WM6: Ok, VPN: Ok, Remote Desktop: NOT Ok - HELP

Hello all,
I have been successful in loading the WM6 ROM: works great! I have been successful at using the phone for Bluetooth DUN. I have been successfull at setting up a VPN connection to my place of employment: I can look at the RRAS server GUI and see that I have established a viable connection.
What I have NOT been successful at is getting Remote Desktop to work. RD is one of the reasons I upgraded to this ROM. Has any one been able to get their Windows desktop on their Treo? If so, how did you do it?
I can't seem to find any pertinent information on how to make this work so anything you can tell me would be a great help.

thank you for the forum pointers. Alas, they did not help. I did try to load the cab file from one of the threads, but it loaded the same version of Remote Desktop Mobile that I already had. I still get the same errors encountered with the previous version. Maybe this behavior is due to the "unofficial" ROM not being fully functional in some way? I don't know. It would be interesting to hear from someone that actually got this to work.

PS: in occurs to me that this might be a routing issue in the 10.x.x.x/192.x.x.x space. I could verify this if there were a command prompt where I could run things like ipconfig, tracert, netstat, etc. Or a log file that could be viewed. Just wishful thoughts I suppose
PPS: Just found two great progs, one called VXIPCONFIG which give you the info you would get in you did an ipconfig /all. The other is called VXUTIL which you can do PING, TRACERT, WHOIS and a lot more. The utilities are available from http://www.cam.com/windowdsce.html.

I have been able to connect to remote desktop. What has been successful for me has been to already initiate my 3G connection then connect using remote desktop. It doesn't seem to be able to start up the connection itself.

I am doing the exact same thing: starting my 3G connection, then my VPN connection, and lastly Remote Desktop Mobile. The RDN ALWAYS times out with one of these two errors: "Connection Status - Cannot Connect. Likely reasons are: 1. Specified computer name or IP does not exist, 2. A network error occurred while establishing a connection." So, I'm kind of at a loss here as the troubleshooting tools available are not great. Thank you for the response!

Can you access a remote desktop when a VPN session isn't active? I have used the two separately without problems but haven't tried them together.

no, I cannot access any system. I have tried my home system (firewalls turned off and on). I have tried my work systems (VPN on and off). Nothing seems to work. It's really frustrating to have a tool that you know can help you, but it doesn't work: aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I'm assuming you're trying to use a local address because you are connecting with vpn first. Did you put the local address in the exceptions list? If not the vpn connection will disconnect anytime you try to use an address that is not in the exceptions list.
Exceptions list: start\settings\connections\connections\advanced\exceptions
then add the local url
Hope this helps. Used to be the problem I had when trying to use VPN.

yes, I'm trying to connect to a local addres, but that address isn't a URL. The address I'm entering is an IP address of the machine for which I want to get a desktop. Now maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding is that I can use Remote Desktop Mobile to get, say, a desktop/console of one of my servers.
I've been able to surf the web on the phone, I've been able to use the phone as a Bluetooth modem, I've been able to connect to each of my companies VPN servers. Still now desktop. Whether I enter a fully qualified domain name or an IP address it never works.
Now, I have a little more information. If I just connect to the AT&T 3G network I can do a traceroute to the VPN servers. If I then connect to the VPN (PPTP connection verfied and active) I CANNOT ping anything on the corp. net. It has to be a routing issue I'm thinking. It seems that it needs to be fixed on the phone side, but I can't seem to figure out where to do this.
Anyway, I appreciate the pointer about the URL exception list.

That's what mine looks like. Once I'm connected vpn wise into my 2003 server I can RDP into it and another XP machine on the network through the local IP. Only thing I can think of is if you have activesync connecting to an exchange server. It might disconnect the vpn. I think you've said you're verifying the vpn connections so I might look into the firewall on the computer or make sure RDP is on for the computer (although you've probably done that). Good luck though.

thank you for the screen-shot. I gave this a try, but no luck. We don't use exchange servers at work and I've verified that no active sync is active during the connect process. Having downloaded a couple of tools to help troubleshoot, I've noticed that I CANNOT ping anything on the internal network: this after verify that the VPN connection active and viable. I have also verified that each system that I am connecting to has RDP turned on. I guess I'll just keep experimenting. I just can't help but think that there is ONE LITTLE THING that is keeping this from working.

PS: What encryption level does the Treo 750 VPN app use? 56bit? 128?
PPS: Upon further testing... when I connect to the RRAS server (and connecting to the RRAS server has NEVER been the problem) on the West Coast (Windows 2000 Server std. SP4) I cannot ping the "inside" network. When I connect to the East coast RRAS server (Windows Server 2003 SP2) I CAN ping "inside" network. In either case I still cannot get a remote desktop.

Hi all,
After upgrading to wm6.1 on O2 Diamond unable connect to Remote Desktop.
When manually connected to Internet it works perfect, but from RD Client there is always an error (dial up or Proxy settings). All other programmes can always correctly initiate internet connection via GPRS/UMTS. Via Active sync RD works always.

Sorry, never got it to work. Call me a traitor, but I now have an iPhone and everything works the way I expect it... with two major exceptions: 1. no cut-and-paste, 2. can't be used as a tethered modem without jail-breaking the phone (which I'm not willing to do).

Similar problem HTC Touch HD
Hi all, sorry in advance if my problem ends up being because I've missed something basic; I'm trying to setup RDC on my HTC Touch HD with no luck. Computer name is right, password is right, IP is right. Fail message:
"connection status. cannot connect. likely reasons are: 1. specified computer name or ip does not exist. 2. A network error occurred while establishing the connection."
I'm connected to my WiFi network which also has the machine i'm trying to connect to on it. I've also tried when out of network range, connecting via 3G/HSDPA. Steps I've taken:
-Enabled remote desktop in system properties on target machine. Haven't added any remote users as it already allows me (admin on target machine) and I'm using those login details to access.
-Allowed RD in the packet settings of Kaspersky antivirus, using the address as the ip of my mobile, found by going to whatsmyip.com, and name as the name I've set on the device.
-Probably unrelatedly, I've also allowed the HTC to access the wifi through the MAC address access list
I can connect via a standard windows machine on the same router (which just needs the computer name, not the IP). Have found this useful as I had the details around the wrong way, but even now it's not working. Based on the tips in the link above, I'm under the impression that I should set things up thus:
Computer: the ip address of target machine
User name: EITHER my username OR MACHINENAME/User Name, e.g. John Smith OR JOHNSPC\John Smith
Password: pw
Domain: either machinename or blank.
Anyone know if this is right / which of the options for username and domain is right?

SlingPlayer problems?

Hi all, I have a weird problem.
I have a tilt and am using the HTC rom, I connect to wifi in my apartment and 3G or HSDPA when I leave the apartment.
When I'm connected through wifi, my Slingplayer works flawlessly, finds my slingbox, and plays the video. When I try to connect outside using 3G/HSDPA, I get "Cannot connect with current connection settings"
I know the Slingbox is working correctly because I can connect to it through a desktop PC without a problem, and I know that the 3G works fine on my tilt because I have no problem loading websites, using mundi, etc.
Any ideas? I've seen a couple other posts on other forums with the same problem but there were no responses on them.

Can you connect to anything else when on 3G?
Try your proxy settings
Did you change the default ports on the SlingBox config?
Are those ports (default or modified) open from the outside of your firewall/router?
If you have the ability to monitor inbound connections try monitoring while you connect through 3G and see if your device attempts on the correct port and that it is NATed to the correct IP and port.

I had exactly the same problem with my Belkin router. You need to set up a port on your router in order for it to work. I know on mine it involved setting up a virtual server.

I am using the TyTN II and I am having the same exact problems. I think AT&T killed access to slingbox somehow. I can surf the internet just fine, and then as soon as I start the slingplayer, my connection gets lost and my phone says "cannot sonnect with current connection settings." Any help would be appreciated, especially with the World Series coming up this week.

Possibly a silly point but can you definitely connect over the internet to it? Or just over your LAN?
There's a wizard that enables the port forwarding for you - (called Remote Viewing or something?) should be with the software for the slingbox.
Could be that your desktop is just going direct over the LAN?
Also, I had problems when I was just using the automatic settings to configure the box - in the end it works far better if you ignore the UPnP stuff, and use the manual setup process (or so I found). Again, the desktop software wizard steps you through this.

If you can connect over wifi at home, but not over wifi or 3g when away, then unless AT&T are blocking the ports, its more likely your router settings, as at home you are inside your LAN but elsewhere you have to go through your routers hardware firewall.
Just have a look at slingbox's help files.

SlingBox works fine on AT&T. Check your proxy settings on the phone. Try the "remove hidden proxy" cab. The home router also needs an outgoing port defined as well. Good Luck, I know it can work.

I will bet that it's your router/firewall blocking the incoming net traffic. Try connecting to it from a Friend's internet connection or a public computer at the library or something.

Had a similar problem with slingplayer mobile on my new HTC TouchPro- phone from Vodafone but I put in my T-mobile SIM as I wanted to keep the Web and walk.
Slingplayer worked fine from Vario3 with same sim but not from TouchPro. Eventually unticked the use proxy server in the connection settings and it started to work. Weird, as on the Vario the proxy box is ticked and it works.
Anyway, worth trying if anyone else is having problems.

One of two things, either you have not port fowarded your router to allow the Slingbox to be remotly viewed, go to portfoward.com for exact instructions for your specific router, or your hidden proxy is messing with it. More than likley its not port fowarded correctly. BTW...when your in your home network, i.e... using WiFi, it will work without the router being fwded because your slingbox is already inside your home network. When coming from the outside of your home network through 3g or whatever your router has to allow access to the slingbox.

Help in getting Wifi to work at School

Well, I am having trouble getting my Wifi internet to work at my college (University of Tennessee). I've gotten to work at my house, but not here and UT OIT would not help me for some reason.
I can see the campus Wifi name on my phone "nomad" and I can "connect" to it. However, if I get on explorer, it won't go to any of the sites. Is there any thing I should do in the settings to allow me to connect to the Wifi internet?
NOTE: For laptops, we usually have to go through registration to connect to the Wifi intenet. Maybe this is why I cannot connect to my phone? Someone said he had to get some insider in the OIT to get his palm polit registered in order for it to work.

some campus' require you to register your mac address with the school's system.
And some require you to login to the school whenever you connect to wifi.(prompts login when launch browser) This may require javascript so make sure its enabled/ use a browser that has javascript support.
As for the other possibilities, i don't know b/c i haven't encountered them.
But following the same registration steps as if it was a laptop should do (most of the time).

Remote Desktop

Hey all.
I've tried searching Google and the XDA, but I still can't seem to get my remote desktop to work.
I'm using the AT&T version (Fuze) and Windows XP Media Center Edition. I went through the steps on my PC to enable and allow RD in the system and firewall sections, and still keep getting the "Cannot connect" error message when I try and use RD on my Diamond. Any advice?

If it's anything like T-Mobile in the UK, Remote Desktop may be something blocked at the carrier.
I managed to get around it using an SSH tunnel. It's not actually as difficult as it sounds I describe what I did in this post:

Before that I'd try connecting to remote desktop through a wifi connection which you know allows RDP, just to make sure your cellular network is at fault. If it is, you could try complaining - some people on T-Mobile UK have had RDP enabled on their "standard" data contracts which aren't technically supposed to have it from what I have heard.

See if another computer can remote into your computer. It might not be an issue with your phone.

I was able to connect using another computer in the house...they're not networked but using the same internet connection. Gonna try and have my cousin connect to my comp from his house when he gets home...but so far it doesn't seem like it's my computer...

try it without the router. u probably need port fordwarding.

You will also need either a static ip address from your isp or setup dynamic dns resolution (i.e dyndns.org). If you have a dynamic ip address the ip address of your router is issued by your isp every time you connect(not neccessarily a different ip every time, but it might be). As mentioned above you will aslo need to setup port forwarding on your router for port 3389 (default rdp port) to the ip address of the machine you want to remote onto.

I'm also having problems getting my remote desktop to work. Been trying to connect since I picked up my Fuze on the 11th.
I have three different computers that I can successfully administer via my desktop. I've tried using 3G to connect, no success. I've tried using Wi-fi to connect, no success. I've used local computer names, IP addresses, properly forwarded ports --
It has to be a setting I'm missing on the phone. Any ideas? TIA

VPN access/useragentswitcher/ or a way to bypass isp packet sniffers.

Is there any way to connect to internet via VPN (PPTP, L2TP-IPSec, or OPENvpn). Is it possible to install the necessary system/binary stuff to be able to so through adb, ssh, or telnet. I am connected to the internet through my phones hotspot, my laptop is connected to VPN. And when I am not connected to VPN for any reason I can make the chrome useragent changer to appear as an ubuntu or linux machine running chrome. When the content being requested is local on laptop plex media server and requesting it through patched plex it can play just fine, and that is with the laptop connected to internet via VPN, when I try to play something on plex that is streaming it just hangs like it wants to play but doesn't load. when I attempt to play streaming media via AVIA I get sent to the 4gLTE ISP provider (tmobile) upsell page that appears when they sense that you have something connected via wifi hotspot tether. I think that when plex is hanging at the loading page that it is also getting the upsell page but it just doesn't show up on the screen. If it is possible to make the CC connect through VPN or change the user agent of the chromecast I should be able to bypass the upsell page that is saying I can't connect via wifi tethered devices. This makes me think that the dns servers I have set in eureka web panel may not actually be making their connection through the servers from openNIC that I set it to use. The chromecast can communicate with my laptop when it is connected to VPN simultaneously without a problem.
Is it possible to innstall the privateinternetaccess PIA VPN app on the chromecast and add it to the eurekarom whitelist? or any openvpn app will work so other people with different vpn providers can also connect with the correct configuration files in place. Or does anyone know how to make the chromecast go through VPN that is active on phone, like the way a router that is connected to VPN makes all of the clients connected to it go through the VPN without the need to sign in to the vpn on each device.

I'm also tethering via T-Mobile & ran into the same problem as you !!! What I've done before the 15250 update was run an app named Network Spoofer downloaded from blackmart app // I turned hotspot on my phone & my Asus Tf700 was connected to the WiFi created by t mobile I used VPN unlimited & while its connected // I ran the Network spoofer app & I either use adblock *** or redirect traffic through phone - this being the most often used option !!! After selecting redirect // I selected default gateway // I then chose the IP address that my chromescast is using // the chromecast name under IP address sometimes doesn't show up // so you'll have to know what your chrome cast IP address is // you can find this by using the chrome cast app !!!

The network spoofer app, found on sourceforge doesn't function correctly on nexus 4, at least not for me.

I tried Network Spoofer and used Redirect Traffic Through Phone and give it the ip address of the the laptop that hosts Plex Media Server, it didn't work. Even the browser on this laptop would bring up the T-mobile upsell page. It seems this feature would simply let everything pass through the phone.
Any other suggestion?

Thanks for the info. It seems step 3 above is to turn the laptop into a wifi hotspot. However, In my case the laptop is already visible throughout the whole network because it's attached to the router via an ethernet cable. The router gets its internet from the USB port attached to a smart phone and all devices attached to the router.
Based on your instruction (step 2) is to connect to a vpn. I will try to run Hotspot Shield on the laptop to see if that helps. My router is an Asus wl-520gu running DD-WRT so I think it has builtin VPN server, I will try that too.
By the way, did you get your Plex Server to work without T-mobile upsell? Thanks

This might not be directly related but here is a little something I learned....
I have PMS with a VPN. There are a few things you need to set up before you can get it to work. (Also works for vudu)
Basically, the VPN won't work because it needs access to a few IP addresses that it can communicate directly with the myplex servers but not through the VPN. I did tons of packet sniffing to figure these IP addresses out..
What happens is, if you are connected to the VPN, ALL outgoing traffic goes through the VPN and the Plex servers don't understand where that traffic came from and will block it. If your server is reported as being at one address and the traffic comes from another, that makes it look like something is spoofed.
If you have a firewall or VPN that can separate your traffic, I have the IP addresses for you.
The good thing is, the IP address ranges that you'll input, don't effect how your channels are retrieved; meaning that you can still get international channel content from channels like BBC iPlayer or CBC.
I had to use a very special feature on my firewall called ISP Redundancy and route traffic to certain IP ranges directly to the source. This also helped with Verizon FiOS throttling stuff like Netflix and Vudu.

Thanks for the info. I'm ordering a new, more powerful router and should have it by tomorrow. I will be using DD-WRT firmware on this new router. DD-WRT should have builtin VPN and firewall. I've been reading on the firewall features, and it seems that it allows routing traffic both ways based on ip addresses. What I'm not sure about his whether or not the routing is running inline with the vpn or can be set to run parrallel so we can have some traiffcs encrypted and some are not.
So for the exception to the IP addresses that need unencrypted communications, do they require both ways (from internet to Plex and from Plex to internet) or just one way?

They need to run in both directions. I'll give you the IP ranges when you are ready, but be prepared to run wireshark to sniff out more IP addresses if myPlex doesn't connect

Hi abuttino,
I bought an Asus RT-N66U thinking I was able to use Android usb tethering (Asus said that it could) but I haven't been able to get it going. I must be able to use this router with usb tethering first before configuring VPN. Thank you. I will keep you posted.

Does the RT-N66U have a server and dlna function that can be used with Bubbleupnp?

Thanks for the info. It seems step 3 above is to turn the laptop into a wifi hotspot. However, In my case the laptop is already visible throughout the whole network because it's attached to the router via an ethernet cable. The router gets its internet from the USB port attached to a smart phone and all devices attached to the router.
Based on your instruction (step 2) is to connect to a vpn. I will try to run Hotspot Shield on the laptop to see if that helps. My router is an Asus wl-520gu running DD-WRT so I think it has builtin VPN server, I will try that too.
By the way, did you get your Plex Server to work without T-mobile upsell? Thanks

Sorry for the untimely response...
in step 2, in your case you would need to connect your router to VPN
or
Connect computer to VPN, create hotspot and have your chromecast connect to newly created hotspot but this way would defeat the need to use the router. This the way I have it. There is also an app named klink that may allow you to connect phone to VPN and push all traffic through VPN but I do not know how well it works or if it will work with chromecast.

You may need to update the routers firmware. Or install one that will allow it.
