I recently reflashed my Nexus One to stock in order to update to 2.2. However, I am having an issue with the recovery image. I flashed stock recovery.img but when I boot into recovery I only get the yellow ! inside a tringle and the android logo. No text comes up and I have to pull the battery to restart the phone.

The Yellow ! inside the triangle is the stock recovery. Press the volume up and power button and you will see the option to apply the update.zip of froyo that's presumably on the root of your sd card

The triangle comes up when I try and add the frf72 andfrf83 and everytime the upgrade is aborted. where does it show you the current recovery that is on the phone?
Like he said, it IS the stock recovery. Read the update it's frf50 -> frf83, not frf72 -> frf83.
As far as I know it will only update an update.zip, so you wouldn't be able to have two of the same file name on the sdcard.

Correct I wouldn't have 2 update.zip on the card. if i am correct it goes erd79 to ere27 then you can upgrade to frf50 > frf72 and finally frf83. But I cant even for an update to ere27, nor can i update it from frf50 to 72 or 83 manually. And I do believe I have the stock recovery image installed.
ok.....finally got to FRF83 but then when I root my device is useless. works great without root.
How do I root FRF83?

OK, im losing it. I have a FRF91 Bootloader unlocked N1. I am trying to install the RA Recovery, so i can root. Everytime i have used ADB and installed RA recovery, i get the completed message, but when i attempt to run the recovery, i get stuck with the android and the !.
Will the RA Recovery that worked for EPE34B work with FRF91? Or is there another recovery version?
same issue, so I suspect its a fix somewhere on the forums. I shall go look and will post back here if I find something
EDIT: Its a rooted FRF91 found here. Appears to give root then RA should work. I'm trying it to see for myself...

Use this, it should give you root back. Shouldn't matter what version of Froyo you are on.

..my problem is that i cannot install Amon over my stock FRF91 ROM. That is the first step for root, and yet i cannot do it.
Are you flashing the recovery, then rebooting? Try it without rebooting.
When I did this last night with FRF91, I noticed that after flashing the stock recovery would return if I rebooted before actually running the Amon RA recovery I had just flashed.
You have to delete/rename 2 files in /system to stop the phone reverting to stock recovery. They are install-recovery.sh and recovery-from-boot.p
I have been trying to update my rooted 2.2 FRF50 to FRF91 for a day noe and all I get is error messages
E: not verified files
I just got an OTA and it's doing the same and stuck at RA recovery with same message. I reboot and still on FRF50. Any ideas?

Oh for the love of jeebus, not again. You want OTA, lose the custom recovery.

that might be pretty handy come the next OTA update. So as long as i remove the .sh and .p the phone shouldnt be able to find them to apply them when i reboot. Perfect.
Thanks!
..this should be somewhere in the stickies..
I really want to install the latest OTA update frg83b. However when my phone tries this I get the android exclamation mark splash screen. I figure this is probably because I have custom recovery. I have spent some time looking around the forums to find the solution. It seems I most likely need to restore stock recovery.
I tried doing this through fastboot, but got the error (remote: signature verify fail) after flashing recover.img from my previous nandroid backup. I am reluctant to do a complete nandroid restore as I would lose data from the last month.
Any ideas to help me get frg83b (I know it's not the biggest update in the world, but would also like my phone to be ready to OTA update gingerbread issue-free when it finally appears)
(Note: I am not using a custom rom, had been debating trying cyanogen mod, but as yet still have the stock rom)
Are you running the latest Amon-Ra recovery? All you need to do is toggle the verification to off. ClockworkMod will work too
Just do that and it'll let you flash it no problem

Oh. How do I toggle verification off? (running clockwork mod 2.5.1.0 but can flash amon-ra if easier)

I'm curious about this as well, same same, clockwork mod 2.5.1.0. I've been through settings a couple times and can't find a setting to toggle signature verification on/off. I'm running cyan 6.1 and don't get ota updates, but was curious anyway, thanks!
I'm assuming you mean frg83d. If your getting the triangle and exclamation point you have stock recovery. When you get there press power and volume down at the same time and release. It may take a few times. Really to go to frg83d from a custom rom you need to go back to stock first. There's another thread in here called something like nexus one back to stock that works really well .
I reread and saw your not using a custom rom so just download the update and put it in the root of your SD card. Then go into recovery and update.
I don't use clockworkmod so I can't say for sure, but i already read around that it had signature verification off by default.
Try flashing Amon_Ra's recovery through rom manager and manually reboot into recovery after to flash it. The setting is there for sure. Then just go back to clockworkmod after you're done if you want

A couple of months ago I rooted my N1 FRF91 with Universal Androot. Later I flashed psfMod (based on CMW) custom recovery using flash_image recovery.
Now I don't have any use for custom recovery or a rooted device anymore, and want to get back on track to be prepared OTA 2.3.
I have received notifications for 2.2.1 OTA (2-part update), but the device just locks up during the upgrade and gets back to rooted 2.2 after a reboot.
So how do I apply the 2.2.1 update? Could I just flash the original recovery with flash_image (and what file should I get in that case), unroot with androot and just use the OTA? Or is there any better/easier way?
The question feels kinda nooby, but the only guides I find is to get back to shipping conditions (Which I don't want to keep my settings and so on),using fastboot which I can't since my bootloader still is locked or assumed that you are using a custom ROM which I don't.
Thanks for your help!
There is no need to get rid of a custom recovery or root to apply those updates. This has been covered in many threads.
This is what I would do. Use flash_image to flash Amon_RA 1.9.0 recovery. Then download the update (make sure you download the correct one: there is one that is FRG83D from FRF91, which is what you will need if you are running FRF91)and save it to the root of your sdcard. Then boot into recovery, and flash the update. (You will lose root and your custom recovery, but just root again if you want.) That covers part 2 of 2 of the update.
If you want to flash the first part, dowload the HBOOT 0.35 update file (floating around the forums) and place it in the root of your sdcard. Boot into recovery and flash that. You may have problems flashing certain custom recoveries after you flash the 0.35 HBOOT.
Thanks for your reply. If I follow your steps, the 2.3 OTA will work when it eventually comes?

If you keep a custom recovery, you will still get the notification, but you will have to manually apply it. If you keep the stock recovery, it should be able to apply it automatically. No word yet on if the newer HBOOT is a requirement for 2.3 or not.
so i went to download mode and flashed back stock with odin i896 rogers,
rooted the phone was going to install firefly rom. But when i downloaded rom manager and tried to do the captivate clockworkmod flash it doesnt work. I have tried using a update.zip and everything from 3e recovery pressed the reinstall packages doesnt work. I have tried to copy the recovery file to the system/bin and stuff, still doesnt work. Any way to fix this.
Also, i saw in the reviews everybody with a captivate is having issues with that TODAY.
anybody know how to fix this? I have tried a recovery file replacement and all that doesnt work? Anybody? I have read other threads about this those files dont work...
If you have 3rd recovery issues. You need either get into download mode and odin to your stock firmware or use odin to flash a kernel with recovery built in using the standalone odin. I know that firebird offers an odin flashable kernel which you could use.
is their a way to downgrade from 3e to 2e, to be able to flash? for rogers 2.2?
What are you even talking about, in terms of 3e and 2e?
Just flash back to stock ROM, put update.zip in your root of storage, and once you've done that, reinstall packages TWICE, by now you should be in a green menu, this is the Clockwork Recovery menu. Using the volume keys and the power button, navigate to 'Install from .zip from sdcard', and select the ROM you want to install. Once you've done that, all you have to do is reselect it to confirm.
If that doesn't work, or it's telling you something funny when you try to install, your .zip is corrupt and you might need to redownload it.
I believe you can use sgs kernel flasher app to flash a new kernel. I would suggest which ever fire fly uses. This will fix your recovery and allow j you to flash the rom
i think this is a server issue with rom manager, because captivate cwm flash isnt working, i will try later.
If you have 3e recovery this won't make difference
this is a known issue of recovery 3e - signature issue.
you can do the followings for flashing the rom:
1. copy the update.zip to your sdcard root folder;
2. shut down your phone and use key combo to boot into recovery mode;
3. apply the change twice to get into cwm;
4. select your rom zip file and flash the rom;

if you are on 3e recovery...you can apply the update.zip a million times but it wont work .....
need to be on a modded 3e recovery that allows unsigned zips or on 2e recovery...

since he is on the stock rom, using key combo will get him into the stock recovery and apply the changes will work for him if using the correct update.zip.

not everyones 'stock' is 2.1 with 2e recovery....maybe he just got his phone from rogers and it had 2.2 on it already. considering in his first post he says hes already on stock rom and it has 3e recovery.....
to clear it up, im on rogers 2.2, i was on stock from kies then flashed to firefly with ease when i did the recovery file change, the problem i think is you know the first button u click in rom manager it isnt downloading the thing. Last time i downloaded it for captivate did the switch and worked, this time i think the server is offline.
i flashed from firefly to stock, the/now the recovery...^^^^^^^^

if you did the recovery file change so that you bypass 3e recovery signature verification, just drop the update.zip onto your /sdcard/
you dont need to use ROM manager for anything

and put in the recovery file with root manager into system/bin replaced it and
then flashed into recovery from rom manager and did reinstall packages twice and it worked. Thanks for the info ^^^^^^everybody.
I have a friend with a S5830 (not S5830i, not S5830g; plain S5830). She would like ICS/CM9 installed on it.
The phone does NOT have the latest official update. Its stock recovery doesn't have a "apply update from SDCARD" option; rather, it has "apply sdcard/update.zip", which means I have to rename files I want to flash as update.zip.
I rooted it following this procedure (renaming Root.zip to update.zip). Everything went fine.
I then applied CWM following this (same rename required).
Now it'll boot fine into the stock Android ROM if I do nothing, but if I press the home button to get it into recovery it gets stuck on the SAMSUNG logo screen. Getting it unstuck requires pulling the battery; upon reinsertion it'll again boot fine into stock, but get stuck into recovery.
I'd gladly apply the official update and THEN redo the whole thing if necessary, but now that I can't access the recovery menu anymore I don't get the option to flash anything from the SD card.
What to do?
Flash 2.3 through odin

Hi Fallingwater,
You could try Clock Work Mod Recovery v5.0.2.6 Flashable via Odin
Good luck.
The latest firmware isn't requiered, having Gingerbread 2.3 version is enough so look at this:
ROOT + CWM 5.0.2.6.FIX
In the end I solved this by letting KIES update the phone to the latest official firmware. Rooted and CWMed and worked fine from there.
In retrospect I should have probably used Odin from the start.
