random reboots requiem - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im considering taking my htc cdma hero back to sprint because it keeps rebooting on me, in the middle of important usage. is it possible rooting might fix this issue? id understand if it wouldnt, because it all reality, this would be a manufactures defect, right? id be more than entitled to a new hero, and rooting would really only slim my chances of getting a replacement, correct?
another issue is lag. i cannot believe how slow my phone has become, its honestly a little sickening. ive been reading all about JIT, and over clocking...its benefits, and its downfalls. im between a rock and a iphone with this one...
would it be wrong to root, see if it fixes my issue, and if it doesnt, install a gsm radio to brick so they'd never know? their perfectly aware of my issue, their the ones telling me to come get a replacement...i just dont want a refurb. i cant see it being considered wrong, as in the end they'd be getting a bricked hero no matter what; wouldnt i really be helping? i dont see them reselling a fried phone, id be saving someone the hassle, right? how many people are working on a refurb and not noticing the difference?

just root it. stock rom is fast as hell until you put a couple apps on it and then it's slower than cold molasses. Plus you can get rid of those bs sprint apps if you choose. get live wallpapers and so fourth plus 2.2 sooner or later which our phones will never see by sprint

So I'm Thinking About Buying A Nexus One....

Okay, so I’m thinking about buying a Nexus One and have a few questions to ask before buying it. Please understand that I have never used Android before and this will be my first time. Here they are…
1. Does rooting void my warranty? Like, if I decide to root the phone, will my warranty no longer be valid? Also, what exactly is rooting?
2. Does using a rooted phone vs. a non-rooted phone have any differences besides having access to root files? Like, is a rooted phone slower or have any problems? What are the pros and cons of a rooted phone vs. a non rooted one?
3. Does sense from let’s say the Desire ROM, run as smoothly on the Desire as it does on the Nexus?
4. What are the pros and cons of the Nexus One?
5. How durable is the nexus one, I saw some article where the LCD supposedly cracked for no reason which I don't believe but...? I do take really, really good care of my phones and baby them but I’d still like to know. I live in south Florida where it’s really humid (and HOT, 103 degrees at 3:00 today!!) and had a moisture incident with a Tilt 2…. Especially since it’s summer and rains quite often in afternoons and then the suns comes back up which makes it really humid and miserable….
6.Does anyone regret getting a Nexus One and wish they got something else…? If so why, and what?
That’s about it…sorry if I‘m asking really common questions that get asked a lot but, I’m new to Android and curious before I make the switch. If there is anything essential a newcomer needs to know that I didn’t mention please tell me, I’d really appreciate it!
Go for nexus one, its amazing with Froyo 2.2, no phone currently beat nexus with froyo 2.2, and if u got built model other than ERE27, you are bound to root it to get Froyo 2.2, which is worth the unlocking. And as for unlocking it void your warranty.
And yes of course nexus one is best phone ever, current owner of nexus one, and iphone 3gs, i would like to say Nexus One can outperform iphone anyday with froyo 2.2. Except of some apps. but dont worry Android Market is catching up, and soon it will match quality apps like in iphone. Although i miss my Skype on Nexus but there are alternative to workaround. but with Google Voice who needs skype.
I dont know if it will answer your each and every question but i would simply suggest 529 USD well spent on NEXUS.
Go with your gut

BRO I have Skype on my nexus. Just type in Skype android download on google and you'll get the beta. Its the best.
no - and why
no, i would not recommend a N1 for anyone, anymore. here's why:
3G. the phone drops 3g signals constantly, without warning, causing any/all network traffic to halt. youtube, phone calls, pandora, voicemail, calendars, sync, all of that fails when the 3g signal dies.
now, for clarification, when 3g drops, the phone is sitting on a shelf/table, with four bars. four. 4. excellent signal, no UFO's flying over head, nothing. it completely stops making traffic, and forces you to restart the radio (goto airplane, then exit airplane mode) before packets start moving again.
i've been using the n1 for about 3 months now, and it's an AWESOME smartphone. the roms are fantastic, the apps great, but 3g is rediculous. it's hardware, and it's really bad.
would i buy a revision 2 of the nexus ? ONLY and only after a few other thousand other people report that the 3g problems are gone.
just to be clear, 3g is the one and only gripe (besides a physical keyboard) i have with the n1.
your other questions will be answered shortly. ;-)
Okay, thanks for the answers guys but so far only one of my questions was answered!

rooting can void you warranty, people are having hit and miss experiences... in the end, it is up to htc... like this site told me, play with it, use it.... make sure the phone is solid then root.
I have never used a desire, but I did try the senseui rom, it looked and felt great... but it was 2.1...
my non root nexus was great, a pleasure to use... and that is coming from my 3gs.... it was not as smooth or polished as my 3gs, but it was beyond acceptable.... but I wanted to root because I was tired of waiting for froyo 2.2... which adds beta flash support. So I did it, and now its fast, smooth and has many more options... I can play most flash websites and even some flash games, stream sports games and my local radio stations, it add some cool apps to your phone as well, depening on what you flash, it can be overclocked, or cool looking, endless really. I still do not know what I am doing... but it is fun so far, lol.
I have no cons yet, pros are above really.... 5mb camera, 1000mhz (1113 here), flash, customizing. I think it is very durable so far, I am a contractor and use it for work and play, I even dropped it today
I do not regret it and I am having fun with it, it does almost all the things I want and much more I never knew possible... even live wallpaper makes me giddy, lol.
I went from the 3g to the 3gs and I still love the nexus one..... I am new to my phone, but I hope I shed some light somewhere, you will not regret it
Wow, thanks! I'm really concerned about rooting though... Is it difficult? Do you lose any features or usability of the device? What exactly does it do?

rooting is not very difficult, but be sure you do your research first. Rooting does not loose any features, in fact the purpose of it is to allow the user full access to the phone. Basically the phone manufacturer lock down many of the things that could cause the phone to break, because of this rooting allows you to have full "admin" rights to the phone, be able to possibly break the phone but it allows you so much more. Overclocking, access to apps not usable by nonroots, and rom flashing. There are a lot of things to do when rooted, however I would advise that you hold off on rooting (im assuming your new to android) get to know the phone first, see if you like, or if your disappointed, if you are perfectly content with what the phone defaultly delivers there is no reason to root.
-Cheers and good luck
PS the nexus one was my first smartphone and so far it has done everything i could possiblely want, and i never looked back

hmm...why is that? my phone came with EPE54B and would like to get froyo once its out officially
If you get the awesome Nexus in your hand stock or rooted, you will be amazed and never look back
Well, I won't be rooting it myself, someone I know offered to do it for me who is really experienced with Android. So should I accept the offer, or decline? I'm coming from WinMo here where ROOT access I suppose it's called is their by default. You can go to the windows folder and do anything you want within their where all the system files are available to see. But, you can't delete some stuff therefore total commander give you total access to that lol.
the only possible issue is rooting voids your warranty. but many people have still gotten repairs under warranty even with root.
there is no downside to rooting. you dont lose anything, all you do is gain functions. i waited 3 months before rooting, and once i did i'm gald i did and have no regrets.

I guess you should take this to your cellular provider. Nexus is the only phone I had until now that allowed me full-time WiFi tethering on an hour long way in 100mph train, while some of the area being covered with HSDPA, and in some spots dropping all the way down to GPRS, not even EDGE. And it's capable of initiating and keeping HSDPA with 0 bars showing. I was constantly in remote control of 2 computers, email, communicator, etc.

i would advise get the phone then wait a while before rooting, see if you really need it or if you are perfectly content with what it already lets you do, if you want more control over the phone after a month or two then root it, no downside except warranty voided.
I do prefer control. I'm coming from WinMo which I changed the look dailey and hope to do that soon with Android.
you can do all of that without rooting, android is much more loose than winmo ever will be, without even rooting.
advice? get the phone, use for a week to make sure nothing is faulty, root and play
like someone said above, you do not have to root to customize/control... it just gives you more options and things to play with/try out.
I love having 2.2 but I miss the sense ui

And if you plan to use your phone for business ... forget android.

Hesitant to upgrade from g1 due to reputation

So what if any issues have you had with your stock nexus1 ? Has rooting helped or hurt?
I love my G1 but it will be time to upgrade soon. Ive just done a wipe and upgrade to cm 5.0.8 DS and like it so far.
Id love to have a rooted N1 but the horror stories with post as recent as today about wifi, trackball & screen issues make me reconsider. So far I don't know of anything else in the same ballpark that will work on Tmobile.
Thanks for any input
G1 rooted with cyanogen 5.0.8 DS
Xda app
I have not seen any issues with wifi, trackball nor screen. I been the owner of my Nexus One for over 2 months already and I can tell you, This was the best investment ever. Now, with custom ROMs you can improve the functionality of the Phone by a lot. 720p video, faster, wifi n, radio fm maybe? etc...
The N1 has very good hardware, it has things that may be officially unlocked in the near future who knows, though they are already unlocked for custom roms.
Also good to have if you plan to be the base for Android, Since Google will use the N1 as their main device, everything will be optimized for you. (That's my bet, we all saw it with Froyo Demos)
It's fine. 99% of the people wit thing are happy with it, the 1% with problems are understandably vocal. I have two N1's on my account mine (which is rooted) and my girlfriends (which isn't rooted, but has been running the Froyo test ROM for a while). Both work great.
I loved my G1. Probably the phone I loved most when I had it.
The N1 is a better phone in almost every single way ((I was able to change alot of the hardware kb/tb/covers etc on G1)) which is why i loved it.
Nexus One is a leap ahead of every phone prior to April its not even funny. Dont hesitate the N1 >> > and >> over any other phone on Tmobile right now. I love the Mytouch slide but the power ability of N1 are a much better choice.
IMO N1 still has best overall feature set in HW/SW available on the market. Even though that lead has slimmed its still the best you can get right now.
The only problem I have ever heard with the N1 is dust under the screen. But that seems few and far between.
I have had my N1 for about 2 months not and zero issues. I came from an iPhone 3gs (unlocked and jailbroken) and I'll never look back. The N1 is the best phone I have owned. Nothing comes close to it.
they arent problems, just people complaining vocally. the wifi works great, the screen works great, and i've never heard of any trackball issues. go for it you wont regret it.

My exact situation, and thoughts. I actually have my 3GS in the cabinet here at my desk because I thought I might want to switch back and forth, but I haven't touched my 3GS since the N1 showed up in the mail.
That's exact what I'd like in an N1 and get a 8" or less touchpad running android later lol
Now I need to decide on a renewal or pay full price

Ok so after checking the Google page I qualify for an upgrade and with overnight shipping ( which oddly is the same as ground shipping) for $313.38
Does T-mobile charge anything else?
My current plan is the MyFaves 1000 and I guess will be the Even more individual 500 plan. which wont be so bad now that everyone texts rather than calls, and there is wifi calling
issues
The N1 has issues with the voice cutting out frequently (at least, mine does, on Rogers/Fido). Look on the Google support forum to see lots of people complaining about this issue. Maybe T-Mobile units are unaffected?

Why? If you don't like it, return it. If you like it and you have a problem with it, HTC will fix or replace it under warranty.
Honestly, the "reports" on this or that regarding Nexus One deficiencies were broadcasted much louder than any other phone because of the hype surrounding the device. In reality, they are the same few and far between issues you'd find with any other phone on the market.
From someone who used to swap phones as frequently as once every month, I have been using the Nexus One since launch day, had problems with the first AT&T version I bought, and had HTC replace it. Not a problem since.
Where do these reputations come from? the dust issue is the only real one ive seen and htc has fixed the glue problem. its a great phone buy it.

I've never had this issue on Rogers and I've installed practically every ROM available.
Personally, I would wait for a phone that has a better touch surface. I was really looking for a multi-touch keyboard but was really disappointed to find out that the phone would never be able to do that. Other than that I love it.

1. Swype. I'll never go back.
2. The possibility is there for an app to have it.
Back to topic, I love my N1. I kept it stock for a few months, but I rooted it about a month ago and somehow, the phone is that much better. It's a staple of what I have the freedom to do now. AGPS + nav is phenomenal and comes with the phone. The camera is great. Video can now be shot at 720p (if rooted), and will soon come to Froyo. The hardware is crazy fast, Javascript 2.1 vs 2.2 vs iPad, 40+MFLOPS performance. And, since this is Google's baby, it will be the first to receive updates like Froyo.
The touch surface isn't as bad as people are making it seem, and if you're really up for gaming you can hook a wii-mote to it. Talking on the phone is fine. I occasionally have a weird call, but my friend with an iPhone drops/no-connects calls way more than me.
It has it's quirks. The antenna is located at the bottom of the phone. The reception isn't the best, and T-Mobile doesn't have the strongest signal. I work in a office building/warehouse, and getting 3G in some parts of the first floor (built on a hill, sometimes underground sometimes not) is difficult. A few N1s have had dust under the screen (fixed from what I've heard). Other than that... The phone is excellent.

pass on the n1. I own an n1 for a few months now and HATE THE 3G ISSUESthat it has. also miss the physical keyboard... your g1s keyboard is great and I'd toss this nexus for a snapdragon g1 in a heartbeat.
I'd also suggest not renewing your contract so youccan chose any phone.... any carrier.
two cents
That's Funny
Haha, reluctant to go from the G1 to nexus? I guess I kinda understand. I went from my G1 to the Nexus 6 months ago and god damn I haven't thought twice about that decision! Rooting your phone just makes things that much more fun too!

"Jumping in Head First" or "I'm Thinking About Buying a Droid"

I've been stuck in the limbo that is WM for what feels like way too long. I was comfortable with it; I knew it. But recently I started a love affair with Android on my TP2 thanks to HaRET and my unending curiosity. So I put an listing up on craigslist asking if anyone had an Android device they wanted to sell at a reasonable price. Within minutes, I had an e-mail from someone almost a hundred miles away saying he had a Droid he would sell for $200.. Seems like a good deal as most of the Droids on e-bay are still >$300. Unfortunately, he wants to do this deal the day after tomorrow, and has committed to driving most of the way to my city to do it.
So I come to this wonderful community that I have lurked in for quite a while in the hopes that you can give me the heads up. What do I need to know, and what do I need to look for?
Naturally, the first thing I am going to do is call the big V and confirm that the ESN is clean. But what about the phone itself? Is there anything I need to look out for? Any known issues? I read something about the back of the screen getting scratched from the sliding mechanism in another thread. Is that just the plastic that gets scratched up, or can the LCD itself get damaged?
I have also read a lot about this "locked bootloader." I think I understand this as not being able to install custom roms, but still allowing you to root. I was under the impression that rooting your device basically took care of that, so now I understand that I was wrong, and will further research what rooting is on my own. But I also see that some people have custom roms available here on XDA and that others are running Froyo on their Droids. Its all very confusing, and under normal circumstances, I would take a few days to read, research, and teach myself. But at the moment, I feel a little under the gun, as this deal won't last forever.
Anything you guys or gals can tell me would probably be more helpful than you think. I feel like I'm trying to make the switch from XP to Ubuntu.. (heh) Any and all posts will be read. Thanks.
The Droid doesn't have a locked bootloader and can be rooted easily. I bought one just like you're thinking of, I don't even have VZW service.
I put Froyo on it and I like it even though I haven't rooted yet.

The back of the screen has a little layer of plastic to keep from scratching some of the plastic. It tears pretty easily, but it doesnt matter as it will not actually damage the LCDs/LEDs, just scratch the plastic back up a little bit.
The Droid does not have a Locked BootLoader, only the Milestone does. Some people do know how to get around this though.
Rooting a Droid is actually quite simple. All you need (if you are a n00b, like me and you) is to download the DroidRootKit from the web which does the most complicated work for you, while allowing you to do some of the simpler stuff.
When you Root, you are brought back to Android 2.0.1 and you cannot download apps, so you might want to download ROM Manager (Premium or Regular) and back it up for downloading Eclair and Froyo ROMs later.
If you do not want to do that, then you should download a ROM (ie, UltimateDroid) place it on your SD card after Rooting, and install that through SPRecovery or ClockWorkMod Recovery.
People who are running Froyo are either rooted and downloaded a custom ROM, or forced the update through the download at the Verizon site.
The first thing you do when you meet that guy is ask if it is Rooted or ever has been.
Then you ask him if it has ever had water damage or any problems with the LCD screen.
If he says yes to the first question, good.
If he says yes to the second or third question (water damages and/or LCD problems) then DO NOT BUY IT.
(results may vary)

[Q] Is it worth getting a G1??

Hey all,
I'm wanting to get another Android phone as I got rid of my HTC Wildfire. I'm thinking about getting the G1 as its cheap and seems as though it can perform well.
I'm looking at buying one that is locked to T-Mobile and has the newest carrier updates on. My question is can it be unlocked? and does Cyanogen mod perform well?
Thanks!
It would be worth having one now, but getting one from fresh... that would depend on how cheap you can get one and if you think you need a hard-QWERTY. The G1 is quite old... and you may be more content with adding more funds for a G2.
I recently bought a G1 for cheap, and it is great currently have it running gingerbread which works really quite well, a lot more so then i thought cyanogenmon 6 did.
I also believe that they can be unlocked quite easily as well
Thanks for the info
I'm looking at a G1 also, coming from a CDMA Moment with 2.2.2 and looking to switch to GSM. The Moment has a faster processor(?) but is not a very good at some things, like being a phone. Is the G1 a good PHONE? I can get a good ROM for the things I want but does the phone part work well?
G1 okay phone, easy to mod. if you like tinkering.
G1 is an okay phone. My partner at work uses a Blackberry, he can't hear the person at the other end without an ear piece, I don't have that issue on my G1.
I do NOT love my G1, it's bulky/heavy and I don't feel the build quality is as good as some of the other phones. The Speaker is on the back of the phone, opposite from the display - seriously who does that? Samsung for example always puts the speaker above the main screen.
The Keyboard has very small keys but it IS a 5 row keyboard, you can get good with some practice, but some of the newer phones, ex: T-Mobile Sidekick 4G has a keyboard/CPU/display that I almost can't believe how good it is, however they have the dumbest overlay I've ever seen, haha, can't have it all I guess.
The G1 is reliable, it's just not very pretty, if it's cheap, it's a deal.
Hi,
I am contemplating putting my G1 up for sale.
It is the one in my Signature.
Lemme know.
Heeter
If you don't play big games, g1 is enough, however, you cannot buy a new one now.
If I were you, I will buy another new phone.
I suggest a HTC Wildfire at least :/ g1 is maybe just too slow even for normal use if your gonna even get apps :'(
Honestly, no. Get a higher end device and you will be much happier.. I just got a HD2 and it is a huge improvement over the G1, and very worth investing in.
The G1 can't run many of the apps on market because it is too slow, including live wallpapers, angry birds rio, etc..
It depends on how much you can get if for. I got mine for US$50 used a few weeks a go. It's really slow and low on capacity but it's a great entry phone to Android for me. Learned a lot with it. It works great as a phone. And the best part is, if I brick it, I will not feel bad. Just pull the SIM and move to the next cheap phone I can find.
Just saw someone selling one for $30 on craigslist. I would definitely get that one if I haven't got this one.
I completely agree with the above statement ^^
I would love to get an G1 for a nice 2nd/back up phone since my bb 8900 curve have self rebooting problems

So what phones are everyone going to be coming from? I'm happy to say I won't be using my Nexus S 4G anymore. The thing was great for the time, but it's definitely showing its age now. Actually being able to take advantage of Network Vision now is gonna be great as well.
will be coming over from the evo lte.
EVO 3D. It is a solid phone but ready for something new.
Biggest worry with this phone is going to be the camera and how hard will it be to get working on ASOP or CM ROMS. This was the biggest frustration with the 3D. Finally they got the camera working but without 3D which I am fine with.

The camera on the 3D was difficult to get working because of the drivers needed because there were two cameras. If there is only one I think it would have been more straightforward as Sensation never had quite that difficulty.
Hopefully this means devs will not have as much problem with getting the camera to work on Non-Sense based ROMs.
I'll be coming from my good ole GNex. I always try to buy a new phone every year around my birthday. GNex was last year, Evo3D before that, and OG Evo before that.
Coming from EVO 3D. My battery barely lasts 1/2 a day without actually using it. It will literally be at 20% from fully charged within approximately 4-5 hours without using the phone. At all. For anything. It wasn't as bad when it was new, but it was never good to begin with. It also heats up quite a bit which was really nice when it was cold. Now that Spring has arrived, I really don't want hot pants. I know the HTC One's battery ain't great, but it's gotta be better than the EVO 3D. I know I could just get a new battery or look for which one of my 200 apps I've installed causing the drain, but then I saw the HTC One...
Anyone else keep checking their pre-order progress? I click on my Newegg Wireless (Simplicity LLC) confirmation email for my Black 32GB like 4 times a day to check on the status.

Yeah, this is what I am hoping for. When the One first was announced, I was reluctant to go that way because the camera seemed like it might be a hindrance again.
I have heard people say that HTC is going to try and release code quicker which should help as well.
to recoup some cost of buying fullprice >.> i sold my e4gt on glyde for about 170. I'm thinking i underpriced it cuz it sold in a matter of hours
If I can somehow talk myself into buying off contract and pay the full price I'll be coming from the EVO 4G LTE. Still mulling over it; $549 is a lot of dinero.

I had a G-NEX for a few months before switching over to my Fiancee's account on Sprint (Figured I would cut down on monthly costs) and at the time the only monetarily valuable phone was the iPhone 5... I've been patiently waiting for something to come out and so I finally sold that and Pre-Ordered yesterday.
Right now I am using my fiancee's EVO Design 4g and I am going crazy with how slow it is. I just installed Evolvr Rom with an older kernel and overclocked it to 2ghz... hopefully that will hold me over until this comes out next week, but my fingers are still crossed for early delivery.
Coming from the EVO 4G LTE :good:
Will be switching from my trusty Samsung Epic 4G! I'm so excited to finally get rid of that darned physical keyboard...
Kinda lusting after either the One or the Galaxy S4. I hear multiple gasps and the sound of torches being lit, let me explain....
My biggest concern isn't so much battery life, screen resolution, storage, etc., but more: when I get to rooting and installing ROMs, whenever something's gone wrong with my trusty ol' OG EVO, there's few things that a battery pull and boot into recovery/reflash/restore couldn't fix. If the One locks up, no removable battery.
Having said that, I'm sure there's a good many people with Nexuses (Nexes? Nexii?) and other non-removable batteries out there who're flashing ROMs and have a way to get out of a bootloop or freeze. All else being equal, I think I'll shoot for the One once it's time to upgrade. HTC's done well for me with my first Android/smartphone, and it sounds like it'll be a great phone.

You don't have to worry about pulling the battery if you no boot or bootloop. There is a hardware key combination that phones with non-removable batteries use to force reset. This is hardwired in not software.

No big deal with the non removable battery. Iirc power and volume up and down simulate a battery pull at least on the Evo lte.

I had the same worry. Similar experiences with the SD Card. Forget to dealt the right file in the bootloader menu it was very easy just to pull the sd card and delete the file.
But I also think this is where the industry is going and I like the look of the phone too much to go to Samsung. Just can't enjoy TouchWiz. While i tend to have CM or ASOP running, I do enjoy Sense as well. Nice to have options. So I figure it is time to learn a new way of doing things.
So, I checked with Best Buy and, while they won't match the pre-order price at Sprint (full device price, not upgrade price), they will match at release date. With that being said, think Sprint will retain the existing price at least 1 or 2 days after it's released? I'd hate to spend the inflated BB price to lock in the pre-order only to be unable to get that $150 refund.
Query
Getting One tomorrow (can't wait) and i will, of course be rooting it and flashing a customer rom. However I can only find topics the AT &T and Sprint version in the main forum index page. I live in the UK, and please forgive if this is stupid question, but is there a developed for the UK version?
