So far it seems very stable. Much more consistent than the JL1 modem which never worked really well for me.

whats so great about this? is it good on performance or battery or maybe both?

Just installed for ten minutes and went back to jl1. Signal wasnt as good and browser noticably slower. Running axura 2.2

Flashed 30 min ago have a more stable connection than using the JL1, obsidian 4.2

so far it seems the best froyo modem is JK6/
:S

Seems to be giving better lock on gps, even locks indoors. Think I like this more than JL1 on nero v3 beta. Thxs

I installed overnight... Page load time on sites are DEFINITELY slower. Still evaluating for battery life and call quality....

HOLY CRAP BATMAN!
I am running Nero v1 + Super I/O + the JL4 modem. First time ever: speed test:
5.06 MB/s Down, 1.54 MB/s up
Just before that I was at
2.67 MB/s Down, 0.54 MB/s up

Where are you located? Are you located near an HSPA+ tower? I get around 1.5down most of the time here in NJ...

Going to give a try, i usually get about 4.5 mb/s down and about .50 up... ill let ya know if this gives me a boost. oh btw im in orlando FL.
Edit: after this modem i ran speed test and got 5.72 mbps down and 0.61 mbps up... honestly not too diff from what i get normally. I love tmobile.

flashed.
Did speedtest before and after.
Before: 600+
After: 1200+
yay.
:|

confirmed on axura 2.2 it really doesnt help. possibly better on the east coast. but west coast no. went back to JL1

Also running nero v1 and jl1 modem. Did not like that modem. I have another vibrant here (wifes) and its on jk2 and it was much more consistent and seemed to have better call clarity. Just updated JL4 and speeds seem more stable. Speeds vary, but I just now got one of my highest scores from speedtest.net ever.... 5.92 down ...
So far its better for me ...HSPA TMOB

better 3g speed
Giving better 3g speed in comparison to JL1

speedtest.net app

Was curious as to was speeds people are getting when running this app.
On zen's mytouch rom I consistently get >1200 kbps down while on the sprint rom I am getting < 850 kbps down...
On both I get about 600-700 kbps up
I don't understand because I didn't think a rom would affect data speeds.
Can people post their speeds, and if any devs have insight on why the significant speed difference, please enlighten me.
Id expect to see this in dev from a noob, but I certainly didn't expect to see this from you Looney.

thanks... brain fart on my part
it varies pretty greatly but highest was 1452 up and 765 down.
lowest was 456 down and 531 up.
I've always gotten great speed here in Atlanta. I am using Zen's rom and it seems once I switched to this rom, my speeds increased dramatically from the sprint release rom for 2.1.
2151 Down and 646 Up Highest
1751 Down and 711 Up Lowest
I'm getting constant 1400 d/l and 8 - 900 u/l on Zen's ROM

Here in Austin, I probably average around 1000 up and 600 down.
I have a question. What does everyone get on wi-fi? I ask because my wi-fi is never any faster than my 3G. I've always wondered if there is something wrong with the wi-fi on my phone, because I believe it should be much faster.
Wi-fi speed examples anybody?
On 3g in Kansas City I got 1099/730, and on wi-fi I got 3033/559.

What is the fastest ROM?

I am getting annoyed with the speed of my Sprint Hero. the lag on the dialer is really annoying me, I hit dial and wait 5-10 seconds before the phone actually dials then it does the stupid vibrate after the call is ringing already.
Sometimes I think i did not hit the call button so i hit it again, and nothing happens for a while then suddenly I get 2 calls going at the same time to the same person.
I am rooted and running a 2.1ROM but I forgot which one, but it doesnt have any special features besides the super user app and htc sense.
Im willing to settle for something with out sense as long as it speeds up the phone.
I am even considering if its possible to unroot and to whatever 2.1 version sprint has out now and hope it fixes things.
Please let me know which ROM I should try, I dont care about sense, live wallpapers, special animations, just make the phone quicker.
cyanogen 2.2 mod is the best...overclock it to 768
Well, I assure you that using stock 2.1 will *not* fix your problems, especially lag issues. Better to stick to modded ROMs, to be honest.
After trying a few ROMs, I came to love ZenEXP. And with the 0.9.7 release that just came out, it seems like things have gotten even faster. You're rooted, so... do a nand backup, and give it a shot. Try Cyanogen too, as the last person said.

Please note that not every Hero will tolerate 768 on the processor. Really, seems only a select few can run it without stability issues. Mine will freeze instantly if set any higher than 710. This is why the new CM6 is clocked at 691, so everyone can boot it, and so it is rock solid. If you can get 768, then you are one of the lucky ones!

How do you get it to 768? I'm using setCPU and it peaks at 528
My max is 678.. but I put it at 652. Should I just max it out at 678?
Never mind its 691.. I maxed it.. I wont have a problem with battery overheating right?

The app that you use to manage your OC speed doesn't determine how fast your processor will actually run, it's all based on the kernel embedded (or flashed) onto your phone. If you're running stock 2.1 then SetCPU will only show your max speed as 528mhz because that's how fast the stock kernel is. Other ROMs like DarchDroid and CM6 have kernels that boost the max speed to over 700mhz. If you install one of those then you'll see massive speed improvements to your phone and with SetCPU you can either leave the kernel to allow for maximum speed or you can throttle it down if your phone becomes unstable and can't handle it.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I'm running the stock 2.1 atm because I haven't found a rom that combines both live wallpapers and multitouch yet. I play games on my phone often, probably too often, and I have to be able to use two fingers. The live wallpaper thing is just because I think it looks really cool, especially that mario one.

Tweak Tool (based on battery tweak) Set to be released running on almost any android phone later this year (with tons of new features, I attached a little sneak preview (subject to change blah blah blah))
Also I've never gotten good battery life with setcpu, with tweak tool I'm getting about 2-3 day life. That's good right?

You would technically get the same results if you set the battery tweak up in the same fashion
Perhaps it is because I always used a preset on battery tweak rather than customizing it...
On set CPU what should I have the scaling set to? They default to on demand, however, do I want to set the screen off profile to power save?

Pro/Con of Captivate ROMs v. i9000 ROMs

So, I've had a flash itch for a while courtesy of S7 reaching EoL and having been on Apex for the last month or two. Now that 2.3.4 is available on both the Captivate and i9000 platforms, can somebody enumerate the pros and cons of going with one over the other? I'm starting with what I know.
Captivate ROMs
Pros
Audience chip
Cons
No HSUPA
No Voodoo sound/colour
i9000 ROMs
Pros
HSUPA
More variety of ROMs/kernels/modems
Voodoo sound/colour
OC/UV
Cons
Not native to the device
very good question,I also have been looking at them and considering this and whether there is anything different about flashing one of those roms
I've not had bad experiences with either, but here is my two cents worth...
I prefer the Captivate ROMs, for the following reasons...
1. Stable. As I Swype this, it has been four days without a restart, and not one FC (Cognition5v2).
2. Audience Chip. It is a small thing, I know, but this is a phone, and call quality counts.
3. Voodoo Sound. Yeah, I paid for the app, and was happy to do it. Simone is doing some fine work and deserves to be compensated.
4. Overclock. Tegrak. Couple bucks. give it up for 2400 Quadrant scores.

Forgot 5....
What is so special about HSUPA vs HSDPA? I have HSDPA, and it seems to be more than OK, even way out in the boonies where I live.

The U in HSUPA is for upload. If you run a speedtest on HSDPA your upload will be closer to 300kbps whereas HSUPA will be more like 1000kbps. Theoretically this means faster web browsing because it can send the requests faster to get the download faster.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate
Correct, HSUPA downloads at the same speed as HSDPA, but has higher theoretical upload rates. Since most web site requests will fit in a packet or two, UPA does not have much advantage for browsing, but is noticeably faster for things like uploading photos. I generally reserve that kind of stuff until I find a wifi hotspot.
Again, this is just my opinion, but the i897 ROMs have a slight edge in stability and call quality on the Captivate. I do wish we had more source for kernels, but with the Tegrak and Voodoo stand-alone apps, I'm happy.
Sent from my Cappy using Swype and my finger.
I have hacked my phone to get 5 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up just 4 yahh to know;D
MIUI is 2.3.5 and has HSPA becuase it runs an I9000 modem
thr ROM itself has nothing to do with the Modem, atleast wether it has HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA.
Voodoo sound and color is available for MIUI/CM7
And also voodoo sound is available on every device, it hacks the audio driver/and files that run it .

I don't understand how you can get scores like that on stock KH3. Did KH3 implement EXT4? My max score on any stock ROM was just under 1000. The single biggest factor in jumping up my scores was to go to a EXT4 ROM, even OC did not have as much effect.

Quadrant is pretty garbage imo. I keep seeing videos on youtube of 2 phones starting quadrant at the same time, 1 phone finishing 5-10 seconds ahead of the other but still losing the benchmark #'s with most results (fps in the testing) appearing the same. If it was decent the faster phone would always get the higher benchmark, 2 phones render 1k frames, phone 1 in 10 seconds, phone 2 in 20, fps on phone 1 must be higher... etc etc I'd try maybe smartbench or glbenchmark
