speedtest.net app - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was curious as to was speeds people are getting when running this app.
On zen's mytouch rom I consistently get >1200 kbps down while on the sprint rom I am getting < 850 kbps down...
On both I get about 600-700 kbps up
I don't understand because I didn't think a rom would affect data speeds.
Can people post their speeds, and if any devs have insight on why the significant speed difference, please enlighten me.

Id expect to see this in dev from a noob, but I certainly didn't expect to see this from you Looney.

thanks... brain fart on my part

it varies pretty greatly but highest was 1452 up and 765 down.
lowest was 456 down and 531 up.

I've always gotten great speed here in Atlanta. I am using Zen's rom and it seems once I switched to this rom, my speeds increased dramatically from the sprint release rom for 2.1.
2151 Down and 646 Up Highest
1751 Down and 711 Up Lowest

I'm getting constant 1400 d/l and 8 - 900 u/l on Zen's ROM

Here in Austin, I probably average around 1000 up and 600 down.
I have a question. What does everyone get on wi-fi? I ask because my wi-fi is never any faster than my 3G. I've always wondered if there is something wrong with the wi-fi on my phone, because I believe it should be much faster.
Wi-fi speed examples anybody?

On 3g in Kansas City I got 1099/730, and on wi-fi I got 3033/559.

OK, moved out of my basement, and now I got 2002/667 on 3g, 2951/551 on wi-fi. My broadband is capped at 512 up.

I think you are confusing FPS (Frames Per Second that Neocore gives you) with MFLOPS (Million Floating-Point Operations Per Second). Your Hero can get as high as maybe 5.4 MFLOPS, at least that is the fastest I have seen.
All of these are arbitrary measurements that probably mean very little. it is easy to get caught up in it. I run CM6 and consistently get 4.7 MFLOPS at the stock 691 overclocking. If you hero can tolerate faster processor speeds, it will go higher.

On 3g, average of 4mbps download and 2.5mbps upload. Never test edge because I never feel the need to switch bands.
On wifi, I go between 18 and 23mbps down and 15 to 18mbps up.
I'll throw another one in here. FCC test from the market. It's the one I use.
A word of caution
Reg: Data Usage
App: Speed Test
Avg data usage per test: ~6MB
Audience: For people with "limited" data on.
I was puzzled to see I had close to 150 MB data consumed last noon. I was sure I wasn't downloading anything at that and all I was doing was trying out modems. Today morning I realized I was using the SpeedTest app to test the modem at that time. So I made a couple of tests using the app, using the 3G watchdog app to keep tab on data. It kinda shocked me to notice that this app was using ~6MB per test! That explains my data usage y'day. I had done more than 20 tests, to say the least, in less than an hour y'day. And then many more tests during the day and even late into night.
So now u r all warned if u r on limited plan. As for me, I am on the 2GB plan, and well, these speed tests cost me close to 300MB in just one day, y'day.

Sent from my phone
It's case by case. The speed is related to your phone +ROM+ modem + environment. That's one of the reasons why there are so many (ROM, modem, kernel) combinations out there. We all look forward to the release of AT&T's Froyo source such that developers can come up with an universal solution for all.

Using the speedtest.net app, the max speed that can be reached (stable) is around 10mbps, but it flickers up to around 13mbps (unstable). And using the FCC app, it runs the exact same test as speedtest, but it has a a higher max speed and it allows me to get an accurate result.
FCC test seems to provide more stable results on my Captivate.
Speedtest.net halts while testing the upload speed under several different ROM/modem/kernel combinations.
So I've been using Fcc test.. should you set the server to the nearest location? Is that the best?
Sent from my phone
Yea, gives you better results since you're transferring data from point A to point B and back, instead of going from point A to point J and back.

[MOD][AT&T/GSM/HSPA+] Editing Build.prop for better network speeds

ok so I know there are some threads out there for editing the build.prop to gain faster speeds. after messing around for a long time and doing a lot of research i believe I have found some suitable numbers and i have noticed a significant increase in my speeds. Some as high as 14 mbps down and 1.05 mbps up. I am on AT&T so i have no idea what effect this will have on other networks. I was pretty much feeling like i was on edge so i did a lot searching to figure this out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-S...cess#HSDPA_User_Equipment_.28UE.29_categories i looked through this to see if i could decipher these categories.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982082 this is the original thread that got me started on this and i just went through and tested numbers until i got steady results and nothing blew up. a lot of people tried a lot of different values but these are the ones that worked for me.
So finally i came to the following edits for the vivid on AT&T
first if you dont know how to edit the build.prop do some searching then come back. its fairly easy but you can royally screw up so be careful and i take no responsibility for whatever you change. this is what worked for me.
once you are able to edit the build.prop
you are going to change the values at the very top to the values in the first screenshot that are marked
after you change those scroll down until you see the section that matches the second screenshot and change them. they are exactly the same as the above
finally reboot your device a couple times to make sure they stick and make sure you do a speed test before so you can compare the after. if things dont work out your old build.prop should be saved as a .bak . I have attached a screenshot of my new data speeds. i dont use my wifi anymore.
Again these worked for me and i cannot say that they will work for you. i am not responsible for what may happen if you edit the wrong properties as i clearly marked the ones you need to change. be warned but if you are feeling brave give it a shot.
I also have fairly good coverage in my area so this is not going to miraculously make your signal better but my speeds doubled. as you can see in the final screenshot.
Re: Editing Build.prop for better speeds (AT&T)
OK so I've played around more and made a few more changes one is the default mode. I switched it to gsm/cdma and throttling is the other. The default value is 1 and I changed it to 0 and have yet to see what it does exactly as there is very little on it. But my speeds have stayed fast and my reception seems strong. I am still researching the throttling value . I have attached a screenshot with the new values to change.

Re: Editing Build.prop for better speeds (AT&T)
So I've been messing around and changed my APN settings for att my speeds are stupid fast now i use this setup I use on aosp ROMs
APN name: AT&T LTE
APN: pta
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN type: default,agps,supl,hipri,internet
Make sure there are no spaces
You also need to set up one for MMS
APN name: AT&T LTE MMS
APN: pta
Mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port:80
Mcc:310
MNC:410
APN type hipri.mms
This has all the speeds up to lte as long as you are in an area
My speeds I just checked on lte were 28 down and 8 up that's faster than most WiFi.
I've never gotten those before with the stock vivid settings. Again this is only for att but the build.prop mod should work for any carrier

I can confirm a significant speed boost:
5 tests performed beforehand showed speeds generally at or less than 1000 kB/s, dipping down to as low as 688 kB/s
5 tests performed afterwards showed speeds consistently at or higher than 1100 kB/s, reaching 1500 kB/s
Upload speeds are, on average, more than doubled.
Latency (ping) is consistently low. This is all on a relatively weak connection, too (one bar).
Thanks, zippox.

ok so I tried the tweaks in the build.prop and I switched my one x out of LTE mode to HSPA and set the speed test app to better performance.
I tested this at 4:45PM and got these results:
1st test: 5 Bars with -67dbm, 6.65mbps down-0.99 mbps up
2nd test: 5 Bars with -67dbm, 9.03mbps down-1.05 mbps up
3rd test: 5 bars with -69dbm, 8.75mbps down-1.01 mbps up
Test's show 9.03mbps as my peak but that's probably due to a fair amount of network traffic around the 4PM hour. I will test again at 12 AM and 1 AM to see if there is a difference and will report back tomorrow.

How to get 6+ Hours screen on time!

ok so to do this you have to have a rooted phone and maybe custom rom for certain tips
1) not everyone will want to do this but, for me I mainly use my phone for things like facebook, chrome, texting, instagram social stuff and to be honest the proccesor at 2,2ghz in unnecessary for these apps, I would recommend people like me use the app 'setcpu' and underclock the phone to run at 1.2-1.5Ghz, i don't see any slow down! you can set things to change for example 'if gets below 10% it will allow you to underclock more to save battery' or if 'certain apps open it will fasten'
2) custom rom, use smart 3g, this will turn your phone to 2g when phones screen is off so you still get notification but is'nt draining as much battery
any more tips reply and ill add!
Could you give more details about your personal setup, like what ROM do you use and so on?!?

I guess the CPU speed shouldn't matter since the nexus 4 is still butter smooth running at that speed.

I suppose really the claim in the OP is that these settings will give you over 6 hours screen on time. You're right that it will help some people, but it also will not help others. Perhaps a better thread title would be to state that these are tips to increase screen on time.

I've been averaging 5hours with LTE on all day one gmail account syncing email only. 2hours of Pandora various browsing on xda, eocf, overclockers forum, Facebook via browser about 20minutes of voice calls, gtalk all day with the wife, etc, etc. This is with every ROM I've run so far all with stock CPU settings. Also, currently running the linaro ROM with the linaro Franco kernel and the moto x dalvik patch extremely debloated.
This thread is pretty helpful to me. If you don't find it helpful, it's not required reading.
I'm considering setting up a Tasker profile to manage CPU speed. However, I'm trying to get an understanding of default behavior before I go changing it. I've been checking CPU range with ROM toolbox and the max seems to be changing. I'm assuming that this is due to throttling.
If that's correct, what is the absolute max set to by default?

sour grapes... it will help some ppl, not others... which goes for just about every thread at XDA.
I'd much rather see "partially helpful" threads than not. I can pick and choose which apply to me, rather than not seeing them at all.
Instead of using the steps in the OP, I just use DS Battery Saver and Greenify. It's that easy.
My battery life doubled when I knocked down the screen brightness from 2/3 to about 1/3. The screen is still plenty bright at that setting, and the battery is much, much better.
Yes brightness is a big help. I use "display brightness" which puts an invisible slider up the left edge of my phone screen so I can manually adjust to my liking

Just fyi, your phone does not run that speeds at all time. You can also lower the minimum frequency and it will help alot. Lowering mine from 1100 to 600 helped a lot.
