Sorry - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i got my g1, ive rooted it and all that, so now i want to flash a custom rom on it. i actually flashed one, and it worked, but the theme of the rom is not on my g1? is there a reason why? all i did was put it on the sd card, boot it up in recovery mode and install it from there. Now i want to install another rom with a cool theme, but all the roms in the development sections dont have pics?

Most roms do not require screenshots because everyone knows what the basic Android system looks like. Why waste time and space posting screenshots that looks like every other rom and what you already have on your device (by default).
I think what you should consider is flashing a basic rom and then look for a theme that supports it. A can be anywhere between 35mb to 130mb in size. Most themes are only around 5mb to 20mb depending on what is included.

How do i remove the themes?

Hi i love all the themes and mods on here. I keep trying them all.
One question though?
How do i remove what i install. At the moment i`m having ro reinstall my MCR everytime i want to go back to how my phone was before.
If you make an Update of MCR, the Theme ist still original.
You must du nothing else.
Ok, only thing is i dont have an update file on there. I wiped my memory card last night and i cant remember how i got the update zip on there or where from.
go to modaco and download it again?
i`m getting confused here. My phone is rooted, and i have the modded custom recovery image on there. But i dont have an update zip file on my sd card. Like i say i have to reinstall the MCR 2.9 zip file to remove the modded themes im installing.
Do i need the update file on my sd card?
Is this all i need to do to install the original theme?
There are two Ways to get the original Theme:
First and easiest ist to reload the MoDaCo Rom from this Page an copy that to your SD Card and Install it new. Then you have the original Theme.
Second is to look here in this Forum. In one Theme Thread is a Download Link for the Original Theme.
First way is the easiest way.
just install the mcr as you did before, if you deleted the update.zip you need to copy it again to your sdcard like you did before. just make sure you use the same rom as before, then everything will be as before.
Right so what your all saying is reload my Modaco Rom again.
Thats the best way then?
Well its the way ive been doing it anyway.
Hoped there was an easier or quicker way.
Thanks everyone for your advice and help.

Help with Cyanogen and modding

Ok, i have a need for a bit of help. I rooted and flashed to Jesusfreaks adp. I tried to get it to RC33. LONG story short, JF is installed. My kernel is 2.6.27-00392-g8312baf
NO clue what that means but im at fireware 1.5 and Build number CRB43
I want to get to Cyanogen. It looks a little smoother then JF and more frequently update. BTWi have a G1
I followed this guide TO THE T!
simplehelp.net/2009/10/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-4-1-99-on-your-g1-android-phone/
and after i rebooted, it took forever to boot (which is usual)
All my apps crashed. My desktop didnt even load. It had force closes like *android.phone and *android.mail
I figured it was because i was trying to mod off of the Jesus freak setup. Can anyone help me out and tell me how to either COMPLETELY wipe my phone and restore it to its origional G1 official build and then i can re-root to Cyanogen OR a way to mod from Jesusfreak to Cyanogen
copy and paste this into your browser... follow the directions...
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod[/url]
Just read that guide over and thats all exactly what i already did. I have tried to signed-dream flash and then after taht the cyan mod. It installed the OS no problem. It just didnt have any programs working. IT is as if the phone had the OS but no program files. It wouldnt even load the phone at all. it was a black screen with a status bar and infinate force close screens. Any idea what that is a result of? I had to flash recover back to my JF os
Try this:
1. Flash recovery Amon_Ra (Great improvment on JF and Cyans recovery)
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
select console from the menu
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
2. Boot into recovery (Home+Power)
3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4. Wipe EXT
5. Repair EXT
6. Flash Super D (I suggest Super D only because there is less flashing involved and it's a great improvement on the Cyan roms.. super quick too)
From here you should be set.
so if i already have root and all that, do i still need to follow step 1? Like flash with Amon_Ra? or can i just wipe, and reload the D rom? also your rom says its myHero2.2? is that a good rom? Im just trying to find the best rom to use on a g1. I have read up on Jesusfreak, its very stable, but it is pretty much just a open version of the regular tmobile os. THe only difference is the apps store is an older version. In your opinion, what is the best G1 rom and what are its percs?
thanks for all your help. This has been a working progress haha, finding a good rom and sticking with it. and can you give me a list of all the files needed for the best rom? if they have a step by step guide to it, thatd be great! i would look myself, but im still new at all this and there are like a bajillion different roms/ ways to load the rom. Im a PSP hacker, not an experienced phone guru

I would just so you're current on your recovery. The updated recovery has added features compared to JF's recovery

I would load the new recovery and then flash Super D. Again it's the most stable and is wicked fast. Yeah used to use myHero2.2 but i haven't updated my sig in a while. It's getting mundane at this point.

This is going to be more of a difficult question to answer. It just depends on what you're after. I really prefer Super D because of it's speed. Again its built from the Cyan roms so you get Cyan + extras. That's what I would go with. Simple, easy, and fast.

Well that's the cool part about the community here at XDA. All the files are set up for you. To flash a rom:
Code:
Download the .zip file and place it on the root of your sd card
Reboot into recovery
Make a backup (i prefer switchrom)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe EXT
Repair EXT
Flash rom from .zip
Reboot.
It's that easy.

[Q] Question about Morphs

So i finally decided to root (hurray), but i'd like to remain on stock. All i really want to change is the notification bar using a metamorph. Will this work? All the metamorphs say they will work with CM or Modaco or whatever but none say stock? I'm new to rooting (i've been perfectly content with stock up until now) and just had this question thanks.
Oh one more question while im at it. I've heard the term nandroid alot, but all i seem to find on that is the Rom Manager app? Can anyone shed some light on this? I know its a backup but i don't know how to make one or what to use to restore them.
-Cheers
I think morph only works with deodexed rom, I'm still searching this as well. I'm in the same boat as yours, still in stock rom, stock recovery but rooted.
Nandroid backup accessible from custom recovery
nandroid is a nand (memory) backup tool that works from recovery. It essentially takes a snapshot of your system that you can restore at a later date.
To theme/morph your phone you will need a deodexed rom... there are few around, including mine (Kang-o-rama 0.9). My later rom (v1.0) is based on CM6 so be aware of the differences.
well i was looking at doing that simple kinda one click root app, then do the rom manager. but how do you resotre a backup from rom manager if your rom breaks or everything FC's?

you bot into recovery and restore your nand backup if for some reason you totally trash your working ROM, whcih i just did 2 days ago! but if you having a working ROM and just want to flash another ROM, using ROM manager is a gift from god. its very easy to use it
to answer your question, yes you have to be using a deodexed ROM. and there is a stock froyo ROM that is deodexed, there's a thread dedicated to it somewhere around here. just flash that ROM and theme away. the first thing i always do is switch to a black status bar with meta morph. i finally have a theme zip file with things exactly how i want, my fav circle battery icons, fav wifi icons, pure black status bar. it sits on my sd card and i always flash it immediately.

but does rom manager use nandroid? im a bit lost on this. When i make a backup in rom manager is that a nandroid? do i boot into recovery and restore that backup from rom manager?
Thanks for helping, you wouldnt happen to know which rom that is, that looks stock?
Yes ROM manager uses nand backup. It just automates it for you. I don't have the link to the ROM but it is stock with busy box, deodexed, etc. You'll have to browse the threads, its near the first few pages.
The thread I was thinking about is titled:
Re: [ROM] FRF91 Stock, Deodexed, rooted, busybox, battery %, TB alert/wake/unlock 8/4/10

[Q] help with market.

OK so I have been flashing the new Roms on my phone for a long time now and recently I've noticed that the market doesn't work on the newer Roms. If I go to the market and try to download something it will just say downloadIng and will stay that way. I had to keep an old version of a Rodriguez Rom on my phone, flash back to that, update my apps and then back them up to put them on the newer Roms. Long story short, the market doesn't work for me on newer Roms. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
What new rom? You doing full wipe when going from one rom to the next?

all of them. Well the Miui Roms. Cyan is the only Rom that doesn't do it. And I do wipe. 5 times like it says. Still doesn't work.
Possibly a sign of corrupt data on the SD. Try running ScanDisc from your PC on the SD card, and fixing any errors...

[Q] reached brickwall with themes

hi.
i've had a galaxy i9000 for a few weeks now and today i decided to root the thing so i could try some sick themes.
rooting went fine, it's all done properly (i think...).
i got metamorph and tried to install this theme:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726912
after a bit of persuasion, i got the phone to install it successfully, or so i thought. it asked me to reboot, so i did, but there are no changes to the phone, the default theme is still active.
excuse the bluntness, but what the hell do i need to do to get a theme running? i've spent like 2 hours trawling the net reading about cyanogenmod, nandroid, busybox and metamorph and i'm possibly more confused than when i started.
cheers
The ROM you use needs to be De-Odexed
if you are running a stock ROM, then you will never get a theme installed.
there are many Custom Stock - De-Odexed ROMs out there, if you like the stock feel
You should probably have clockworkmod to install the themes too. You can get this by flashing a custom kernel. E.g speedmod for froyo or CFroot for Gingerbread(make sure you get the right version for your rom) and flash either one with odin, read up before flashing and make sure you have download and recovery modes.
So most themes require:
A deodexed rom
CWM to install the theme
I didnt realise you are on CM7 - its still early and i didnt wake up long ago.
anyway a CM7 ROM will be de-odexed so scrap my last post. I dont know if that version is compatible with your version of CM7, However there is a theme section for CM7 only, and thats in the themes and apps section.
also when i was running CM7 you dont need to flash the theme in recovery. You install it like an .apk and there is a built in theme manager app with CM7 - you look in there for your theme and then hit install
is that what you have been doing ??

ok.
well, i'm running froyo firmware v2.2 and kernal v2.6.32.9.
so, what apps exactly do i need from here? i have a rooted phone with superuser, rom manager, metamorph and busybox.
so damn confusing, every page of information i read just clutters me up. there seems to be a sea of different versions of everything that are all incompatible with each other.
all i want to do is install some different themes.
quick bump. so close to knowing what to do, just need someone to quickly explain!
i thought u was running cyanogenMod ??
anyway, is your froyo rom a custom rom ?? if so its as simple as flashing it in recovery

My advice:
Install CF root, install clockworkmod recovery, download the theme you want and place it in your internal sd card.Boot in recovery, choose zip from sd card, flash it,reboot ready.
the rom still needs to be de-odexed, if its a stock rom with a custom kernel it still wont work
ok, what the hell is CF?
I DLed the latest CM "nightly" whatever that means for my phone but havent installed it to my phone yet cause im not sure how.
as for being a custom ROM or whatever, the phone is basically stock outta the box apart from being rooted.
thats why themes wont work, your still on stock.
CF root is a kernel, which gives you 2e CWM recovery...
Cyanogen can be a little tricky to install so i would HIGHLY recommend you read the instructions 5 times plus. or get used to flashing simple custom roms first.
I agree, dont mess with cm or miui till you are competent flasher
Sent from gt i9000 insanity 8.5/fugumod
For me GingerReal or Simply Honey have been fairly simple to install. Just folow the instructions to the letter.
Then you can simply can flash any themes from CMW
