"Bricked" G1??? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically to make a long story short, I have two G1s a black one and white. I was trying to upgrade the ROM on the white one, when I made a mistake and it wouldn't upgrade, so therefore, I tried it on my black G1, but I did something wrong, I don't remember, since it was like two months ago, and it will not boot up properly.
Meaning, no matter what I press, fastboot, recovery, etc it only goes upto the T-Mobile G1 splash page, and stays there until the battery dies...
So, what can I do to fix this issue, with my G1? I wanted to fix it since my mother wants to use it, elsewise, I just throw it out...

There is no way to un-brick a G1 without jTagging it, which requires some savvy knowledge.Never heard of a double brick, sounds cool. BTW you posted in the wrong section, Thanks.

What do you mean by double brick?
The white one for some reason "unbricked" itself, and the when it did I flashed the latest ROM that I could find at the time...
But anyway how can I jTagging it?

Need to know if this G1 is fixable.

Hey there I need to know if this screen tells you enough to know whether this G1 is fixable or not. My buddy is thinking about buying it real cheap from craig's list ad. I used to be a part of the xda dream community, and I probably knew the answer at one point, but I got my phone stolen a long time ago and never had another dream. It looks to me like a failed nandroid attempt or a botched update.zip. Not sure. Just tell me if its fixable, and what I have to do to fix it. Here's pic:

What kind of board is it? PVT (32A/B)? DVT? Maybe it was bricked because someone tried rooting a DVT board.
The easy answer is this;
MAYBE.
First off, it isn't bricked.
Writing the nbh fails, so something seems to be going wrong. The question is what... if it is something stupid, like a bad sdcard, then it could be easily fixed by using a new sdcard. If it is a bad internal flash though, then it is garbage.
Actually, I notice that recovery and boot wrote successfully... this is hopeful.
Since it obviously has a decent stock recovery image installed, you might be able to boot the thing into recovery and write an UPDATE.ZIP to it.
Thanks for all the replies. I'm still not sure if the phone is fixable. Is this the default recovery mode? If so, I'm assuming that there would be no ADB access. So my best option would be to try and load a signed update.zip to fix the system partition, right? Wasn't there a custom bootloader written for the dream that would allow me to flash the system partition or at least give me ADB access? I'm leaning towards telling my friend to go ahead and buy the phone. It would probably be fun to try and fix it. I guess I will tell him to ask the seller whether he can still boot into recovery mode or bootloader, and if so, to go ahead and buy it. What do you guys think? Would you buy this phone for say, 75 bucks?

REAL BRICK!!! HELP!! desperate!!!

I'm in desperate need of help!! i've tried searching and it seems liek everyone didn't have a real brick..
i have a real brick!!! NO button combinations work.. my computer doesnt even detect it thorugh usb!!! ive tried so many different things and i have NO CLUE why none wont work!!!
i have the ROGERS DREAM so i know its different from the t-mobile one....
please!!! i'm DESPERATE!!
if you truly have a "real brick", there's nothing that can be done.
are you serious?! i'm really hoping for a fix because according to most threads..people say that most of the time when peopel say they have a brick..they dont!!
Well, what did you do.
If you have a real brick you are SOL.
I bricked mine last week. Told rogers that the update did it and I just got a "new" one. It's refurbished but at least it's not bricked.
i did a ONE CLICK ROOT and i think that was successful.... and then i flashed it to the CYANOGEN latest update...and now.. i can't do anything.. stuck on the rogers logo boot up screen.!!!
what sorts of files should i be putting on my SD card?? (not partitioned either) is theres some sort of file that will trigger the phone to go into any other screen?

What you did is you failed to read the instructions.
There is a particular order to changing out the radio and spl images.
You did it wrong and therefore have a brick.
Good for you.
Sorry but I think your toast.
I don't know the 1 click root method but I am guessing it is a radio/spl issue.
i guess so... i'm going to try to get my sister to do what you did and see if she can blame it on the rogers update and get a refurbed one...
thanks
Can you atleast go to the recovery screen?
no ..nothin.. camera + power, home + power, back+ power, menu + power ..doesnt work.....
=(....want me to pay for the burial? lol jk
but no seriously that sucks man im sorry to hear it.
ive had a whole bunch of close calls -.- you could always make a fake eBay account, sell it as if its new and get another?
LOL thanks one of the nicer comments i've received so far .... i was just being really hopeful that it could be recovered but i guess mine is one of few lost causes...
and nah.. i can't do that.... sell on ebay and stuff.. too unethical for me haha

im sorry man r.i.p.
its okay...btw..i'm not a man.. hhaha
O.O alien?
lol what?!?! is there a rule where there isnt women allowed?
no we love women
If it's stuck at Carrier logo, then you could possibly blame Rogers for the recent update and get a new device. Just make sure to leave no traces that you've rooted the device.
DONE.. thanks
just called rogers.. and they had me hold home+power twice to try and get that exclamation mark symbol..but it was just hanging at the rogers screen..
so right after that, they told me they'd send me a replacement to exchange this bricked one for the new one...
problem somewhat solved... now i know not to attempt rooting again .. ^_^ thanks for all quick replies!

[Q] - Change ROM => Boot between start screens

Hi,
I own a Captivate on Rogers (Canada).
I had the ROM Firefly 2.6 (or 2.4) and decided to change to something quicker or at least different.
I decided to put Cyanogen 7 on it, because many people told me to.
I succeeded in installing Cyanogen and it worked great, easy to use, fast, ultra fast reboot, nice looking... but not all the software I was looking for.
So I decided to change again to a JVQ SIMPLY.
Put it on the SD, move it to sdcard via Astro under Cyanogen and reboot in recovery mode to install update from sdcard.
It wrote that it was ok, and needed to reboot.
Now the only thing I have is "booting" from
- the very first screen with Galaxy S I9000 on it to
- a second one with Galaxy S Cyanogen(mod)
I can access the screen with the little android guy in the public works sign, yellow, with Downloading... and Do not turn off Target!!! (did it trying hard reset).
I couldn't reboot with 3 buttons (tested many methods), the one with Odin, I never ever succeeded with that one, and it continues changing from a screen to another without stopping but if I remove the battery of course.
What can I do from there?
Thank you for your help... again...
Just for clarification, did you do the Odin One-Click to stock? If you can get to the download screen (the yellow sign / "Do not turn off target" screen), you should be able to flash back to stock.
I tried the Odin 1-click, but I think that it won't work right now because I can't access the administrator rights (from work).
I must try from home tonight.
Will it remove everything like the fact it is root?
Thank you for your answer by the way.
The lack of admin rights is very possibly why it won't work. There's also the chance that without admin rights, you're not able to install the samsung drivers. Either way, waiting until you get home sounds like a good idea.
You might be able to do the Heimdall one-click without admin rights, but it would probably be wise to read up on that one first as it's in Beta right now.
The one-click to stock will put your phone in the state it came out of the box, but leave all your personal files on the phone. You will have Eclair 2.1, unrooted, straight as it came from (in your case) Rogers. Any pictures, music, etc you saved on your internal sd card (not the microSD) will still be there, but you'll have to re-root and reinstall any rom you want.
Ok, so I tried different Odin (one click) I found here, and the last one, from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126704&highlight=odin
I flashed the PIT only, because I didnùt know what to put where... bad idea, now my phone doesn't switch on.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but it looks like you might have fully bricked yourself.
If you are still under warranty, you can try to send it in for warranty service. If not, or if you aren't comfortable taking that route, look for a member named connexion2005 (or mobiletechvideos on google), who can do JTAG service for you for $50.
The JTAG thing is the special cable made from special resistor, right?
Or do you mean it is hard break and only expert can do something?
Thank you very much for your help and your support.

You're thinking of a Jig, which is a set of resistors that kicks the phone into download mode.
Unfortunately, you need JTAG, which is a special service that rewrites the bootloaders to the phone so that it can boot normally. That's something that you either need to be fairly knowledgeable about electronics to do yourself, or something you'll need to send in (to Samsung or mobiletechvideos) to have fixed.
Yeah I thought of a jig...
Ok, I will try the warranty, perhaps it is so much messed up, they won't find anything...
I will let you know.
See you.

Good luck - hopefully your next time around with custom Roms will go better.
I did many, many things with WInMo and never encountered any brick (sometimes I was close to the cliff, but never fell).
Since I have this Captivate, I not sure to really like it, I am fond of android either, and I don't take enough time to read carefully each post...
I think it is time for me to take an iphone...
Although you could do that, I think you'll find if you give yourself a little time with Android you'll come to really like it.
Don't get me wrong - the iPhone is a well made product. But it is one thing, and only one thing. Android devices can really be anything you want.
But that's my opnion. Do with it what you will.
People like you are gold, taking time to help newbie with the always same questions, don't selling android is the best (other are selling ios is the best), ...
I'll see what kind of hone I can find, because the Atrix was a cool phone I liked, and I always liked HTC (qtek before)...
Apple is expensive!!!

Thank you. I'm just trying to repay the many favors everyone else here on the board has done for me in the past.
Definitely look around - if the Captivate isn't working for you, there's plenty of Android phones that are every bit as good. I've also had good luck with HTC phones in the past, and Motorola's not bad, either.
And yes, Apple is expensive. Can't argue with you on that one.
This might be stupid question but, is your battery charged ?
Hi,
aww.W.T.F, I hope so yes... it was on the usb for hours... you put me a doubt... I need to check now!!
I asked Rogers for warranty, they charge $35 for an exchange, and 5 days to wait, I think this is a little bit too much. But I will do it.
What I discussed with a guy is that I will finish my current subscription with Rogers and take the HTC Sensation with Virgin... Another try with android, to follow jmtheiss.
I will continue to let you know about how it goes.
If my profile is closed tonight, this will be because I will be too ashamed because I had an empty battery...
P.S. Ok it is not the battery... I'm waiting for my new one and will send this one to warranty (I'll see what they can find or not...).

[Q] how many bricks?

Would love to know how many people have bricked their notes. Is it just an odd few or are there 100s.Has anyone had repairs ,unbricked or replaced by their carrier?
I too would like to know this.
Ok
Soft brick? I am sure there are tons, me included, a proper brick brick after which you use the phone for a coaster, don't think so many, though I have one of those too (shattered display).
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was nearly impossible to brick an Android phone? When I was learning to flash and so on with my SGS, I certainly bollocked it up a lot of times (ah... misadventures with using incorrect files...). I have always been able one way or another been able to get back in and mend the damage.
With the Note, Download mode is hardwired in so I thought it would be difficult indeed to properly brick it. That said, I haven't done much with the SGN yet since it's my daily device and I leave it alone. (@torqu3e, I don't think shattered screens count towards the typical definition of 'bricked' do they? I thought it was a software f-up )
When someone says brick, I think of a phone that just won't turn on and is completely useless...but in many people's cases recently, the partition tables have been messed up and the phone is as good as useless. It no longer holds its function as an Android device. So yes, add me to the list of "bricked" Notes out there.
I got a hard brick! :-( It's in the shop..

Sharing wat you did to brick your phone might help others prevent it.This is not only to you but to all who's gonna report here....
I was talking more about bricking from flashing that dodgy ics ROM.Anyone unbricked or had it fixed under warranty.
Add me to the list. I bricked when I flashed a kernel that messed up the partition tables. Its at the service now.
one more to the list
i need to sent mine to the US
I faced a soft brick when i was flashing ics betas (mobile to pc screen) but fixed it by flashing stock rom then flashed back ics!

In ODIN while trying to flash CF-Root ICS progress bar froze on Factoryfs flash and after 30 minutes I unplugged it. Phone at this point wont restart turn on or anything. Didn't respond to JIG to go into download mode so I took it to a service center in Southern California. They tried fixing it with JTAG and it didn't respond. It is Kernel related. I got some sort of good news today from the service center that they may have found a solution and are receiving a new tool to do the trick. I am crossing my fingers and waiting for the next phone call from them that if they could get my phone up and running again!!

Phone repair for unknown cause, help please.

Hi guys, this is first time posting in the HTC Incredible S forum as I usually stay on my own X8. However, my dad is pissed off with htc and I offered to help.
Ok so here's what happened. My dad upgraded to the 4.0.X official ROM software. But somehow or another the games first started crashing, then one day he woke up with an error message saying that his applications used up more battery than his charging. Then his whole phone went dead.
So anw he sent it to HTC for repair but it costs $300+ and i'm quite poor so please can anyone help me?
BTW, it's not boot looping. It's totally screwed and can't be turned on.
Here's the weird part (i've never encountered this before). He didn't even root it or modify it in anyway (not even using a different launcher or wallpaper other than stock HTC ones).
So could somebody tell me what's wrong? Cos I'm a sony user and i've no idea what are you guys talking about S-ON thingy and whatever.
And could someone tell me how to fix his phone?
Please?

try taking the battery out and putting it back in. otherwise take out the battery and plug the usb cable in and see if the phone boots up. if it does then either the battery is either screwed or something is wrong with motherboard or something like that. if its completely stock run a RUU that you can get from the development page which will put the phone back to stock. EDIT- here is a ruu http://d-h.st/AYt
$300+ to repair an HTC, what is it made of solid gold? Another thing, why are you paying for your dads fone to be repaired???
Sent from My Omega powered beast, using Xparent ICS
it's made out of plastic and metal and some other stuff.
Anw to the guy 2nd post thanks i'll try it
and i'm not paying but i'm just helping. And if i repair it I may get one step closer to having a new phone (current is LG cookie non-smartphone).
