Is it OK to flash a non-eris/hero PRL? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering if it's OK to flash a new PRL that isn't from a Hero OR Eris. Only reason I'm asking is because there is a thread in the Evo forum about flashing an Alltel PRL, and now the Evo is using Verizon's towers and Verizon's signal, but the phone remains on Sprint. Only reason I'm asking is because the Sprint coverage where I live is pretty poor.

Yeah, it's ok.
A PRL is just a list of towers, nothing device specific.

I no longer have AT&T 3G network coverage ..

I have a Rogers G1 that I use with AT&T's service. When I first received the phone (yesterday), AT&T's 3G service was working fine and it even had an option to enable|disable the 3G signal in the settings. However, after I decided to flash the SPL, radio, etc. (after everything, I've decided to stick with Cyanogen 4.2.14.1), my 3G signal no longer works, as I only have EDGE coverage AND there is no setting in the phone that even mentions HSDPA or 3G enabling. I know it's not the ROM that did this, since I was using the Expresso, MLIGN's 3.3 and another ROM. So basically.. How do I get my 3G signal back??? Thanks in advance!

btw wrong section there is a questions and answers section for help. just so you know. Welcome to xda btw..
now on with other member flames.
Not sure how to help you. Wrong forum by the way. I used my Rogers Dream for AT&T 3G but I have noticed several things about it.
1. The build quality seems much lower than my ADP1. I put my ADP1 that I got in Dec. '08 thru hell and it is battered but not a single thing is wrong with it function wise. My Rogers Dream I had for 4 months and it already bit the dust. I took care of it like a baby, yet the bluetooth has failed, as has the microsd slot. I took it apart and swapped the sd board into my ADP1 and it worked fine, yet it fails in my Rogers one still yet. Damn you Rogers.
2. It always seems to show a low signal strength (~-100 dBm where my ADP1 gets ~-80 on EDGE and my Samsung flip-phone gets ~-75 on 3G all in one area)
I would recommend you try a reflash.

Yes, everyone keeps telling me the wrong forum. When I posted another question on another forum, NO ONE answered at all. Here, I get answers in 3 mins. However, I didn't mean to post it here (I will re-post this thread in the proper section). Thanks for your info! Except, I don't understand what you mean by re-flash.

I wasn't trying to be hateful or snarky. I was just stating that it was, unlike some people who just post "wrong forum jackass" & crap like that I actually tried to contribute something
And by reflash, I mean to try to reinstall another ROM. It could just be a temporary problem that reinstalling Cyanogen's ROM or any other ROM may fix.

Oh.. I know you weren't being "hateful or snarky". I was just saying what everyone else has told me. I hope I didn't come off as "hateful or snarky" either.
If that's what re-flashing is then I've done that plenty of times. Most of the time, I would wipe everything (except the last two settings - Battery & Rotation). I've flashed MLIGN's v3.3, Espresso ROM, some other random v2.3 ROM by the same creator as the Espresso and now, CM's latest (which is what I'm at now - Most stable and it's the most smoothest ROM I've used so far).
its a network issue i doubt anyone here could help at all
Heres your problem..
A g1 WILL NEVER fuction on ATT 3g. They use different bands that the G1 does not use. No matter what you think you may have had, you NEVER had att 3g coverage with a G1. It is an ATT problem, not a rom, radio or whatever problem. Once you unlock a G1 for ATT you say by by to 3g.
Dont belive me, use google and do a tiny ity bity search.

Actually it's not that bad lol. I live in the boonies about 60 mi. south of St. Louis & I have excellent 3G. I average about 120KB/s and on a good day I can cruise at 210KB/s. Not excellent, but when at my house my only other option is Hughesnet or Dial-up it's pretty dang good. Vzw has no service here & T-Mo barely has EDGE. Sprint is the only other 3G network here and I get about 60KB/s average on my EvDo card.

I REALLY hate when people try and give me info that they know NOTHING about. How are YOU going to tell ME if I had AT&T 3G or not? Don't you think I'd realize that!? Why else would I import a Rogers G1!? AT&T's 3G has a much wider spectrum than T-Mobile's, by the way.

So again, Im sorry for making a mistake and apologizing fo rit and Im sorry you prefer ATT.

-Verizon
-Sprint
-Tmobile
-A&TT
The top mobile carriers so I excluded any other ones.
I always got slow 3G on my old att phone but tmobile's is faster with great coverage for me and unfortunately bad for you.Not sure what desert wasteland your at that you cant get 3G(jk)...If you dial *#*#4636#*#* then select WCDMA only it should give you only 3G. Not sure if the feature is compat with Att too.

Fresh 2.0b question about radio update

Ok, So I have the new Fresh 2.0b ROM, right? But I have Cellular South as my service provider. Can I still flash the Radio update? I don't want to mess up my phone by bricking it because of my carrier. Yes, it is CDMA. Anyways, can I?
Someone, please correct me if Im wrong, but I do not believe that this radio will work correctly with a different carrier. I definitely wouldnt try it without being able to flash back to your original.

That's what I thought as well. That should really be specified in the thread of the radio update. It never specifies carrier. it just specifies "CDMA"
The radio update should work fine for Cell South.
The "big" carriers have enough buying power to get products in volume from the manufacturer. Smaller carriers, like Cell South, Alaska DigiTel, ACS, Bluegrass, etc. get their stock from a distributor who, with all those smaller companies buying, have enough customers to buy products in volume just like the "big" carriers. That's why there's no significant difference in the Hero between the smaller carriers.

Because it is said to have a better battery life
I am aware that it can not be undone. What do you mean? How is this so? I do not have Sprint
i dont see why one of the devs could pull the old radio image out and just flash it back..but i dont think anyone would want to...and it could be the radio update that is coming for sprint since alot of these new roms are based of leaks from htc and whatnot a couple weeks before the official update
I don't see why you'd want to Sprint update now that we have working 2.1 Anyways, RUU restores the stock radio, and it is probably inside the RUU.
yea i figured it wasnt permanant..but i like it it has improved my signal more than my battery life IMO but i wouldnt take it back cause now i get real strong evdo at work when i never got it at all which does inturn help battery life...also the devs on here will make the official sprint update look like a small town guinnea.

[Q] Horrific signal strength

I'm wondering if maybe I got a dud Hero. I switched from a Sprint Touch a while back and the other day I felt like playing with it again so I installed CM 6.1 on it. I noticed my signal was 100% and thought "That can't be right" so I check both the Hero and the Touch side by side in CM settings. The touch was at -51db whereas the Hero was at -100db. I flashed back to stock on the hero just to be sure and while there is nothing to tell me the exact signal strength in the stock ROM, on the Touch I still had full bars and on the Hero I only had two.
Is my antenna damaged? Is there anything I can do to fix my signal strength?

Flash the newest radio, and Kifno's tweak for increased bandwidth.
Kifno's tweak can be found in the Hero development forum. The new (1.5) version is being released soon so stay tuned for that, It's said to bring many improvements.

I am using both right now. My current radio is 2.42.02.10.29. I'm also using Kifno's latest tweak. My phone will frequently drop out of 3G and revert back to 1x. Its hell on my battery life and just damned annoying besides. I'm wondering if maybe the internal antenna is broken.

Bad idea.
(1) If switching to EVDO-only mode made your data faster, it probably* means that Sprint doesn't offer EVDO in your area; so now you're data-roaming on whichever provider has it in your area (probably Verizon). This is fine for a while, but if you use too much data this way for several months, Sprint can and will cut off your service.
(2) Forcing EVDO on all the time is going to be a battery hog, especially if the phone wasn't using it before for some reason.
(3) If you end up in an area with poor coverage, you may lose data altogether instead of falling back to 1xRTT.
*I said PROBABLY. Check Sprint's website to see your local coverage.

ive always had decent 3g in my area that just made it way better though and it dosnt say im roaming and they will call you if your roaming to much but they will never charge you atleast thats what i was told at a sprint tech store awhile back
im on nfx stock sprint rom right now and awhile back i remember i called customer care and they actually told me about the data codes sense i was rooted and i already had my msl number. what the person said i could try originaly is dial ##3282# and go evdo and change it to hdr only witch truely forces evdo only however u cant recive texts or calls but u can send them so thats only usuefull if your tethering. also they told me to dial *18 send and that will automaticlly connect u to the nearest cell tower.

Would you mind telling me where you are located geographically? I too recently discovered this setting must be set to CDMA only in my area. It's SUPPOSED to connect to 3G when no LTE is available, but for some reason that's not working in my area. And this is a very recent change. About 12 days ago I lost data and it took 3 or 4 days of reboots, reflashes, and phone calls to Sprint before *I* fixed it myself by selecting CDMA only. Sprint never bothered to suggest the change because it's not supposed to matter. I'm baffled by this so it occurred to me you might be in the same area as me.

Would you mind narrowing it down a bit? Are you in one of the areas served by nTelos? In central and SW VA, there are many areas that do not actually use Sprint towers. Sprint has some sort of partnership with nTelos and I happen to live in one of those areas. I have seen info that indicates nTelos will begin rolling out its 4G network in the latter half of 2013 and it occurred to me that the sudden necessity to set the phone to CDMA Only might be related to the early stages of this roll out. Almost as if they have started the process and are transmitting some sort of partial signal that makes the phone think there is a valid 4G connection, which therefore prevents it from looking for a 3G signal. I may be grasping at straws, but after switching to Sprint 3+ years ago on the promise of "the nations first 4G network" AND paying an extra $10 for the privilege, I would REALLY like to finally have access to something better than Sprint's abysmal service in Charlottesville. :crying:

Your towers may be broadcasting CDMA eHRPD (basically EvDo with an extra layer to help handoff between 4G and 3G). I discovered that with the SIM card in my phone being defective, I could not get data from any towers in my area even on 3G. This was confusing to me because I thought that the SIM card was only for 4G data. When I went to check the network type under the about area in settings, it said CDMA - eHRPD. When I switched my phone to CDMA only, the network type changed to CDMA - EvDo Rev A and my data started to work.
If you are using a phone with a broken SIM this could be the problem. My phone did tell me that the SIM card was not detected though, so I knew it was a problem from the beginning. Your issues could be with the towers in your area instead if your SIM is fine.
Also, there are rumors that Sprint may overbuild into nTelos territory since nTelos was not being obedient to Sprint's demands in rolling out NV at the start. This would be good for me as I travel up central VA once a year or so

Very interesting, thanks for the info! To cloud matters even more, the ROM I'm running right now, a 4.2.2 Sense 5 concoction, doesn't even *HAVE* a CDMA Only option.
And you're right about eHRPD, my phone is reporting that as well. Funny thing is, even without the ability to select CDMA Only, I'm having no problem at all with data now. Oh and one more thing that may or may not matter, I flashed a hacked PRL that forces roaming on VZW, so maybe it only works because I'm not even using nTelos' network at the moment.
All I know is that I want Sprint to get their $hit together in this area so I don't have to jump through hoops just to get reasonable service.

3G just dropped and hasn't returned??

I've been on Viper rom for the past several months. Today my 3g just dropped and it will not turn back on no matter what I do. Airplane, reboot..nothing. Anyone had this issue? Could it be a PRL issue?
It's most likely not a PRL issue. Try updating your data profile, but more then likely it's a Sprint issue and nothing to do with your phone. My 3g has gotten so bad I don't even try to use it anymore. If I can't connect to WiFi, I just shut data off completely. Sad that Sprint has come to that.

Nah I doubt it. My G/f has Sprint, her phone is fine. A couple buddies at work have Sprint and they're fine. It's been like like the last 10-12 hours at work, they use their phones just fine while my data is 100% gone.
I'm on wifi now, I did a profile update and nothing. This is crazy...it's almost like I have mobile data switched off but it isn't. Never had this issue before.

Did you try switching to cdma only in mobile data settings?

Hmm, that worked... I've never even messed with that setting, weird that it gets borked outta nowhere.
Thanks a ton for the tip, really appreciate it. It is odd to me tho

Check your SIM card. If your towers have been upgraded to NV, 3G AND 4G data won't work if there is a problem with the SIM card. People have said the SIM only affects 4G data, but this is not true if the SIM card is removed or not detected in an NV area. Usually the phone will tell you if there is a problem with the SIM card though.
I just went through this on my new Red HTC One because the SIM Wirefly sent with the device was defective. I noticed I could only get 3G from my Airrave, and not any towers around here. That is because the towers here are NV towers and it is connecting in CDMA eHRPD mode for 3G/4G handoff, which requires a SIM card to work properly. I flipped the phone to CDMA only and it is working fine now in EVDO Rev A mode.

same thing happened to me i actually took it to a repair place thinking it was messed up and the tech said that said that it was something to do with them testing the networks. an i know after a couple of days i was able to switch back to the LTE/CDMA mode with no issues.
Same here in los Angeles region
