So I've never posted here before but been using the tips and tricks from the MDA all the way through nexus one.
Anyway, last Wednesday night i had a few too many drinks and my phone suffered a cracked LCD.
Sent my phone to HTC and what came back was a COMPLETELY stock, LOCKED boot loader. still my phone, because i marked the phone's internals with my initials before i sent it out. I called HTC and they said my phone still has a warranty.
just an FYI
Anyone else experience this?
What "internals" did you mark? Most likely it's not the same phone.
Could be same phone, different motherboard.
a referb motherboard would make some sense, I just marked the internal battery tray area with some initials.
This may be a silly question, but wouldn't my device #s be different if they changed out the motherboard? everything still matches the original imei and s/n both on the physical placard and in adb...
Let me know if this is a dumb question...
but why would they replace the mobo in response to a cracked AMOLED screen?

my guess is they probubly flash the whole phone back to stock for testing. Its easier to troubleshoot when you eliminate all outside variables. They prob replaced the screen, used a .img file to flash everything back to stock including the SPL, which would account for the relocked bootloader, and tested to make sure the new screen was working correctly. Am i correct in assuming that all your apps and settings were reset too?

Your not the first to have a re-locked bootloader. Everyone that sent their phone in for repair gets their bootloader re-locked.

Second this.
I've sent mine in twice now for dust..etc.
Both times the same phone has been returned with a locked bootloader (for about 5 mins) ;-)

I sent my unlocked bootloader back and HTC gave me a replacement for free. They didn't charge me anything. They even deemed it as a "software issue".
so u can send ur phone in for the dust under the screen? Whats the turn around on that. And Id be pissed if they re locked my ****. I dont wanna do all that again. Id have to tell them not to ...lol
My dust isnt bad.. only noticeable when screen the screen is in sleep mode in a well lit place.

Hey me too!+++++
Iam a rough kinda guy and thought a gell case would do for protection so i took it to work and didnt even know i dented the back where the sim card is at with a sledge hammer!..bamm SOOOO I cracked the inside of the guts in the phone.. and sent it in for repairs right? I told the HTC tech that I had dust under the screen which I did and told em that the the screen crack from the inside was from constient temp change.... they charge me 130 to fix and I told them to keep the f**cking phone cuz when I had it ,it was all dusty and those bend test and all the videos of it being rugged was **** and was always swichin 3g and ****. so 2 days later I get my phone back .and looks ****in brand new.. the best part is 2 days later after I got it back theres an extra 150 in my account and its from google .130+20 cuz the tech hold fee.. sick uh?
So, if it still somehow the same phone, could it be possible that they simply reflashed something on top of the phone to relock its bootloader?
Meaning it IS possible.

Of course it possible. We just don't have the right SPL.

Just wondering if anyone can share there experiences with the exchange program through att..like what HAVE you gotten away with and what HAVENT you gotten away with and got slapped with the $500 charge lol
I followed the the warranty return thing on this forum, and I got no problem. I had seriously scratched the screen of the phone. I told the manager before sending it to quote she said its "normal wear and tear." But my speaker of the phone was messed up. On that same phone the void button and some ddamage as I was playing with it, I didn't what it was, until I found out later that its to open up the phone.
So, I got away with two major linear scratches on the screen which made writing with the stylus impossible. And I had damaged the button. But I told the manager of this before I sent it in. Or the High_end PDA department.

what did they find wrong with the phone???
i just sent one they sent me, the first time, i put it into the boot loader and noticed that the SPL was HardSPL, it scared me a little and well the screen cracked while i was looking at it an hour later, the phone rang so i looked and the caller ID and suddenly there was a broken screen on my tilt. not sure if they are gonna say anything about hard SPL but it came that way.
(part of me hopes i was holding someones old phone from this site)
oh yeah and this probably shoudn't be in ROM developement, ask a mod to move it to general
oh im just wondering..i was reading a post about putting the old att spl back on for an exchange and someone replied about how theyve returned 6 tilts with major problems all of which should fall outisde of warranty so i just thought id ask as i have a slight problem myself but its not keeping my kaiser from working and i opened a ticket with HTC directly as they dont screw you if you fall outside of warranty...my usb charger was getting a full contact and i had to bend it up and down to get it to stay charging (shoulda just sent it in then lol) and finally the plastic seperator of the pins broke out and then i bent in a pin a few times and that broke off..so i opened it up and soldered it back in and it eventially popped off again so i was thinking i could just squeeze the plastic piece that broke off back in as it wont come out unless you use needle nose pliers and sliding that pin back in..
I did a warranty return not to long ago. Phone was stuck with the radio from hell 1.65.17.10 and didn't have the friendly FrankKaiser that Jockyw2001 developed. Never had an issue with AT&T saying that I had altered the phone in any way. I flashed back to the original shipped ROM. Change the SPL to 1.56 the original one that it came with. I then re-flashed the original shipped ROM. When the ROM flash completed at 50% I unplugged the phone. This way on the phone will only go to the bootloader.
I actually just did a warranty return again today. Had some scratches on the screen that were really bugging me. There weren't big but definitely a nuisance for me. Told them the phone was stuck on the bootloader, or as I put it in "in this three color screen with Red, green, white." They issued a warranty replacement right away.

yeah cause we don't know about the magic we can do with the "pretty rainbow screen" come on ATW you let a few little scratches bug you. i'm still waiting for them to send me one that works, i've sent back three and i still have the original that i bought. two broken usb ports and a broken screen good job at&t for being incompetent
Has anybody done a warranty replacement and convinced them to send a new one and not a refurbed?

actually yes, well they say they will be sending it when the get the phones i just sent back. i talked to Christina and she told me that the phone they will send me next will be the tilt as it comes out of the box, including the software cd, usb cable, stylus, battery, and back cover. i will confirm when i recieve it but they tell me it will be brand new
Well, after I figured out my ROM issues. My phone had some problems with continuously soft resetting. I suspect a bad memory block. I made it clear through out my conversation with the rep that I took really good care of my phone and that I don't know how people can throw their 400 dollar phones around like they are nothing. I also made a point to say my battery seemed to be going bad and that I had done some research about Li-Po batteries going bad and that this seemed to be a classic case. I asked if there was anyway she could send a battery with the phone. (Just so you know, when you call warranty replacement, it seems to me they have two options, send a refurb, or send a full kit) So, she said she could send me a full kit and it is otw now. That is a good thing because my phone wont boot now. I think whether you get caught with a bootloader that is different than OEM kinda depends on who receives the phone on the other end. I'm sure they are SUPPOSED to check that, but I'm sure they can get away with not checking it, and I'm sure there is no incentive for checking it.

They could have said F.U., you broke it we are not resposible.
My phone got stuck in bootloader while doing a rom update.Called AT$T, they sent me through three techs, my answer to all there suggestions were " did it ", " did it ".
Three days later, they sent me a refurb ( in perfect condition ), in the box was the phone, a return mailing label/postage, even a new piece of tape to seal the box. Put the phone in,sealed the box, put on the label, dropped it in the mail box. End of story. The new/refurb has worked great ever since.
Could not have been easier or more pleasant.
So far it has been very positive even when my phone was technically out of warranty they replaced my TILT (not a cheap phone)
I have done 4 returns via mail and 1 by going to a local AT&T Warranty exchange center. NO PROBLEMS, I did revert back to original ROM but I am sure they didn't check. store replacement was in and out in 25 minutes. ( 10 minutes after my phone was looked at they just gave me a new one ).
AT&T You do have great warranty service I will give you that.
so all sounds good i should just stick my device in bootloader mode and send it back?
i can only revert back the rom as i cant sspl it so it shows hardspl AND security unlocked at the top..think thatl make a difference?
My miniUSB port was broke, wouldn't charge or sync most of the time. I called AT&T told them what was wrong and they said they'd send me a replacement. Once the replacement got here, I reverted my phone back to at&t ship specs, sent it back to them and all went well.
My girlfriend and I both had the Hermes, unlocked w/ cooked rom. They physically broke to a point it was hard to revert them back, but eventually was able to, we got 2 brand new Kaisers for $50 a piece. I'd love to know if I can 'loose' this phone and get a new kaiser for another $50 then sell the one i've been using for a couple of months for 2 or 3 hundred. If anyone has done this or knows how let me know!
I recently had to send in my Tilt and recieved a refub in the mail and everything went very smooth. Customer service was good and fast.
just returned 2 8525's and they sent me a tilt, first 8525 white screen problem, second one wont continue installing rom above 12%. awesome hardware warranty service.
wow they upgraded you to a tilt, thats amazing
warranty
as long as the phone isnt in more than one piece and the liquid indicator under the battery is white there should be no problem. Keep this in mind also. It all really depends on who receives it when you send it in. Everyone views physical damage, wear and tear, etc in their own terms even though there is a standard measure for it. Some let things go and others will say that a wear and tear scratch is damage. Generally you can get away with a bit as long as the phone doesnt look like a dog to it. No broken screens. No screens with pressure cracks (internal cracks). The screen is usually the biggie.
when i first got my kaiser i joined this site.. days later i BRICKED my phone, i had all types of apps and crap on my ppc. SO i went over to my original at&t shop and the dude called my bluff of "i dunno why, its not working". So i took my device and the next day went to another at&t shop with my brother. I walked in flirted my ass off with the ugliest sales rep i found.. and man this chick was beastly, and was able to swap out my device and get a new 512mb mem. card .. with no problem. i didnt even have a reciept, i just talked my way thru and SHAZAM!
Hi guys, I was wondering if any of you guys know how to fix this problem with the keyboard not working after sliding the screen completely open and I say completely open because when I open it half through the touch screen will work but only when the screen is completely open so I can use the keyboard is when it stops working. It also works when in landscape mode but the device has to be closed otherwise it's not working. Any help will be much appreciated and thank you in advance.
are you running a hero rom?
Yes I am but actually this happened before I flashed hero on the phone I first had this problem when the phone was on JF 1.51
dont know exactly what the problem might be but it sounds like a hardware issue, you should return it
I'm gonna just keep trying if after a week I can't get it fixed ill considered returning it. Is there an easy way to go factory/stock mode because if they find out my phone is rooted they're going to void any warranty the phone may have

also since we are on this topic, does anyone know if tmobile checks IMEI on warranty exchanges, or do they just see if the phone is up for warranty exchange still. i am wanting to swap my spare g1 with a new one since the speaker is out on it and some of the keys dont work, but i dont want to run into problems at tmobile. Thanks guys!
I had warranty devices shipped out to me, perhaps 20 times. They only asked me to confirm the IMEI, maybe 4 times, out of 20. Asurion on the other hand, has always asked to confirm the IMEI on all phone claims etc...
As far as them checking the IMEI in the warehouse once the Phone is returned, I have no idea. I have yet to return a phone whos IMEI's didnt match. Sorry.
Goodluck tho.

nah thats messed up, but it is clever!
had given my phone to sony ericsson for repairs because of the cracks and i got it back unrepaired and it says ''Tampered unit: Software in phone has been tampered. This voids warranty.''I had put the orignal 6.1 rom on the phone before i had sent it to them but it still says it has been tampered. How did they know?i called them and i am got another RMA number and am gonna send it to them again.what should i do differently this time.any help would be greatly appreciated.
stock SPL?
mayb thats it,let me try to reflash stock spl..thx
let's hope they didn't put your imei number on file and won't remember your phone came in before.
Yea if they got a record of your phone being tampered your screwed >.<
it seems like its all luck if you get RMA'd or not....I sent it in the first time around with a custom rom and everything and they replaced it.
Guys,
I'm on my 2nd X1a and just noticed a crack this morning. Got an RMA number to send in for service. The first time around, I just restored stock ROM and sent it to PTS Electronics and they sent me a replacement phone after about 2 months.
I noticed this post and I am planning on restoring stock SPL, but is it possible HardSPL again in case I get the same phone back?
Thanks for the input.
yes of course it is.

they do have my imei number on file but i basically argued with the manager on the phone and pretended to know nothing about hacking and stuff, and convinced him that it could just have been a one off case on their end.so hopefully lets hope for the best this time.

Wait two months for them to do something about it? Damn I just sent mine in ...
I had send my soft-modded X1 two times to service because cracked case:
First time: No problem with HardSPL and WM6.5, case replaced on warranty
Second time: Warrenty void because of HardSPL, no replace.
I called the X1-support, and they told me, if i flash the original bootloader and WM6.1, then a repair on warranty is possible. They also sad, the first time i was lucky. So i did restore it and send it in one week ago. Let's hope the best!
I will send mine this monday. They are saying that its going to be evaluated and see if it get coverd under warranty or i have to pay. Damn cracks.
Most likely they will make me pay. But i'm hoping they'll cover it.
Didn't the HTC Vivid come out in November 2011? If so I should have some type of warranty still right? I have original box, and have registered the imei under my account. The screen has 3 black dots 1cm apart from each other, in 5 places in the middle of the screen in perfect lines. Also, it has blue splotches in 3 or 4 spots.
Person sold it to me claimed it was almost brand new and it looks to be in great shape other then the screen (Was outside, didn't see the pixels until I got home.)
Any advice? I called my local AT&T store today and the guy didn't even know when the phone came out to check if it was still under warranty. I am wondering if I should contact HTC directly or if calling 611 (AT&T) would result in better luck.
I love the phone so I want to keep it and get it fixed.
Check if it's S-OFF or has an unlocked bootloader. An unlocked bootloader (or relocked) may void the warranty, but since the guy said that it was almost brand new, everything's probably the way it came out of the box (but check anyways!). Also, call the guy you bought it off of about the screen. If the screen was defective to begin with, then it should be covered under warranty. HTC's policy doesn't cover problems caused by wear and tear or physical damage.
Don't forget that you'll need the original proof of purchase for your claim. If you don't have it, call the guy to see if you can obtain it. It's worth reading HTC's warranty statement for any small details.
So yes, your phone may be covered under the warranty, although there are a few things you'll need to get and check.
I hope this helps!
You might be in luck. Sometimes the warranty follows the device and now the original owner, doesn't hurt to try even without proof of purchase.
Also, we need to check to make sure your phone isn't tampered with so warranty will go smoothly. Turn off your device, pull the battery, put battery back in, hold the power button while holding the volume down button. On that screen, let us know if it says "locked", "unlocked", or "relocked" and also "S-OFF" or "S-ON". If it is locked and S-ON then you are good to go.
Well im a flash addict and first thing I did was unlock bootloader and flash a Rom. It's still s-on and I know I can relock the bootloader but I assume they can see its been relocked.
It was a girl who sold it to me and she isn't very helpful and I believe she knew it was messed up and didn't tell me. Also she drove 35 minutes to meet me. Maybe she will respond to my VM / text but probably not.
It has had the highest end otterbox on it from day 1 (supposedly) and it has 0 scratches and actually looks brand new minus the screen.
When I get home from work ill upload a high res pic of the screen. The pixels are perfectly aligned all the way down the screen. Idk how someone could break it themselves and the dead spots be so perfectly aligned.

I've heard multiple stories where people's phones were unlocked and even S-OFF and HTC either didn't care or didn't look. Go ahead and re-lock the bootloader and then run your carriers RUU to get back to stock. Your issue a hardware related one. Therefore I can't possibly see a software tampering (unlocking bootloader) voiding the warranty for a hardware related issue.
any luck OP?
Hi Guys
So, I'm going to send my phone back to HTC as it's only a little under 3 months old ... Can someone advise me on their experiences with sending back to HTC for repair in the UK? I'm on Hboot 1.54 so I'm unable to go S-Off and remove the tampered flag or change my bootloader to locked instead of relocked. I can wipe it all, flash stock ROM, install stock recovery and relock my bootloader but that's about it ... I assume it shouldn't be an issue, hopefully, as the device is faulty, not due to me unlocking the bootloader and flashing ROMs so my warranty should be ok
The guy on the phone when I booked it in said I should be fine as the issue has nothing to do with me unlocking the bootloader, but I was looking for any of your experiences in the UK
Cheers

The camera is faulty, it has lost focus unless you are doing a macro shot, all other shots are blurred. It also has what looks like a large area of screen bleed just at the top of the display (under the sensors and speaker grill).
hey
imalso sending mine in for a replacement now as its been in 3 times already for faulty loud speakers. each time it was returned with the same fault, they had repaired things that didnt need replacing.
anyway im also on the new hboot with android 4.2.2 installed/ i restored from backup.
im gona send mine back with a flat battery and hope they dont charge it as it has had its bootloader relocked

Lol, I'm sure they'll be able to tell but hopefully it won't be an issue for us as they're faults not caused by unlocking the bootloader ... You say you're on your third, was your bootloader unlocked on the others you sent back?

No mate I was on the lower hboot with s-off. I relocked and romoved the re locked tag when sending it back. It came back updated.
Was in 2 minds wether to root again and unlock bootloader but I really didn't expect to have the fault again.
Can see em not exchanging now u watch

Ahhh, hopefully it won't be a problem, if they refuse I'll not be happy because the faults have nothing to do with unlocking the bootloader so it's irrelevant ... the guy I spoke to said if they didn't do it under warranty then they'd quote me or charge me £25 to return my phone to me. that's just bo**cks tbh. I paid £489 for the phone, I've had it less than 3 months and it's faulty so me unlocking the bootloader to remove the garbage they filled my phone with is just not on.
Fingers crossed we have no issues otherwise I'll be unsure what my options are, who to complain to or whatever ... I'd certainly never buy an HTC phone again if they don't sort it out under warranty, I could understand if something I'd done had caused the screen to bleed because it's not sealed correctly under the speaker grill, or if I'd somehow damaged the camera but that's not the case.
There must be some more people on here that's sent a phone back to HTC in the UK?
