Yesterday, my phone stopped making audio notifications and playing the ringtones when I get calls, it just vibrates. Overnight I did a clean install of CM4.2.13 and still nothing. No audio will play out of it EXCEPT when I answer a phone call, just as I hit talk it will play just the tiniest snippet of my ringtone so I'm fairly certain that there's no hardware damage. Calls go through fine on the earpiece speaker and the microphone is working too.
I've scoured the nets for a solution and found none except one person mentioned something about the radio. Is it possibly that with flashing tons of roms that the radio might become damaged and that I should reinstall it?
I also tried installing the G1 audio hack in hopes that it might right the ship but still nothing. That's all I can think of!
I've looked at every setting and open process for a clue and nothing. There's only one or two diff places I've read about a G1 phone having this issue and from what I read it sounds exactly the same so I'm not totally alone.
Any help would be GREAT. THANKS!
just out of curiosity, when you say you did a clean install do you mean you simply wiped and installed it? Or did you wipe, install the Base, then the new rom?
I wiped everything I could using the RA-1.4 and formatted my SD card.
What would you recommend doing?
if theres no sound, Even when in speaker phone, U might have blown the speaker. Not sure where its sold at...

That sounds a lot like hardware damage to me. Your speaker might be fine but the connections to the speaker could very easily be damaged causing only part of the signal to get through.
If you did a full wipe of your phone too (including the radio/SPL) then i would certainly say it isn't a software problem.
Yes, I've wiped EVERYTHING. I actually reverted back to stock everything and then did a CM install.
Got the same problem here.
No sound from rear speaker. It would come on occasionally, when i knock it around a bit but but not for long. At times i can hear it making a really, really tiny sound when i play an mp3. I have to put it right up to my ear to actually hear anything. But most of the time there is nothing coming out the back speaker at all.
Doing a google search on this im surprised at how common this problem actually is and still no one knows whats causing it or how to fix it.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Found a fix for my problem!
I played an mp3. Than while playing around with phone i noticed that if i give it a little twist sound would come back on. I then took off the back cover and realized that if push the battery in very slightly i would get sound! So all i did was stick a piece of double sided tape to the back of my battery and that seems to have taken care of this issue!

Yep! Looks that way. Im about to open it up and see what the situation is.
Found the problem!
Opened up the phone last night. Took out the problem speaker. It has 2 springs comin out of it, which are supposed to make contact with the board. All i did was strech them a little and all is good now. Even took out the piece of tape that i had stuck on the battery for a quick fix.

I received a few phone calls from my girlfriend today, the ringer rang loud and clear, but I heard no sound from my ear piece. After a few "Hello?"s, I hung up thinking it was a bad connection. Upon seeing my girlfriend afterwards, she said she heard me on my end. So I got her to call me again and I tried to use speaker phone, and I could hear her fine.
Doing some research on google, I only ran across one other person who had this problem, and upon seeing this, I tested my music player, (as theirs didn't work), and mine doesn't work either
This other person said the problem resolved itself a day later.
In short, my ear piece has no sound during a phone call and my media sound doesn't work (though it works w/ headphones.) My notification sounds and speaker phone DO work, as well as my alarms
Do the notification and speaker phone speakers come from a different place than media and ear piece speakers?
Do I have a software issue? I tried the "push the speaker down" solution but to no avail

I had nearly the same issue, except mine got to the point where the speaker phone didn't work either. Music played fine, phone calls stopped working. I went through a lengthy process of accidently deleting everything I had on my phone, which lead me to buy a USB Jig, install the stock ROM and it worked perfectly. I would suggest trying this before you try and physical fixes on your phone.

BUT, after a whole night of reading and flashing it WAS FIXED!!!
I am quite tempted to phone Samsung and give them a piece of my mind after they told me some hardware was defective even though they clearly weren't listening to what the problem was

I have the EXACT same problem on my Galaxy Nexus. I've wiped it, tried different ROMs, kernels... Nothing solves it! It's like there's a persistent software problem that survives flashing and even battery pulls.
My phone had this same issue not long ago. It was after I had used some headphones for about an hour. I work in a paper converting factory, so I assume some dust was packed in the headphone jack and made the phone think something was plugged into it. I turned my phone upside down and used a paper clip to scrape it all out (compressed air may have been safer). After a few tries, all sounds were working properly again.

My speaker stopped working. Partially. When I'm on the phone with someone, I can't hear anything from them. If I turn the loudspeaker on, I can hear them just fine. Phone rings and notifies me of smses but I can't hear anything else. I don't hear music or video playing on the phone or the alarm clock.
In short, Working: In-call loud speaker, sms and calls.
Not working: everything else - music, alarm clock, in-call sound.
In summery, I can't decide if it's a software or a hardware problem.
I'm running CM 10.1 M2 with devil 4.2.
I should also note that I disassembled my phone to try and apply the
"loosen the screw" fix on the speaker assembly with no luck, nothing changed.

One simple idea: take a piece of something thin, like needle and clean 3.5mm port.
I had almost-same issue 1 year ago. just dust formed wool and began shorting contacts inside port.

Thank you for the reply. Let me get this straight, you suggest I clean the 3.5mm port even though earphones work fine? (I haven't mentioned this but with earphones, everything works properly).

Your phone has 2 speakers - front, and back.
As i understand, your front speaker (for usual calls) is malfunctioning.
And if you turn SpeakerPhone in call, then you can hear oponent?
Try to clear port, this wont hurt. But might fix issue. You don't need to disassemble phone, wooden match will do too for cleaning.
Just nothing wet, and don't do rough movements inside port.
It's a bit fragile.

When it happened to me I had to re-seat the ribbon going from the speaker to the sim board. it is very sensitive and I had to do it twice before I got connection back....i just banged the phone around too much and the ribbon lost contact....After the ribbon is seated correctly then just don't tighten that screw too much as it will unseat the ribbon again.
So, gosha.

I did as you suggested Yuna, I tried cleaning the 3.5mm port but I'm afraid it had no effect.
Then I disassembled the phone again and as Rmntruexjr suggested, I tried re-seating the ribbon connecting the speaker module to the circuit board several times while the phone is turned on and I'm trying to play music throughout the ordeal. That didn't help either. As previously, ringers work and the loud speaker works but alarm clock, music and the front speaker for calls do not.
Does anyone know if the music and alarm clock are being played by the front or back speaker?
If they are played by the front speaker then the problem is obviously a malfunction in the front speaker and I should just get a new one. Otherwise, there is something weird going on and the back speaker only plays some of the sound and then I can't explain it.

Yup. Just to make sure, we are talking about System Settings -> Sound -> Volumes?
However, your question has just made me recheck all the settings and apparently the alarm clock does work!
The current situation is music and front speaker in-call sound doesn't work, but back speaker in call sound works and so do all of the ringers, notifications and alarms.
So, if you play music - no go? Try volume buttons in-playing.
There are 4 different volumes, and 1 hidden.
Front speaker might be broken. Try stock rom, if not helping - service.
And also in call try to adjust volume.
Try kernel with/without voodoo sound. Install/uninstall voodoo sound.

No go on the music, same with the volume buttons in call.
As for the kernel, I don't think there is a voodoo and cmc version for the 4.2 Devil kernel (for whatever reason), I only found one version of it - set me straight if i'm wrong.
I'll try rolling back and flashing CM 10.0, i'll see if it helps and report back.
Servicing the phone here is probably out of the question since i897's don't exist in my country, only i9000's so if it comes down to hardware, i'll just order a new speaker module from ebay and install it myself.
But to order, you must be sure its speaker itself.

It made no sense what so ever to me how for instance no front speaker in call but still speaker phone worked, but then no music, yet alarm works....(i think the ribbon can lose contact on just the right side so you only get some things working).
Sorry it didn't work for you, but it might be worth it to try again if you exhaust all other possibilities. If you do, keep the phone off while trying to seat the ribbon(and make sure the little black fastener is all the way open(up) when inserting the ribbon). Then to test without putting it all back together I used an elastic to hold the battery and tested that way........
If it really does turn out to be the front speaker/jack/sensor unit, I found one last month on ebay for around $2 for a cappy with a bad Jack and it was fairly easy to replace.
For what it's worth, mine stopped working the other day for no reason. Hit it, and now it works. Just something to try (not too hard of course, just a light tap on the hand )

Same issue....That is how mine started...I dropped it one day then I went to play music and the sound would just cut out for no reason it seemed...I could shake or tap on the phone and it would come back on for a while, then nothing again....for me, it was the speaker ribbon.
Ahh that's kinda crappy (no pun intended). As soon as I hit mine, it worked the whole time the phone wasn't bricked .

I didn't realize earlier that you had the EXACT same problem so I'll give it another go. It's a good idea with the rubber band, I had to hold the battery throughout the ordeal last time. Even if I order one of these units on ebay now, it'll take about a month to arrive.

I'm afraid I tried everything I could which relates to the common Cappy speaker malfunction, that's not it i'm afraid.
I spent 10 days in the desert prior to this malfunction so it's very possible sand caused something (there is sand inside the phone ) or I may have dropped it or something. I didn't want to mention this earlier so I don't throw you guys off straight into a hardware issue.
Well imo hardware is usually an easy fix, so long as it's not the main board (at that point it'd make more sense to just buy a new phone). Open the phone up (don't be scared, there's a tear-down guide on this section w/ pictures), take a can of compressed air, and lightly go over all of the parts inside the phone. Take care not to knock anything out of place. You may also want to re-connect all of the ribbon cables, just in case one came loose (very VERY high possibility). If you need any extra help you can pm me here or shoot me an email (I work in IT and do hardware repairs all the time ).
Hello, I've searched the forum and read general tips on choppy audio playback, and tried some of those suggestions (turning off notifications, limiting background processes under the dev options), and am still having really bad choppyness on audioplayback. I've tried on a number of apps (google music, rocket player, walkman, ), all with the same problems.
The audios are all vbr, non DRM. MP3 and M4a. I do have the files on a separate card I guess. That is something I haven't tried changing... But goodness, the phone only has 16GB onboard. Even my ancient iphone was more than that. The card is class 10 so not slow.
EDIT: I've also tried with the onboard memory - Same deal. I just did a restore via the phone - same deal. I'm on FW434. I'm going to try reflashing the FW tonight (just via the sony update service).
I've got it so that even with next to nothing running other than system stuff, I'm getting random choppy playback. It is driving me nuts. If I can't fix it I'll have to go back to my old iphone.
I mean there is plenty of RAM, and the CPU is understressed.
Any ideas? Anyone else get this?
Oddly enough, I get this ONLY when using the headset. When I use a 3.5 to 3.5mm lead to play music in my car, it all plays without a hitch.

I tried another rebuild last night. Same deal. It still does it.
FFS, this is on stuff I've had for years. I'm trying to listen to the Portishead self titled album. Had it for years, listened to it about ten times, no issues on my iphone and ipods. I can't take it. This phone has broken me and I have to go back to an iphone just to preserve my sanity.
No problems here even when using headphones. You should take it back and get it fixed/replaced.

Thanks, I think it must be. Was suggested elsewhere I've asked about it. I'm taking it back today.
That's good. Make sure you let them hear it (music being choppy) and be FIRM that it is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE when you are paying money for it.
They took my word for it, but I left the album on the main memory I was testing with.
It was so random though. After I prepped it to return (sim out, SD out) I tried again and it didn't do it for 12 minutes, so I put the SD in and tried again, and got it happening, then took the SD out, played from main memory, and it did it within 30 seconds then.
It is more like audio drop out than a pause. Eg, not affecting rhythm, just no sound momentarily. And headphones and loudspeaker. Like something amiss in the audio circuitry.
I hope it comes back fixed. It was within the Optus 30 days replacement time, but they weren't a "merited Yes Optus store" so couldn't replace on the spot.
I sure hope it comes back fixed. I was just starting to get used to the thing, even with the annoying-ness of needing three audio players instead of one... (music, aax audiobooks, and m4b audiobooks)... But the whole iphone to android exp[erience has been such a shock. The only thing I'm real happy with (other than the physical size and design) is the discovery of dolphin. What a great mobile browser

I'm not quite in the same boat with you. My audio occassionally stutters, doesn't drop out. When I said 3.5mm lead, I meant a lead which has a 3.5mm jack on one side and a 3.5mm jack on the other side. One end goes into my phone, the other into the AUX plug of my car stereo.
Ah right. Yes that sounds different to what I'm experiencing. That sounds more like a headphone type issue. Must admit the actual socket doesn't seem particularly robust.
Ah well, I'm still waiting on my phone to come back. Two damn weeks now. I keep hoping, and then hoping that they will have fixed it I've found it slow and small going back to my iphone for a while now...
Argh, over three weeks since I put it in for repair. I just called and it left Sydney Friday, so should have it tomorrow or Wednesday. I just hope the audio is fixed.

Still the same damn issue. They didn't even bother taking it apart or testing it. Just "updated sw to latest", which it already bloody was.
And I got a new fault now. My SD card crashes the phone. And Ive tried everything, to formatting it (low level) to exfat to make the experia prompt to reformat via the notifications, and it would crash midway through formatting.
I'm so sick of this. I can't take it. I just want to be able to have a phone with more than 16gb memort, and listen to music without dropouts

I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the phone itself or if I did something when I rooted/flashed a rom. The speakerphone microphone works but in regular calls, nothing gets picked up by the microphone. Any ideas?

People on the other line say my voice is very muffled and distant. And I also don't hear anything on the right side when recording a video. It must be a defect with the bottom microphone. I wish there was a fix rather than having to get the phone replaced.

I went today, and for the moment it seems to work okay, I brought my phone directly from the dealer, and they replaced me with another new phone.
It's definitely an issue with my bottom microphone because when I make a call using the speakerphone, the other caller can hear me perfectly, since the speakerphone mode uses the back mic. But regular calls using the bottom mic sound awful.
Has anyone been able to get a replacement that has resolved the microphone issue? I just bought my HTC One from T-mobile a little over a week ago and I'm debating whether or not I should return it to the store to get replacement(which may have not solve the issue) or to send it to HTC through product warranty and hope for them to repair it.
I've got the exact same issue here in Australia, just the last few days when I make a call the person at the other end can hardly hear me but when I put it on speakerphone its fine. Looks like I'll have to return it. I bet I don't get a replacement. Over here the phone has to be sent back to be fixed. I had terrible issues with my Galaxy S3 that was finally replaced after being sent back twice. Thought my luck would change with the One but looks like that isnt the case. Very frustrating.

Went to a concert a week ago and recorded a video and it sounded fantastic, a week later however, when I record a video all I get is very loud static. Same goes with voice calls. If I set it to speakerphone they can hear me fine. Idk whether to contact HTC or AT&T I have the insurance + warranty.
Any help would be appreciated. I don't really wanna flash or root it yet because of warranty issues and what not.

I had the same issue with the loud static through the bottom mic but mine was from dropping it no more than 3 feet from the ground with the otter box on. I had my carrier send it out for repairs and the replaced the flex board and the bottom speaker and mic and since I've gotten it back, I have no more issues with static on my phone calls.
However, I am getting a lot of complaints of people not hearing me when I speak or it sounds like I'm too distant. Now I'm frustrated.

Hmm did it cost you any money (if you don't mind me asking)?
HTC wants me to ship it out and I haven't contacted AT&T about it yet.
Idk what the better choice would be!
I'm glad your static issue is gone though! It's very frustrating to not be able to make phone calls on my cell phone...

It didn't cost me anything as it was under warranty. I got the phone the day it was released.
I'm not sure how it is in America, but I'm with Rogers and they deal with all repairs. So, they sent my phone out to HTC and had it returned to me at no cost.
To be honest I don't even know how it works here either. I've never had to send a phone back.
It's seems as if I can go through HTC directly or through AT&T.

Same problem, just crept up out of nowhere. Speakerphone works during calls, but callers tell me I am going in and out, so I was like, what. I tried to record a video right next to my tv, no audio. Hmmm, opened voice recorder and I was yelling into phone and it came out almost silent. Voice search is also useless unless I scream at my phone, that's what really started this whole thing wondering what is going on as I really do use Now for alot. Owned phone from day one, 64 GB ATT model. What gives.

I dropped my phone from literally four inches above a hardwood floor - EDIT - possibly relevant detail - I dropped it while in the act of recording video - and had serious static issues immediately after that.
Before sending it in for repair, I tried gently rapping it a few times in various ways ( see http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percussive_maintenance ).
I also experimented with recording a few really loud sounds thinking some kind of automatic gain control on the dual membrane mic may have gotten stuck at an extreme value.
One way or another the problem went away and never came back. I consider myself lucky.

I just called HTC and they have basically told me I am out of luck and aren't going to do a thing for me. I purchased an unlocked AT&T HTC ONE brand new for 800 ish dollars. Since I am in Canada, that's their loop hole I guess. Either way, I don't care what country I'm in, I paid 800 for a product that clearly has a hardware issue.
SHAME ON YOU HTC, ILL NEVER SUPPORT YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN!

This is how I fixed mine.
Start the recording app, you'll see that the visualizer indicates that it is recording sound, it's the static.
now grab 2 bristles from a toothbrush and gently stick them in the bottom mic
rotate them gently, you'll notice the visualizer getting smaller if you're doing it right, means less static coming in.
do this until the static is gone. worked for me, took 5 minutes.
Same Issue
I am having the same problem now. My phone is one month old and it was working fine and then i rooted the phone two weeks back it still was working fine and then today suddenly i didn't hear anything when my friend called me thought it to be signal issue then it happened same with every one of my calls. Do i have to unroot and lock my boot loader before i take it to HTC or at&t?
Possible Fix
Hey all,
Here's what I did to fix my Sprint HTC One
I went into system --> build.prop
I changed persist.audio.handset.mic=digital to persist.audio.handset.mic=analog
Reboot
This solved my issue after I've tried many things. Here were some temporary fixes that worked for me before I found this permanent fix:
Screaming into the microphone for around a minute. After that, the rest of the call seemed to work. Note: The microphone is on the bottom, underneath the bottom speaker.
Covering the second microphone that's on the BACK of the HTC One (you'll see it in the top right). That helped as well.

I too had a problem after about six months... No one could hear me when I spoke into my phone. So I took a needle and carefully put it in the small hole in the bottom, scraping against one of the sides - and voila: up came some pocketwhool (is that the word for that hairy dust that comes out of nothing in the pocket all the time...?)
The microphone has worked perfectly ever since... ??? ?
