"H" Symbol on Froyo? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i had an "H" symbol for HSDPA on my Desire. Now i have a Nexus one and i put on Froyo straight after buying it and the H Symbol is gone, there is only 3G.
Speeds are perfect so this is not a big issue but it would be fine to get my H back
Someone running Froyo and have the H Symbol?
Don't know if stock 2.1 on N1 had an H...
thanks in advance
Sorry for posting in a new thread, sure this question has been somewhere already but it is impossible to search for "H" or "3G" or "symbol" lol

No, there is no H on the stock FroYo. Don't worry about it. You're not missing anything.
It's only the icon missing, not the speed.

You want your H, you have to root.

i have root, where to get the H ? Please link, thank you!
c'mon.. rooting is the first thing to do after unpacking the device
ah: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687349&page=3 ? -> no.. cant find an H symbol there..
google search works omg..
Edit: ok no h for me without custom rom, thx

H-G? o.k. noob question

Hi,
Just recently got the Tilt and applied the Kaiser tweak from the sticky, in which I enabled the H icon. Here's my question tho,
Just this evening ATT turned up 3G on the towers near me, so when I first turned on my phone this evening-shock of all shocks- I see 3G-WOOHOO!!!
Getting great streaming from a basic microsoft media page at like 450Kbps-not complaining at all, it's awesome-from somewhere that Edge was the fastest for a looong time.
But now, after applying the tweak to enable the H icon, it is always H , not like it switches to 3G? I might be wrong, but isn't the H icon only supposed to show up when you are actually downloading data?
It's on all the time on my phone now,not complaining-have the "Unlimited" data pkg from ATT, just wondering?
Anyone care to help out a networkin noob?
Alemaker
D'OH- noob city - lol- it is working right-the big H is on all the time-only get the little h when it's dloading-umm, mods if ya wanna delete this thread-please do!! I can't figure out how-yet.

Speedtest Question

Hey guys,
I heard that FroYo differentiates the 3G and H icons on the notification bar.. but I have not seen mine change to H. How do I know if I have HSPA/HSDPA? I live in Orlando, Florida, so I would imagine we get good coverage here?
And also I see people put these crazy 3G speeds on their sigs of the speedtest.net application with like over 1MB DL speeds and such.. but the highest DL speed the application has recorded on my phone is around 600KB on 3G..
Any help?
H typically gains speeds of around 2-3Mbit i.e. around 2-300kb/s. So it sounds like you're still on normal 3G and an average connection at that. I only get H in a select few locations, most of the time I get the same speed as yourself.

Oh I see. Eh I just tested it twice on FroYo and got DL speeds of 17 and 43 kb/s wtf ?
I haven't seen the H icon yet on Froyo. Was using Kang-o-rama 0.7b1 before I installed Froyo courtesy of Paul @modaco. The H icon would display alot on the Kang-o-rama rom. At my desk my nexus would display H icon with Kang now it shows 3G with Froyo. I unfortunately didn't run any speedtests on it before I installed Froyo.
The speed I am getting now in an area that displayed H previously are: download .8Mbps and upload 1.2Mbps.
Would these be average 3G or H speeds?

I may be wrong but I thought on CM which is what Kang-o-rama is based off of, the 3G symbol is replaced with the H symbol and that is why you saw it where you would normally have 3G. Can someone else confirm this?
I don't know why people can't understand this, seriously. 3G=H. H is short for HSDPA Which is... 3G. What Cyanogen did was a visual mod nothing more. Which I hate now because we end up with post like this. There's no difference and if there is it may be the new radio.

H is enhanced 3G and H is faster than 3G and so 3G not equal to H. If H was displayed I expect to be able to get faster download speeds than if 3G was displayed and so I would prefer if H would be displayed when HSDPA available and 3G displayed when 3G available. I'm not sure if this can be the case.
3G = UMTS connectivity available (probably WCDMA).
H = HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+ link up.
H comes up only on custom builds (but some european builds reported to show H - not sure about the credibility of such reports), and H comes up only when data transfer is initiated.

Thanks Jack, I had noticed that behaviour on some builds alright but not yet on Froyo.
Whilst there is a difference between H and 3G the H icon will not show up on "official" builds.
It was just a graphical change made in some custom ROMs.
When your signal changes from 3G to H there will be no indication, but it will still happen.

CM6 3g improvement?

Does CM make your reception better some how? I'm now getting H where I got 3g. I'm currently in Greece and I don't even think they have H here.

Cyanogenmod wiki:
Why do I see an 'H' for the network instead of '3G'?
"H" - HSDPA-mode
"3G" - UMTS-mode (slower)
The stock firmware shows "3G" when the phone is in either HSPDA or UMTS mode. The "H" differentiates it now.
so you understand why CM6 is showing you "H" instead of "3G"?

Please don't make useless posts just to raise your post count.
CM replaces the 3G icon with the H, there arent any improvements in the rom, you may have installed a new radio to cause a speed increase though

No, I just stumbled upon the answer and thought I'd post the answer in case someone else had that question. Which they have on a different thread.
I did notice better speed with CM6 RC2, Now I just flashed that Korean radio and I'm running RC3.
This much fun with a phone just isn't right.

[Q] HSPDA Icon Question

Any one know how the i9000 roms show "H" for HSPDA but the captivate shows "3g"? I looked in the framework-res.apk but the connection images look the same. Will much appreciate an answer.
It is the modem that gives hsupa "H" support, not the ROM. Unless the ROM is packaged with the reoriented kernel and modem for the I9000 it does not support hsupa. Captivate does not support hsupa by default unless you are using a different modem than the stock modem. I could be wrong but after months of mods to my phone and experimenting with different ROM and kernel packages this is my understanding. Also be careful when flashing kernels and be sure to use only those made to use with Captivate or you will have auto rotation and button problems.

what he said ^
H on the I9000 stands for HSUPA... not HSPDA...
EDIT: Also.. this sort of question.. belongs in the general questions forum

Exactly the opposite, in fact. HSUPA is not indicated anywhere in the notification bar GUI.

id10terrordfw is right. For the poster above, I am working on a custom rom and trying to figure out how to display the correct icons. So does it belong to dev section or not?

This is +1. H is just the 3g icon on the i9000. It has nothing to do with HSUPA. Even when HSDPA is enabled, the H is still there on the i9000 roms (try the i9000 rom with a captivate kernel and see what happens).
I like the H better, but I have no clue where to find it. Someone like DG, or someone who's torn the entire rom apart to find stuff, would know where it is.

Oddly enough the connection icons are the same on both roms. It must be controlled by something else that displays those icons.
On the i9000 the H icon only comes up when there is (a lot of?) data being sent otherwise the logo always shows up as 3G

This is not entirely true. HSUPA is 3.5g, 3g is 3g, and my phone switches between 2g, H, and 3g depending on my location and which the tower is supporting. My area supports all three and each shows up in my notification bar depending on which is being used. This is because I am running both an I9000 ROM and kernel with the JPM modem. I have all bandwidths enabled. It shows "H" even when no data is being transmitted.

ok, I'm going to try and clarify this, but the poster directly above me had it mostly right.
The i9000 ROM's are capable of showing G (GPRS), E (EDGE), 3G (3G), H (HSPA)... the reason our device will only show the first three and not H is because AT&T (and most US GSM carriers) have decided to lump 3G and HSPA in the same category. So when 3G is shown, you are likely already connected to an HSPA network, AT&T just considers them "close enough" to not need a different icon. This behavior can be modified, and I think DesignGears said it is a simple boolean fix in one of the XML files to allow both HSPA and 3G to be shown (I have not personally looked into this, but I see no reason why this wouldn't be so).
The European firmwares make the distinction because there are some places that are exclusively 3G and some places that are exclusively HSPA, and they can't be 100% certain where the phones are going to be sold, so they differentiate between the two. It has nothing to do with the fact that the icons are there, those are just pictures (they have no code).
Also, yes, this doesn't belong in development, General would likely be a better place.
When I had the froyo i9000 rom 2.2, Mine switched between H, 3g, and E, There were very noticable differences in speed when I was on H, 3g or E for that matter. when the H was on speed test would go up to 7mb and 3g like 1.7. hsupa and hsdpa is the same thing, u stands for upload and d stands for download. when you are on that and H is displayed u can get up to 7.2 mb at cap speed, but prob more like 3 mb to 6 mb on average. Those that are saying other wise maybe your wireless network hasnt been totally upgraded yet, I dont know but there are differences. The reason stock doesnt get it is because its not rolled out yet. The first thing to get true 3.5g or hsdpa is the air cards for computers, this came directly from a att general manager, then when systems are upgraded enough they will roll out ota's to the phones to beable to jump on 3.5 g U dont have to wait for it though u can do as some have said and use the modem for it.
HSDPA -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
HSUPA -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Uplink_Packet_Access
HSPA (when you have both HSDPA and HSUPA) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Speed_Packet_Access
HSPA+ (like T-Mobile is rolling out) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolved_HSPA
W-CDMA/UMTS (what all of these are a part of) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA_(UMTS)
No need to argue further.
My fault on my first post.
However... if certain I9000 roms choose to display H even when connected to 3G... couldn't we just swap out .png files in framework-res??
Look inside with zip... and pull out the drawables folder. Inside are all the notification bar icons for data. Replace the H files with the files for 3G... and shouldn't that fix it?

no i9000 ROM displays H when connected to 3G. 3G and H are two different things.

Paragon H/3G in status bar

I have been using Paragon RC5 for a while and just upgraded to RC6. This is a great rom and I love it! I have one question though, what is the "H" stand for on the status bar? I know the up and down arrows are obviously upload/download but why doesn't it show 3G instead of H?
HSDPA/HSUPA, is a feature of 2.2.1 roms. Sometimes you should see 3G unless they have taken that out of the rom all togethor.
Yeah, I see 3G pop up every now and then. So, even if it says H I am still running on 3G, correct?

Correct. Most carriers disable the faster H setting on their ROMs. Most ROM chefs enable it in theirs. If you're seeing it, that's a good thing.
