When travelling, very often check into hotels that do not have wifi but only LAN points in the room. So can't access Internet with the HD2.
Is there such an adapter that connects from the LAN point to mini USB to be plugged into the HD2 for internet access?
If there is, the the HD2 access internet with it's stock ROM or does it need some application?
Thanks
Wow now that would be the deal!!!
Thoughts anybody?
I googled and found some adapters, but not sure if they can be used on the HD2.
As stated they can be used on laptops which do not have RJ45 LAN inputs. So these can convert from RJ45 to USB for laptops.
What about HD2, can they work or what apps are needed to make it work?
Just use a pocket router.

Thanks, that is a good alternative. Converting wired to wireless so that HD2 can access, with the added advantage that more than one device can access the internet.
Appreciate more suggestions from anyone.
OR if money is not an issue.. try this :

more compact, more functional.. less wires needed ( plugs directly into the wall)
PS: could serve as a repeater.. so u can use it at home to enhance your wireless network.
why not just access the internet via your mobile provider's gsm network?
evidently, if its a different country from you home country, this concept will make a lot of sense. better still, if u can plug a PC into the LAN connection, then if u are using windows Vista or 7, you can tether Wifi from your laptop!
Look at £2.99 adapter from Amazon.
It connects your USB cable to Lan port.

Maybe he wants to use the internet more than his allowed amount. Also, if he had a laptop, why on earth would he want to use his HD2 to browse the internet???

When overseas, using GSM for internet access is very very costly. When I travel I don't bring along a laptop as I carry lots of camera equipment.
So that's why looking for a lighter solution for internet access when back in hotels.

Thanks will check them out. Actually I done quite a bit of search yesterday and found the ASUS WL-330GE affordable and suit my needs. But am not sure if it's available locally. Waiting for reply from local distributor, else will have to mail order.

You just plug your data/charging cable that you have with you when you travel to charge your phone, into the adapter.

But most adapters come with standard USB plugs.
Thanks to Paten, I've got a solution to my problem.
Got a ASUS pocket travel router, WL-330gE yesterday and tested with my home LAN.
Plugged in ethernet cable from my home router to the unit powered up and works perfectly first time. HD2 detected it and I was able to login the security codes.
Plug N Play, no setup required. For just S$80/-. I would recommend this unit anytime to anyone looking for such a solution.
Thank you all for your valuable tips.

The £2.99 adapter from Amazon, has a 'female' USB socket, so HD2 cable will plug straight into it.

That may be but does Windows Mobile recognize a lan connection when it's plugged in that way? Maybe it does. £2.99 seems like a cheap price, let us know if it works.

Hi all,
Should not work since , at least for the time being, there is no way to profit from Leo's USB HOST capabilities .
In spite of
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=638201
i'm personally still doubtfull that Leo has such capability.
However if interested see also:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480899
I can add that a proper WM driver for USB-LAN conv. would be necessary.
In the past (for an old device definitely having working Usb-Host capabilities) i tried without success to find such a driver.

That should be possible, but it will raise your handy costs, in case you use radio/gprs!
There might be a way to connect to a hot spot and use the device to akt as modem.
wireless modem is what i was thinking not using gprs just running through my home wireless internet connection i have in the house rather than having to plug the laptop into the router via a cable if any of that make any sense.
any external 3g dongle on hp touchpad?
edit: sorry i meant 3g dongle not 3d lol
What's that mean?
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
I presume the OP is asking af anyone is aware of any 3G dongles working on the Touchpad. They may do, but as the USB port is unpowered, you will need some way of powering the dongle which is going to defeat the object of portability. You would be better of going for a tether to mobile phone, or using a MiFi.
I dont think webOS has USB networking support. Possibly with an Android port something would work, but for now no.
lol yup i meant 3g obviously and not 3d srry lol ... usb port on touchpad is underpowered? that means every device you connect to it must be self powered?? why such a poor design by hp?

They probably never intended for the touchpad to serve as a USB host. So its just powerful enough to be a client to something else.
On that note, is there any likely chance of using the usb slot for any third party devices?
There are videos around showing how to connect it up with an OTG cable and a Y-cable to run a keyboard. I am waiting for my OTG cable so I can try a powered hub, but it has been reported that this method allows keyboards, USB sticks and hard drives to work.

To the OP, if you edit the first post, you can change the title from there. (it still reads "3d")

I got the phone to work
3g modem on usb is working now with PPP widget, but one has to use an intermediary USB hub.
I had an ASUS USB ethernet adapter sitting around and thought I'd see if it worked with the Z2. Plugged in a USB OTG cable and the ethernet adapter, turned off wi-fi, and surfed away on the LAN. Of course not a common need but I thought I'd share my results for those that might be somewhere with only a wired connection.

Nice one. But one question which asus adapter did you get I'm on ebay and I'm seeing several models. Can you post the model number on yours seems like some have different chipsets on them and I wanna make sure I order the right one. Thanks.
Any answer to this? I am looking at purchasing the Z2 and wired ethernet is a need for me.
Since there was no reply updating this I have ordered one off eBay and will report which one it is and if it works or not when I receive it.
The one I ordered off eBay worked fine for me. This is the eBay link -http://m.ebay.com/itm/261423773411?_mwBanner=1
It's an Original OEM Asus USB to RJ45 Ethernet Lan Adapter Part #90-XB3900CA00000 for those that find this after that eBay link is dead.
Just for reference, I initially purchased one off Amazon that was not an Asus brand and it didn't work... I believe it was made by CableMatters.

Actually, yes you can! I just got my otg adapter today and it works perfectly. 100mbits ethernet is much better than my flaky 2.4ghz 54gbit connection. I have a lot of wifi ap's in my neighborhood, so there's a lot of interference.
Look over here for the parts/guide:
productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromecast/xo_NDh5CZA8 :highfive:
Product USB VID/PID Link
Linksys USB300M
Linksys USB3GIG
Apple (A1227)
BobjGear USB to RJ45
D-Link DUB-E100 0b95:7720
Could you argue how you use such adapter? You mean that plugging it on a Chromecast (using the necessary adapters) it just works?

Actually I guess only using another WiFi Access Point which you would bridge to the current WiFi...or you may consider a Wireless Repeater/Extender with all the side effects.

If you follow the URL he provided you will see it requires a Powered OTG cable to supply power and plug in the USB to Ethernet adapter.
And I probably would be sure to buy only one of those adapters that are listed as others may not be recognized by the device correctly.

Thanks right, it just works.
To make sure it's only using the hardwire, I enabled a mac filter list on my wifi ap and blocked the chromecast's wireless mac address.
has same questions as yours, but now it already being solved.
It appears that the CC can connect via wired ethernet quite easily. A post today on the Australian Whilpool forum describes how it's done. Please see http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2418159&#bottom

A lot cheaper than the adapter Google is selling. Also, you'll only have to buy a Y USB cable other than the USB to Ethernet adapter.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/07/08/google-releases-a-15-ethernet-adapter-for-chromecast/
Here in Canada I can't acquire the official Google adapter for less than $50. Fortunately it turns out I already have a Linksys USB3GIG so I'm ordering the Y-cable from Amazon.ca. Decided to splurge on an $8 one that will ship in two days instead of the $3 that ships from Asia.
Very interesting thing ... I have a zone in the house with an old-ish TV and very very low WiFi ... I will try to Ethernet connection myself ... Thank you for the news I had no idea .
Inviato dal mio SHIELD Tablet utilizzando Tapatalk
So I ended up ordering this AFUNTA cable:
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00EAM8A5G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
It was CDN$8.97 compared to the Importer520 cable at CDN$2.31. But for a price difference cheaper than a sandwich, I was able to get two-day shipping instead of waiting weeks for it to ship from Hong Kong. Totally worth it because my apartment has such bad wi-fi interference that I wanted it solved immediately.
Combined it with my existing Linksys USB3GIG and it worked. Like magic. Once the Ethernet connection is established you'll notice the wi-fi network name no longer appears on the start screen.
I had a difficult time setting up my Chromecast Audio via wifi. Determined it didn't play well with my TP-Link AV500 power line extender. Bought the Chromecast Ethernet adapter and plugged it into the TP-Link Ethernet port. Now it's "set and forget ". Works great.

Does anyone know if there are any USB ethernet adapters that work with these units? I have a couple of Joying 3188 units. I would like to use ethernet if possible on them so I can connect them to a hotspot I have that has an ethernet hub.
I was just going to buy a couple of try them, but perhaps someone can save me the time?
