[Q] help me update to frg83b? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I really want to install the latest OTA update frg83b. However when my phone tries this I get the android exclamation mark splash screen. I figure this is probably because I have custom recovery. I have spent some time looking around the forums to find the solution. It seems I most likely need to restore stock recovery.
I tried doing this through fastboot, but got the error (remote: signature verify fail) after flashing recover.img from my previous nandroid backup. I am reluctant to do a complete nandroid restore as I would lose data from the last month.
Any ideas to help me get frg83b (I know it's not the biggest update in the world, but would also like my phone to be ready to OTA update gingerbread issue-free when it finally appears)
(Note: I am not using a custom rom, had been debating trying cyanogen mod, but as yet still have the stock rom)

Are you running the latest Amon-Ra recovery? All you need to do is toggle the verification to off. ClockworkMod will work too
Just do that and it'll let you flash it no problem

Oh. How do I toggle verification off? (running clockwork mod 2.5.1.0 but can flash amon-ra if easier)

I'm curious about this as well, same same, clockwork mod 2.5.1.0. I've been through settings a couple times and can't find a setting to toggle signature verification on/off. I'm running cyan 6.1 and don't get ota updates, but was curious anyway, thanks!

I'm assuming you mean frg83d. If your getting the triangle and exclamation point you have stock recovery. When you get there press power and volume down at the same time and release. It may take a few times. Really to go to frg83d from a custom rom you need to go back to stock first. There's another thread in here called something like nexus one back to stock that works really well .

I reread and saw your not using a custom rom so just download the update and put it in the root of your SD card. Then go into recovery and update.

I don't use clockworkmod so I can't say for sure, but i already read around that it had signature verification off by default.
Try flashing Amon_Ra's recovery through rom manager and manually reboot into recovery after to flash it. The setting is there for sure. Then just go back to clockworkmod after you're done if you want

Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery + MarketFix, Radio now Broken

Here's the sequence of events, wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction for repair.
I am on Froyo, the initial leak rooted by Paul.
I wanted to get my market working, so I found this billg market fix + busybox update zip.
I installed RomManager, and it suggested I flash ClockworkMod Recovery, so I did. It guessed my phone correctly (I think) as the "Nexus One (GSM)". I'm now no longer totally sure - but that IS the T-Mobile version right?
Anyway, I flashed clockworkmod recovery, and then I chose the market fix, and then I rebooted.
Everything seemed OK but the first warning sign was no graphical boot screen (no sparking multi-colour X). It booted up OK but no connection to the network at all. I can not even enable wi-fi.
Not I'm not too sure what to do, would hate to make matters worse. I can boot into recovery and it is ClockworkMod recovery, but of course there are no backups on that thing I can restore to. I was using AmonRA recovery before.
Any thoughts?
TIA Paul

find a froyo radio update from somewhere. there on alot of the rom pages
and flash a new rom after the radio and see what happens
The latest clockworkmod is buggy for me too. You can flash back to amon's recovery in fastboot.
Quick update
Flashing the Froyo radio update was no help.
I re-flashed Amon RA recovery and now I'm reapplying the original Paul's frf50.
Fingers crossed.
Phew, OK I'm back on the air.
Now I have to try to figure out how to apply the market fix without using ClockworkMod!!!
Thanks for help/advice.

[Q] ROM Manager Signature Verification Failure

A few weeks ago I flashed the Cognition V2.2 ROM and everything was fine until it started getting twitchy a few days ago. I tried to use the ROM Manager to restore the backup that was created during the flash but I keep getting the same error message and the phone does not seem to go into the Clockwork Mod Recovery but stays in the Android system recovery. The message says that the whole-file signature has failed to verify and that the installation was aborted. Does anyone have any idea how I can get my phone back to normal?

Common knowledge that the version of Cognition you are running is not supported by ROM Manager, it is 3e recovery and Clockwork needs 2e. You can update to the newer Cognition which has 2e recovery. I recommend you read the facts sheet befor flashing, the method you should use is Odin one click back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, then master clear so that nothing is lingering from your previous setup, backup everything from your internal storage to your pc first, this will wipe everything from your internal, replace it after you finish Master clear. you should only replace the update.zip, ClockworkMod and your music, photo's and that stuff. Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
Here's the link for the new Cognition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
So I tried what you recommended and got my phone back to the stock condition but I'm still not able to use ROM manager or flash another ROM. After I root the phone I install ROM Manager, flash it to the current edition and then try to reboot into recovery but when it gets to recovery it gives the following error message...
--Installing from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted
Also the header of the screen states that I am in Android system recovery <2e>. If I am not mistaken, shouldn't I be in recovery <3e>? If so how do I get there? I've tried flashing the stock Kernel but that didn't work and I even installed the internal betas correctly but no cigar.

so put it in download mode, and use ODIN one click back to stock...then leave it the hell alone....
Like I said, I've already used Odin. Everything is back to stock except for the Kernel and a stock kernel install with Odin doesn't seem to work. Odin says that the install passed but nothing changes on the phone itself. All things considered, the phone is stock but not capable of going into Clockwork Mod recovery.

Rom manager will work just fine with 2e recovery. Just delete any update.zip files you have in your home directory - then open rom manager and reflash clockworkmod the cappy - then you should be good to go.
As for whether or not that is the stock kernel I am not sure, but how can you tell just by looking at it if you don't know which kernel is the stock one?
I've mounted my internal and external sd cards and removed any updates but it still gives the same error. After I used the odin one-click to flash the stock rom I used the master clear as recommended. Now, if I am not mistaken, shouldn't that erase all of my user data? I reinstalled my espn app so I could follow my football team and the app still remembered my preferences and favorites. This makes me think that the master clear did not finish the job. Thoughts?

Master clear should've done that. If you are restoring your apps and settings using Titanium Backup then you are restoring user data which you should not do.
When you Master Clear is your device on and on the home screen, it needs to be. Don't Master Clear in Recovery mode or Download mode or it does nothing. Also you need to have debugging on.

That is the stock kernel. Just so you know if you are running stock with root you can simply place the update.zip from the Clockwork folder, you should have backed up before flashing and Master clear, back into your internal. ClockworkMod does fail on first attempt to flash sometimes, it happenned to me the first time I flashed it, the second time worked like a charm. Are you rooted? You need root to use ROM Manager and debugging should be on.

After you deleted the update.zip then opened rom manager and flashed clockworkmod it should of put a new update.zip on your phone in your home directory - can you confirm that this is the case?
Also you may not have had a successful master clear - you may want to do it again then redo odin3 one click. Also if I am remembering correctly I believe you have the option to clear cache or user data or both in stock recovery you may want to try that as well.
It all works now. The issue was with the master clear. I guess that I did try to run it in the download mode. Thanks a million guys, i really appreciate it.
Maybe I was a bit premature on that. ROM Manager works beautifully but I cannot install updates or flash a custom ROM. The Manager was able to backup the system correctly and enter clockwork mod recovery but it cannot install the update. If the update is on the internal SD it says that...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(bad)
and if the update is on the external SD it says that there is no such file or directory. Am I doing it wrong or is there still an underlying issue?

/sdcard/update.zip should only boot into clockwork recovery from stock recovery or boot to stock recovery from clockwork recovery if you flashed clockworkmod correctly from rom manager - and so long as you are not renaming any other files as update.zip after you flash clockworkmod recovery.
Which custom rom are you attempting to install?
I got it. The zip file was corrupted. Now, should I be able to boot into normal clockwork mod recovery with the Cognition 2.2 Beta 7 cuz when I try clockwork recovery it boots into normal recovery? I'm still a little hazy about all this.

When you first boot into recovery it should be stock recovery. While in stock recovery when you select reinstall packages it will reboot into clockwork recovery - if you flashed clockworkmod recovery correctly from rom manager and it put the appropriate update.zip into your home directory.
And just to note: don't be renaming any files as update.zip if you are using clockwork recovery to flash something.

Can't flash Nexus

My nexus has been a great platform for running roms for quite a while now, but after installing CM6 as of late it has been really picky about what it can flash. For instance the only way I got it to install the normal stock rom afterwards was by putting it in as passimg.zip. Every time I try to flash something to it now, the signature verification fails. Anyone else have this problem?
Edit: If I install a rooted room, it gives me
"assert failed: !less_than_int(1277930906, getprop("ro.build.date.utc"))
E: Error in /sdcard/update blah blah .zip
(Status 7) Installation Aborted
Did you lose root?
I don't think so, I could try unlocking the boot loader again but it says unlocked at the top already...and it won't even flash normal signed passion roms...
what recovery do you have? have yopu tried fastboot flash recovery? like amon rah
I ended up using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
to fix it.
It still refuses any update.zip file that isnt OTA...
every signature varification fails instantly. So I guess until I throw this phone in the trash pile or just use it for an MP3 player..its not going to be doing anything in the way of modding
If you've used the original shipping ROM tutorial/passimg, then you'll have a stock recovery that will of course only install released signed things.

right and I flashed clockworks recovery to get it off the standard. I guess I could go out and get Root again without it, but at this point I don't see the point with Gingerbread coming out. I'm just glad to not have a paper weight sitting next to my computer again.
btw Calling Tmo/HTC doesn't help. Most of the guys there don't have a clue what FRG83 is even lol
Keep in mind, if you have the stock on there, it will wipe out your custom recovery and restore it to the stock recovery every time you restart the phone.
So if you flashed Clockwork, after a reboot the stock recovery will be there again.
Yes amonra and cwr have options to toggle off verification best to start with amonra recovery then go through the steps

Back to stock stuck on AT&T logo

I decided to root my phone and try some ROMS last night on my Captivate. Love it by the way except one problem that I can not seem to figure out.
Before I did any flash I used ROM Manager to take 2 backups of my stock ROM and also used Titanium to backup all user apps and data.
Everytime I try to go back to stock and the phone reboots after recovery mode I get the AT&T logo and it never goes anywhere.
How do I get back to stock?
THANK!
If you are trying to restore stock through nancroid backup that won't work. You need to use odin.
What build is your phone? You can find it under your battery, something between 1006-1012
It is 1012. I thought you could just restore from those backups to get back to stock.
I have never used odin before. How do I go about that?
Thanks!
I can not find a good download for Odin. Could somebody provide please?
Thanks!
With your build you need to be careful what odin you use
You wavy to follow this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
Clockwork does not restore kernel and modem. You are stuck at at&t screen because your system is ext 4 used on roms, and your nandroid is rfs. Long and short it won't work
So.... I am a bit confused now. Is there even a way to get back to stock at this point?
The link I posted
Your stock is jh7, odin One click is jf6. The procedure laid out in the link will get you back to jh7, although it takes a couple steps.
As long as you can get into recovery you can probably reflash any rom you have on your sd
Yikes thats a tall order to get back. Thought it would be more simple. So it is easy getting to a point to flash ROMS... Not so easy going back.
I'm also stuck in the same vicious cycle as we type.
I got 2 different stock rom backups and a cognition backup and can't get nothing to restore factory. I got premium ROM Manager. I can get into 2 different recovery screens. 1 from the Clockwork v2.5.1.3-voodoo lagfix and 1 using the update.zip on my root. Can't restore anything that gets me past the ATT logo.

Have you tried this
Phone off
Hold volume up and down and power
Let go when at&t comes up
Should be green recovery
Select install zip from sd
Choose zip
Select rom file that is saved on your sd, any you may of tried
Confirm
If your lucky maybe you can flash the rom
Uhh ??? Somehow from the recovery mode I just re-installed Cognition 3.04 back on my phone by browsing to the ROM.zip an installing it. I have to charge my phone for a few but I'll definitely come back and tell how I did it after a while. I think it was by browsing to cognitionv3.zip from 1 of the recovery menus insead of going to the update.zip. That beats the hell out of going through all the steps of going back to stock.
Thanks for the help.
EDIT:
Yeah somewhat like above post, only I had the Cognition (red) recovery menu and I went to install .zip and browsed to the cognitionv3.zip on my sd and installed it. *BLAM* back to Cognitionv3.04 I'll work with that till I got more time to mess with the other.

Yep I have tried that. Or at least I guess....
I go into the recovery screen but the problem is the only zip files I have are my custom ROMS. I did a complete backup with ROM Manager of the stock ROM before flashing however it did not create a zip file, it created a folder which contains everything that was backed up. I have tried to restore from that but when I do and the phone restarts it sticks on the AT&T white logo screen.
I am not saying restore stock, I am saying flash a rom. it may get you a working phone
Oh yeah I have done that just fine. I am using Cognition.
I am just trying to find my path back to stock.

Exactly, If you flashed a ROM on the phone the ROM is still there. Just use the recovery mode and choose "install a zip from sd" then go to "choose a zip from sd" then it will let you browse the sd for the .zip(rom) you just had. (not stock). It should be successful. Worked for me.
At least you will have a working phone and you can then look into going stock once you've read up a little more on it.
Just trying to help.
EDIT: oh, OK, I myself was in a panic and had just found that possible.
No problem. Thank you for the help!
I was thinking that when I did the backup with ROM Manager that it was creating a ROM version of the stock so I could flash back. Guess not though.

[Q] Trying to flash Serendipity 6.3...

I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on the sticky on how to flash a custom ROM you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.
Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?
flash to stock and master clear is not needed. what IS needed are specifics on WHAT error message you get when trying to flash the rom you want
The error message is
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted"
Then it brings be to the blue menu so i just select reboot system now
bad download, re-download rom.
May be completely off, but it doesn't sound like you're actually in clockwork mod recovery, but rather stock recovery.
But here's the post with the one click odin with mirrors and I personally would suggest useing it since I generally like to stick to as clean a flash as I can:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Second, I don't know if you've ever seen MobileTechVids tutorial on how to flash custom roms, but I suggest you watch the full series first if you haven't already.
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsafJ-9uRqk
I watch the series and try and stick as close to the tut as I can when I'm unsure (or the one provided by the Rom maker as they know what's best for their rom)...
One suggestion, when flashing Serendipity disconnect your phone from cable right before the actual flashing (gave me a glitch in which I couldn't mount storage via usb). Other than that, read read read. I feel it's all I do when it comes to this stuff, but proper research is indispensible.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either
Power off, hold 3 buttons att screen will come on. Keep holding. Screen will go off. Keep holding. Screen comes on again let off the power button but keep the volumes held, this will boot you into stock recovery, since you said you flashed cwm already I'm assuming you mean with rom manager, so the update.zip should be on your sdcard, so just reinstall packages twice and you should boot into cwm.

On serendipities main "download" page they have instructions to install. In those instructions is a link to a file you can download. Place that file along with the serendipity 6.3.zip file in the root of your sd card. Use the " 3 button" technique or Rom managers "reboot to recovery" option to get into stock recovery. Hit "reinstall packages" once/possibly twice. That will put you into clockwork mod recovery. Select install zip from sd card, find the serendipity6.3.zip and click power to flash. Confirm. And after it does some stuff it will ask you to reboot. Upon reboot it will as if you want to enable lagfix. Hit plain "Yes". Watch it do its thing and viola...
You have the "dirty" way of how to flash serendipity... But first I please ask you to spend atleast a day reading this forum or others and understanding these instructions and the reasons behind them.
followed instructions off the website and still doesn't work
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Can't even load the stock that I had on there. I don't know what to do. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.
Did you run a restore using TiBu at all? Or was it just a straight flash from stock to Serendipity?
Plus, were you running a phone that came with 2.2 out of the box? Or did you upgrade to stock Froyo yourself?

I finally was able to get odin to read the phone and flash back to stock. It was a learning process. I realized that I needed not only the Serendipity_6.3.zip file but ALSO the kitchen file to included with it. That wasn't in the directions I don't think. Finally got it all on there. I love it now. I appreciate everyone's help. Any word on a how-to for Bluedipity?
