official service channels, best to get back to stock. Like insurance companies, they'll try to find any excuse to invalidate warranty if they can, so let's not give them any reason to do so.
And it only takes a few minutes.

Ok I've been reading up a bit - before the last resort of having to send my tab back to Samsung- is there any chance re-calibrating the battery could work?
The trouble could be inaccurate measurement of the battery. Tab just dropped from 60% to 1% (pop up warning) in about 20 minutes. I rebooted the tab, and the battery now shows 34%
I do have a terrible habit of not letting my tab fully discharge, before recharging. Infact my tab spends most of it's time plugged into the mains.
I dont think its a battery problem. I have same problem with Overcome Jupiter no wipe edition. Before that(overcme) I was using gingerbread from official italain firmware and there was no problem at all. but now I am having problem. It get stuck while performing task and restart (sometime remains off and I have to restart) . its like everyday now. and yesterday it was off when it was not doing anything. this might create problem for me.
dont know what to do. Overcome Jupiter is great Rom so i dont want to switch to other so may be there might be some solutions.
Any suggestions?

Well, as I've said, mine had the exact same symptoms, which includes random shut-downs, battery suddenly dropping down to low percentages.
So, you can either do these few things which I've already done:
1) Recalibrate your battery, if it still persists after this, then
2) Try going to a stock ROM and see. In my case, I've tested if over the span of one week with the following (Stock Gingerbread, the rock-solid Overcome 1.6.4 (Froyo-based), with battery calibration... with minimal apps.
In my case, it still persisted - thus eliminating software issues. So definitely a battery problem. As I said, I just flashed the stock JPE (since I'm in Malaysia) and just went to the Samsung Service Center. A quick description of the problem... and the staff said they'll change the battery, no questions asked.
@Bikrame... issues with a lithium battery can crop up all of a sudden, especially when it's nearing End Of Life. In theory, a good quality battery should last a few thousand charge cycles, or at least a year depending on usage. However, there's been quite a few reports about the quality of the Tab's battery before hand, so it's up to you. If you think it's a Jupiter/Overcome problem... hey, I leave it to you to decide for yourself.
Now I'm rocking a new battery, 7 months after I bought my Tab, so I'm not complaining, with an 8 hour heavy/continuous usage... on my first charge cycle and now about 30% after a 14-hour mixed usage run on my second charge.
Moral of the story: it's your own call. If you'd like to think it's not a battery issue... ;-)
Well in my case the issue was there a couple of days before installing Jupiter.
I knew I was upgrading so went on a bit of an app install spree, noticed a massive decline in battery use. The random reboots started. Then I upgraded.
Thing is, the battery monitor in the taskbar has always been a bit dodgy... reporting higher than it is. Then a sudden drop. I'm going to recalibrate the battery and see how I get on from there.
Nearest samsung center to me is miles away, and in the UK I cant see them just switching the battery out. This kind of thing usually takes 2 weeks - a month.
thanks for the help though guys
Try removing batterystats.bin or check the governor if your rooted.

Well yes I'm going to try a different battery soon but the odd thing is after my battery charge seems to drop down to 5% or so, it starts charging to about its original charge level without a charger connected. So it's basically 80%->drop to 5%->charge back to 60% without charger.
i'll try now to do a hard reset, go back to stock rom, then reinstall an costum rom,
will tell you if it works!

i have used TeamWin Recovery for wipe all partition becouse with hard reset don't wipe /system and internal sd.

I thought I was the only one with this problem. I charge my battery to full and it starts draining normally. Then, when around 30-80% battery remaining, it turns off. It only turns off when you use it for a while, when the screen is off it stays on normally. After rebooting it turns off within a minute or so. This continues for a few reboots with the battery level remaining roughly the same. Eventually after a few boots it shows 3-4% of battery, after which I of course have to charge. Also tried calibrating and tried different roms but it still remains. I ALSO SWAPPED MY BATTERY WITH A FRIEND BUT IT DIDN'T HELP! It worked like a charm for him but I still got turn offs with his battery.
If i were you Guys, i would install stock rom and hand in my phone under warranty ( of course if you still have it ). Because if this occurs even when u swap battery, let samsung play with you phone then
Its not your battery..restore your phone to the way it was and give it to samsung
i'm getting pissed of now, even with the stock rom it randomly shutsdown.
i don't have any warrenty so i can't give it back to samsung
In case anyone's still wondering, in my case it did turn out to be a fried battery. If anyone else is experiencing the same issues I was, just check your battery to see whether or not it is swollen. If it's bigger than it should be, that probably means it's fried and you should replace it. I'm happily running custom roms without any trouble again now, and battery life is awesome!

Hi guys,
I also have this problem, my phone randomly turns off and when I turn it on, it shows much less remaining battery percentage than before. (please see attached image) After turning on the value is increasing, sometimes from ~5% to 30-40% or more...
Now I have CM10 Jelly Bean flashed, but CM9 did the same sometimes but much more rarely than on JB. Today the phone 'died' three times until noon.

Yeah that's the exact same problem I had. In my case it turned out to be a fried battery, see if it's swollen or not, if you lay your battery on a table it should stay still and not wobble around. If the battery's not flat but swollen that means your battery is fried. In this case good news because you can easily replace it

besides this I put out the battery now and put it back and it is showing only 2% percent of battery so maybe my battery is wrong

Anyone else having extreme battery drain issues?
Just started out of nowhere. I woke up, checked my phone as usual.. it was cool when I picked it up, but after 5 minutes on it, it started getting hot.
Battery is draining 20-30 in 15 minutes.. I've wiped the phone and installed a fresh ROM, both AOSP, and Sense-based. If I take it off the charger it will drain and die. I've had this happen to a previous HTC One.
Does anyone have any ideas?
It doesn't make much sense to me.. if I wipe the phone, and all it has is a bootloader and recovery, what could the problem be? I wipe the phone and turn it off, and it still gets hotter and hotter. I'm barely keeping it alive on the charger.. I can manage flashing a ROM, et.c. but if I leave anywhere with my phone and use it.. it will be dead in an hour I feel. Then it will be a brick.
Anyone?
I've tried the PWR Volume +/- too..

Batterycell problem, assuming you've always used the original charger that came with the phone?
Anyways it sounds like a warranty issue. I would return the software to stock and deliver it back saying it's always been like this. You should get a new.
Whatever you do, turn it off at night. Assuming the cells are unstable, it may actually overheat and explode. I wouldn't want to be asleep at that time if I were you...

Ugh.. this is already my 4th One in 3 months. Tired of this problem.
I'm probably going to request a different model of phone. Too many problems here.
Thanks...
Feel for you bro... I've fortunately never had any problems with mine, nor have my friends with their One's.
Well, sounds pretty bad, sorry for you
But i would sent it back (again) and make some pressure and tell them you want a fully functionally phone already! I dont know what i would do, i'm fine with mine ('knocking on the table*) but if had such issues and already had THREE phones because of issues i would go enrage lol.
Have had issues with a new laptop the first one had heating problems with graphic processor, so i sent it back, made some pressure and got a new one which is fine now
What i will say, always make a little pressure and don't say "okay" to everything you will get
Hello,
Been a while since i was on XDA because i chose a good enough rom and never had to back again. I've used android for quite a while. My first android phone ever was a HTC Tattoo. This is like my 7th android phone now and i've modded every phone i ever had with a custom rom because the stock ones were full of stupid additions that just took up space for no reason. I've encountered many issues along the way and solved most of em. But here is another issue i just cannot fix no matter how hard i try.
I have a regular Xperia Z1 c6903 and i've used it for quite a while. Played Hearthstone alot on it even tho it did make the phone feel like a radiator. After time, the back glass started loosening up bit by bit. I think it has something to do with the glue loosening because of the constant heat of me playing Hearthstone. Didn't worry about it too much, until i started having these weird battery issues. The phone started dying on weird percentages, jumping from 14% to instant 0% and shutdown. I've encountered this issue before on other phones and it just happened to be a software issue where reinstalling the rom or installing another would fix the issue.
I tried this on this phone multiple times. Worked once. Then it came back. Tried even installing the stock firmware again so its in factory settings even tho i didnt relock the bootloader. Issue didnt get fixed. Tried switching to a kitkat stock firmware, didnt work. Tried installing another custom firmware, didnt work. So i reverted back to the rom that i found worked best for me despite the battery issues, DStrikerZ1 Kai.
The issue just got worse. It started dying on 30% and just went higher and higher each time. Then it kept dying on like 64% or so each time. At this point, every time i charged it it just jumped from 1% to like 54% in less than a minute. I charged it each time while it was off. I didnt turn it on to then charge it.
2 days ago, it died on exactly 84%. It's at this point i was looking into options because i cant have a phone that charges only to what it THINKS it 100% and then stops charging to just die then at 84% while discharging per percentage at a normal rate.
Next day, the battery and the back glass i ordered arrived. There was one issue tho which i realized much later, the battery i got was too fat. Mostly on the lower part of it. I was able to plug the battery in but i couldnt put on the back glass entirely because the battery is too fat. So i put it on as much as i could and just taped it around with white tape around the phone but above and below the screen so it doesnt block it. Also cut out what was needed with a scalpel so sound and camera arent blocked. While trying to replace the battery, i think i may have accidentally pulled a little bit on the back camera so it popped out just a tiny bit. Pushed it back in and it looks fine. Although now i can't launch my camera app and it crashes each time. Dont use it much anyway so not a big loss for me.
Here is the result of this new battery:
It works. Although i still have the battery percentage issues. But it charges a bit differently now and discharges differently. NOT CORRECTLY STILL. 1 hour ago i put on charging because it died outside again at a wrong percentage. Was like 60%, dont remember. I turn it on again and while its turning itself on, i plug it into the charger. It says 52%. So i launch Pokemon GO and run it for about a minute. Then it dies again. Then i turn it on again and NOW its on 1% and it starts charging what i THINK is normally. 20 minutes later after charging, i check it and its on 11%. Then the really weird thing happens. As im watching the percentage go up, it goes from 11% to 15% in a matter of seconds as if it went up by 1% per second. It's been 1 hour now and its on 27%. One thing that i think is just a coincidence but i have no idea, it died like 6 times only while Pokemon GO was running.
I seriously don't know what to do. I don't know if the issue isnt with the battery but the phone itself, or if it just needs a bit calibration. But you can't use a phone reliably if you cant know when it needs recharging. I can't buy a new phone for at least 2 more months. I have a Galaxy S2 somewhere that i can use in the meantime but its cracked a bit and the top left part of the glass just above the display is just gone. Taped over it to keep it covered. But it'll get the job done in the meantime.
I know i should have made a book about this. I did write alot. But i feel people will be able the help me if they know exactly every detail.
What does the community of XDA have to say about what i should do or try?
Thank you in advance!
Sounds like you got a damaged or used battery that is bad. It has dead cells in it thus the voltage and percent drop. Besides that original Sony 3000mAh battery will fit perfectly and look exactly like replaced original battery (bar it can have different text/icon layout on white sticker).

The one i got by mail actually is also the original Sony 3000mAh battery. I did the comparison and it does look exactly the same with only the sticker being a tiny bit different in what exact code it had on it. But this one was thicker on the bottom part of the battery. I'll just order another one then i guess...

But if it is thicker then it is a used one that has swollen cells in it due to dendrite which makes cells go bad and ultimately shortcut the cell(s) resulting in sudden drops in voltage thus the percentage jumps down or goes directly to 0 depeding on severity.
Return the battery and get a new one and make sure it is original. When you get it weight it and compare with the old one. IIRC battery should weight about 42-43 grams. On the sticker you see 2 numbers with a W inbetween. First is year it is produced and second is the week eg 13W32 which means 2013, week 32.
I suggest you order from Teknikdelar.se (since you live in Sweden) which has original Sony batteries and they are new, fresh ones. Avoid anyone selling batteries without "original Sony" inserted into description.

This actually now makes a whole lot sense. It is kind of swollen as if its been used up. I will order a new one as soon as i can from the website you linked. Appreciate the help! :victory:
