wireless tether cuts out at 1.98MB-0.0kbps - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can connect and disconnect from tether just fine but while it's running, it will sometimes go to 1.98MB or sometimes lower/higher then it will just cut out.
Under the "Down", the number in green will say something like 1.98MB and under it, it just stops at 0.0kbps. and the upload stops too.
I've wiped and flashed Darchdroid 2.6.4 and wiped and flashed DarchDroid 2.7 and i get the same results. i've also got the latest Wireless Tether from the market. 2.0.2.
reboots dont seem to help me either. anyone have any suggestions?
Edit: with simple browsing, it takes longer to cut out but cuts out none the less. when i stream a YouTube video...it cuts out every time and wont restart unless i manually turn off tether and turn it back on.

I've heard that the wireless tether in the market has lots of problems. I DL'd my wireless tether from google code and it works great. Here's a link -- http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ .

USB tether w/o Root. PDAnet for Android Available now!

Hey everyone, PDAnet is now available for android!
http://junefabrics.com/android/index.php
PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone's firmware in order to work. It is just a regular Android application that works on all Android phones as-is. Currently this initial version supports USB tethering on the T-Mobile G1 phone. Tethering is secure and will also charge your phone at the same time. Your phone can either connect to 3G data or WiFi.

It works perfectly, and root access is not required.
Enjoy!
Good find! Works best with Opera browser (other browsers such as IE and Firefox, won't display pictures for some reason...) Has some connectivity issues when using longer than 5 minutes (yes, I have enable usb bugging enabled and stay alive while connected via usb) All and all, a good program for your laptop without draining your G1 or when the REAL internet goes out. Good find! Thanks! Also, incredibly simple to use!!!
EXE installer? WTF?! How does it work? Does the program require something on the computer-end too?
I'm Linux user, so I can't use it?
Yes, it seems to be only compatible with windows. Since you're in linux, you may try running it through WINE to see what happens.

Did you experience the pictures not loading problem also while using IE or firefox?
this doesn't really seem to work yet
I was able to install it without much trouble and the initial connection looked promising (well, some pages came up anyway).
It was basically impossible to connect to Speedtest.net however and Speakeasy only rated my connection at 287/283 kbps at best (the G1 was on WiFi). I tested it again with the G1 on 3G and got a 409/330 kbps (doesn't that seem weird that it would rate better on 3G?) but then it seemed to stop connecting somehow and I had to restart the program and reestablish the connection on the PC. After a few more minutes it happened again. I would call this basically not useful at the moment, but I hope they can work the bugs out and get some decent speed out of it.
For reference, using Tether WiFi to connect to the G1 over 3G Speakeasy rated the connection at 699/316 kbps. And in my experience it's stable/consistent.
As a disclaimer, this was on my work laptop which has some pretty hefty encryption software installed. While this may be the problem, I didn't have any trouble connecting initially (multiple times).
Additional:
Their "reviews" section is just "customer testimonials", as my honest yet critical assessment of the app's inability to perform as intended was NOT posted and they didn't even bother to drop me an email to try to sort out the problem. I hope they can improve on the app, but they're quickly losing my respect and interest.
I just got this. I dl it to my sd card, connect phone to pc w usb, ran exe through windows. Installed program automatically onto phone. Windows asks to install driver for g1 and it does the work from there.
It seems to work ok, the first few tries on my desktop it would disconnect after a few minutes, restarted phone and its been better but still only seems to stay connected for about 20 min, which should be ample time to do alittle websurfing without getting mad about disconnects.
well they might not have replied because they are aware of the problem, and they clearly state that this is beta software. if you look at the known issues the first one is about the connection dropping and having to reconnect.
once they work out the bugs this software will be pretty useful because of how easy it is to use.
if only i could plug the g1 into the 360 would save me $100...or if i could share the connection with my windows media desktop(i use it as a media server for my xbox and its not even close to a internet connection).
i tried to connect it but it does the network doesnt have sufficient MTU settings. xbox live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364.
darn.
ill be watching for updates though, should be useful once fully operational.
i've been using mine for a while now...no problems once i turn off the wifi switch on my laptop...recently when i plug it in tho, it says PDAnet is expiring soon...is this supposed to be a paid app?
This app is gay... It was pretty good at first... but once the guy updated to r1.5... its been acting gay... it would come up with random blockings... it blocked www.google.com... wtf?... and wikipedia... yahoo answers... so I just got root and installed WiFi Tether for Root users... works way better and doesnt have blocks...
USB tether 4.2.6
This is supposed to be plug and play. A lot of people have said it's great. I have not been so fortunate. Anyway, could someone give me directions on how to use this. 1. plug in phone via USB. 2. settings/wireless settings/ internet tether (on). 3. Go to PC and click on G1Tether click connect. For me this does not work. Help.
This application is a fine hold-over for people who are too stupid to get root, but it is a VERY VERY poor imitation of tethering.
1) A real tethering solution will NOT require proprietary crap to be installed on the CLIENT.
2) Wired or Wireless tether for root users *IS* a *TRUE* plug-it-in-and-it-works solution. Run the program on the phone, plug in the wire, and you're done. No weird nonsense to be installed on the computer.

Wireless Tether problems

Yesterday I flashed the "Sprint 2.27.651.6 STOCK Deoxed w/apps2sd 6/18/2010:Update 2" ROM and the wireless tether wouldn't work. When I try to start it simply says "Unable to start tethering! Please try again!"
I gave up and went back to the Fresh ROM but this time flashed 2.1.2 instead of the 2.1.1 that I was running.
I am still getting the same message now even with the Fresh ROM. Any ideas what went wrong?
No idea, but did you try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it as well as rebooting the phone? That might help if you haven't tried it yet.
Try one of these
I currently use the 1.6 version for wireless tether. It might have to do with the different kernel (anyone can step in and correct me here) but I have had situations where one release of WT didnt go with the ROM I had just flashed.
Using pure hero 2.0.9 and my wifi tether 1.6 caused my phone to turn into a pocket fireplace. Since the option to uninstall 1.6 was not there I simply removed the apk for it, then installed 2.0.2 which gave me tht "unable to start tethering error. So I uninstalled it through settings-apps. When I then installed 2.0.5 pre 5 or whatever it is, the new binaries were installed and it now works. Gotta jump through some loops to get everything from the previous version uninstalled, but in the end 2.0.5 runs way cooler and even has the battery temp gauge built in.
Has anyone got the encryption to work on the hero though? I use access control but I get so tired of seeing my neighbors trying to get on my internet with their ipad.

LOL..I haven't even tried and no one has tried to access my WIFI here. I even opened up my Wireless router at home so anyone can use it, but no one has even tried.
I usually install the 1.6 wireless tether app, but I also have not tried the AOSP Roms or an overclocked one so I don't know if it would or would not work with those.

1.6 on the pure hero 2.1 OC would drain the battery faster than it could charge even with overclock widget underclocking the cpu. The phone also felt like a frying pan. It was the reason I went back to pure hero 2.0.9 without OC. On the OC 2.1 I also noticed that when using any of the 2.0.2 or 2.0.5 wifi tethering you couldn't turn off tethering. If you tried to stop tethering it would freeze the phone requiring a battery pull, if you just end the process in autokiller it appears to close but continues to run in the background.
Anyway, I found a link to wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre3-test3.apk and tried it out. After I changed the channel my SSID changed to what I had it set to and all of a sudden I had a wireless AP, infrastructure mode. No more adhoc networking. However the encryption still doesn't work and trying to get a nintendo ds to connect is not working yet, guess I can look at that later.
In case anyone wants to try out the newest test version:
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre3-test3.apk
I went back to Fresh 2.1.1 and it is now working again. I'm going to wait till Fresh 2.3 comes out and upgrade to that. If I still have an issue I'll try the newer version of wireless tether.
Thanks for the replies,
I use either DamageControl 2.9.1 or Darchdroid 2.7 and android-wifi-tether 1.6. It works great for me, doesn't drain the battery too much, doesn't turn my phone into a handwarmer, turns off and on fine, ignores access control warnings when I don't want to see or hear them. Maybe I'm the lucky one.
If I'm using the wireless tether at home I plug my phone into the wall and set it in front of a fan. I can run it all day and it won't get hot. Since it is usually faster (2Mbs-5Mbs) than my dsl I only use it when downloading files.
there is a version in the market again..it ended my freezing issue..

[Q] wifi tether issues, rooted NC + Droid 1

Brand, spanking new NC, came with updated software version already installed. Freshly rooted. Won't recognize ad hoc networks, of course :-(
Already tried the most up to date wpa_supplicant file fix, to absolutely no avail. Using rooted droid 1, with well-functioning wireless tether. Barnacle also a no go.
Any suggestions would very appreciated. Pulling my hair out, one by one, getting balder...balder.......

What does this mean?
Thanks for your help. What I mean is that the wpa supplicant fix (as described in previous threads - I'm using the Droid 1 browser or I would link back to that xda thread - sorry!) produces no effect. When the NC scans for wireless sources it recognizes many hotspots. Including my home wifi router. It simply will not list the phone's ad hoc signal (called either android tether or barnacle, depending which turned on.) The winbox connects just fine, so I don't think it's the phone's signal.
Others have used the wpa supplicant fix and their NC has worked well, but from what I can tell, they have NC's that were not upgraded to latest version, or had upgraded themselves. I wonder if brand new NC with the upgrade installed, needs a different fix. Not to be paranoid, but the wireless tethering apps have fallen out of favor with the powers that be. Maybe there is more disabling going on --- or I could just be doing something wrong. (Would not be a surprise)
Has anyone with a NC that came with the update pre-installed been able to get wifi tether? Using a phone with the paid wifi hotspot function will work with the NC. However, the droid 1 does not have a paid wireless hotspot option (it's too ancient, apparently). I had to sideload the wireless app to my phone, as it's not available on the market anymore, andit works well - just not with NC, even with the standard wpa supplicant fix.
Would upgrading the NC to CM7 take care of this issue? I'm a children's doc with skimpy hacking skills, & am a little afraid to try the procedure. Like doing an appendectomy with without knowing human anatomy

Wireless tether is working perfectly for me with CM7 right from the get-go, however....It does not work with Honeycomb at the moment (and I have not done the supplicant fix yet).
Thanks, hockeyfamily. I should probably go ahead and do the CM7 ROM.
update
Still have rooted v 1.2, not yet CM7. What finally worked for enabling ad hoc wifi, was deleting everything i had done previously, redoing it over again, & using Barnacle. The Wireless Tether app just giving a message to the effect that it was 'connected, but no internet.'
I updated to 1.2, rooted with an early version of MN, have an Eclair phone running Barnacle and this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872521 works great for me.

[Q] Cannot get working wireless tether

I've been trying many multiple things to get wireless tether to work. I currently have CM7 installed and have tried Wireless Tether for Root (versions 1.6, 2.0.7, and 3.1b2) and I've tried Barnacle Wifi Tether ver 0.6.7. In both apps, I can start tethering, but I can never see the phone from any other device (Win7, Evo 4G, iPod, Xoom). I also never see any data being transfered (up or down).
I swear I used to have tethering working on my Hero before, but I just cannot get anywhere with it. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make a Nandroid Backup!
Then Try Flashing a Different Rom, This way you can possibly determine if its the Rom, or whatever else that it may be!

Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually the last thing I tried before I posted my question. I tried the Toast Hero 2.4.0 ROM and that didn't make any difference. I still could not get anywhere with any wireless tether, couldn't see it, and it never reported any data transfer.
Any other suggestions?
Kushdeck ftw. I tether everyday. Great rom too.

Don't know if your Big on Sense Roms? But you could try my ExEnHeroC Rom... I'm Sure that Tether works, at least for Mostly everyone that I've spoke to! It should also work on the SenseFroyoV8.1 or V8.5 Roms too!
Also what Tether App are you using?
Good Luck!
Thanks everyone for the help. I think I figured out the issue. I think my issue is that the Hero can only do Ad-Hock connections. Am I correct in that? I was trying to connect to the Hero with another Android phone (HTC EVO) and a Xoom. It appears that neither of them support Ad-Hock connections.
Am I correct in all of this? Can the Hero support non-Ad-Hock connections?
hero only supports adhoc signals
Well, shoot. I thought for sure I tested it on a Win7 laptop and an iPad. I guess I didn't.
Does the bluetooth tether option work with the Hero? Thanks for all of your help with the WiFi option.
apple devices and windows will conect to it fine linux has issues.
I never had problems with Linux.
Oh, how I love my Evo 3D. Hotspot is so much better. Especially with 4G. I have my blue ray/ netflix player tethered to it to watch netflix.
"Damn you look even uglier in 3D"
im not sure about other linux distroes but on ubuntu at least it always just hangs on connecting then itll disconnect itself after five minutes or so. usb tether always worked fine though.
Have you tried PDAnet(Bluetooth&wired) ? If you don't want to switch ROM's just for tether. I've had it just over a year & am very happy with it especially after this last update.

Google's WiFi Tether app

Has anyone been able to get any version (2.0.7 or 3.x beta) of Google's WiFi Tether app working on their rooted Droid Bionic? Link to app
It didn't seem to work for this guy at the end of the video: Link
For me tethering is critical for work and I don't want to activate my Droid Bionic (which is coming tomorrow) until it can be confirmed working. Will keep using Thunderbolt for now... I can also imagine this is a huge issue for many other users.
However, I am aware that Motorola devices need some kind of device profile in the "Change Device-Profile" option in the settings of that app, has anyone played around with that, maybe choosing the Droid X or other Droid?
Any feedback greatly appreciated...
I hope you find a solution soon, I also have the same problem
Don't bother until a custom ROM comes out that can "hide your ass".
Since it is for work, paying for the monthly tether should be a business expense.
I tried some of the work-arounds on the net... barnacle did not work for me... choosing the droid x profile in device setup at least showed my wifi hot spot, but I could not obtain an IP... I had also noticed errors about dhcp in the log.

exactly, in the mean time your going to be stuck using PDAnet and a USB cable.
Got it, rooted it, figured it out. Use version 2.0.7. Change the LAN option to 10.10.1.x
Also it only works in ad-hoc mode but at least its a start. I'm sure updates will fix it.

Can't get 3 beta to work at all but it doesn't offer anything other than ad-hoc mode also. Also doesn't show data going through on the app. But hey at least it works.
Can anyone confirm the 2.0.7 wireless tether working?
not working
2.07 not working for me even using the 10.1 network. clients fail to obtain an IP address.
Same problem here - wifi tethering not working...
The newest 3.x didn't work for me. Has anyone tried manually setting the client's IP/Gateway/DNS? I don't remember what the dhcp issued on my incredible, otherwise I'd go grab my laptop and mess around with different static settings.

It takes a long time I noticed. Wait for the little blue notification icon to appear that shows the device is connected. Can take as long as 3 minutes sometimes but it works for me I assure you. The key thing is the 10.10.1.x network which is still unblocked because VPN's can use that network, anything other than that won't work.
I can't get wifi tehthering to work but just using the phones built in usb tehering option works and does not send me to a page to subscribe for tethering. Don't know why this works but if I try the built in wireless tethering it says I have to sign up. EDIT Was working on launch day but tried again today and won't work so I guess the system wasn't updated the first day I tried it.
Hi,
I found way to enable Hotspot without Verizon Provisioning. I used SQLLite Editor to modify settings.db for "Settings Storage" application ( com.motorola.android.providers.settings ). Set entitlement_check to 0 and reboot the phone.

I just tried this. It appears to be working. I was able to connect and browse from my laptop. Now the question is, does Verizon still know I'm tethering even though I'm not paying to tether?
I second. Works for me a well, with no warning or pop up. Cudos to you my good man

btw, WOW. Ive never poked around the databases like that. Everything from the hdmi overscan to wifi info is in there. That is So cool.
Works for me too! However, only works properly with WPA security. If Hotspot is set to "open", you can connect but get no internet...
