Reception problem - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi - i have recently bought a tyrn ii.
I am currently on o2 network, but sometimes cannot send texts. I notice there are 3 symbols that appear next to the reception symbol, they are H, G and 3G. These change alternately. Are these interfering with my reception? if so whats the best 'one' to use and how do i turn the others off?
Thank you.

Maybe you should call them (O2) since it can be a network related issue not properly a kaiser device one.
3G is the fastest

Hmmm, it worked on mine. HTweakC did give an error message when I first started the program because my phone is a Trinity and not a Hermes. I just ignored that message. Then after turning off the HSDPA, I exited the program and did a soft reset by pressing the power button for 3 seconds, this way you make sure the change gets saved.
Excuse my ignorance: why would you want to turn HSPDA *off*? To save battery power?

When HSDPA is on, you can't receive a phone call, it goes to voicemail. There is no problem receiving a call in 3G or GSM Edge mode. I don't know if it is a problem with current systems or if that is the way it was intended to work, but I don't want to miss calls because my phone is receiving an email.

Huh? Is that a local thing?
Here in The Netherlands it is no problem at all. When I'm connected to UMTS or HSDPA (on the Vodafone network) I can be connected simulatinously.
So, I receive pushmail when I am on the phone or when I'm surfing I can be called at the same time.
adodesign and Matterhorn: that must be something to do with your provider. I am on T-mobile in the UK and I have no such issue. In fact I just tested it about 10 times in my house where there is a good HSPDA signal. I started downloading a large file at about 850 kbps and phoned myself - my Hermes dropped from "H" to "3G" and the call came through no problem. Once I hung up, it stepped back up to "H" and the download was not interrupted.
ok... i'm in the US using Cingular and i know they have HSDPA enabled in some markets. i have a HTC P3600 and would like to know how i can tell if HSDPA is enabled. if HSDPA enabled by default how would i know? if i have to manually enable it, what are the steps to activate it? thanks for the advice/guidance...

Well I guess it must be something to do with certain providers. I'm not the only one that has reported the busy problem with HSDPA. I'm going to test it again when I go into France to see if it happens there.
3G framework designed to able receive call while data transmitting. Whenever there is incoming calls, it will automatically disconnect data tranmission. However, this feature needs to be fully support by your local carrier.
In 2G network, you will not be able to answer call while data tranmitting. But you will still be able to answer call if GPRS is connected, with no data tranmisting. This is by 2G design, nothing to do with the carrier.
Hope this helps

Its a network issue.
I remeber reading on 3's Website here that it was an issue and a software Update on their network here in aust in April will fix it.
Speak to your provider and see if they are planning a network update soon.

Thanks for that news, I'll give them a call today . I think that it is likely that I'm not even supposed to be receiving HSDPA on this network. Before this phone was released it was reserved for one of those PC card wirless solutions for laptops, which they charge a fortune to use. The roms that come on the Swisscom Trinity has HSDPA disabled. They'll probably tell me that I'm not supposed to use it .
just few words to say that on the SFR network (france) , when i am connected in HSDPA , i can't receive any calls ... they are rediricted to my voicemail

Thanks for that info. I won't bother to check on SFR now. I'll just leave HSDPA switched off for the time being. 3G is good enough for now. This is an app that will turn off HSDPA http://www.fit4cat.de/thread.php?threadid=263 .
There is an application made for the Hermes that I am successfully using on my Trinity that switches 3G on and off. It also will switch off your data at night to save battery life. It creates an icon at the bottom of the screen for quick network change when you want a fast connection. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35394&d=1173876750 .

EDIT : i've just call my provider ,this behaviour is normal , an upgrade from them is necessary to make calls during hsdpa connection , thanx to tdub !

I have the problem, with HSDPA, on Sfr network, i've got a 3G plan, for access to wap! is impossible, but In Web all is allright, with very Hi speed i ever see on mobile
Is it really HSDPA?
I recently flashed my Orange UK Trinity (SPV M700):
WM6.1.Black Edition by Akeo
Radio Radio 1.50.08.11
For the first time I noted that HSDPA was available and then shortly after that I was missing a lot of call's. 3 out of 5 seem calls to go straight to answer phone. My concern is that this seems to happen mainly with calls from mobiles on the same network (Orange UK) and yet rarely (if at all) with calls from land lines. Is this perhaps a red herring?.
After reading this thread I'm hoping that HSDPA is the cause of the issue and that someone can explain how to disable HSDPA on the Trinity device?
I tried HTweakC 2.1b but no luck. HSDPA remained active.

Try re-flashing your Radio to another version, you can always flash back to the old one.
Here's the Downloads.
Thanks for a quick reply. But I'm from Pakistan and not using any of the networks mentioned in the download list. Does this affect in any way? Please also guide me which is the best one and can resolve my problem. Lastly, does this erase all data on the device?
Same Problem Is Here In India With The Same Radio.any Solution Please.
could try turning the 3g off, if thats on, i have that issue in the uk, dont miss a call, when in 2g mode
Dont have 3g here in Pakistan.
Maybe you are connected to the internet all the time. 2g network can to only one thing: internet or calls.
I have been using O2 Atom with WM5. Never had any issues with it. However, it is correct that the problem is only when there is an active GPRS/EDGE connection.

Diamond and UMTS is working fine? (Or worse than Cruise?)

Hello I bought the Diamond yesterday, I'm very satisfied except for the UMTS signal.
I already have a Touch Cruise (it didn't work in UMTS so HTC repaired it on warranty and now it works like a charm).
In the last 48 hours I had Diamond and Cruise one next to the other, and Diamond has always 2 lines less:
* when Cruise is in HSDPA with 4 lines, Diamond is in HSDPA with 2 lines
* when Cruise is in HSDPA with 2 lines, Diamond is in GSM.
Is this normal?
Many thanks in advance.
J.
Everyone has it i have also a TC and indeed, its shows always 2 lines more then the TD.
Same here my htc diamond has always two lines less than my htc kaiser.
The diamond has really a poor UMTS signal reception. I hope they will be able to boost it with a new ROM.
Same here
before with TC i got 2 lines 3G now non
Thanks for your feedback!
So it seems to be a common problem.
Today I checked during all the day, moving from a city to another city, half the time the Cruise had more lines, half the time they had the same.
Other feedbacks? Thanks
same problem here in austria. before i had full signal with my sony erricson t650i, now with the touch diamond i only have the half signal strength...
Well, it doesnt give many bars, but it works like hell here.
When using it as a modem (I often do on the road) I get speeds upto 150kb/s for browsing and emailing and that is just perfect for everything.
My 3G Reception is also VERY Bad.....
I´m using the latest Radio ROM 1.00.25.03.
Because of this weak 3G Recepion the Diamond changes to GSM very often, this eats the Battery up in about 6-8 Hours.....Even if I don´t play around much and the 3G Coverage here is excellent.....
Diamond: 1-2 Bars
Nokia E51: Always full Bars (-87dBm and up)
Hopefully Reception will be better with a new Radio ROM.
If it´s an Antenna issue.........DAMN!!!
I never had a Mobile with THAT bad 3G Reception.
BtW: GSM Reception is fair to good.... could be better also....
Poor 3G signal
That's right,
I have also very poor 3g signal, even though I live in the city area. I have also missed incoming/outgoing calls because the poor 3G signal.
That's not nice
same prob here (big city)
switched manually to gsm not to loose calls
Are you sure this is just 3G and not worse reception in general (ie due to smaller antenna in Diamond)?
in gsm mode i never experienced any trouble with calls.
in auto mode diamond switches to 3g (half signal strength), but one can't call me

Uh, this sounds even worse. Having a bad reception is one thing but showing a "fake reception" is a complete different level of bug.
Just to ensure that I did not get you wrong: You see a 3G reception (e.g. 2 or 3 bars) but the phone does not receive incoming calls and the caller is redirected to your mailbox instead?

yes, got me right.
in my case it's not the mailbox, just a message ("not available" or something like that) because of my settings, but that's petty.
thats why i manually switched to gsm. for using 3g (internet) i have to swith this back again.
annoying!

This should not happen, even when I have the minimum bars in 3G or H others can call me.
When you have full bars in 3G does it work?
same here, although i found that switching off umts and just using plain 3g solved the issues.

yes. when it's stable at full bars or even H, i can use it.
but i deacivated 3g anyway because of powersaving. only using it for web access.
there's a tool for switching 3g in comm manager easily, now i'm happy so far.
So, is it phone or is it just peace of s***?
Hi All
Do you have any fresh idea could it(lousy 3g signal) be hardware or software related issue?
The globe is full of small 3g phones without that kind of problem. That's why I really hope this issue could be fixed with the new ROM radio version...???
I hope I'm right, because if the pain is hardware related, we all have bought pretty expencive peace of crap -not the phone. It is not acceptable if the incoming / outgoing calls are missed!
Same problem, poor 3G reception .
Cruise was far better for receiving 3G signal.
Hope it is software only....

Orange Uk 3G not allowing calls and delayed txts anyone?

hi i have a touch diamond orange variety and when i travel to scarborough uk i dont get calls and will just get a txt 2hrs late saying missed call and i cant send msgs out.
ive tried my htc tytn 2 and thats the same and i tried my bros omnia and thats the same.
i was wondering if anyone else had same problem either in scarborough or anywhere else on orange uk?
ive tried numerous different radios etc
thanks for any help
rich
I'm on Orange in the UK and swapped to 3G as soon as I did I couldn't make any calls, turned out all my Phone settings were changed. On the services tab check Call Barring, Call Forwarding etc. I've gone back to my old sim only because the receiption for 3G was rubbish in my area. Hope you have better luck. tallen3
What do Orange have to say about it?
They blamed the phone, I managed to change the settings myself, Orange were less than helpful but probably about average for a phone company.
I was asking the OP!
But yes, unless you can actually see the mast with your naked eye 3G reception is a known issue with the Diamond. I have set mine to GSM only.

Orange 3G works fine for me without seeing the mast - even indoors. But that can't be the problem because if 3G reception is to weak or not available then it should revert to GPRS or Edge automatically and will still allow calls.
To the OP - is it all of Scarborough or just particular parts? Does it happen anywhere else in the UK?

The problem I have with 3G on my Orange Diamond is that although the phone just clings onto 3G indoors (about 1 mile from the nearest 3G mast) it drops down onto GSM as soon as I make a call - with associated momentary call interference - and drains the battery a lot quicker on standby (I'm syncing with Exchange every 15 mins 07:00-17:15 Mon-Fri).
If I'm 50 yards away from the mast I get HSDPA, which is handy when I'm in my car queueing at the tip, not...
hi i finally had a call from orange they now say its scarborough that doesnt have enough 3g masts and they have planning permission in for some more.
its strange everywhere else is fine even when i have lower 3g signal than scarborough.
they recommend i leave my handset on auto which doesnt work so was told everytime i go to scarborough manually turn phone to 2g.
not a perfect soloution, and i wonder why scarborough is like that? ever since they activated the hsdpa.
thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
If your phone won't auto switch between the two then it is faulty and Orange should sort it out shouldn't they? Or is it not their phone?

I am in 3G.
I have no problems when putting my sim in my tp2. And talking while surfing.
And i am not the only one. No one has givein a reason as to why.
Uh..unless you changed you radio settings to "WCDMA only" you should be able to talk and surf.
It should work. I do it all the time, but it is network dependent.
In case it works on your TP2 i suggest you check your settings.
Hey big guy are you using a t-mobile nexus one on AT&T? Or AT&T N1 on T-mobile? That used to send all my calls to voicemail while I was on the intarwebs

Incorrect. "WCDMA only" is still UMTS/HSPA (3G/3.5G in consumer speak), therefore you still get voice/data at once. I can only conclude that you're under the assumption that UMTS/GSM work the same way EVDO/CDMA does. On an EVDO network, all data goes through the EVDO network, while voice stays on 1xCDMA, because EVDO is an addon to 1xCDMA.
UMTS and GSM are two completely incompatible technologies that only share GSM backend features and a SIM card. The circuits in the phone are separate, the antennas on the towers are separate. You're either completely on UMTS for voice and data (inc. both at the same time) or you're completely on GSM (for voice or data but not both at once. In fact, if you're locked on to a strong UMTS signal, the parts of your phone that handle GSM shut down for power conservation and only wake up when your signal drops to check to see if you'll get a superior signal over GSM. It will do this periodically, but won't stay active for long unless your UMTS is so bad that you won't be able to hold a call. THEN your phone powers up and maintains the GSM radio, while putting the UMTS radio on standby, only powering it up momentarily to look for a better signal.
The only time you have GSM and WCDMA/UMTS powered on at the same time is during hand-offs from one network to the other. That's why staying in areas where you bounce between the two kills your battery so quickly, the radio is drawing roughly twice as much juice as it normally does, plus it's computing which one will do the better job for the moment. Even then, at that time, the phone and its OS will be using only one of the networks at a time, and if it's UMTS, you'll be able to hold a call and surf the web.

in my case using GSM Auto (prl) or WCDMA prefered I can connect to HSDPA but GSM is in emergency calls only, weird.
but I can do both on GSM only (GPRS/EDGE)

When you have bad reception, that's what happens. Normal and expected. During the call it won't re-negotiate 3G, only when the call ends.

Yeah, that is normal and it really sucks when you're on a long call. Once you lose 3G signal it's gone for good. I don't know if it's a network problem, or the phone, but it should be fixed.
