G1 not working very well anymore? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay, so i've had my G1 for about a year. i have played around with it a lot and as recently as a month or so it has been very snappy and responsive with SuperD rom as well as older (4.x) Cyanogen roms. i have flashed cyanogen 5 test-something (-2 maybe?) and didn't really like it, so i tried a couple of the other newer roms. now, it seems like no matter what rom i flash, it has serious lag and responsiveness problems. i have done complete wipes (partitioning the SD card to fat/fat32 only, wiping it completely with a disk wiping utility, re-partitioning with amon ra recovery, and wiping from amon ra recovery), i have installed both new and old roms, i have flashed old and new radios (i have had danger spl for a while), and nothing seems to help! i am getting the HTC Evo on Friday so i guess this doesnt really matter that much, but i am concerned that other people might be having this problem and if i give this phone to a family member or friend i would like it to be functioning as smoothly as possible. it seems like since my hardware hasnt changed, i should be able to wipe, flash my old setup and have nice snappy response time like i had before. right now it's like i open the web browser and load a page and then press the home hardware key and it takes about 5 seconds for the homescreen to load, even though all i have is four icons, the default background, and the power control widget. there used to be no lag at all with this same configuration (an older Super D rom). any suggestions?

i'll just say amen to that. my G1 just isn't what it used to be anymore. I just recently did a complete wipe including completely clearing and repartitioning the SD card and I didn't even bother reinstalling all my apps, i'm just reinstalling them as I find I need them... don't have a lot of widgets... things just aren't what they used to be anymore. i wish i could figure out why. and i'm in contract until NEXT july... so i'm gonna have to figure this out sooner than later.

Same here, but it got a lot faster as soon as I added overclock and removed beautiful widgets!

Agree with the others posted. I do not use beautiful widgets. So that was not the issue with me.
I have also noticed that my internet speeds with t-mobile have dropped in half for the last few months. They (t-mobile) do not provide any real help on that issue. I remember back in '08 a post being made that they will put people on low internet if they exceed the 1Gig download in a month. Has anyone every ran into that one?

I'm not that tech savvy or anything, but you guys do know that just about everything you flash to your phone says "Caution not responsible this will put your phone under major stress... wear and tear... blah blah blah"...
Mine did the exact same thing. I always just assumed that after trying to push it to it's very limit for so long it finally just gave up and couldnt go that far anymore.

This is true. My G1 is having weird problems. I have overclocked before, but not anymore. I think these problems started after I overclocked, or after I flashed the latest radio for the G1.
Developers just write that their ROMs will put the phone under stress just to warn people that their not at fault for their phone screwing up miserably somehow (like with the catastrophic Haykuro SPL... oooo ****, what a mess that was)
When the Haykuro SPL came out, I didn't immediately flash, even though I had the required radio already. I made a few posts in XDA verifying the steps so that I wouldn't **** my G1.
And clocking the G1 to 528 Mhz ISN'T OVERCLOCKING.... the processor was made to go up to that spec, HTC just kept the maximum clock in Android to 384 Mhz to save battery and prevent complaining customers.
The G1 should be able to write it's NAND over a thousand times... it's a flash memory chip, it was made for read/write. It won't get slower unless you really screw the crap out of it, for example, by applying more voltage to the damn thing.
Maybe I should re-flash the radio, the SPL, and erase and flash the recovery and everything else. Or maybe return it to complete stock and bring it back to rooted-ness... that can solve some small little mistake I possible made a while back, in the first months of G1 rooting...

Overclocking is great
But the G1 should still have the same performance as it did when it was manufactured. The CPU is the same, everything is the same. I don't know why it seems like the G1's performance is diminishing... maybe it's just our exposure to superior Android phones like the Motorola Droid or Nexus One?

For all of those that are complaining about their slow G1 devices on Cyan's 5.0.7 turn off swap and compcache. Confirm it with adb shell and type "free" to confirm that it's reading 0 for swap. Adjustments have been made so that you shouldn't need it anymore. Cyan has said himself that you would be digging a "swap grave" if you did. Also, I find it funny how a lot of people b!tch that the G1 won't be upgraded beyond Donut but clearly we can all see why. My suggestion is to turn off swap and compcache. Not good enough? Go back to stock or whatever you were happy with and stop complaining!
For the record I (like thousands of others) have 5.0.7 on my G1 (without swap or compcache) and it's been running fine. Overclocked and all. Using ADW Launcher with 7 screens filled with widgets and shortcuts. I was running it for 3 days straight with heavy usage before it rebooted on me. So I think that it's something that you're doing.

Everytime my G1 has acted up and no amount of recovery and sd card wiping seemed to help. What did help me out though was wiping from fastboot using the
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase system
commands. This will wipe everything in the phone (outside of the sd card).
It should actually perform the same wipe functions as the recovery program does, but I have had luck with this in the past.
BTW, I fried one of my older G1s overclocking it when Cyanogens roms first came on the scene. It just became completely unstable and would shut off randomly and frequently. Unless you've done some hardware damage due to stress or clumsiness, your G1 should be rock solid as Binary says.

Why does my G1 seem to get slower and slower
T-mobile G1 32B Bronze "PVT Dream"
Extended Life Battery and Cover
16 GB Class 6 Card, ext4 1024MB, linux-swap 512MB, remainder fat32, No Compcache, Apps2SD - "before GAPPS"
Cannon202 2.2.1 build, 2.1 firmware, 2.22.23.02, Tried w/wo cpu oc app and Cannon's original build is Superior, would not rec installing oc app at all. The clocking used in this builds kernel is smoking fast, yet made to be unstable imo in my tests against this build with the cpu overclocking app, customizable yet much slower, flakier, and noticeably unfavorable temp increase just holding it ...
My G1 is smoking fast, Great Signal Strength, Excellent wifi and 3G speeds. Things I've noticed in my journey into the "Custom Rom Universe."
1. All it takes is one file, app, or architectural flaw (ext234,Linux-swap,corrupted partitions, faulty cache etc...) - even slight - to destroy the Harmonious bond between software and hardware on any device.
2. Most new phones are coming with Class 2 removable storage from the OEM. A Class 4 card may suffice, but a Class 6 Card is mandatory. If there were faster I would say go even faster on the transfer rate. depending on the application, the Android OS will bounce to and from the SD Card a bunch and more often as more apps are installed (updates), cache, partitions, etc the faster the card the less the phone has to compensate against the slower transfer rates, thus better performance ...
3. Heat/Battery - I tied these together why? Heat from Over-clocking or even just Summer weather or the combination of the 2, kills batteries overall life and output. Not to mention the affect on all electronics from heat, the cooler the better I would assume. If your phone has a custom Rom another factor to take in consideration is the it's going to require more juice from the battery and the change in the amount of load across the board on the phone as it does any pc/mac or any other form of computing device is pull more power which can weaken, damage, or even kill the battery all together. It's amazing how much the integrity of the battery affects the overall performance.
("IMO") - I just thought I might add my 2 cents. The performance on my phone is outstanding and very stable and I have changed the architecture so many times ... I would be embarrassed and damn near ashamed to venture a guess and disclose that information . So like it says "In my opinion" it's alright to disagree . The point is to argue, not to be argumentative , but I thought this information might help someone. Sorry for the long post.

Have you tried putting a new class 6 MicroSD card in? That might be the problem. SD cards only last so long.

Phone hangs in sleep mode

Hello there,
I really am stumped, and would really like some help! I've searched the forums, can't really find what I'm after, so apologies if this as already been asked/answered.
Basically, my G1 hangs a lot when it goes to sleep. I'm running Cyanogen 4.0.4 with an 8Gb Class 6 card - everything was fine when I was using the stock 2Gb card that came with the phone, but after having loads of trouble trying to transfer my apps, I decided to just wipe and start again. The card is Ext2 parted with a 293Mb size partition. I did have it as Ext3, but thought this might be the problem (since I didn't have any problems with Ext2 on my old card), and wiped and repartitioned as Ext2 but that wasn't the case and problems persisted. Occasionally the phone will hang when it is on, but mostly the hanging happens when I leave it alone for a while; the screen stays dark and nothing happens, and I have to take the battery out and restart the whole phone.
One thing to note is that when I did reinstall everything, MybackupPro often didn't like the card, and gave me 'I/O problems with card' or 'Cannot install app' mesaages until I rebooted and started again each time the messages came up. I had to reinstall my apps in 10 - 20 app chunks in the end, rebooting when errors came up, but eventually I got everything reinstalled.
I'm running Swapper (I know Cyanogen does something similar natively, but wasn't sure how it worked...someone please correct me if I shouldn't be using it), and Overclock Widget. Like I said. I never had a single problem before with my old card and these apps, so this all leads me to think it may be the card, but any advice would be much appreciated!

Hmm... sounds like the card to me. And the fact that you are using swapper on a possible defective card may very well be causing your system to hang. The system is relying on the sdcard as part of it's memory. So if the cards fails at any point, so will your phone. It'll be like pulling the RAM module out of your computer while your using it. Include a logcat of the phone crashing if you can and post it. Also reformat and check the partition for errors.
Thanks for your advice, I thought it may be the card too. Partitions seems fine...I used Partition Manager and it didn't throw up any problems.
As for Logcat, I did try and do that, but got a bit stuck trying to fiddle with my computer, and I don't think it's going to happen. I'm a bit of a newbie I'm afraid.
I don't mind getting a new card, but the only thing I'm concerned about is moving my apps...on this post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=553469 it looked pretty easy, but could you tell me if these commands are to be executed in the terminal on the handset? Does it copy the apps, because I imagined that if you fiddled with stuff that's in use (like moving an app from the Ext2) would cause a lot of FCs and possibly even hangs.
odd hang
I myself am getting a bit of a hang when waking the phone up, i have to hit the menu button several times, kinda reminds me of the coma issue that we had back on the old kernal. i didn't have a problem till i clean out my phone by wiping and reformating my card, it is not that big off a deal but it is just strange. oh and to the op, you do not need to run openclocker since cyanogen's rom has cpu scaling that does it already and if you have your partions in order as fat, ext, swap than it will auto use compchace

My phone did the exact same thing when I was using either Jac's Hero 1.3 or cyanogenmod 4.0.1. I tried everything and it wouldn't go away so I ended up switching to xrom.
Since cyan has been doing a lot of kernal tweaks lately do you think that it is possible that the coma issue has gotten reintroduce though, I mean both mine and the op is doing it, his is worse but if you remember that is what was happening to a lot before, mine never got to the point of pulling the battery but to the point of annoyance just like it used to
How is the xrom <that's jac's non hero build, right?> is it comparable to cyanogen's, I love cyan's performance but if this persits, I might find something else for awhile
I love it honestly. He just updated it to 1.4r3 and its is sweet, it has a custom theme and it looks really good. The performance is great and I don't even use a swap with it. I tried cyan again when 4.0.3 came out and only used it for 2 days before switching back to xrom. Personally I liked the icons and lockscreen of xrom 1.3r3 better then 1.4r3 but that is just my opinion, If you want to try 1.3r3 I can send it to you since it's not up anymore. Try 1.4r3 first though and see what you think because IMO it is the best rom out. Hero is nice but no matter what you get some lag and after a week or to it gets slower so I don't use it yet, I try the new builds but never stick with them.
Yeah I feel the same way but the hero builds too, nice to play with but nowhere near usable for me, I might just have to check out the xrom but I don't wanna give up loccy's browser, it is just friggin sweet and it works good for me because of the option of viewing just destop versions of sites since I get the men's health daily newsletter and whenever I would click on a link it would give me the moble version and not the article I would like to read, if loccy's brower works on the xrom, we might just have a winner
I haven't tried it yet so I'm not sure. Is it just a simple .apk to install or do I need to push it?
I just read the thread on the browser and it says it should work on xrom. It says to push it but I have just installed it like a normal apk before
Yea I am downloading it right now so I will let you know how it goes. Just so you know the browser on xrom doesn't have those zoom in/out buttons that pop up when you touch it, also it has multi touch just no double tap to zoom. I don't see any settings for turning off mobile pages though.
Well I am downloading the xrom right now so I will be flashing within the next half an hour or so, let me now if the browser works for you, by the way is compchache or swap automatic on it like cyan's or do I need to set it up myself, I perfer swapper, it just seems to work better for me
I think swapper is automatic but to be honest I never have used it for xrom because it is fast enough without it. The better browser works I just installed it normally, no pushing and I am using it right now with no problems, you have a pm.
If you like the notification bar icons in the first picture on the xrom thread they are from 1.3r3 because they changed in 1.4r3. If you want the older ones I can give you that rom amd it runs just as fast, only has a few differences from the newer one.
This xrom is nice, I am happy with the newest, oh and when I installed swapper and went in it was already set at 96mb and swappiness of 80 and I am on a fresh install and reformat so it must be automaticly set to then, explain why it is so smooth. Definitely comparable performance wise to cyanogen so I might have to stick with this for a while
I dont even have a linux-swap partition on my sd and I haven't had any problems with speed or lag.
Mine is silky smooth, better than I have had on any roms even the stock one

basic enthusiast questions

i got a few questions...
1) i have on average 36m of available memory, is this normal? i got task manager app and seem to be at my optimization limit..
2) im on stock 1.5 now, what is the fastest and most efficient firmware out now that reduces the bloat and optimizes the phone, and how do i put it on the phone
3) what else can you do with the usb cable, is there a 3rd party android client for pc or something like that? anything interesting like that
thanks
1) I assume you mean 36 MB of RAM available? Not internal memory? If so, yes that is actually very good, I average less than 25 and tend to stay under 20 MB
2) There are ROMs on the G1 going all the way up to 2.2, I for one have chosen to stick to 1.6 because, I know many people will disagree with me on this, but I simply just believe the G1's hardware wasn't really meant to go anywhere above 1.6. 2.2 and anything above 1.6 in my opinion is a bit too slow and cumbersome for me. I believe you should make the move to 1.6, maybe SuperD which is what I have been using for half a year now. 1.6 more closely integrates the search function and search tools, when you upgrade to 1.6 you will quickly see what I mean by that and it tends to cause a bit of lag and takes a large chunk of memory, though it is more convenient.
3) Well... you can use it for ADB (Android Debug Bridge). You can use it with Android ScreenCast, which is a program that allows you to use your G1 from your computer as long as it is connected to your phone, you can see whats on the screen, click, etc.
------------------
In continuation of 2:
I don't know if you have rooted your phone or not, but you will definitely need to do that first. Find instruction for that, there are only like a couple dozen threads telling how on XDA.
Find your ROM, again I recommend a 1.6 ROM, but feel free to give 2.2 a try and see if you like it. Install it, do be careful and read the instructions very carefully, especially when it comes to flashing a new radio image, you can brick your phone rendering it unusable.
So just look those things up, follow instructions carefully, reread everything in the instructions before doing anything and of course, in the case you do mess up, I can't be held responsible, I just provided you with a start. Best of luck!
there was an update to 1.6 so im on 1.6 now
since the g1 appears to have a limited amount of ram, is apps2sd worth it, say if i get a class 6 sd card of newegg, how difficult is it to install apps to the sd, and what is the performance
will the sd card deteriorate over time and lose performance?
i just want to put together the most efficient longest lasting setup
btw my i was checking my ram i guess through the task manager app, my free internal memory is like 50+mb..i dont see the point of an sd card if its not even being used, so running apps off the sd is what interests me, i dont have much other reasons to root
RAM really doesn't have that much to do with Apps2SD. I believe you should go ahead with the Apps2SD, but it really depends on how many applications you have. If you have anymore than 30 or so applications, you should go with Apps2SD. I for one am not certain about the effects of low internal memory, except that it gives you an alert every once in a while. My phone has "grown up" with Apps2SD from the start, so I don't have much experience on how a phone runs without it. The thing with Apps2SD is that it might be a hair slower than storing in internal memory, but that is a given. I use a Class 4 SD card and it still runs really nicely, a Class 6 SD card should definitely be good.
The lifetime of an SD card is pretty dicey, it really depends. SD cards have a certain amount of read and write cycles they can do before they finally kill over. Using Apps2SD will be a bit more harder on the SD card, especially if you use a Swap partition too. I use both, and my SD card is still working even a year and a half later.
One benefit, though I don't know how much this means to you, more internal storage data gives you more storage for system applications, such as for Contacts, text messages, etc.
A word of warning though, as using these features like Swap and Apps2SD does put more work on the SD card, the chance of error and corruption on the card itself increases a bit too. So far, I have had two instances in the year and a half where my SD card simply just blanked out. The first time around I lost everything that was on it, music, pictures and all my applications and application data and my phone could no longer boot (this was an issue with older ROMs back in the day of Android 1.0 and when everyone though Cupcake was a myth, when running Apps2SD, the phones would need the SD card to boot, it is no longer a problem). Just a suggestion, backup what is on your SD card every once in a while. I don't mean to scare you with that, it is extremely rare for that to happen, I believe I was just unlucky.
With Apps2SD, I actually feel a lot more free on my phone. I can install tons of applications and not have to worry about running out of memory, I have over 100 applications installed, which the internal memory (because of the applications I have) can't even hold.
So to wrap it up, I apologize for the long winded explanations, I say go Apps2SD, it really is worth it. Most of the ROMs today support automatic Apps2SD, whenever you install an application it just automatically goes onto your Ext3 partition. (Yes, you will need to repartition your SD card to have an Ext3 partition as well as a Swap partition if you want, this can be done really easily with Amon's Recovery Image.) In some ROMs, you can just go to the settings/ Spare Parts section and check Apps2SD.
so basically app2sd has only to do with the internal memory...it will not help free the ram even with a swap drive, is this what your saying correct
it will help only with installed applications
Yes that is correct, Apps2SD is designed to keep internal storage memory free and open for other things like text messages, call logs, internet data (cache, cookies, etc) and cache data for other applications like Google Maps and the Android Market.
where are the text messages stored by default, in the internal memory or the sim card, cause my old phone could hold only 25 messages in the sim card, how does this work on here
Messages are stored in internal memory and no where else, they can be moved to the SIM card with other applications, though space is extremely limited there.

This is a linux based system.. "free" memory is pretty much meaningless. Stop worrying about it. Task manager apps are a waste of time and actually cause a lot of problems in android.

Well once rooted, with most roms you can tether your pc to your phone for internet access (using the phone as a modem so to speak). useful if you are in dire need of internet access using a pc/laptop with no current available wired connection.
alright i figured most of this out i tried thedudes lite and dwang 1.17.1 build
the only problem i have is any build on donut (1.6) makes my camera not work the camera closes unexpectedly all the time (full wipe)
on cupcake its completely fine

[Q] Is it time? Should I put my G1 out to pasture?

Hey Everyone,
It is with a heavy heart that I report that my G1 seems to be on its way out. I have come to everyone at XDA over the past 2 years for both the good and the bad, the easy questions and the hard ones. I come to you again, possibly for the last time in the HTC Dream section, for more advice.
Over the last week my G1 has been acting up daily. I'm currently running CM6 stable release, and I couldn't be happier with the ROM. My problems I think rest solely with the aging hardware. Problems include:
-jittery screen when there is nothing touching the screen
-touchscreen has lost nearly all sensitivity in the 4 corners of the screen
-reboots that randomly bring the phone back to a state from a few days ago (ie when I reboot the phone with deleted shortcuts, alarms and in wifi mode, when the reboot completes the shortcuts will be back, the alarms will be there again and wifi will be turned off etc) almost as if the phone decided to do a nandroid restore all by itself.
-home button not working in anything other than recovery
-"missing SIM card" notifications will randomly appear despite the SIM card being firmly in place and untouched. (usually requires a power-off and a removal/replace of the SIM card)
-the phone seems to be unable to read sdcards (trouble started when I got a "damaged sdcard" notification in the status bar. However, once I plugged in the sdcard to a separate usb adapter, the sdcard and the data was still intact. I reformatted anyways and restored the data. Now I no longer get an error message however, there is no longer an option to mount the sdcard when a usb cable is connected, nor can I get the sdcard to mount in recovery. Additionally, because of the sdcard issues, nothing can be accomplished that needs access to the sdcard i.e. flashing new ROMs, running scripts, taking pictures, apps2sd etc. It seems like the phone's ability to read ANY sdcard is gone.
I guess those are the major ones. Obviously some are way more important than others. I'm having a really hard time convincing myself to keep on trucking with the G1 and spending time every night hashing out things that keep going wrong and doing research.
So I put it to my friends at XDA....any solutions for these ailments or has my G1 simply had enough and is begging me to put the final nail in the coffin?
All the best,
DM
if your having that many problems. I would say its time to put it to rest. And move on to better things. That's a lot of **** to deal with for such an old phone. Don't get me wrong. I love the g1. And I feel for ya man. Another og of android down. RIP
sent from my superfroyo dream
As much as I like my G1, I can see it's days getting shorter. It isn't as bad as your phone, but they all hit obsolescence in their own way.
It sound like it's time to hung up the phone, one last time.
Personally, I'm planning on getting the G2 when it comes out. It can't replace the Original Android, but it will help ease the pain.
DO NOT GET THE G2! 800 MHZ PROCESSER ONLY! YOU WILL REGRET IT, I GUARANTEE YOU THAT!
If you buy it, that's a gasser.

That will be easily overclocked to 1ghz and if you play games, this phone will be unmatched.
I'm a noob by comparison but that sounds like software issues to me, at least partially.
I have to say, my mt3g did a lot of weird **** like that when I installed CM6, but I think I may have just had a corrupted file. Before you decide it's dead, unroot and return to oem and see how it does. You might be surprised...
Unless a good working 1Ghz processor Android phone comes out Id wait.
There are some phones like the Vibrant and Captivate that are almost perfect too but the gps software or maybe even HARDWARE is bad, some have experienced other major issues like the driver isn't compatible and is not picked up by their computer, android lags and you cant use turn by turn Google Navigation on many of them.
You are on T-Mobile so hold out til early next year, there will be more options likely in 2011.

Good point, if this is possible and the CPU is under clocked (Usually the case) from factory that's definitely a logical option.

I believe your solution is a little unreasonable. Any 32B device I say has to be replaced by a stronger device this year! There will be little or no development/support after the G2/Project Emerald has been released and the hardware is horrible. I am embarrassed when someone asks to use my phone since it is really slow.
I saw get the Vibrant, G2 or what until Project Emerald is released.
For me, I want to get the G2 because of
1)Stock Android 2.2
2)The GPU on that device is amazing.
3) The CPU performances better than any old snapdragon 1 Ghz phone.
4) The keyboard brings more options for playing games.
But if it had 1gHz, then it'd easily be OC'd to 1.2gHz. DUH!
I'm getting so impatient for this G2 to hit the stores. If they delay the release I'm going to **** a brick.
EDIT - I LOVE that this forum has no swear filter!
Get it if your contract ends in 1-3 months.
If you contract doesn't end in 1-3 months, wait until it does end so you can choose between the G2 or Project Emerald (or even switch carriers)

[Q] Constant lock ups on boot (Multiple Roms)

Does anyone elses Nook lock up on them frequently. My lockups consist of a reboot, me pulling out the CWMR boot sd and wiping my cache and then good to go(60% of the time it works everytime, sometimes i have to reflash completely).
But it seems like its 2-3 times a day that it will just freeze and fail to reboot properly. This has been on CM7 nightlies 37,38 and phiremod 5.3. I also had same results with Honeycomb and Froyo 0.6.8. Stock 1.0.0 was fine for extended lengths of time. not sure whats going on with my device maybe someone else is having this issue or has fixed it already, any advice is welcome. SJ
i hate to be that guy but 29 views and nobody can at least type "never had that happen" im not looking for an answer im wondering if its software or if its hardware malfunction ie water or impact damage.
(edit)
I have only owned this NC for 5 days now, however no new kid on the block when it comes to android and rooting devices. i feel as if i must be forgeting to wipe something when i flash roms but i jst do as instructed by the thread.
I've had occasional forced close on the CM7 nightly builds. Nothing on the frequency you're describing. The only time I had major issues with lockups, I was using a slow or faulty SDcard. I switched to a Transcend 8GB class 6 and it's been much better.
I did a clean wipe and flash of cm7 stable and it seems to be holding upas of so far, but well see.
Im also sometimes noticing screen distortion on power Downs. I wish there was a water damage indicator I could see easily
On the rare occurrence, ill pickup my nook, and it will be off. not sure why this has happened once or twice (could be user error.) Otherwise its very stable. I would suggest a full wipe, dont forget davlik cache (which it sounds like you already did) and see what happens. CM7 has been quite stable for a while. Ive never had an issue.
Now on SD Card.. thats a different matter entirely. i was never able to get a stable bootable version of any rom on sd card. It seems like the Cards Are very picky.

[Q/Problem] Seems to happen with Every Rom.

I would like to keep this short and sweet so...
Basically heres the low down: I got a G1 almost a year ago, got into Rooting/flashing 7 months ago. I noticed in the beginning almost every rom was giving me a problem, Freezing up, hanging for long periods of time, etc. I eventually found a very nice, stable rom thats been lasting me for about 6 months but as of late was being horrible. Force Closing everytime I got a text message, REALLY Hanging for long periods of time, freezing up. Etc.
So I finally got FED UP, and decide it was time for a change, so I grabbed MLIGN 3.3v having seen so many good reviews and what not, thinking it would be the remedy to my poison. I cried. So in short, here is whats going on:
1. It seems to only wanna cooperate when Plugged into the USB, which, isn't too practical.
2. When not plugged in, it is NOT sluggish, but when loading into apps I've noticed it will hang for quiet awhile or completely lock up to the point only popping out the battery will work.
3. I haven't noticed it yet, but on the old ROM it would randomly shut off during phone calls; which leads me too....
4. When ever I shut the screen off (by pushing endcall) it seems to freeze and lock up and eventually either SHUTOFF or REBOOT into a SHUTOFF of the phone and refuse to turn back on until it has been plugged into the USB, or enough time has passed for it to 'forgive me' and by that, I mean randomly work again.
5: Various other things I cant think of right now.
So, basically thats almost everything. Whenever its plugged into USB though, it works like a charm (for the most part).
Would a problem with my Battery be the case? Which, would be awkward but a possibility.
Or did I just do something wrong?
I made sure to factory wipe the phone twice, even 3 times on the last go, I updated the ENG.SPL and Radio every time I tried to reflash just to make sure.
I partitioned my SD Card for 32MB Swap; 512EXT2 (and 7xxEXT2 I forget what it was) and I also upgraded it to EXT3, which showed some improvement... I believe.
So, I just would like to have my phone working, in a peaceful, obedient manner xD.
Forgive me for the block of text, and all help will be appreciated. Thank you guys... I await sound advice
Try different ROM? See which one works best.
Like me, I found that SuperAosp is best suit for me (see my sig for DEV Site and Download, if you want to try it). It had been running fast and I had no issue, what so ever. Occasionally when I loaded apps that hogged the power usage it gets lags, but still good. FCs are at minimal to none (that's just because of the way I handle the apps). Once in a while I noticed that it reboot, when I tried to use the apps that hogged the memory (maybe that was the apps issue).
Only other thing I recommed is to download a different launcher, because the build-in ADW Launcher does not work too well in my opinion.
Another thing, if you wish to keep the ROM you had. I would suggest to change the partition size. (IE: Catch [128MB]/Ext 2 or EXT 3 [1024MB]/ FAT32[the rest]) Now I know other people might say that it's overkill, but to me my G1 performance it great.
I've tried multiple roms as of late, and the one I like the most does happen to be MLIGNs... everything seems to be working correctly for the most part with the exception of what I listed above... Now on the like, 23rd reboot most of the sluggishness that was there before is gone, and everything is pretty much being cooperative, with the exception of like the weather, which isn't updating properly but I can live with that. What I cant live with is the fact that this ROM when not plugged in, will freeze up when in the lock screen, a few minutes after it has darkened and gone black and wont respond at all. Or I'll unplug it and just do a test, swipe left, right for a good minute or two, go into apps and It'll just SHUT OFF. Maybe it really is the battery? I'm unsure. When I look at the battery it does look quiet bloated... I am unsure...
I'm gonna try to set it to what you recommended, and see if that works...
I don't think it's the battery.
Have you tried reformat/partion your SD card (be sure to backup your data first). See my last comment on sizes recommendation for each partition.
Also check on the swappiness setting.
Mhm... so I went back and followed everything you told me to do, including repartitioning to the exact file sizes you told me. (Also I'm guessing Cache meant Swap) So I set everything up and its really blazing fast and stable.... until I remove the USB cord. Then it shuts off, freezes at lock screen when the screen is dimmed to black, and will just randomly shut off while doing things (especially when trying to get into messages)
Also if it helps, I have a Class 2 8Gig SD card, and my Recovery is Ra 1.5.x(I forget.) I'm completely confused... I dunno what to do... I would really like this to just work and stop being a hassle D:
Hmmm, Try reading this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010932
See if it helps.
Nothing :/ Its okay... I'm gonna go play around with other roms, completely re do my phone, make sure everything is updated etc. Then go from there.
Thank you anyways, you were a big help, reguardless of my phones triumphing retardism
