Having a bit of trouble with my tab. It's taken to turning itself off. Usually in the middle of me performing a task. It's happened on while using Facebook, Instant messaging, Picture editing, and browsing the web. (the only trend I've managed to spot is that it only seems to happen while the tab is in use)
Battery is fine, 74%. No warning, just all of a sudden its off.
Its a UK Galaxy Tab, it was running "Overcome_v2.0.0_RC1_Full" as this problem seemed to be persistent I decided to restock and flash to 001003-Overcome_v3.0.1_JUPITER_Wipe. Hoped that would sort the problem, but it's happened twice since yesterday.
Doesnit seem to be the usual shutdown, no animation, no sound, no vibrate. It just dies.
I've tried tapping around to power button and on it (wondering there was some kind of problem with the button but it seems fine)
Has anyone had the same problem? Or better yet a solution?
It's a battery problem. As in physical battery problem. I just had it replaced by Samsung yesterday. Exact same symptoms.
Sent from my Overcome-Powered Tab!
Ahh, not what I was hoping to hear. So the only course is to contact samsung? Is it an expensive thing to have fixed?
This will require restocking before sending it off to them?
The strange thing is that I've never experienced say... putting the tab to sleep, or walking away and leaving it, and having the same issue. It only ever seems to happen while in use.
Thanks for your help mate.
Www.tvc-mall.com sells a lot of tab parts, and replacing the battery is fairly easy, but if you are under a warranty, better to let them do it.
I'm thinking you don't have to revert to stock, because the rom didn't cause the battery - it's a known defect. But it only takes 10 minutes to go to stock.

It'll just get worst. I tested it thoroughly. Went back to froyo, Overcome 1.x (Froyo-based), stock gingerbread, etc. just to rule out software. It was still there.
Well, to be honest, i had the same fear too. Though my unit is still under warranty, and officially, in MY, the warranty for the battery is for six months only according to their website. But when I went to the service center, the replaced it, no questions asked. And judging by their behaviour, seems like it's a known issue.
I just did my usual backups, flashed back to a stock rom, passed it to them, and within an hour, it's back in my hands. Not one cent spent.

Well, if you're sending back to the official service channels, best to get back to stock. Like insurance companies, they'll try to find any excuse to invalidate warranty if they can, so let's not give them any reason to do so.
And it only takes a few minutes.

Ok I've been reading up a bit - before the last resort of having to send my tab back to Samsung- is there any chance re-calibrating the battery could work?
The trouble could be inaccurate measurement of the battery. Tab just dropped from 60% to 1% (pop up warning) in about 20 minutes. I rebooted the tab, and the battery now shows 34%
I do have a terrible habit of not letting my tab fully discharge, before recharging. Infact my tab spends most of it's time plugged into the mains.
I dont think its a battery problem. I have same problem with Overcome Jupiter no wipe edition. Before that(overcme) I was using gingerbread from official italain firmware and there was no problem at all. but now I am having problem. It get stuck while performing task and restart (sometime remains off and I have to restart) . its like everyday now. and yesterday it was off when it was not doing anything. this might create problem for me.
dont know what to do. Overcome Jupiter is great Rom so i dont want to switch to other so may be there might be some solutions.
Any suggestions?

Well, as I've said, mine had the exact same symptoms, which includes random shut-downs, battery suddenly dropping down to low percentages.
So, you can either do these few things which I've already done:
1) Recalibrate your battery, if it still persists after this, then
2) Try going to a stock ROM and see. In my case, I've tested if over the span of one week with the following (Stock Gingerbread, the rock-solid Overcome 1.6.4 (Froyo-based), with battery calibration... with minimal apps.
In my case, it still persisted - thus eliminating software issues. So definitely a battery problem. As I said, I just flashed the stock JPE (since I'm in Malaysia) and just went to the Samsung Service Center. A quick description of the problem... and the staff said they'll change the battery, no questions asked.
@Bikrame... issues with a lithium battery can crop up all of a sudden, especially when it's nearing End Of Life. In theory, a good quality battery should last a few thousand charge cycles, or at least a year depending on usage. However, there's been quite a few reports about the quality of the Tab's battery before hand, so it's up to you. If you think it's a Jupiter/Overcome problem... hey, I leave it to you to decide for yourself.
Now I'm rocking a new battery, 7 months after I bought my Tab, so I'm not complaining, with an 8 hour heavy/continuous usage... on my first charge cycle and now about 30% after a 14-hour mixed usage run on my second charge.
Moral of the story: it's your own call. If you'd like to think it's not a battery issue... ;-)
Well in my case the issue was there a couple of days before installing Jupiter.
I knew I was upgrading so went on a bit of an app install spree, noticed a massive decline in battery use. The random reboots started. Then I upgraded.
Thing is, the battery monitor in the taskbar has always been a bit dodgy... reporting higher than it is. Then a sudden drop. I'm going to recalibrate the battery and see how I get on from there.
Nearest samsung center to me is miles away, and in the UK I cant see them just switching the battery out. This kind of thing usually takes 2 weeks - a month.
thanks for the help though guys
Try removing batterystats.bin or check the governor if your rooted.

Hey, guys, I tried dong some research but I can't find anyone with a similar problem.
I've got a T-Mobile (USA) G1 and I've got Cyanogen's Eclair ROM flashed on it. Prior to flashing Cyanogen's ROM, I was using OpenEclair. OpenEclair was working [relatively] well until my phone randomly started shutting off. I thought it was a battery calibration problem, so I recalibrated my battery by letting it die completely and then charging it fully, but that didn't work. I flashed Cyanogen's Eclair and hoped that my problem would be fixed, but the problem still persists.
I can't really isolate the problem. My phone can shut off in the middle of a call, in the middle of writing a txt message, or without me even using it while it's in my pocket. It shuts off regardless of the battery level (I've seen it shut off at like 97%). This wouldn't be THAT bad except the phone refuses to turn on right after it shuts off. When I press the power button, the phone will show the G1 logo for a few seconds and then shut off again as if it was dead. Sometimes if I press the power button, the phone won't turn on and I'll see the LED flash red which gives me the idea that the phone "thinks" it's dead. In order for me to turn the phone back on, I need to plug in the charger. This is becoming extremely annoying.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I would try wiping/re-flashing but I don't wanna lose all my data :/
Thanks,
Gerard
I'm having the same exact problem ever since installing cyanogen 5.0.7 Test 1... so im not sure whats going on but i went to T-Mobile today... and they said my battery is warped or somethin not to tech savy... yet it was working fine like totally so... hmmm anyone know anything?
yea this has happened to me too! It shuts off randomly then i cant turn it back on until like 30 minutes later without touching it. I noticed that it happened after i flashed a open eclair rom that wouldnt start but i did flash it correctly. I have wiped battery stats and dalvik cache. Well i hope we can get some answers

So you think it's a hardware problem? I find it kinda hard to believe that all of us coincidentally got this problem after installing Ecalir ROMs...unless Eclair destroys our battery somehow?
:/
yeah same here but mine started with Amon Ra 1.2.3 and the blue haze rom. I updated my recovery to the latest 1.6.2 I think and switched to htcclay's superfast and the danger spl slso tmobile is comping me a new battery just to be safe, although switching rom's seem's to have helped my battery life a little. hope this helps someone.

Nah, I'm part lazy and part unconvinced that it's a hardware issue. I mean if the phone reads that the battery is like 95% charged, why would it just give out randomly? I don't know much about hardware though, so maybe I'm wrong...
I want T-Mobile to get a new Android phone that's like incredible I want a new phone already damnit!!
im just gonna buy a battery on ebay or something because my battery does look kinda swollen so it could possibly be the battery. Gonna give it a try though

You think you could update us when you find out whether it changes anything or not? :/
This phone gets me really frustrated because first it started shutting off and now i have a unresponsive lock screen! I push all the buttons and the screen is black like if its turned off. I have to do a battery pull but theres a risk of the phone not turning back on and shutting off on the g1 screen. I was planning to buy the battery today but i think im just going to use a different phone for now. I hope someone can really resolve this problem. Cant wait for the samsung galaxy s
For what it's worth, I started having the same issue last week with my G1. I think it's entirely coincidental that you switched to the CM 2.1 Test branch and your phone started getting screwy.
I looked at my battery as the first suspect, and what did I find when I pulled it out of the case? A badly swolen battery. By the end of the week, the swelling had gotten so bad that it was visibly bulging the plastic backing on my G1.
I took it to 3 separate T-Mobile stores looking for a replacement battery. The first two were of no luck, but the 3rd finally had one in stock. The CSR saw my battery and almost freaked out. She says I was lucky that it didn't pop because it was ready to at just about any moment.
Long story short, since replacing my battery, I have had ZERO issues, and my battery life has once again been phenomenal (well, for the G1).
I just checked my battery and I think it's possible that it's swollen. On the side where it says "htc Innovation," is it supposed to be perfectly flat? There's like a rectangle that's slightly raised above the rest of surface. I'm a little hesitant to buy a $50 battery if that's the way the battery is supposed to be.
Thanks,
Gerard
Spontaneous power off - sunspots?
Yes, this happened to me fairly frequently about 3 months ago. Now it happens (maybe) once a week.
In my experience, it isn't a Cyanogen issue - it would spontaneous die when I used Enomther's official rom, SuperD (one of the previous versions), and some others. That made me think it was hardware, but ... I haven't changed hardware, and still drop the G1 into my pocket like usual.
So if it isn't ROM software and it isn't hardware, what is it - sunspots?

It should be perfectly flat. A new, good battery does not have the bulging rectangle in the middle you are talking about. Mine did the same thing. In fact, both sides were swelling. The battery would no longer sit flush in the back. My theory was simply that some sort of movement was causing it to lose contact and shutting off the phone.
If you take the battery out and lay it flat the table, you shouldn't be able to rock it by pressing an edge. If you can, your battery is dying.
I just bought a battery yesterday on amazon for 15$ You should check it out. Hope this battery resolves my problem. I also fixed my lock screen issue. I had set cpu to 120 instead of 128 so it unresponsive.
I have the same problem, and indeed when i now look at it my battery seems a bit swollen. I ordered a replacement battery on dealextreme. They have a few different battery replacements for the G1 for cheap (and lots of other things, regular customer) with free shipping. So i hope that will fix my problem .
I found this thread because I've been having random shutoffs as if the battery were pulled (black screen immediately, no "Shutting Down" prompt first), and it would only do this when NOT charging. This started happening when I first ran Firerat's all-in-one script but I think it was coincidental. So anyways, I found this thread after wanting to pull my hair out because of the random shutoffs, and sure enough, I pulled my battery and it's a bit puffed out. Time for a new battery.
My question is : does anyone think this is a result of the extra strain placed on the battery / heat generated from being overclocked? Once I get a new battery, I'd like to prevent it from happening in the future.
definately a battery problem. had the same thing on my g1. got into a whole big argument about how it WAS NOT PHONE in the cyanogen6 thread. guess what....it was my phone.
its not the rom. its your phone. seriously.
also, just to point out, most of us here got our phones relatively early in its release, and lot of people are having this problem now apparently. battery has life of 2yrs by my calculations.
if you can mimic a reboot with the phone plugged into usb or wall charger...it may be rom. but if you phone DOES NOT DIE while PLUGGED IN...ITS YOUR BATTERY.
Had the same problem with my 2008 bought g1, swollen battery and random shutdowns. Just inserted an new bought battery. Hope it fixes the problem.

2. How can I check to confirm it is the battery and not the charger/phone.

I think the phone possibly has a hardware fault.
It strange, because if I take the simm out the phone keeps alomost full charge for the whole day!!
Not sure if its worth fixing.

May be you can check what all kind of networks are working/used when SIM is in? Also make the network selection Manual instead of AUTO and see the difference.

I will try the network selection suggestion.

Network selection is already set to Manual.
I noticed something very STRANGE today.
I thought it maybe due to the signal in the new house we moved to, so I took the phone to work. Made one call and it went dead. Tried to start the phone, but battery to weak.
I took the sim out. started the phone without the sim and HEY PRESTO, battery is 75% full!!
Any ideas whats going on??
You should really flash it first, and if it fails you have a faulty phone. But flash it with HTC stock Rom, because you will lose waranty if you use anything else.
Its out of warranty. (My wife uses this phone now)
Would a FACTORY reset achieve the same as flashing with a HTC stock rom??
regards
FIXED.
The battery was faulty.
Apparently is had developed a slight "buldge" in the middle. Probably due to over heating.
Bought a new battery and all seems well.
£8 battery saved me buying a wildfire S for the wife.
Hi,
A few days ago I upgraded my Note from a very ancient (stock) Gingerbread ROM to (stock) Jellybean. I hadn't been getting OTA updates because the Gingerbread was originally German rather than UK, so quite a long time had passed without any updates. Anyway, because of the no OTA, I used Odin. Everything went fine and I had a nice few days of usage, although the battery consumption seemed to suddenly be quite high, mainly due to additional wakelocks from the new Google Search it looked like. The night before last at about 3% the phone turned itself off, which is unusual as normally the battery will run itself lower than that. BTW, it's an official battery bought just a few months ago to replace the one before, which was getting old.
Yesterday evening when I went to use the phone it was dead. Completely unresponsive. It wouldn't charge either. (The battery had been at about fourteen percent I think, so it should have still had a lot of juice left.) Turning it on would leave it stuck on the Samsung logo only. Recovery mode didn't work, but I could get download mode up, so I installed the Philz kernel as people have said, and then did a reset using that, and all was okay again and after reflashing the ROM I could use the phone again, although because of the reset I had to set everything up again.
Just wondering what people think caused it. Just a weird coincidence, or something else? As far as I'm concerned, the problem has been sort of mitigated for now, but definitely not fixed, because what's to stop it happening again? Has anyone heard of strange things going on with Jellybean? I know there's an issue with flashing/resetting from ICS, but I never used that so I don't think that's an issue, and it looks like it was just a soft brick only. Still, a bit weird and worrying. Does anyone have any ideas?
That was caused by an unexpected shutdown of your phone - if you remove the battery without it fully turning off then you will get it and yeah, blame samsung.
The only way not to have it again is to flash philz kernel with the bootloop fix BEFORE you get the bootloop. Alternativly, if you get it again then you can try what is in this post:

I didn't take the battery out though. It was low but not dead.
Since then it has happened once again, a few days ago, this time at 93% full. I was doing nothing at all taxing to the phone. I was just in a shop listening to an mp3 with the screen off, and then it stopped and the next thing I saw was the bootloop. Luckily (thanks to the new kernel?) I could just delete cache/dalvik and be back up and running again without having to reinstall everything. Today my screen temporarily went a weird purple colour like in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2216867 . Sounds like it's just dying in general really, rather than anything else. My phone contract upgrade date is in two days. Purely a coincidence of course. Weird how phones tend to last about the length of a mobile phone contract. Until then I'm just running on power saving mode and hoping for the best.
Hello everyone,
I have been using a Xperia Z1 for around last 6 months and updated to Lollipop 5.1.1 two months ago. Everything was fine until last week when my phone started to get affected by the battery bug.
The phone works fine and the battery gets discharged in leaps. For example, when I use the phone from 100%, it goes down in the usual way, let's say for 1 hour usage it drops up to 90% which is quite normal. But, when lock the screen and keep it idle for sometime and when I take it back, the battery has dropped a leap, usually by 10-15%.
Yesterday, I was using the phone normally and kept it idle for the entire night and battery has been dropped only from 85% to 79% without stamina mode. That's good. However, when I restarted the phone in the morning, the battery suddenly dropped to 18%. :crying:
I tried calibrating the battery, charging/discharging cycles and removing batterystats.bin. But, the issue is still here.
I think my phone has been affected by the famous Xperia battery bug in Lollipop which means that my battery is damaged. But, before replacing the battery is there anything else that I could do to overcome the issue. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
+ My phone is rooted on stock 5.1.1 (14.6.A.0.368) with XZDualRecovery and locked bootloader. If I repair the phone with PCC will it cause any harm or bricking since because of the customer recovery?
Claiming warranty is out of option since the phone has been rooted and flashed with custom recovery.
I don't know why people call it a lollipop bug. There will be a time a battery reaches its end of live. That's what has hit you right now. Your descripte symptoms are from a dying battery. I have seen some dying battery's from me or friends. The battery was holding the charge normally and suddenly no more.
Replace it and all should be fine again.

But, can this happen on a phone that is just 7 months old? Thats what makes me to think that this could be a bug.
I have the same issue, but mine drops to 0% and after waiting some time and booting it the percentage is back up. I have my phone for 2 years now, and the problem appeared in Lollipop also.

It's okay for a 2 year old phone as Lithium batteries wear out with time. In my case, it's kinda disappointing...
So, after searching the entire Internet, I can understand that this is a common issue with Xperia Z1 and Z1 compact and replacing the battery seems to be the only possible solution. I searched EBay for a battery but couldn't choose a good quality one. Can someone guide me on this please?

Your battery is definitely dying and it has nothing to do with roms. Get a battery that the seller claims to be OEM. That's your best bet...

You are correct becouse I experience som drops in the range of 5-20% in less than a minute and once 30%. All the time while the phone was in standby mode except once where it did it right in my face (10%). My battery status is reported being fine. I also forced shutdown the phone as per the calibration method for non-rooted phones. Though I did notice dalvik cache wasn't rebuilt and so there is no way to have it refreshed manually except system updates which does this.
Anyway I did remove some apps and did some changes and after this I have not had any sudden drop for weeks. Two of the apps where Truecaller and Facebook official app. Will check though if it was a third one to. I believe one of these or both where playing havok. Especially the Facebook app as it takes liberties I find suspicious, is buggy, can crash the kernel (any app that can do that is doing shady work IMO) and had the addition of a "Video Player" service that was running permanently after you launch the FB app once. I instead use Metal for Facebook now. Pretty much same experience, only 10MB RAM used instead of 90MB and no batter y drain either or any other problem. So in short I believe one of these where the culprits and since many use the FB app that might be the one playing badly with Sony Z1 system.
And If you use Adguard also check if there are apps getting high ratio of ads blocked (or analytics data blocked). Might be some dont get proccessed right in the battery system due to it calculating it wrong. Google Frameworks, Google Contacts, Play Services, Mobilestorage Checker and a few more I disabled the ad filtering for. Though this did not change the battery drop problem previously. It only went away when I uninstalled named apps above.

From personal experience with Google and battery issues, I'll tell you this...
Do a factory reset or better yet flash the next monthly update using the factory image with the -w still in the script to force the full wipe. If this does not fix the problem then your due a warranty claim in my opinion. They will tell you to do all this as part of the troubleshooting anyway and you'll probably have to go through the motions regardless but it'll at least give you a better idea where you stand before jumping through their hoops!

This is good advice. If a factory reset doesn't help, I'd see about a warranty claim as well. The Pixel 4XL is a good phone but while the battery life isn't one of it's strong suits, I've never seen anything like you describe. They are pretty good about replacing a bad phone after the usual troubleshooting. It's a pain but worth the trouble.
This looks exactly like what was happening on the Nexus 6P phones. This is the first case that I've seen on the pixel like though. It was so widespread on the Nexus 6P line that there is a class action suit still going on. I had three of those phones with this issue. As CyperpodS2 said a factory reset should be your first option. I doubt it will help if it is a hardware problem but Google will require you to do that before the will RMA your phone anyway.
Thanks guys. Tried a factory reset but it has just done exactly the same thing as before. Gets to about 30-29% and then drops within a matter of seconds to zero and turns off. I'll phone my carrier today to see how they respond to this. I'll let you know how I get on.
Oh and here is the battery history.
Good luck. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a replacement.
Crap! Me too! Everything was fine and then all of a sudden battery is dead. I also have issues charging to 100% using my wireless charger but maybe it's the charger. The sudden death at 30% battery just started happening. I did install the latest February update and don't remember it doing this before then. Up until now I've been really happy with battery life.
I've been hitting 30% and lower recently due to changing when I charge the phone. I have not seen a sudden drop once I reach 30% and I have battery saver turn on automatically at 25% and can get hours out of that. To be honest, since I deleted facebook account my phones have always had better battery live than friends with the same device. It was the first thing I noticed about removing FB/Messenger, I went to a single charge for 1.5 days.
Just to update. Google did replace my Pixel XL without any issues. I didn't get any feedback on the phone I sent, but I assume the fact that they haven't charged me anything suggests that they did find a problem. Hope you get your issue sorted out @SnrSuave and that these are isolated problems.
I've been doing some testing and trying to recalibrate the battery. Seems to be better now. I let the battery run down completely empty and then fully charge while turned off. Last night I got the battery down to 10% without it dropping fast.
My experience last days
Once it didn't load over 15% (display bug)
All is fine after complete empty device
Good to hear others are solving their issues. I had run my battery down and charged fully a few times, but didn't improve things for me. Hopefully just one of those random issues that happen from time to time. replaced device running well. :good:
I had the same **** with my 3xl.
In the end i RMA it.....
